Chapter 7: The Feelings That Come After
The clock on Spencer's bedside table read 5:52 a.m. Spencer laid on her back in bed staring wide eyed at the ceiling. She could not believe what she had done that night. Never in her life had she ever felt so incredible. Everything Toby did to her felt like an out of the body experience she never imagined. He had made her insides burn and when it was over, she had never felt so relieved, stressed free, and satisfied. She also could not believe that she had the nerve to get down on her knees and go down on him. She never pictured herself to be one of those girls who did a thing like that. If she was being honest with herself, she liked it. Not just liked. She loved it. Toby seemed happy with everything she had done so; she hoped that she was able to give him the same amount of pleasure.
But underneath all those amazing feelings, she felt guilty. When she was finally able to come down from her high her mind went back to Wren. What would happen if he were to find out about this? Would it hurt him to know Spencer had hooked up with another guy just hours after their fight? Spencer spent most of the night wide awake thinking about the guilt. She also couldn't stop thinking about Toby and how, so incredibly, wonderful he made her feel. A small part of her mind wondered about the possibility of that ever happening again.
At 6 o'clock, Spencer threw the covers off her body and got out of bed. She opened her door and stared down the hall at the closed guest room door. Just the thought of Toby being down the hall made her feel all tingly inside. Spencer crossed her legs and cursed at herself.
"Don't you start!"
She shook it off and went to take a cold shower. Light was just beginning to break outside when she got out of the shower. She put on a T-shirt and a gray pair of pants. When she opened her bedroom door again, the smell of coffee caught her nose. The door to the guest room was now open. Toby was awake, and he was downstairs. Spencer had no idea how to face him. How do you approach a guy that had his mouth… down there just last night? Spencer took a deep, courageous breath then walked downstairs to the kitchen. To her surprise, the room was empty. She looked around but there was no sight or sound of Toby anywhere. Spencer walked to the window to look out into the driveway and Toby's truck was gone. Did he leave to avoid seeing her in the morning? Was he too frantic about what happened between them last night? Maybe he didn't know how to approach her either. Spencer walked back to the kitchen to find a note on the counter.
Thank you for letting me stay last night after drinking a little too much wine. I'm sorry I left before you woke up, but I got a call from my father and needed to leave. I made you some coffee as thanks for being so kind. I'll see you when I come back for work. -Toby
Spencer had no clue if this note was genuine or if Toby had written it out as a subtle way to dip out on her without making things awkward between them. Truthfully, she was relieved. She was not yet ready to face Toby.
Spencer tossed her empty breakfast plate into the dish washer. She then poured the rest of the coffee from the pot into her mug. She started to head upstairs when a knock came from the kitchen door. Spencer set down her mug to answer it. To her horror, it was Wren. Wren stood out there holding a big bouquet of flowers.
"Wren!" Spencer choked on her own surprise. "What are you doing here?"
Wren gave her a sheepish smile. "May I come in?"
"I suppose." She moved to let him through. Spencer did her best to give him the cold shoulder. Even though she felt guilty, she still felt anger from their fight last night. Wren set the vase of flowers on the counter then turned to her.
"I'm sorry about last night," said Wren. "I behaved poorly last night."
"Yes, you did." Spencer crossed her arms.
"Do you think there's any way you can forgive me and be my fiancé again?"
"I don't know."
Wren dug the ring out of his pocket and held it up for her.
"I spent two hours last night staring at this ring. I remember the day I bought it for you. From the second I saw this ring I knew it would be perfect for you. This ring was made for you, Spencer."
"You didn't pawn it for gamble money."
"No, of course not. I could never do a thing like that."
"I'm not sure this is enough to convince me to forgive you. You really hurt me last night."
"I know. I was a jerk," he said. "I really am sorry. I don't know what's wrong with me. Work has just been stressful. Please, can you give me another chance?"
Spencer sighed, ready to confess, "Wren, there's something you deserve to know. Last night I…"
"No, I understand," he said. "You were stressed out too. We had a fight, darling, but that doesn't mean we should throw our future away over something so silly. I still love you and I want to marry you."
"You do?"
"Yes," Wren took her hands. "Please, put your ring back on. Be mine again."
Spencer was at a loss for words. Her mind kept swimming with thoughts from last night. Spencer was smiling, but she had no idea what her own smile even meant. Wren took Spencer's smile as a yes and slid the ring back on her ring finger. He smiled and gave her left hand a squeeze.
"Thank you, love. Things will get better. I promise."
Spencer stood there still smiling, but this time her smile was to hide the strong guilt she felt inside.
The morning after can be so awkward. Wren is back in the picture again. What will this mean for Toby? Was their hot affair a one-time thing?
Please leave a review before you leave. Thank you. (: -Mellie
