You're someone who I can't have

A person I have to forget

My love is far away"

Mana stands in a frozen state. Her mouth opens, but the words refuse to come out of her mouth.

"Well?" Kaiba demands with his dagger eyes.

"I-" Mana begins nervously.

"Spit it out already before I throw you in prison for conspiracy against national artifacts!"

Mana tenses and can feel Mr. Muto and Yugi are getting scared now.

"Look CEO Kaiba, I understand she lied that there were no visitors, but accusing her of conspiracy-" Mr. Muto began but was silenced by the death glare Seto shot him.

"Mokuba," Seto began with an icy tone, "Hand me the file."

Mana stared in horror as Mokuba took out from the briefcase he held a yellow folder.

She could have sworn she saw Mokuba give her a sad frown as he handed his brother the file.

Seto cleared his throat before beginning with a mocking tone, "Mana Renge, or in Japanese ่“ฎ่ฏ ใƒžใƒŠ."

"It says here you've been orphaned since birth. Your father, some drunkard who got your mother pregnant, abandoned her during her pregnancy. Your motherโ€ฆ"

Seto scoffed.

"She put you up for adoption the second you were born. The woman committed suicide a few days after she gave birth. She refused to name you or claim you. Tsk, what a coward."

"Stop-" Mana whispered.

She didn't want anyone looking at her with pity again.

She couldn't handle it again.

"You were given a name at the orphanage. Although you were a bright child no one adopted you. You were given a full-ride scholarship to attend the University of Domino City. You majored in archaeology graduating on the honor roll."

"Seto I don't know why you're bringing all of this information up-" Yugi cut in but Seto narrowed his eyes on the document.

"Here's some interesting news in case you didn't know," Seto smirks.

"1982, September 20."

Mana looks at him, her face now pales with fear.

"It was reported that a four-year-old could read the hieroglyphics displayed at Egyptian exhibition. Does it ring a bell, Mana?"

Refusing to let her answer, Seto continues, "You were seen as gifted but your academics weren't extraordinary. Average grades and test scores. So how did you understand those hieroglyphics? Studies were performed on you and your brain but nothing. Moving on to 1992, the year where the dreams begin. You began scaring your young peers and orphan instructors. Talking about faraway lands, lavishing green rivers, and people who never existed. You were seen as an outcast, a mentalist."

"Stopโ€ฆ" Mana whispered weakly, trying to drown away the depressing and gray memories from her mind.

"So you were placed in therapy and a mental session for the next few days but freed as the dreams mysteriously vanished and you were back to your old self. Few years go by and you win a full-ride scholarship to the University of Domino City. Hmm, no this can't be right. It says here you went under Egyptology major but-"

Seto's face forms a sly smile.

"2002, September 20. It states in this record that you, Mana Renge, were removed and prohibited from the Egyptology program of the University. I quote "The student refused to comply with the Professor's tasks and lessons. The student deemed the lessons as incorrect, false, and misleading regardless of not having backup resources to defend her point." Wow, I don't know if that was stupid on your part or stupid from the program to offer you a full-ride scholarship."

"Seto enough! Can't you see you're hurting her-" Yugi began but was silenced by the CEO's yelling.

"No! You shut up!" Seto sneered before adding with disgust, "Ugh, teenagers!" He focused his eyes back on the file. "As far as this document tells me, she was kicked out of her department! She only graduated with a minor in archaeology, and that shows that she lied when she applied for the position. Even worse, she's damn mental. I saw the camera footage from the excavation site that day she was alone. There was no one there!"

"What-" Mana let out, staring in horror at everyone's pale expressions.

"She's crazy, a complete delusional. You, Yugi Mutuo, should agree with me. She was just accusing you that she saw you at the site. You can place a charge on her-"

Mr. Muto and Yugi began advocating for Mana and soon everyone began to argue with one another.

However, to Mana, they all seemed so far away. All the yelling was muffled and echoey. She just stood there, silently.

If it wasn't for Seto yanking her arm, Mana wouldn't have realized she had spaced out.

Bringing his face near her, his eyes burned with rage as he told her, "Consider yourself lucky, you freak. I'll have my eyes on you."

Letting her go, Seto storms out of the room. Mokuba and his crew followed him. Ishizu Ishtar stands, unsure if she should talk to Mana or follow Seto.

"Ms. Ishtar, keep up!" Seto's voice calls from down the hall.

Ishizu Ishtar only apologetically looks at Mana before following Seto.

Making her way next to him, Ishizu Ishtar sighs.

"You said you needed to show me something?"

"Yes, we just uncovered it a few days ago."

"Well, I have to go back to Japan later today. I'll see it on Friday." Seto coldly replies.

"Very well," Ishizu replies.

After Seto and his crew had left, Mana didn't realize Mr. Muto was calling for her.

"Mana! Mana!"

"Huh?" she replied, casting her attention on him.

"Oh dear, are you alright?" Mr. Muto asked in concern, making Mana's heart swell in guilt.

"Why are you so kind to me?" Mana let out, tears running down her face.

Mr. Muto smiles sadly at her.

"Not everyone is perfect Mana. I'm disappointed you lied to me but, I don't see you as a mental. Did I not tell you of how I uncovered the Nameless Pharaoh's tomb? I've seen weird things myself. It's okay."

Mana smiled sadly at him.

"Thank you, Mr. Muto."

Mr. Muto smiled at her.

๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““๐““

It had been a few days since Mana went back to her routine before the whole incident. She had found out that she would now be working as a personal assistant for Mr. Muto. She was under his total responsibility and guardianship. It was to ensure she wouldn't be kicked out of the project nor sent to an asylum by Seto.

When she had zoned out during the argument, Mr. Muto offered to take care of Mana as his sole responsibility. He didn't want Kaiba kicking her out of the expedition.

The dreams had miraculously disappeared after Mana began taking the sleeping pills Seto instructed her to take. He didn't wish to embarrass his reputation if she had a mental episode at the hotel they were staying at.

Mana owed Mr. Muto her life. She didn't know what she would have done if she got sent away. Even after the incident, Mana had not heard a single word from Ishizu Ishtar. Something was happening, something big, and Seto nor Ishizu Ishtar wanted them to find out.

But what?

Though she reestablished her connection and image with her coworkers, there was still one more person Mana avoided talking to these past days.

Yugi Mutou.

It wasn't till Friday night that Mana realized she owed him a huge apology. She had spooked the poor man with her ridiculous behavior. It was the only right thing to do.

Walking into the workroom, Mana saw Yugi trying to solve the Millennium Puzzle. A small television was on the corner of the table Yugi was working on.

He noticed her walk in and smiled nervously. Mana waved awkwardly.

There was a minute of silence before they greeted each other.

"Hi."

"Hi."

There's an awkward pause.

Rubbing her shoulder nervously, Mana lets out a defeated sigh.

"I just came to apologize for my behavior earlier this week. I was extremely rude. I deeply apologize though you probably think the worst of me now."

She bowed.

Yugi smiled at her, accepting her apology.

"Apology accepted. And you're wrong. I don't see you any different than my Grandpa"

Mana smiled, grateful at Yugi's reply.

He then whispered, "Don't think about what Kaiba said. Though, there is something weird with how everyone's acting huh?"

"Yes, I'm with you on that. I know they're hiding something from us."

Yugi chuckles, making Mana smile before her attention is on the small television on his work table.

An Asian drama is being played.

Yugi follows her attention and laughs nervously.

"Haha, yes. My girlfriend Anzu watches this Korean drama and she begged me to give it a try. So far it's great!"

"Oh, you have a girlfriend? How long have you been with her? What's the drama about? How's the puzzle coming along?" Mana asked rapidly.

"Woah Woah Woah," Yugi began, "You sure don't hold back," he added with a small laugh.

"Ooops, sorry. I get carried away." Mana chuckled.

"Ah, it's fine. To answer your first set of questions, I have been dating Anzu since my freshman year of University. I'm also an alumnus from the University of Domino City, like you. Contrary to Kaiba's statement of me, I'm not a teenager. I'm the same age as him, twenty-two."

Mana almost choked out loud.

Seto Kaiba wasโ€ฆ younger than her?!

"We've been dating for five, close to six years."

"Aw, where does she go?" Mana eagerly coughed out, trying to cover up her embarrassment.

"She studied in New York City at The Juilliard School. She just finished performing her first Broadway show as we speak!"

"You sure love her."

Yugi blushed.

Mana giggled.

"Even though she's so far away, we call or facetime and I feel closer to her when I watch the dramas she recommends to me."

Mana's heart swells.

Oh, this man is so precious.

"This one I'm watching is called Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. It's about this young woman in the modern world who falls into this lake during a total solar eclipse and she's transported to the year 94, during the Goryeo Dynasty. She falls in love with Wang So, who's the fearsome fourth Prince in line to the throne. The girl, Hae Soo finds herself unwittingly caught up in palace politics and the rivalry among the princes as they fight for the throne."

"Ohhh." Mana lets out, intrigued about the show.

"I'm watching the last episode right now, while I work on solving the puzzle. So far, I just have the base of something."

"Well, it's far more than what Kaiba's scientists could do."

"Hmm, I guess you're right. Look! It's about to end."

Both turn towards the mini television.

"I'm sorry for leaving you alone." The protagonist, Hae Soo, sobs as she gazes at the portrait of her past lover. "I'm so sorry!" She continues to cry before the scene changes from a modern art gallery to the Goryeo Dynasty. The King, Wang So, turns around and gazes heartbroken at the audience. "If we are not from the same worldโ€ฆ I will find you. Myโ€ฆ Soo."

Mana smiles before looking towards Yugi who wipes tears from his eyes.

"In the end, they couldn't be together. That's so sad."

Mana smiled sadly.

"Just like the Nameless Pharaoh and Dark Magician Girl," Mana whispers to herself.

Such a tragic love.

"You said something?"

"Huh?" Mana replied, embarrassed once again for getting caught.

"I said uh- I'll see you tomorrow Yugi. Try not to stay up too late, okay?"

Yugi smiled.

"Alright, thank you, Mana. The same goes for you. You rest well."

With a wave, Mana disappeared from the room.

Leaving Yugi completely alone with the puzzle.

๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•๐“•

Mana felt bad for ignoring Yugi's demand. After leaving Yugi alone in the lower level since an hour ago, she still hasn't left. Instead of leaving, she's been staring at the other millennial items stored in the second level of the museum.

Reading the words on what she thought looked like a wand, Mana frowned.

Her heart ached.

"Why do I always come back to you?" she asked softly.

The stick that looked like some sort of crook suddenly glowed.

"What the-" Mana gasped, stepping back in fear.

Suddenly a flashback appeared.

She was hiding inside what seemed like a large clay vase.

"How gruesome!" a servant spoke in disgust.

"You know the Prince. After the Pharaoh's death, have you noticed how the Prince became more ruthless?"

"Does this- Uh- Do you know what Yami means?" they asked weakly before the other servant laughed.

"Oh, you don't know?" a chuckle was heard. "I see. You're the new one."

"The foreign traders named him. "Yami" means "darkness"."

"So he's being called-"

"Prince of Darkness."

Mana felt herself stiffen at the horror the servants murmured amongst themselves before they finished cleaning up the spilled blood and walking away.

With a deep sigh, she got out of the vase, and immediately her eyes landed on the spiky hair tips behind the pillar.

"Prince-" she began only for the boy to flinch away.

"Prince no-" she begged as she made herself towards him but stopped when she heard him whisper pleadingly, "Don't-please,"

"You shouldn't be listening to what they say. They don't know the weight you carry." Mana reasoned.

"But they're right. I've become scarier towards my people. They even call me Yamiโ€ฆ" he weakly replied from the other side of the pillar.

Mana huffed.

"Well, they're wrong. You're kind, gentle, and brave. Nothing like darkness or the ruthless King the foreigners' traders have depicted you as. I know your heart and that's why you're my best friend."

A soft chuckle was heard.

"Thank you."

"Yami," Mana said the name slowly.

"I like how it sounds. Yami. I think when I have a son-"

"Ew!"

Mana laughed at the Prince's reply from the other side of the pillar.

"In the future of course," Mana reasoned but the Prince continued, "Gross, I don't want to think of that."

Mana stuck her tongue out at him. "Well in the future, I'll name my son Yami."

There's a minute of silence before the Prince asks, "Why that awful name?"

"Hmm, well for you it might be awful but I'd like to change what the name means. Just because it means darkness, it doesn't mean it's bad. Without the darkness, the stars nor the moon wouldn't be able to shine."

The Prince chuckles again.

"Besides, I researched the name in Mahad's scrolls that come from foreign lands and kingdoms and apparently, Yami means "My lovely child" in some foreign lands. I'd like to call my son that."

Mana smiled when she heard the Prince laughing gently. She added softly, "I also want to name himโ€ฆ in dedication to you. My best friend."

The memory began to fade away and soon Mana was gasping for air as she fell towards the floor.

Mana coughs and winces at the pain in her heart. Why, why did this hurt so much? What was so special about that Prince she would dream?

Why did she yearn in her heart to know his name? To see him?

Why was he so important to her? Why did he feel so far away from her even though he was just a few feet away?

But most importantly, why did she feel that he was someone she had to forget. That besides her heart telling her he was someone she loved dearly, she felt she had to forget him. To let him go.

Just who was this Prince?

"Stop!" Mana cursed at herself, breaking her thoughts.

No, this couldn't be happening. Was Kaiba correct? Was she delusional?

However, what Mana didn't know was that Yugi was also experiencing something phenomenal a floor below her.

๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–๐“€–

"I got it! This puzzle is like a mini pyramid. So if I put this here and this one here-YES!" Yugi yelled happily.

The puzzle was almost completed, except for one final piece.

The centerpiece.

Grabbing the piece that held some sort of eye symbol, Yugi cautiously placed it in its place, and suddenly the puzzle began to flash menacingly.

Yugi quickly grabbed it with both his hands as it was now glowing.

"Hey! What gives?!" Yugi gasped in shock before the puzzle erupted with pink and orange trails of light into the room.

"Ah!" Yugi let out as the color of lights began to take the form of monsters.

The shape forms of lights then transformed into physical monsters.

Yugi gasped at the realization that these were monsters found in the popular card games.

Yugi looked around him in fear. Just what the heck was happening?

Suddenly, the duel monster, Kuriboh appeared in front of him. The small monster growled and threw himself at Yugi making the young man yell in fear.

Then it happened again, the puzzle began to glow brightly again.

Yugi stared at the puzzle, paralyzed in fear at what would occur next before the light consumed him.

There, in his place wasn't Yugi anymore but a different man.

Again, the duel monster Kuriboh growled at it but a fire glowing circle appeared at the bottom of where the man stood. Showing the monsters his powerful presence.

"Shadow creatures!" He began with an authoritative voice. His dark and firm expression showed he was not to mess with. He held the puzzle with one hand while he extended his other hand as a sign to banish the monsters.

"Begone, I command you! Return to the dark realm whence you came!"

Again, the glowing bright light surrounded the room and the monsters disappeared.

However, the man did not.

He stood in a confident stance.

"I've secured the most precious artifacts here, we've recovered stone carvings that depict the earliest known game played in Egypt. I'm sure you'll find it most familiar." Ishizu Ishtar spoke.

The CEO only nodded silently.

"Kaiba behold, the origin of duel monsters," she announced.

Kaiba walks inside the giant darkroom. The lights turn on and he sees it.

A giant limestone carving.

"It can't beโ€ฆ these carvings look like duel monster cards. Then that means your theory might be correct." he lets out, intrigued at the carvings.

"I see you've come to your senses, furthermore there's a theory that in ancient times these monsters were real Egyptian sorcerers who summoned monsters to Earth to do their bidding. But they soon realized that the monsters could not be controlled. They destroyed countless villages and brought Earth to the brink of destruction. The citizens turned to the Pharaoh for help. Though he could not permanently defeat the monsters he managed to use his magic to seal them away in stone tablets and bring peace to the world, however over time evil sorcerers learned how to control the monsters and release them from the tablets. With their army of powerful monsters, the sorcerer's were confident that no one could stand in their way, they betrayed the Pharaoh and waged an all-out war against him." Ishizu tells passionately.

She turns to another carving, and with a grim expression says, "This is the one you must look at."

"Mmm." Kaiba lets out.

"This carving is the reason I've called you tonight. It depicts one of the main conflicts in the war between the Pharaoh and his greatest opponent."

Kaiba looks at it unfazed.

"Closely examine this artifact. After this moment Kaiba, your life will never be the same." Ishizu affirms.

Kaiba examines the carving again real closely again, and when he spots it, he almost drops his briefcase.

The carving of the Pharaoh looks identical to Mr. Muto's grandson. But that's not possible!

"That's the Pharaoh?! But that's Yugi and the monster carved above him is the Dark Magician." Kaiba lets out.

"On the left is the sorcerer fighting against him. That's you Kaiba if you still have any doubt look at his monster. It's the Blue-Eyes White Dragon." Ishizu adds, paying close attention to how the CEO reacts.

"The hieroglyphics read that the mighty sorcerer marched into the Pharaoh's chamber and challenged him in his legion of noble magicians to a legendary duel with the fate of the world at stake." she continued.

"The Pharaoh accepted the sorcerer's challenge and their epic battle began. Both opponents unleash the most powerful monsters against each other. The sorcerer fighting to control the world and the Pharaoh and his loyal followers fighting to save it. Today, 5,000 years later, awful people, dangerous people strive to make this ancient battle play out once again."

"Now you're insane. These are all just myths."

"Do you not see? The monsters in these cravings and the monsters in the popular game card are the same. The only difference is that back then they were real and now they're just pictures on paper. Something has to happen for the monsters to come to life." She turned to the CEO, "Do you see now? That's why you're so attracted to the myth of the White Dragon. Perhaps in your past life, it was your monster. Do you believe in destiny Kaiba?" She tried to reason only to be rejected by the CEO.

"This can't be real. There's no way this piece of rock has got to be fake." Kaiba argued.

Suddenly Kaiba's head began to throb in pain.

"Ugh!" he yelled in pain.

"If you won't trust her words, then you must look back in time and experience the heart of the battle firsthand!" someone who wasn't Ishizu spoke to him in a chilling tone.

"Mr. Kaiba!" Ishizu yelled as Kaiba continued to yell in pain.

The room began to change and soon Kaiba's surroundings changed to a palace surrounded by flames.

"What is this place?" Seto talked to himself before standing in shock at the scene before him.

"Nope, not happening again. I'm going straight to my hotel room. Hahaha, no more fooling me." Mana talked to herself as she ran away from the Millennial Items.

"You're just tired, that's all. Nothing happened." she kept talking, refusing to believe how the items suddenly began to glow.

Finding herself in the hallway, Mana began to walk towards the elevator at the end of the hallway.

"Should I inform Yugi about what happened just now?" Mana asks.

"No no! He just forgave you for acting all weird and now if I come to him looking like a complete fool he'll definitely not think I'm sane."

Ugh! Why was this so hard?

A loud sound was heard just down the opposite hallway.

Mana froze.

That sounded like the balcony doors being slammed open.

Butโ€ฆ who could it be? Only Yugi, her, and a couple of security men were in the museum at this dark time?

Not realizing she was walking towards the balcony patio, it was too late for her to walk away once she saw the figure of a man just gazing towards the city of Cairo.

The outline of their spiky hair made Mana relax.

"Oh, it's just you, Yugi." Mana let out a shaky breath.

"You're done for the night?" she continued now with ease before the man turned to look at her.

Mana's breath gets caught in her throat, as she stares at the man before her. Her face, showing emotions of fear, agony, and distress.

There standing before her is the man who she's been plagued by their conversation, fragments of it invading her thoughts at random moments. She recalls looking him up, only to stare at the laptop forever, and feel like an idiot in the end.

He was never real.

She recalled being devastated. Perhaps she did dream him upโ€ฆ She wished she could have dreamed him up again. To meet him again, all the things she's wanted to say, all the questions occupying her mind.

Like why did she trust him to tell her about her dreams? What was it that lured her to his eyes so much?

Why was she so captivated by him?

But now, after all the things that happened, Mana knew he was never here. She had been delusional.

Yet, why was he in front of her? And instead of confronting him, she stands frozen in fear.

Why did her heart feel like it was physically being pulled by some string towards him?

"Youโ€ฆ" is all she could whisper before Yami takes a step towards her.

๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท๐“ท

"Now do you believe her?" The same chilling voice spoke again only for Ishizu Ishtar to ask the CEO if he was alright.

With a scoff, Seto turned around. Determined to not show in fear he felt.

"Thanks for the lecture but I make my own destiny. And I do what I want to do." Seto sneered before he began to walk out of the room.

Ishizu sighed but gulped.

She had to try one last time.

"Kaiba, what I thought you wanted were powerful monsters, the duel monster cards that surpassed the power of Exodia. What if I told you they were in front of your eyes the whole time."

"What?" the CEO stopped.

"Take a look at the top. They were the strongest and most feared creatures of annihilation; Obelisk the Tormentor, Slifer the Sky Dragon, the Winged Dragon of Ra. Control one and you can destroy a million armies. Wield all three and the planet itself will quake in fear."

"You're telling me some lunatic decided to make these shadow games as a card game for all ages?"

"These cardsโ€ฆ" Ishizu began, pointing at the monsters. "My boss, Pegasus, gave them to me for safekeeping. He realized that if these cards fell into the wrong hands they could bring about the end of the world. Once someone finds out how to bring life to the monsters in the cards, the shadow games return. He had me bury them in secret locations but the cards were discovered and I must find them and hide them once again."

"You mean someone already found the cards?

"Yes"

"Tell me who,"

"The Rare Hunters."

"Rare Hunters?"

"They are a ruthless underground sect of elite duelists. They rob and steal rare cards worldwide to sell on the black market for enormous profits, however, they keep the strongest cards for themselves to create powerful decks that destroy all opposition. They operate in shadow so they are nearly impossible to find. That is why I need your help to draw them out into the open."

"My help?"

"The display of the Millennial Items, plus the cards. All of those precious items in one location will-"

"I see. A trap that the Rare Hunters won't be able to resist. Such tempting bait, they'll come by the droves like vultures to a carcass."

With a final nod, Seto began to walk away.

Ishizu Ishtar sighed before adding, "You may not believe yet in destiny but before this showcase is done you will have to face your past."

"Hmm, you know I read that once in a fortune cookie. I'll have this under control."

"I thank you-"

"But I'm not doing this because of your Egyptian myths and your failure to complete your boss's task."

"I-" Ishizu Ishtar began only to scream in agony. She gasped for air and her panicked expression alerted Kaiba that something was not right.

"Argh!" she yelled in pain, placing both hands on her head.

"What's wrong?" Kaiba asked.

"Where's Yugi?" she asked.

"He stayed at the museum to work on the puzzle," he replied automatically.

"Where's Mana?" she then demanded.

"Now that you mention it, I haven't seen her since the morning." Kaiba stopped and thought for a moment before letting out, "And she hasn't checked in the hotel which means-"

Ishizu caught Kaiba's widened eyes.

"It's begun," Ishizu whispered in fear.

"What? What's begun?" Kaiba demanded.

Ishizu Ishtar looks at the CEO and with a frightening tone she replies, "It was never to happen, but after 5,000 years it did."

Ishizu Ishtar turns to look at the limestone tablet depicting the Pharaoh and the sorcerer.

"The shadow games begin again."
