Garret
Garret watched her from his place in the back of Swan Saloon, she was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. He had come to this town to lay low with his gang, The Nomads, two and a half years ago. He'd stay here longer than he'd stayed anywhere, and he'd stayed for her. Kate… She was a saloon girl who wouldn't give him the time of day, though he'd tried.
He was certain his problem with her was he always ended up in jail before the night was over. It never failed, but what could he say he like trouble. Found it whenever he could. He was an outlaw after all.
But he'd learned a little about her since arriving. She had come to this town over five years ago though the reason was unknown. And though the town loved gossip they didn't go digging for information that wasn't offered. His eyes followed her as she took orders and brought drinks and got hit on by men. He hated them and was comforted by the fact that she seemed to hate them as well.
He felt eyes on him and turned to find Emmett glaring at him. They had never really gotten along, but a few nights ago Rosalie, Emmett's wife, had spilled a tray of drinks on his lap. He had stood up and yelled at her and Emmett had stepped in turning it into a brawl. And of course, Garret had been the one arrested due to the fact Jasper, the new sheriff, was friends with Emmett.
He sighed turning back to Kate. He knew he needed to leave town before they discovered who he really was. Only he couldn't leave Kate. Also, he was certain that if he left, he'd be leaving alone. James and Victoria liked living here where they had the town fooled as they robbed them blind, he was sure that endeavor would end badly. Laurent had left down months ago though Garret wasn't sure why he knew only that it had something to do with Irina.
He stood deciding to turn in for the night, as he headed for the room he usually used someone bumped into him. He turned swinging his fisted without looking who it was.
"What the…" the man yelled as Garret's fist slammed into his face.
It turned out whoever it was packed a strong punch as Garret found himself on his back. The man followed him to the floor punching until Garret lost consciousness Jasper was called and Garret was taken to jail along with the other man.
Kate
Kate watched as Jasper and Edward carried Garret out of the saloon while Emmett drug Sam (a native American from the Res). She knew he was on his way to jail again; he was easy to anger. His temper was the reason she keeps turning him down. He reminded her of her husband, whom she was running from.
Stefan was a southern gentleman who made his money due to the war. He had supplied weapons to the south to help aid in defeating the north. Of course, it had failed considering the North won, but Stefan had easily swapped sides toward the end and managed to keep his newly earned wealth. He had also gained some powerful friends in the north and south.
Kate had been young and beautiful. Her beauty had always been her curse, her family hadn't been wealthy, and the war had only made things worse. With the death of her father, she and her mother lost everything and were homeless. It was hard to survive, then things got worse still as her mother fell ill and died soon after.
Stefan gave her a home, food, and everything she could ever want. He made her his wife and she had been grateful to him. Then everything changed after they'd said their vows, Stefan turned violent, but more than that he started sharing her with his brother Vladimir. She could still hear their laughs as she cried and begged for them to stop.
A year later Vladimir had taken a wife of fourteen years, Bree, whose situations were similar to Kate's. She couldn't bear for what had happened to her to happen to the child, so she convinced the girl to run away with her. Six months on the run when Stefan and Vladimir had caught them torturing them both before returning them to the mansion.
Bree became pregnant soon after but her age and the constant abuse caused early labor and both mother and child died. Kate mourned her after the funeral she ran away again only this time she managed to get away and escape to the town of Forks. She liked it here, everything would be perfect if Garret would just leave her alone. She had enough of men, even one as good-looking as Garret.
Rosalie was clearing a table, she looked up and smiled at Kate. "do you need assistance?" Rosalie asked pointing to the full table in front of Kate.
"No, I'm fine." She answered and began clearing her own table.
The night went on like usual, Emmett was working the bar with the new bartender Jacob. Isabella had extended the open hours so instead of winding down the patrons carried on drinking and gambling. Her fellow saloon girls were doing their work. Edward had returned from the jail and was sitting at the bar talking to Emmett. Kate sighed it was the same old thing and she enjoyed the normalcy of it.
All was well until Stefan walked in she turned to run but she was already caught in his sights. He charged her grabbing her and dragging her toward the door. Emmett and Edward were there waiting before he could escape with her and she sighed in relief, at least they wouldn't let him take her without a fight.
"Get out of my way! This here is my wife; I've got a right to take her." Stefan said.
"She doesn't look like she agrees," Emmett answered.
"Let her go and we'll let you walk out of here," Edward said.
"I don't care what she wants. This whore cost me, my brother!" Stefan replied his face was turning red with anger. Vladimir was dead!
"I don't see how considering she's lived in this town for years and I've never seen the likes of you or your brother!" this time it was Jasper that spoke his gun pointed at Stefan.
Kate was shocked to see Garret was behind him with a gun aimed at Stefan as well.
"This whore is the reason Vlad's wife died when he lost her, he took his own life! It was her fault." Stefan yelled shaking her.
At this, Kate spoke up, "I didn't kill Bree! He did!"
"Shut up!" he yelled shaking her harder and her teeth chattered. "If you hadn't convinced her to leave him, he wouldn't have beaten her so bad. He had to keep her in line after you taught her to disobey."
"Enough!" Garret yelled. "Let her go and leave town and you'll get live. Resist and die."
Kate threw herself away from Stefan wrenching her arm free just as a gun fired. Though she hadn't seen Stefan draw a weapon that didn't mean he hadn't, she wasn't sure who was shot. His grip on her loosened and she fell to the floor hard her head smacked the floor with a thud, her hip had twisted and her arm was bruised from his grip on her, In other words, she'd hurt in the morning. Someone was shaking her frantically calling her name, and she opened her eyes.
Isabella was kneeling over her, "Kate? Are you alright?"
"I think so," she answered sitting up.
She looked around the room. The four men who'd stood at the door were gathered in a circle and she couldn't tell what they were doing. Stefan was holding his arm as blood poured from the wound while Carlisle Cullen bandaged it. Several of the Quileute men were holding him in place. She turned back to the four seeing Edward and Jasper were walking toward Stefan cuffs out and ready. Garret was grinding his teeth as Emmett held pressure on a wound and it occurred to her he had been shot.
She jumped up, her body protesting, and Isabella guided her up. She ran to Jasper and Garret, or she tried to anyway. Isabella helped her make it over to Garret, she reached him just as Carlisle came over to assess the situation.
"What happened?" Kate asked.
"The bastard pulled a gun, he and Jasper fired at the same time. Jasper got 'em in the arm that was holding you, but he got me." Garret explained.
She bent down throwing her arms around him, "Thank you to trying to save me."
"It took taking a bullet for you to notice me? Why didn't I think of that sooner!" he asked shaking his head.
She laughed kissing his cheek.
"Well," Carlisle said, "I think you'll live." He handed Garret the bullet he'd just removed from his shoulder.
"I'm gonna turn it into a necklace," Garret said as he looked it over.
"Why?" Kate asked.
"To remember it takes a bullet to get a woman," Garret answered.
