I was still feeling the effects of the Dementors the week after the Quidditch match against Hufflepuff. I still had not told anyone, even Harry, about hearing my fathers last moments every time a dementor was near, nor did they even know about the dream I had on the plane to England 2 and a half years ago. I was not ready to admit I heard voices, considering the reaction Ron and Hermione had last year when Harry was hearing voices.
Our first Defense Against the Dark Arts class we had Lupin back as our Professor, who assured us we didn't have to write the Essay Snape had issued us about Werewolves. Hermione and I looked at eachother knowing we had finished ours together the previous night. So I raised my hand "Uh.. Professor.. For those of us that completed it already.. Could we still hand it in?" This got some snickers from the class, to which Professor Lupin smiled and nodded "Of course David, I would love to see what you and Hermione have written on the subject!" I grinned at Hermione, who grinned back "Thanks David" She whispered. We then began our lesson on Hinkypunks.
At the end of class Lupin called both Harry and I back. Lupin began "I heard about the match, I'm sorry about your broom Harry, is there no chance in fixing it?" Harry shook his head "No, the Tree smashed it to bits." Lupin nodded "The Whomping Willow was planted the same year I arrived at Hogwarts. Students used to play a game, seeing if they could get close enough to touch it. In the end a boy called Davey Cudgeon nearly lost an eye. Students were then forbidden to go near the tree." I nodded "It's odd that a tree that can do so much damage was planted on the grounds in the first place.. Wouldn't it be better in the forbidden forest?" Lupin didn't meet my eyes but instead looked at Harry when he asked "Did you hear about the Dementors?" Lupin nodded "Yes, I did. I don't think any of us have seen Professor Dumbledore that angry. They were growing restless for some time, furious at Dumbledore's refusal to come onto the grounds. I supposed they were the reason you fell?" Harry nodded, and I did as well "I.. Almost did.. Until I saw Harry fall and I kind of.. Snapped out of it." Harry the continued "Why? Why do they effect David and I so badly and not anyone else, are we just-" Lupin cut us off "It has nothing to do with weakness, or lack of courage" He looked at me before continuing "I'm not sure why they effect you David, however Dementors effect Harry worse than others because of the Horrors in your past that the others do not have. Dementors are amongst the foulest creatures to roam this earth, they infest the darkest and filthiest places. They glory in despair and decay. They drain peace, hope and happiness in the air around them. Even Muggles feel their presence, though they can not see them. Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, even happy memories, will be sucked out of you. If it can, the Dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce you to something like itself, souless and evil. You'll be left with nothing but your worst experiences. And the worst that has happened to you, Harry, is enough to make anyone fall off their broom." Harry was silent for a moment before side glancing at me and saying "When they are near me.. I hear Voldemort murdering my mum"
Lupin made a movement as if to grip Harry's shoulder, but thought better of it.. So I gently grabbed Harry's shoulder and said "I get it Harry.. Every time they are near.. I hear my father..I hear Voldemort killing him.. I get it." Lupin looked at me and nodded "Well that explains it then. You both have similar experiences. Which I am truely sorry for." I nodded "I mean.. I didn't witness it in person.. I had a dream coming to england.. And Professor Dumbledore confirmed it.. But knowing what I know now.. Makes it worse than a bad dream.. I see his final moments.. And I'm powerless to stop it.. To help him.. I never even met him.." I look down, and Harry takes his turn to grip my shoulder in solidarity. Lupin nodded "I'm sorry David, truly. You two carry a burden very few your age ever do. It is fate then, that you two are Mates. Take it from me, Having best friends to be there for you during your worst times, who choose to accompany you through them, is a blessing.. Even if things don't work out in the end..." He trailed off. Harry then said "If the Dementors come back... David and I are going to need to be able to protect ourselves.. And you made that dementor on the train go away." Lupin nodded "There are certain defenses a knowledgeable wizard or witch can use against Dementors.. But that was only one Dementor.. The more there are the harder it is to defend oneself." I then looked at him "But you could teach us Professor! You are our defense against the dark arts professor, and these are dark arts we need defense training from." Lupin hesitated before nodded "Very well, but I will have to teach you two after term has ended, I chose a very inconvenient time to fall ill" And with that, it seemed one of our problems would be fixed.. I wouldn't have to worry about being defensless against Dementors ever again.
This seemed to be turning up for the better, seeing as Ravenclaw flattened Hufflepuff in their match at the end of Novemeber. Gryffindor was not out of the running yet, so I could still help our team secure the House Cup for the first time in years. This put a pep back in Oliver Wood's step, and he worked us harder than ever. Plus the Dementors had not made another appearance on school ground, probably afraid of what Dumbledore would do to them if they did.
The end of term was near, and with it came another Hogsmede trip. Unfortunately Professor McGonagall refused to let me attend, so I spent the day at the Owlry, spending some time with Zeus. I had a letter for my mother, updating her on Gryffindor's chances of success for the Qudditch Cup, and begging her to let me come home for Christmas, possibly even bring Harry with me so we could get away from the Dementors. However I wanted to spend time with the only pet I could bring to Hogwarts. Zeus was happy to see me and affectionately nipped at my fingers when I pet him. I was interrupted when a voice behind me surprisingly said "Oh David, I didn't expect to run into you here." I looked at him and it was Professor Lupin. I shrugged and said "Wanted to send a letter to my mom, and since I couldn't go to Hogsmede I figured now was a good time to do it." He raised an eyebrow "why can't you go to Hogsmede, did you get in trouble with another professor?" I shook my head and chuckled slightly "Nah, I have surprisingly not done any troublemaking this year.. I'm actually keeping my promise of not looking for trouble. McGonagall doesn't want me to leave the castle with Black on the loose." Lupin nodded as he used one of the school owls to send a letter and asked "Black is dangerous of course, and I understand especially with Harry? But why you?" I sighed and said "Because as far as Black is Concerned, my father was a death eater that betrayed Voldemort. And I'm the one he can get revenge on. Although if he knew my father was a spy for Dumbledore.. Well he would want me more than Harry." Lupin looked away "Ahh, well had you asked me 12 years ago, I wouldn't have believed anyone capable of such hatred.. Well maybe one person.. But now.. I agree with Minerva. It is best you stay here where it is safe. Don't worry though David, I am sure the Dementors and Aurors will catch Black soon, then you will be enjoying Butterbeers with your friends again." I smiled at the thought and nodded, tying my note to Zeus's legs and giving him a soft "Off you go Zeus, thank you" He then flew off.
I then turned to Lupin and asked "You mentioned one person who was capable of what Black did, who was it?" Lupin refused to meet my eye and said "Someone who I had thought was a friend... until he betrayed us, and that David.. Is the worst kind of person, some are born dark.. But when they can turn their back on those they called friends, that takes evil to a new level.. Now I'd better get going.. I still have some catching up to do before Term ends.. But don't worry, I haven't forgotten my promise to you and Harry." He then turned and left. That leaving me wondering why he could possibly be referencing.
It turns out I missed a lot while mailing that letter, Fred and George gave Harry the Marauders Map, written by some troublemakers named Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs, which was a magical map that showed all of Hogwarts, secret passage ways and all, as well as everyone's location. Harry had used this to get into Hogsmede, where he learned Black and his father had been best friends in school, like brothers, so closer than even Harry, Ron and Hermione were. To Top that all off, he had learned Black had literally betrayed James leading to both his and Lily Potter's death, giving away their hiding spot. So that explained Black's focus on Harry.. And could still be after me since Black almost had his moment of glory stolen from him by my Dad.
Christmas vacation started, and my mother had not let me and Harry come home since.. And her words were "You and Harry are safer under Professor Dumbledore's watchful eye." so we had to stay on the campus during the holidays. It was a shame really, as I felt Harry needed the time away from the wizarding world, he was not taking the news of Black and his father being best friends well. Hermione even brought it up the next day "You really don't look well you know." Harry didn't make eye content "I'm fine." Hermione looked at both Ron and I before saying "Harry Look, I know you are really upset about what we heard the other day, but the thing is, you musn't do anything about it.." Harry looked up "Like what?" Ron then exclaimed "Like going after Black!" Harry was silent for a second before asking "Ron, Hermione, do you know what I hear everytime a Dementor is near? I hear my mum screaming and pleading with Voldemort. If you heard your mum screaming like that before she died, you wouldn't forget it that easily either, and if you found out someone who was supposed to be a friend of hers betrayed her-" Hermione cut him off "But there is nothing you can do about it! The Dementors will catch Black, and take him back to Azkaban which he deserved." Harry cut her off angerily "You heard what Fudge said, the Dementors don't affect him like they do everyone else, its not a punishment for him..."
I broke my silence and said "So you want to kill him." My friends looked at me as I said "I know the feeling. You know what I hear AND see every time a Dementor is near. I hear my Dad standing bravely against Voldemort to stop him from killing you and your parents. The One name that rings in my head. Harry Potter. When I close my eyes, I can see My Dad die. You know what I thought after Dumbledore confirmed my dream was real over 2 years ago? That if I ever met this Harry Potter.. I would hurt him.. Perhaps even kill him. HE was the reason my father was dead. But then I met you on the train.. Had I reacted on instinct, I would have been robbed of one of my best friends. Now I'm not saying you are going to be buddy buddy with Sirius Black, however you WOULD make my fathers sacrifice meaningless. The Man murdered 13 people with on spell, including his friend Peter Pettigrew, he would make quick work of you. You want revenge, let him be captured again, that way he will spend the rest of his life knowing he failed to kill you twice!" I took a deep breath. Hermione and Ron were in shock. "David.." Hermione started, I cut her off "Hermione, it needed to be said." She shook her head "No.. I didn't know you had.. Witnessed.. Your father death.. That explains the train... anyone.. ANYONE would be scared to witness that again." I shrugged and looked away "that isn't important now. What's important is Harry doesn't do anything stupid." Hermione sighed and said "Well we are going to talk about this later, but David's right, plus.. I doubt your parents would want risking your life for revenge Harry." Harry then muttered "Well Thanks to Black I don't know what my parents would have wanted, I never met them." Ron then brought up going to see Hagrid, which didn't ease Harry, who wanted more answers from Hagrid.
That didn't end up working for him, as Hagrid informed us that Buckbeak the Hippogriff was going to have a hearing to determine if he should be killed or if he was harmless, so our focus switched from Black to helping Hagrid prepare a defense for the hearing in April. This meant we spent most of christmas break in the library doing research. Come Christmas we had not found much, but we did get another breath of fresh air when it came to one of our conundrums. Harry got a Firebolt gifted to him from someone, we weren't sure who. Unfortunately Hermione kind of ruined it as she reported it to McGonagall who took it away to be tested for any jinx's, in case Sirius Black had been the one to send it. This lead to Harry and Ron being furious with her, and I had to admit, I wasn't happy either.. But I couldn't just abandon her.. Not with how I felt about her. So one day before new term I found her sitting in the Library and sat down across from her.
"Listen David, if you are going to lecture me about that ruddy broom I am not in the mood for it." I shook my head "No, I know you did what you thought was best for Harry's safety. Its sweet really. I don't personally think Black could be crafty enough to do such sutble magic after his theatrics with the Fat lady.. But its good to be cautious." She smiled slightly and said "So you don't think having a Firebolt stripped down is some sort of crime?" I rolled my eyes "Oh the highest, punishable by death.. But I think I can let you off this once" We met eyes and the little voice in my head said tell her.. Tell her now So I added "I can't lose you." She gave me a weird look "You can't?" I shook my head "You are very important to me Hermione Granger.." She continued to give me the look, I wasn't sure if it was good or bad.. So I added "Who else is going to keep me on my toes for house points?" She ended up rolling her eyes "Oh.. Of course. And Listen David.. We didn't get to address what was said at the beginning of christmas holiday. Witnessing what you have.. Knowing what you do.. Must be really rough.. And I'm so sorry you have to relive it every time a Dementor is near.. But if you ever, EVER need to talk, about Anything. I'm here for you." I nodded "Yeah.. I know. It's weird too.. Dumbledore thinks it has to do with some seer blood in me or something, just the moment I crossed into English borders I had that dream.. It was bad at the time.. Worse now, but I'm dealing with it. Lupin should be starting his anti-dementor training this week, so I will be okay" I smiled at her and she smiled back.. We then continued to study to help Hagrid.
That Thursday night was when Lupin decided to have his first Anti Dementor lesson in the history of magic classroom. Harry and I arrived first to a dark classroom. After a few seconds in the dark I pulled out my wand and said "You know what, this is almost creepier than a Dementor considering a ghost teaches this Class.." I pointed my wand at a few candles muttered "Incendio" and it lit up the room. Professor Lupin arrived 5 minutes later carrying a trunk and put it on Professor Binns desk. "What's that?" Harry asked "Another boggart" Lupin replied "I've been combing the castle since Tuesday and found this one lurking in Mr Filch's closet. It will turn into a Boggart when you or David are standing in front of it and I can store it away when we aren't using it. There is a cabinet under my desk I think it will quite like." I grinned "Thats Brilliant Professor." He nodded and then said "The spell I am going to teach you two is quite an advanced piece of magic, well beyond the Ordinary Wizarding level. It is called the Patronus Charm" Harry then side glanced at me and smiled slightly "Well then David should have no problem with it. He mastered the Disilliusionment Charm in our first year." I then side glanced at him and said through my teeth "Which you have just told a Professor who knows we have a history of breaking school rules, thanks mate."
Lupin gave me a weird look and said "Ahh.. Interesting.." Harry then whispered "Sorry mate.." and then a little louder "How does the spell work?" Lupin then said "Well when cast correctly it conjurs up a Patronus, which is like an Anti Dementor, which acts as a sort of guard between you and them. Patronus' are a kind of positive force, a projection of the very thing Dementors feed on, Hope,, happiness, the desire to survive. However since it is not a living thing the Dementor can not feed on it. But I must warn you, that the charm may be too advanced for you, many qualified wizards have trouble with it." I then asked "What does this Patronus look like?' Lupin then said "It is specific to the wizard, some theories believe it to be a reflection of the wizards soul, of course no hard evidence has been found to prove this theory. Now the Patronus is cast by uttering a specific phrase and thinking of the happiest thought or memory that you can. Picture one now gentlemen and try uttering the spell "Expecto Patronum"
I pulled out my wand, and noticed Lupin look at it and then a look of shock crossed his face. He said nothing though, so I tried to concentrate on a happy memory. Which I suprisingly felt was hard to do, since I spent most of my childhood bullied and not liked. However I remembered the day that changed my life forever.. The day Albus Dumbledore came to my front door and told me I was a Wizard.. How he set fire to my bookshelf and put it out with his wand. I then focused on it really hard and chanted "Expecto Patronum, Expecto Patronum!" I chanted this a few more times and nothing happened when Harry had a puff of smoke come out of his wand. Lupin said "Good good. Harry if you want you can try with the Boggart. David I suggest standing at the other end of the classroom to avoid the... side effects. I would also suggest thinking of a happier memory." I nodded and went to the other side of the room and tried to think of a happier memory. What was happier than finding out I was a Wizard? Meeting my friends? Being sorted into Gryffindor? Winning the house cup in my first year? Winning my first Quidditch match, knowing I played a huge part in it? Yes that was happy. I was going to used that.
After Harry had turn, He mentioned he heard his father, and this lead to Lupin losing his composure as it turned out they were friends back in the day. But he kept it together for me to have my turn. I stood in front of the trunk as Lupin said 'Remember, Expecto Patronum." I nodded and pointed my wand at the trunk and said in a determined voice "Ready." Lupin opened the trunk and out came the Dementor. I focused very hard on my first match, picturing myself jumping off my broom, leaping over a Slytherin chaser and tossing the Quaffle going in 'such a waste of pure magical blood' I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to focus on the memory and not Voldemort's voice "Expecto Patronum! Expecto Patronum!" A puff of white smoke came out of my wand, The Dementor halted for a second. "You shall not live forever. One day you shall die and I shall have my dignity back" The white smoke vanished and the Dementor came forward again "You should know, I have taken measure to never die and killing Harry Potter shall seal it. Goodbye Ernest Moore, Such a waste of pure wizarding blood. AVADA KADAVRA." I fell backward onto the ground, my vision bluring. Lupin took care of the Boggart and handed me chocolate "Outstanding first try David! Harry was right, a whisp of smoke on your first attempt with a Dementor!" I then groaned "It didn't work." He nodded "For a second it did, and that is not something to shrug off David, I doubt many people in this school could pull that off, even a 7th year student." I then muttered "Hermione probably could" I then thought...Hermione... Hermione made me happy..Yes Hermione would do it. When I saw her right after she was un-petrified last year. That rush of warmth I felt.. Yes that was my happiest memory by far. That would work. So I said "Let me give it one last try." Lupin hesitated before nodded "Okay, but then I must insist you get some rest.. It is late and this spell is very taxing."
I stood up and pointed my wand at the trunk "Do it." I said. He opened the trunk and the Dementor popped out. I then closed my eyes and thought of Hermione.. How I had missed her last year when she was petrified, felt like a hole had been ripped out of my chest.. And how I felt when I saw her in that Corridor after we had escaped the chamber of secrets.. The happiness I felt, not only knowing my father had been good all along, but that she was alive, and there with me. Her running to hug me, and hugging me tightly, the warmth I felt. "You figured it out.. I knew you would!" I then opened my and yelled "EXPECTO PATRONUM." Nothing, "I knew you would come Lord Voldemort" I shook my head "No!" "Either way, you were very Brave" I continued to picture Hermione saying those words to me, the rush of pride I felt, hope that made she felt the same way about me that I did about her, and bellowed "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" I then saw something shoot out of my wand.. Looked.. Feline almost, not a full form and hard to make out, but there were some features there for sure. The Dementor stumbled back and Lupin stood in front of it and coaxed it back into his trunk. I stumbled back and leaned against a desk, completely out of energy. Lupin looked a little shocked, but clapped none-the-less.
He handed me more chocolate and said "Well done David.. Well done.. However.. I have to ask.. Where did you get that wand?" I looked at the one in my hand, quickly inspecting it and absentmindedly running my finger over the lions head carving on the base. "Olivanders before I started school. He said the Wand belonged to one person before.. A powerful wizard, said it came into his possession 13 years ago.. Why?" He held a hand out "May I?" I nodded and handed my wand to him. He inspected it himself and said "Olivander was right. This Wand once belonged to a very talented Wizard.. A friend of mine and Harry's father. Or he was.. Until he betrayed us and joined the Enemy. It made no sense to us.. He died 13 years ago. Hopefully you forge a brighter path for this wand." He handed it back to me. I then asked "Sir, who's wand was it?" He didn't say, instead saying "A story for another time I am afraid, It is late and you both have classes in the morning. It would be irresponsible of me as your Professor to keep you up any later. Goodnight, get some rest. Same time next week!" And with that our first lesson as over.. And I begged us the Questions.. Since Lupin knew James Potter, he had to know Sirius Black.. And who was the owner of the wand I had... could it have been Sirius Black.. Was I in possession of the wand that murdered 13 muggles with one spell?! Perhaps more importantly... was he after me to get it back?
Ravenclaw was narrowly beaten by Slytherin, which meant Gryffindor was truely back in the running to win the Quidditch Cup, so Oliver increased our practices to 5 times a week. Harry hadn't gotten his Firebolt back yet and January passed us by he began to get very impatient.. And understandably so. Our Seeker on a firebolt would be a for sure victory, and I couldn't give mine up as most of our plays took advantage of either its speed, or the focus the opposing team would have on me. The Anti-Dementor Lessons weren't going very well either. I couldn't produce what was called a corporal patronus, that is one that had solid shape. Nor could I hold the whispy patronus I could conjur for very long. Barely kept one Dementor at bay.. And if multiple swarmed the stadium again I would stand no chance. I couldn't even think of a happier memory than the one about Hermione.. And I was too afraid of losing her friendship by trying to create a new one by asking her out or even confessing my feelings. Lupin was very impressed with us however, and even treated us to Butterbeers the lesson before our match against Ravenclaw. Of course Harry had to sour the mood by asking what was under Dementor's hoods, leading to the reveal of the Dementors kiss, and souring Lupin's mood slightly, so I didn't feel it was a good idea to ask who the previous owner of my wand was. It seemed I would have the rest of the year to ask that anyways.
Luckily Harry got his Firebolt back that night, so things were looking up for our match. The down side is we also discovered that Crookshanks had eaten Scabbers.. Or at least the evidence pointed towards it. So much so even I couldn't take her side "Listen Hermione" I had said " I love cats as much as the next guy, and I do have Hermes at home, and I like Crookshanks, but all the evidence points to him offing Scabbers. He's just doing what cats do!" This made Hermiones eyes well up "Ron and even Harry I understand.. But you David? I thought you were my best friend! That I could count on you taking my side! I can't take this right now, I have too much school work to do..and Hagrids hearing...just.. Go practice for your match!" She then ran up to her dorm, leaving me feeling like complete garbage.
The Morning of the match the whole school gawked at the presence of two firebolts on the Gryffindor table. Harry's of course looked better than mine since his was brand new and mine technically had been a prototype and had been used for a year and a half. Mafloy seemed jealous as well, but he still had to make a dig at Harry "You think you can handle that broom Potter" Harry then replied "Yeah, reckon so." He then added "Too bad it doesn't come with a parachute, in case you get too near a Dementor." Harry then replied "Pity you can't attach an arm to yours so it can catch the snitch for you." The Gryffindor team laughed. Malfoy then leered at me since I laughed the hardest "I don't suppose you are bringing a blindfold so you don't cower in fear when the Dementors show up?" I smirked "Why? How else would I be able to do a believable impression of you?" I then grabbed my arm and mimicked thrashing on the ground and squealed in a high pitch voice "It's killed me, it's killed me!" The Gryffindor team burst out laughing again. Malfoy huffed and walked away.
An hour later we were suiting up on the changing rooms. I of course spellotaped my wand to my arm in case Dementors showed up. Surprisingly Wood had no real pep talk for us, he simply said "You all know what you need to do out there. If we lose this match we are out of the running, just.. Just fly like you did last night and we'll be okay." I knew nerves were getting to him, so one look at the twins and I began to chant "GRYFFINDOR! GRYFFINDOR! GRYFFINDOR!" The rest of the team jumped in chanting as we left the changing rooms.
Right out of the gate Katie got the Quaffle and swerved in between Ravenclaw chasers with Angelina and I running interference, she then scored, giving us an early lead. I then quickly intercepted a pass from one Ravenclaw chaser to another and bolted for the goal posts, doing a roll to confuse the Keeper before shooting it at the left hoop and scoring. Either Ravenclaw had basically given up, or they were hoping their Seeker, Cho Chang, would catch the snitch before Harry, because their defense wasn't at the level it had been with Slytherin. As on of their chasers pelted for Wood I put full throttle into my Firebolt and shot past him, twisting and cutting in front of him, causing his shot to be off course. I then quickly stepped on my firebolt, doing the sharpest Loop-de-loop I had ever done, Wood passing the Quaffle to me at the end of it. I then twisted and bolted for the hoops. I swerved in between chasers and saw a blundger coming for me that one of their Beaters had hit towards me. Fred then came out of nowhere and hit it away from me, allowing me to score, bring us to 30-0 for Gryffindor. A small lead, but if Cho caught the Snitch, it would be all over. So safest thing would be to be 160 ahead of them, so even if Cho caught it we would still win. That was a tall order, but we tried our hardest.
Angelina had quickly stolen the Quaffle from the Ravenclaw chaser and shot at the Keeper, who intercepted it. I then rushed forward. The Keeper passed it to a chaser, who turned around and noticed me at the last second as I punched the Quaffle out of her hands, Angelina catching it and scoring. We flew past eachother and bumped arms, to roaring applause from the Gryffindor stands. 40-0. George proceeded to hit the Ravenclaw chaser who has the Quaffle and Katie then caught it. She then passed it to me to get past the other two chasers, and I passed it off to Angelina who scored again. I smirked. Perhaps we would get the lead. The game hadn't been going on 20 minutes and we were already 50 points ahead.
A Ravenclaw chaser got a lucky pass past Katie and sped for our goal posts, taking a shot, but Wood saved it. He then passed it to Angelina, who said "Shuffle time." I nodded and we fell into formation, performing a flawless Timberling Shuffle, getting the Quaffle to their end, I then broke off with the Quaffle and scored. I pumped my fist in the air. Katie then added a clean steal from the chaser as soon as he caught the quaffle and scored as well. The next Chaser who had the Quaffle I then flew up to and flipped upside down, getting underneath him and kicked the quaffle out of his hands, Katie catching it and making a clean pass to Angelina who closed the rest of the distance of the pitch and scored. I Grinned 80-0 for Gryffindor. The Ravenclaw Chasers had a quick chat with their Keeper before he passed it to one, who then began to make a compleicated play, passing off from chaser to chaser, no matter who we covered efficently they passed to the other. Finally they got past Wood and scored. Wood then passed to me, but I imediately got hit my a blundger, sending me falling sideways off my broom.
Luckily I grabbed on to one of the foot holds and held on for dear life, I then slowly was able to climb me way to the broom handle, where I swung myself back on to my broom. I then had to immediately duck as another blundger came hurtling towards my head. It appeared their play was to target the biggest threat and keep them busy dodging blundgers, so I began to zoom all over the pitch, avoiding blundgers., every time I got close to the Quaffle another would be hit towards me. This lead to Ravenclaw getting 20 more points. Finally I got a good intercept in and had the quaffle in my arm. I made for their goalpost, but in dodging a blundger I saw Harry diving for the snitch and 3 dementors heading towards him! So I tossed the Quaffle to Katie and did a hard 180, dodging the chasers who had been chasing after me. I then went full throttle towards Harry, I ripped my wand from my arm, ignoring the pain from the tape ripping the hair off my arm and pointed it at the dementors and yelled "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" trying to think of Hermione at the end of second year.. But nothing happened, the exchange from two nights before popping in my head. I then took a deep breath, and thought about how it would feel if Hermione forgave me, and even admitting she could not live without me and bellowed "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" A figure burst from my wand and charged the Dementors. I couldn't make it out in the Aderniline. The Dementors panicked and one even fell off its broom (as Harry had shot a a whispy patronus at it.) wait... broom?!
Harry caught the Snitch and landed on the ground. I landed as well, the game over.. We had won 230-30! We just needed to beat Slytherin and the cup was ours! Speaking of Slytherin, the 'Dementors' were actually Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle and Marcus Flint. I walked up to Harry and hugged him "Great job Mate!" He hugged back "You too! I saw some of those plays!" I grinned. Lupin even made his way over and said to both of us "Those were some patronuses" Harry exclaimed "The Dementors didn't effect me at all, I didn't hear anything!" Lupin and I looked at eachother "Yeah.. Well.. Uh.. They weren't dementors." Lupin said, I continued "Just Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle and the Slytherin Captain trying to sabotage the game." Lupin then continued "They weren't betting on you being able to defend yourself Harry.. And defiantly didn't expect David to charge them down and use a corporal Patronus! I'm proud of you both." He smiled proudly at both of us. We then overheard McGonagall giving the three detention and taking 50 points from Slytherin. I then pointed out "Didn't we lose 50 each for being out after dark back in first year? How did they only lose 50 points total?" Harry shrugged. Lupin then added "Oh and David.. I don't think you need to worry about anyone accusing you of not being brave or a true Gryffindor again." I looked up at him with a raised eyebrow "Why?" He chuckled "Because very few people have Lion Patronus's. I have personally only ever seen one other.. But perhaps the most famous person in history with a Lion Patronus was Godric Gryffindor himself. You, my young friend, have the same patronus as the founder of your house." I grinned. Now even Mafloy couldn't make the argument that I wasn't brave.. And boy was that a patronus to be proud of. Things were looking up for us. Gryffindor was in the finals for the Quidditch Cup, I finally never had to worry about hearing my fathers death every again, and my Patronus ended up being the symbol of bravery. Aside from my falling out with Hermione, things were looking up for the final few months of term!
