Author's Note:Just a heads-up, this is a very sad and emotional chapter.

Ava's POV

I walked into my boyfriend's living room after leaving Riley's old bedroom. Topy and Cory let me stay over this week because my mom had to go out of town. Auggie walked out right after me.

"Good morning, Babe," he greeted me.

"Morning," I replied. I looked around. "Where's your mom?"

"I don't know, she's usually up before now," he answered.

Topanga and Cory walked into the living room. He was in his usual clothes, but she was still in her PJs.

"Don't you work today, mom?" Auggie asked her.

She didn't answer.

"She's working from home," his dad told us. He looked at her. "Are you sure you don't want me to stay with you today?"

"No, go to work," she responded. She looked at me. She looked like she was going to say something to me, but stopped. "Have a good day at school."

Topy went back to her room.

There was a knock on their door.

"Come in!" Auggie shouted.

Andy and Baily walked in. I smiled at my girl best friend. Suddenly, I got an empty pit in my stomach.

"You guys ready?" Andy asked.

"I…forgot something," I said.

I hurried out of the room.

Auggie's POV

"Is Ava okay, Gus?" Andy asked me.

I got a feeling in my gut. I looked at my phone screen. The feeling was right.

"I'll be right back," I said.

I went to Riley's old room. Ava was sitting in the Bay Window, crying. She looked at me.

"I don't know why, but when I saw Baily, I just suddenly felt empty," she said.

I sat next to her.

"I know why," I told her. She looked at me. "It's the 1st."

Realization hit her face.

"I didn't even notice," she admitted.

"We'll go to school in a little bit with dad," I told her. "I'll tell them to go ahead."

I left the room and told them.

No One's POV

February 1st, 2000

Topanga walked into class.

"Hey. Girl," Angela greeted her best friend.

"Hey, Angela," she greeted back.

"I'm sorry for the other day," Angela apologized. "I shouldn't have just believed a rumor."

"It's fine, Angela," she assured her. "It was really sweet that you would even throw something like that for me. I just got my period last night, though, so definitely not pregnant."

"Well, as long as you're happy, I am," Angela said.

"Thanks, Angela," she said with a smile.

They both sat down in their respective seats.

Auggie's POV

We were in my dad's class.

"What is pain?"

I raised my hand.

"It's something that hurts," I said. "I don't really know how to describe it."

Ava raised her hand.

"Yes, Ms. Morganstern?" He called on her.

"Future Matthews," someone joked.

"It's something that causes you to feel uncomfortable," Ava answered. "It's any degree of suffering."

"That's correct," he said. "Can anyone name an example of pain?"

"My joints hurting," I offered.

"Grief," Ava answered.

"Good example, Auggie," dad told me. He looked at Ava. "And Ava, you are correct, but it's more than that. Can anyone elaborate?"

"Grief is pain that's driven by love," Baily said. "It's pain that happens when you lose someone that you love deeply."

"Great answer, Ms. Stevens," dad told her. "Grief is possibly one of the most meaningful forms of pain that you can feel."

"History is filled with pain," Mitchel, another classmate, said. "Sickness, death, and a lot of other stuff."

"Completely true, Mr. Blake," dad agreed.

Ava's POV

After class, Baily met me at our lockers.

"Hey, what was up this morning?" She asked me.

"Can we talk about it in PE?" I responded.

"Sure," she agreed.

No One's POV

Topanga sat on the couch, crying.

"Why am I hurting so bad?" She questioned.

She heard a knock on her door.

"Topanga?" She heard Angela call to her.

"Thank God you got my page," Topanga said. Angela walked into the room. "I couldn't get ahold of Cory."

"What's wrong?"

"I'm cramping really bad," she said, "and I'm bleeding really heavy."

"Do you need to go to the hospital?"

"I think so," Topanga answered. "It wasn't this bad earlier…or ever."

Angela helped Topanga get up and they left the apartment.

Ava's POV

Baily and I walked out of gym class.

"Thanks for telling me, Ava," she said. "I'm sorry—"

"It's not your fault," I assured her. "Auggie's mom seemed down today. I wonder if she remembered too."

Auggie walked up to us.

"Hey, Gus," Baily greeted him. He greeted her. "I better meet Andrew. I'll see you later."

"See you," he replied.

Baily left the school.

"I saw you talking to someone on the phone in PE," I commented. "Who was it?"

"Riley," he answered. "She called to see how you were doing today. I told her that you're coping." I nodded. "I also told her about how mom stayed home today and was even in her pajamas. Riley said she knows why and to go to Philadelphia to tell us."

"What about your parents?"

"She said they know," he said.

At that, we left the school.

No One's POV

Shawn and Cory were walking to the pool table when Jack approached them.

"Cory," he said in a low voice.

"What?" Cory questioned in a similarly low voice.

"Angela's been trying to get ahold of both of you," he said. "She didn't tell me what it was about, just that Topanga's in the hospital. She told me to tell you if I saw you, but not to tell anyone else…especially Eric."

"Let's go, I'll drive," Shawn said.

They hurried out of Pennbrook.

Auggie's POV

We got to Riley's house and she said to get in her car and that we were going somewhere. We did so and went to the cemetery.

"What are we doing here?" Ava asked.

"You'll see," she answered.

We got out of the car.

We followed her through the cemetery until we got to the Matthews. I saw an unfamiliar name on a small headstone.

"Who's Elliot?" I questioned.

No One's POV

Cory and Shawn walked into the hospital.

"Cor, I'm sure she's fine," Shawn tried to reassure his best friend.

They saw Angela sitting in the waiting room.

Cory rushed to her.

"Where's Topanga?" He questioned her. She just looked at him.

"She's not dead, is she?" Shawn questioned.

"No, Shawn," she said. "She's not."

"Why did you say it that way?" Cory said with a worried and cautioned tone.

"You need to sit down," she told him. He did so, and she sat next to him. Shawn sat down as well. She grabbed his hand and placed her other on top of his in a comforting manner. "She had a miscarriage…"

"But that doesn't make sense, Angela," he told her, standing up. "She wouldn't have lied to me."

"She didn't think she was," Angela replied. "She was bleeding a lot and was in a lot of pain. She couldn't get ahold of you, but I got her message."

"We lost our pagers," Shawn admitted.

He sat back, in his seat, in a regretful and sad manner.

"Where is she?" Cory questioned.

"In her room," she said. "You can have someone take you there."

Cory went to her room with a doctor. He saw his wife in tears. He saw she was holding something in her hands. He walked over to her. He saw an extremely small human in her hands.

"Is that…?" He started to question but lost his words.

"It's our baby," she confirmed. He stared at the small body in her hands, tears finally welling up in his eyes. "They said we can keep him. I want to, but…"

He nodded.

"Do you think we should bury him?"

She nodded.

"Do you want to hold him?"

He let her transfer their son into his hands.

"Should we name him?" He questioned.

"Yeah," she replied.

Auggie's POV

"He's our brother, Auggie," Riley answered me. "Mom had a miscarriage in college. She was around 13 weeks when she had it. She still got her period, which is rare, so she had no idea she was pregnant. She said that I'm a—"

"Rainbow baby," Ava finished for her. " Like Brooklyn."

"Yeah, exactly," she said . "She said that might be why I've always been obsessed with rainbows."

She let out a small laugh.

"Honestly, that would make sense," We heard Aunt Maya say.

We turned around and saw her, Uncle Josh, and Christian walking towards us.

"So, I see you met Elliot," Josh said. "He would have been 23 right now. If he was born on time, he would have been 24 in August."

"A little over nine months younger than KC," Aunt Maya said, "and almost a year and six months younger than Josh."

"Why did Topanga never tell me about it?" Ava asked.

"Because she thought it might hurt you more," Maya said. "You were only 12 when you lost Angel."

"How did you find out about it?" I inquired.

"I told her with your mom's permission," Uncle Josh answered.

"Did they actually bury him?" Ava asked.

"Yeah," Uncle Josh replied.

"Why didn't they tell me I could?"

"They probably asked your mom since you were a minor," Riley told her. "As traumatized as you were by all that you went through, she probably thought it might do more damage."

"I guess that makes sense," she agreed. "It could have."

"You and my mom are a lot more healed now, but it'll still hit you sometimes," Riley said. "Like it does with KC."

"And you, with Eli," I added. She nodded.

"Do you think she'd be open to talk to me about it now?" Ava asked.

"That's why she let me show you his grave," Riley replied, "but only if you're ready."

"I am," Ava replied. "Is it okay if we stay here alone for a bit?"

"Yeah, sure," Maya said. "We'll be over at Grandpa Chet's grave."

We sat there, saying very few words out loud. After we got home, Ava and my mom went to the Bay Window to talk.
