I'm back again with another chapter. Spencer makes the choice to confront Wren. How will this go?

Chapter 25: Facing The Truth

Spencer walked out of Emily's apartment to get in her car. Her head was throbbing with all this latest information. Spencer has had her questions about Wren, but never in a million years did she expect him to be a con artist. Wren made his way into her life and her family. Wren charmed her mother with his educational background. He won her father over with his financial states. He won her over by being charming and romantic. Wren was always a little mysterious to Spencer, but she used to like that. Now, Spencer is looking back at everything about their relationship wondering how much of it was real and how much of it was play. Was he playing her the whole time? They were together for a year before Wren proposed. Their relationship did start to change after that point. Once they were engaged, that was when Wren started being cold towards her. Is that when the con started or was using Spencer always his intentions? Spencer paced around clenching her fists into her hair. How could she have been so stupid not to realize?

Then, there's the Toby part of this drama. All this time Spencer had been feeling guilty. Like she wasn't being fair to both men. Toby made Spencer feel things she never thought she could feel. They had fun together and connected on a deep level. It always made her wonder what they could be if there was no Wren in the picture. Just when Spencer thought she made up her mind, Wren came back. Wren tried to ruin Toby's career. Did he do it because he was jealous, threatened by Toby, or was Wren worried Toby would ruin his plan? Spencer considered many times breaking things off with Wren for Toby. She thought picking Wren would protect Toby's career. Even though it broke her heart to say goodbye to Toby, she was willing to make things work with Wren. With this newfound information about her fiancé, she's more lost than ever before. Spencer yelled up at the sky in frustration. Her eyes were wet and burning with rage.

Spencer heard Emily's front door open then close. Spencer knew who was coming just by the rhythm of his footsteps on the sidewalk. She crossed her arms over her chest and sighed heavily.

"I thought about going home, but I realized I don't know what to do when I get there," Spencer said.

"You can't confront him alone," Toby said.

She turned to face him. "You should have told me."

"It was just a suspicion. I didn't even know this was his plan until today."

"You should have told me the second you suspected something was wrong!" She yelled.

"I thought you would assume I was just trying to break you guys up."

"You don't know what I would have thought! And you have no idea what I am thinking right now!"

"Before you knew all of this, I come to you and say, 'Spencer, Wren is using you, but I have no proof,' are you telling me that would have gone over well with you?"

"Of course, it wouldn't have gone well, but I would have considered that before…Before I said yes to London."

"You're doing it again," Toby said. "You're pissed at Wren and you're taking it out on me. You know what? Go ahead because I can take it. I will always be that person you can unload all your feelings on."

"Don't be nice to me when I'm mad at you!" She yelled. "It makes it very hard for me to yell at you!"

"Wait? You're mad at me? Yes, I should have said something before about all of this, but I thought you'd at least understand why I waited."

"Because if you said something before, I wouldn't have gone through the heart break of saying goodbye to you!"

"What?" Toby asked, confused.

Spencer hadn't realized she was crying until she felt the tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Just…" She tried to take the words back, but they were already out. Instead of explaining more, she decided to change the subject. "I need to focus on Wren and what to do about him."

Toby took a step closer and said, "you shouldn't go alone."

"You can't be with me when I confront him either."

"I'm not leaving you alone with that guy. I'm going with you."

"No!" She shouted. Then, softly, "I can't take the risk that he'll try to hurt you again."

"Wren's a coward. He can't confront people himself; he gets other people to do the dirty work for him," Toby said. "Plus, I don't care what he could do to me."

"But I care," Spencer said. "Please, just let me handle this. You can't come with me."

"Okay," Toby reluctantly agreed. "Call me if you change your mind."

"I already texted Wren asking him if he'd be home for dinner. He said he'll be there at five, so I should get over there now."

Toby stood back and watched while Spencer got into her car. She started it up then drove out of the parking lot. Toby tapped his foot against the pavement and blew a puff of air out of his mouth. His mind swam with images of Wren hurting her. How can anyone expect Toby to just stand by and let her go alone?

Spencer paced around the Hastings kitchen biting her fingernails. It's a quarter after five, so Wren should be here at any moment. The timer on the stove was on to give Wren the illusion that Spencer had been working on making dinner. A car door closing from outside alarmed her. This is it… she took a breath. The front door opened, and Wren walked in with his usual charming smile. It almost amazes Spencer how good of an actor he can be. She should know by now. He had always been able to turn it on and off whenever he pleased.

"Hey, love." Wren kissed her on the corner of her mouth.

"Hi," Spencer forced a smile. It surprised her how easy it was to pretend like nothing was wrong. Then again, she too has been living with some lies of her own.

Wren eyed the room and squinted, "why are we eating dinner in your mum's kitchen? I thought the whole point of the barn was to have some privacy."

"Um…" She tried to think of a reason. "I didn't have some of the ingredients I needed to make dinner. My mom is a lot better at grocery shopping than I am. I guess that is one of the things I didn't think about before getting my own place." She forced a laugh.

"Alright."

Wren took off his jacket then hung it up on one of the kitchen chairs. He walked over to the fridge to scavenger. He shut it quickly and gripped a fist into his hair.

"Your mum doesn't leave beer in this fridge," said Wren.

"Oh, that is right. I forgot." Spencer facepalmed herself. "Silly me. We do have whiskey or gin in the cabinets if you would like to make yourself a drink."

"Or" Wren said and grinned at her. "You could make it for me. I'd like a vodka soda on the rocks with lime."

Wren took a seat on the couch, kicked off his shoes, then put his feet up on the coffee table. The coffee table that Mrs. Hastings got from her mom as a housewarming gift. Spencer made his drink the way he likes it. She brought it to him and set it on a coaster in front of him. Spencer took a seat on the rightful foot stool in front of him.

"Wren, there's something I think you and I should talk about."

Wren took a sip of his drink and hummed with happiness. He was happy about something. Spencer had no clue what. Were things going according to his plan? Did he do other things with Jenna that made him this happy?

"Is this more about moving to London?" Wren asked. "Darling, I told you. Everything is going to work out fine."

"It's not that. It's something else. This is something that's been weighing on me for a while. I realize that if you and I are going to have a successful marriage it's important for us to be honest with each other. Don't you agree?"

"Of course."

Spencer took a breath and said, "while you were in London, I spent a lot of time with the carpenter…Toby. We got close and one night, we kissed. I didn't stop the kiss, but I've been feeling pretty guilty about it ever since."

Wren shook his head. He gritted his teeth and said, "I knew it." Wren got off the couch. "I knew that carpenter was after you!"

Spencer stood up and said, "Wren, it wasn't like that."

Wren spun around to look at her. "Did he kiss you or did you kiss him?"

"I kissed him." Spencer stepped closer. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. You were away at London, I got lonely, and Toby was there."

Wren gripped his hair. "Do you have feelings for that carpenter? You must have. You wouldn't care so much about his job if you didn't."

"Wren, I know I messed up and I'm sorry. I promise, I don't have feelings for T…that carpenter. I just said all those things to save Toby's job because I believe he's a good worker. I felt bad after I rejected him, so I wanted to clear the air with him before starting my next chapter with you." Spencer forced herself to take Wren's hand. "I know you're angry, but if we're getting married, I want there to be no secrets between us."

"Yes, going into marriage with no secrets would be terrible," Wren said. He took a breath and gave her hand a light squeeze. "Thank you for telling me. I hope one day I'll be able to forgive you."

"You still want to marry me now after knowing about the kiss with Toby?"

Wren nodded, "I do. Nothing can keep me from going through with this plan…Plan of our future together."

"Is there anything you want to tell me?" She asked. "I was honest with you, so now I'm hoping you'll be honest with me. Have there been any secrets you've been hiding from me? Anything you want to get off your chest before the big wedding?"

They sat in a moment of silence. Wren looked as if he were thinking about something. He just shrugged.

"No, oh wait, yes, one thing," he said. "I'm thinking of changing my specialty to neuro. I had fun in ortho, but I've found a new love in neuro."

"Oh!" Spencer nodded, faking enthusiasm. "Okay. That's…interesting and not what I was expecting."

"Are you okay with me doing this?" Wren asked. "I realize that would put me through another two years of training. London has a wonderful medical school."

This was the breaking point for Spencer. Spencer let out a sudden low-pitched scream. She buried her face in her hands and started laughing and crying.

"I just…I can't," she lifted her face and shook her head. "I don't understand."

"Sweetie, I know this is a lot to ask, but I really want to do this." Wren reached for her hand…

Spencer jumped away from him and started yelling.

"I don't understand how you do it! How are you so good at lying? How do you manage to sit there with a straight face knowing every word that you tell me…that you have told me since day one is a lie! It's all lies coming from you!"

Wren looked shook. "What are you talking about? You're the one who kissed the carpenter."

"I'm talking about you going behind my back, hooking up with some random woman, and using me!"

"What?" Wren deserves an Oscar for his bewilderment. "I don't know what you're…"

"Stop with the lies Wren!" Spencer yelled. "I know the truth! It is over! We're not getting married."

"Yes, we are," he insisted.

"You only want to marry me to get my dad's money!"

Wren shook his head and chuckled, "it was that carpenter, wasn't it? Did he fill your head with this?"

"Who I found out from or how I found out doesn't matter," she said. "What matter is, I know the truth and your plan failed."

"Don't you see what that guy is doing? He is trying to get between us. He's telling you awful stuff about me so he can pretend to be the hero, and swoop in and get you! He blackmailed me at his last appointment with me."

"Give it up," Spencer said.

"No, listen to me," Wren grabbed her by the shoulders. "He threatened to come after my medical license. Toby told me all he wants is to win you over so he can marry you and you will be his sugar mama."

Spencer sneered in his face, "That is exactly what you've been doing. Can you not make this conversation about Toby? You're the one who's been using me since the start."

"Not true," he said.

"Who is Jenna Marshall?" She asked.

Wren froze and said, "I don't know."

Spencer shook him off her shoulders. "Another lie! She's your mistress! Wren, if Jenna's the one you've wanted to be with all along, why don't you just go be with her!"

"Because she's not rich!" Wren shouted. "She doesn't have the money or the status! She is everything my parents are against!"

Spencer had that feeling again. The need to break something. Wren's nose was right there on his face. She made a fist and jerked her arm forward. Her eyes widened when her fist connected with the bridge of his nose. Wren's eyes watered and he cupped his nose.

"Ow! You bitch!" He sneered.

Spencer stood there angry, but slightly surprised with herself. She knew she wanted to hit him. She just didn't expect that she'd have the courage to actually do it. Wren held his nose. When he looked at his hand, there was an impressive amount of blood on the palm of his hand.

"Wow," Wren laughed and shook his head. "It took you long enough. I was thinking you were a hopeless romantic, so that was my best way in."

"So, it's true," Spencer gritted her teeth and said, "You were using me. This whole time! It was really your plan all along to fool me."

"Well, actually, my first idea was to go for your sister, but I guess you were just way too easy."

Spencer frowned. She wanted to punch him again. A blooded and broken nose was not enough.

"I hoped you would never figure it out," he said. "I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for that damn carpenter."

"You know what they say about hope, it breeds eternal misery," Spencer smiled slightly, then spat back at him. "Your plan failed. It's over."

Wren shook his head, smiling, "oh, I don't think so. I know how you're still willing to do anything to save that carpenter's career. I can make sure he never gets another job again."

"Why can't you just hop on a plane with Jenna, go away, and just leave me alone!"

He shrugged and said, "I've gotten this far with my plan. I'm thinking I should stick it out to the end. I believe it was you who once said, 'if you want something bad in life, you must do whatever it takes to make it happen. Well, I want to be rich again and this is the quickest way to do it."

"You're a Doctor, Wren!" Spencer yelled. "Or is that a lie too?"

"No, I'm a real Doctor, I just hate it."

"When you were in London last month, was Jenna the friend you went with?" She asked.

"Don't pretend like I betrayed you by doing that when you had that carpenter up in your bedroom the night we broke up."

"Well, one, Toby was just doing what you could never do, and two, you were using me the entire time, so now, that I think back to the last few months, I wish I had done a lot more with that carpenter."

"That's another reason I can give people not to hire Toby in the future," said Wren. "He'll break into your bedroom and fuck your fiancé!"

Spencer smirked and said, "yes, and she'll suck his dick as a thank you."

Wren crossed his arms, "I wonder how mommy and daddy would react to the news that their daughter screwed with the carpenter."

"I think their reactions will go a lot better after I tell them that bastard Doctor was just using their daughter to get their money."

"Not just use their daughter for money," Wren stated darkly. "But he kills her, blames that carpenter for it, and then skips out of town with millions of dollars in his pockets! I think we'll elope and get this over with tonight!"

Wren raised his hand to strike Spencer across the face. A strong hand reached out to clamp around Wren's wrist. He looked up in shook at a pair of fiery blue eyes baring back at him, daring him to make a move.

"Touch her and the carpenter will kill you," Toby snarled.

Toby's grip on Wren's wrist tightened as the two men stared each other down. Wren finally backed down against Toby's intense gaze. Just then, the three of them heard a pair of heels coming downstairs.

"The police will be here any minute now," Mrs. Hastings said.

Mrs. Hastings reached the living room. She crossed her arms and gave Wren the coldest look Spencer had ever seen. Wren forced an awkward smile as a last attempt to seem innocent.

"Hello, there Mrs. Hastings, you're looking wonderful this evening."

Mrs. Hastings stood keeping a stern look at the young Doctor as she taped her left heel against the wood floor.

Woah! What a chapter! Everyone knows the truth about Wren. What does this mean for Spencer and Toby going forward? I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I only have a few more left to write. Please write a review. (:
