Lorelai was putting the finishing touches on the party prep for Hailey's first birthday. This was a big deal for Lorelai. Birthdays were always going to be a big thing for her. No Hailey would not remember this, but Lorelai would, and she wanted to make sure that there were enough pictures so when Hailey is older she would see that every birthday is special. Lorelai didn't want her to grow up thinking that her birthday was just another day the way Lorelai did till she came to this family.
Spencer grabbed the other end of a banner that Lorelai was putting up and helped her hang it. "You ready?" he asked
Lorelai smiled and nodded. "You sure we aren't missing anything."
Spencer went over and wrapped her in a hug. "I'm sure. Stop worrying about making it 'perfect' all that matters is she knows she is loved, and people want to be here to celebrate her. Not that she will even remember it." He pointed out.
She nodded and hugged him. "That reminds me I need to make sure the camera is charged. Lots of pictures so even if she doesn't remember she will have pictures."
"I will do that. You go get her ready." Spencer told her
Lorelai nodded and went and got Hailey up from her nap. "Okay, birthday girl. Time to get you dressed." She changed her and got her in a pink tutu and shirt that said. 'birthday girl' She was getting her dressed when she heard a knock on the door.
Spencer had gotten the door when someone knocked. And slowly everyone started to show up. Lorelai brought Hailey out when she was ready and handed her off to Becca. She was passed around slowly. Hailey was so use to so many people and she loved the attention.
The party got underway.
Emily came into the kitchen and saw Lorelai rubbing at her side. "You okay?" Emily asked
Lorelai jumped a bit. "Emily. Hi. Yes." she was pouring out drinks for people. "Here can you bring these to Derek and Penny please."
"I can. But you still hurting from the boxing the other day?" Emily asked
"Well, you kicked my ass so yes," Lorelai said
Emily chuckled. "You'll be back up to where you were and better very soon."
"Thanks." She said handing her the two glasses.
Emily took the two glasses and brought them to her two friends.
Lots of fun was had by all and lots of pictures were taken. The party started to die down eventually and most everyone left.
Lorelai picked up the cake-covered little girl and went to get her cleaned up. Aaron peaked into the bathroom where Lorelai was getting a bath ready.
"I hear Emily and you did some boxing the other day." He said
"Yup. Have to get myself back in shape." Lorelai said taking the outfit off Hailey and getting her into the bath.
Aaron nodded. "You're still sore though?" He asked
Lorelai sighed. "She kicked my ass. Yes. She always has."
"I heard about when you were in London visiting her you ladies went to play laser tag and more than once you won." He said
Lorelai smiled. "Okay. But at this point, I need to get back to where I was. And I'm getting there."
"Glad to hear it but you are okay? She is concerned she might have hurt you more than she realized." Aaron said
"I'm okay." She said
Aaron nodded "Okay."
Lorelai finished bathing Hailey and grabbed a towel and picked her up and wrapped her in it.
Aaron smiled at his granddaughter who babbled at him.
Lorelai smiled. "She loves you."
"And I love her. Just as much as I love her mom." Aaron said.
Lorelai smiled and headed to Hailey's room her dad followed.
"You ready to come back on Monday?" Aaron asked
"I wouldn't be coming back if I wasn't," Lorelai said.
"So. I assume since you haven't said otherwise you have turned down the other offer?" Aaron asked
Lorelai gave him a look and let out a small chuckle "Who told you?"
"The team lead. Felt it was necessary to let me know so as not to ruffle any feathers. That you had been offered it." Aaron said
"I'm sorry. I should have told you." Lorelai said
"Well. Yes, I would have liked to hear it from my daughter too." Aaron said
Lorelai nodded.
"But it's okay. I know if you were going to take it you would have told me." He said
"Yes. I would have. But the BAU is where I belong." Lorelai said
Aaron smiled and nodded.
She got the little girl dressed and ready for bed. "Can you say, grandpa?" She asked the little girl.
"She hasn't said her first word yet has she?" Aaron asked
"No. Not yet." Lorelai said
"Don't think it will be grandpa," Aaron said with a smile
Lorelai smiled. "You never know." She said picking Hailey up and handing her to Aaron.
"Take her out to the living room please, I will be there in a few minutes," Lorelai said
Aaron smiled and nodded taking Hailey out to the living room. Lorelai quickly cleaned up and joined her family out in the living room. It was just Aaron and Emily who had yet to leave.
Lorelai sat next to Spencer and watched her dad and Emily playing with Hailey.
"I hear you are still sore from the boxing?" Spencer said softly
"A little. I'm okay though." She said
"Can you look at me and tell me that?" Spencer asked
Lorelai sighed and looked up at him. "I'm okay."
"Okay. I'm sorry. Just wanted to be sure." Spencer said.
Lorelai smiled and nodded before looking back over at Emily and her dad. "And I will get her back." She said with a smirk.
"Oh really?" Emily said with a smirk. "Monday morning?"
"Monday morning. Before work." She said
"Sitter all ready?" Aaron asked
"Yes," Spencer said.
"She is as close to perfect as I think I will be able to find. Lots of experience clean record and background check and I made sure it was a deep background check." Lorelai said
"Oh really?" Aaron said with a smirk. "You did that on your own?"
"Of course," Lorelai said with a smirk. "After what happened with JJ and Will's sitter I'm not taking any chances.
Aaron nodded. "I get that."
"So -if I had help I will go to my grave with the name of said person," Lorelai said.
"You wouldn't need to tell me who I'm pretty sure I can guess," Aaron said.
"Pretty sure we can all guess," Emily said with a small chuckle.
"But I didn't have any help so no one's name to give," Lorelai said
Aaron shook his head. He knew she was lying. Even without a tell, he knew but he wasn't going to push it. He was just going to let it go. He knew his daughter needed to be sure that the person she trusted with her daughter was the right person.
Soon after the two of them left. Spencer put Hailey down for bed and Lorelai finished cleaning up from the party before taking a shower. Spencer came into the bathroom while she was getting out of the shower.
"Wow, that's a pretty bad bruise. Have you been icing it?" He asked
Lorelai looked up at him and nodded. "Yes. Promise." She wrapped a towel around herself
"She got you good there." He said
"Yes. She did. And she doesn't know how bad it is… And I'd rather she didn't. Because she felt bad enough as it was when it happened. It comes with the territory." Lorelai said
"Okay. That's fair." Spencer said. He went over and kissed her.
Lorelai smiled and went into the bedroom and got dressed.
Spencer finished up in the bathroom and came into the bedroom as well to Lorelai laying with an icepack on her side. He smiled "Thank you for taking care of yourself."
Lorelai smiled and nodded.
The both of them read for a bit before going to sleep for the night.
