Chapter 12: Toby's Repayment
Toby was tasked with building ten tables for the fashion show and ten tables is what he delivered. The fashion show was a major success. Aria, Hanna, Emily, Alison, and a couple of extra girls showed up to be models with Spencer. They had a decent turn out with the crowd. Hanna and Aria were put in charge of music selection. Emily and Alison oversaw signing everyone in who made donations. Spencer was responsible for bringing everything involved with the show together. She was there to give directions to people and to greet guests as they arrived. She made sure all the models had enough hair spray and makeup. And she was there to observe Toby setting up the tables.
"Thank you everyone for coming out tonight." Spencer stood up on the stage after the show. "Thanks to you all we raised $5,600 for the Children's Hospital and cancer research."
Toby stood in the audience clapping with the crowd. He had fun tonight. He got to see Spencer strut down the runway and model a lot of hot outfits. Toby will take any opportunity he can get to see her. Even though Spencer gave him the option to get in for free, he still donated to the fundraiser. Spencer wrapped up the show then went backstage with her friends to change out of her model clothes.
"This was such a fun night!" Hanna exclaimed.
Each of the girls were seated at one of the makeup tables. Spencer entered the room and sat at the table next to Aria. She reached for her makeup bag to find her makeup remover.
"I saw Toby here tonight," Aria said in a teasing tone.
"Yeah," Spencer smiled. "I invited him. He's the one who built me these makeup tables."
"She's blushing again, you guys," Hanna laughed.
Spencer rolled her eyes, smiling. "I'm just happy with the way things turned out tonight."
"I think we should get some take out from The Grill and celebrate," said Emily.
"That sounds fun!" said Hanna.
"That's a great idea," said Alison.
"Sorry, I can't," said Spencer. "I have other plans."
"Doing what?" Aria asked. "I thought Wren was out of town until next week."
Spencer zipped up her make up bag. "It's something else. I'll see you guys some other time."
Spencer winked at her friends then got up from her table.
Toby waited out in the lobby of the hotel where the fashion show had taken place. Spencer had promised to meet him here after the show. He remembered that Spencer made a particularly important deal with him. He builds the tables for the show and in return, Spencer would go home with him to do whatever he wants. Toby could hardly breathe when Spencer was solidifying their deal. He spent a lot of time thinking about what he wanted to do with her. Now, he can't wait to get her home to his place.
"Hey!" Spencer was beaming as she approached.
Toby's eyes lit up at the sight of her. She had changed into a simple short black dress and heels. How was it possible for her to look so beautiful in such a simple outfit? Spencer's hair was a little damp after rinsing all the hair spray out. When she was close enough, she grabbed Toby's hand and kissed him on the cheek. Her kiss left him feeling tingly and warm inside.
"You look amazing," he said.
"Thank you," she grinned. "Are you ready?"
He nodded, "I'm ready."
"Okay." She lowered her voice as her eyes looked at him seductively. "Take me home, mister."
"Gladly."
Spencer felt the excitement bubbling up inside of her the whole car ride to Toby's. She could not believe how bold she had been that one afternoon. Here she is riding with Toby in his car back to his place. She's about to let him do anything he wants with her. Whether or not what he does is dirty is entirely up to him. Spencer anticipated lots of hot sex.
But when they pulled up in front of Toby's loft outside the Brew, she suddenly felt hesitant. She's still willing to do whatever he wants like promised, but she's beginning to wonder if this is right. Should she really have sex with Toby just because she's mad at Wren? She feels less sorry about Wren and sorrier at how Toby might feel in all of this. Would he feel used?
"It's not much," Toby said as he led the way up the stairs to his loft. "But it gets me away from my family."
Toby opened the door and flipped on the lights. His loft was small. Just a family room with a couch, a tv, and a kitchen just a few steps away. There are a couple of steps that lead to his bedroom and then a door to his bathroom. Toby was right. His place was tiny, but it felt like home. Spencer smiled.
"I like it," she said.
Toby shut the door behind them. The two just stood there for a moment taking in their surroundings. Here they were. Alone in Toby's apartment. Spencer shivered. She caught a whiff of a familiar scent coming from his kitchen, but she couldn't put her finger on it. What happens next? Are they going to sit and talk first or was Toby ready to get right down to business?
"I had fun tonight," Toby said.
She turned to see him smiling. "Good, I'm glad. I was really happy to see your face in the crowd tonight. You did a fantastic job on building the tables."
"Did you mean what you said in the barn that day?" he asked. "You really will do anything I want."
"Anything." Spencer's voice was seductive, but it was different this time. It sounded forced.
"Good," Toby smiled. "Stay right here. I'll be right back."
Toby left the room to go back to his bedroom. Spencer had no clue what he was going to get. She suddenly felt nervous. While he was gone, Spencer tried to calm herself by looking at some of Toby's pictures on his wall. There were a lot of him as a young boy and a few of a beautiful woman. Spencer guessed that it was his mother. She has his eyes, or more like, Toby has her eyes. Spencer's lips turned into a smile when her eyes landed on a picture of Toby and his mother at one of his t-ball games. Spencer's guessing, he was ten years old at the time. Spencer felt guiltier. She can't do this to Toby. He's too innocent.
"Here," Toby's voice echoed as he returned to the room. "Put this on."
He handed her a large blueish gray long sleeved t-shirt. Spencer recalled their first sexual encounter. Toby told her that she would look good in one of his shirts. Spencer slowly took it from his hands. He nodded towards the bathroom.
"Go change and then meet me out here."
Spencer gulped, trying her best to keep up the seduction act. "Yes, sir."
Spencer walked into Toby's bathroom then shut the door behind her. She exhaled deeply as she stared at herself in the mirror. After another deep breath, Spencer unzipped her black dress letting it flow to the floor near her ankles. She kicked the dress to the side then pulled Toby's blue shirt over her body. Surprisingly, the shirt fit longer on her body than she expected it to be. She stared at the reflection of herself wearing Toby's shirt. She had to admit, she looked good in it, and she felt comfortable in it. The material of the shirt was soft cotton. Wearing it made her feel good.
Spencer exited the bathroom and returned to the living room ready to deliver on her promise. When she got back, the lights were dimmed, and a soft yellowish glow was coming from Toby's coffee table. The couch had been pushed back and there was now a red flannel blanket over some cushions on the floor. That's not all that surprised Spencer. A scrabble board was sitting in the middle of the floor. Toby walked from the kitchen carrying something with a hot pad. That's when the smell Spencer smelt earlier finally clicked. He was holding a pie. Toby had a pie baking in the oven. Spencer's lips turned up into a warm smile.
"Did you bake a pie?"
Toby smiled back, "yes. It's apple."
Spencer laughed, "you bake?"
"A little." He shrugged and set the pie down on the coffee table. "It's my mom's recipe."
Toby looked at Spencer now dressed in his shirt. His eyes gleamed like stars. Spencer stared at everything Toby had set up. The cozy blankets, the baked pie, the scrabble board, and the steaming mugs of coffee. Was this the evening Toby had planned? Spencer wanted to laugh in relief and curiosity. This was all so sweet.
"Toby," Spencer started. "What is going on?"
"What?" He looked at her so innocently. "Our deal was I would have you over and I could do whatever I wanted with you. I remember from our first night having dinner together that you love the game Scrabble. Well, tonight, my dear." Toby handed her one of the coffee mugs from the table. It warmed her hands. "I want to kick your ass at a hardcore game of scrabble."
Spencer giggled, "is that all?"
He shrugged, and jokingly said, "well, I might share this pie with you." Toby sat down on the blanket. He smiled at her. "Are you in or not?"
Spencer giggled some more and said, "I'm in, but don't go thinking you're going to win. I never lose."
Spencer kneeled on the floor to join Toby on the cushioned blankets.
As the night came later, the candles on the coffee table melted lower, the coffee mugs were empty, and half a pie remained. Spencer smiled fondly of herself as she laid down another long word. Toby read over the word and chuckled.
"Glyceraldehyde."
"The C on the double letter gets me thirty-two points," Spencer added. "Plus, the triple word score gets me ninety-six points."
Spencer pumped her fist in the air as a small celebration as she wrote down her score. Her celebration was cut short but Toby's next choice of a word.
"Goofball," he read aloud. "You can put down one-hundred and four points for me."
Spencer leaned up on her elbow. Her eyes darted over the board trying to prove his math wrong.
"What?"
Toby helped her out. "Here's eighteen points, times the triple word score, plus the fifty-point bingo bonus." He looked at her slightly smug.
Spencer choked on her pride. "Wow, a hundred and four points. Good for you."
"I like this game."
Toby smirked as he looked at her with his eyes, challenging her. Spencer was dismayed. Nobody ever beat her in this game. No one ever beat her at any game.
"Do you want another cup of coffee?" Toby asked.
Spencer looked at the clock above his television: 11:48 p.m. it read.
"No, I probably shouldn't."
"Okay."
Toby collected their empty coffee mugs then stood up. He started towards the kitchen. Spencer picked up the half empty pie plate and followed him. After washing the mugs and putting the rest of the pie in the fridge, the pair headed back over to the blanket.
"This has been really nice," Spencer said. They leaned against the couch.
"Yeah," Toby agreed.
"I got to admit. This was not at all what I was expecting when I came over tonight."
"Really?" Toby smirked at her and gave her the side eye. "Did you think I was going to have you over so I could have sex with you in every room in this apartment?"
Spencer shyly smiled and shrugged, "I mean, kind of."
"Were you disappointed?"
She shook her head. "No. But, if I'm being honest, I need to confess something."
"Okay." Toby adjusted his legs.
"That afternoon when I invited you into the barn. I really did plan to hire you to build the makeup tables. That part was true, but the last part I jumped the gun. The next part of my plan was to have sex with you and now that I think about, it was just to get back at Wren." Spencer sighed. "I realized about halfway over here that I couldn't do that. I don't want to use you like that."
Toby nodded along. He gave her a slight smile, "I figured something was up with you and Wren that day. I could see it in your eyes."
"I'm sorry," she said, sincerely.
"It's okay." He placed his hand on top of hers softly.
"You're a good guy, Toby. I never want to hurt you. I'm glad I realized all of this before I dragged you into something so deep."
"I understand," he said honestly. "You're a good person. I know you never intended on making me feel used."
"I didn't." Spence squinted at him. "Hey, if you knew my intentions all along, how come you didn't go for it? I mean, any man in your position would jump for a chance to have free sex with a woman."
Toby smiled at her ever so softly and said, "because even though in that moment you thought that this was what you wanted, I knew it wasn't. You didn't really want to do this. That wouldn't be what you needed either. What you needed was an escape from feeling hurt by whatever it was that Wren did to upset you."
Spencer looked at him. He continued, "you're not hard to read, Spencer. Sex can do a lot of things, but it won't fix what's really going on inside."
Spencer's eyes began to water. She could no longer keep her tears at bay as tears began to leak from her eyelids and down her cheeks. She sniffled trying her best to not let anymore tears fall. It was hopeless. More tears flowed down her face.
"I just really hate feeling this way all the time," Spencer sobbed. "If it weren't for my parents, I probably wouldn't even still be with him. It's just… sometimes… Wren is great one minute and then the next he's just gone. I don't feel like he's as in this as he thinks he is."
Toby used his thumb to wipe her tears away. "Keep going," he urged.
"He went to stupid London with his friends." Spencer exhaled loudly, trying to contain herself. "I guess he's allowed to do fun stuff with his friends, but what does it mean when a guy would rather spend every free minute he has with his friends over his fiancé?"
Toby shook his head, "it means that he's a jerk." Toby handed her a tissue from the coffee table.
"You're just saying that." Spencer blew her nose then sniffled. "He's allowed to have fun with his friends. It's good for him."
"Of course, he is," Toby said. "But, not like this. There's a difference between having quality time with your friends during occasional guys night out and pushing your "loved one" aside all the time so you can do those things." He wiped another stray tear from her cheek. "You deserve better than that."
Spencer sniffled a couple more times. Her flow of tears seemed to slow down. She looked at Toby. She put her hand on Toby's face and rubbed her soft fingertips over his cheek.
"I just want to be in love," she said.
Toby put his hand over her hand that was on his face. He laced their fingers together and brought their hands down to the side. He gazed into her eyes.
"I think you will be. I think you will find someone who will be in love you with you too."
Spencer swallowed, "is it okay if I stay here tonight? We'll just sleep. I promise."
"I know we'll just sleep," Toby teased. "Because you're still holding up your end of the deal to do whatever I want."
Spencer sniffled as the remainder of her tears started to mix in with her smile. Toby used his free hand to wipe them away till there were no more tears on her face.
"There's that beautiful smile."
Spencer's smile grew wider, and Toby returned it with his warm one.
I hope this chapter made you melt in a completely new way. Did you enjoy Toby's evening with Spencer? Let me know what you think of this chapter. I'll try to be back soon with a new chapter.
