Chapter 32: Go Unstoppable!
I.
Kim Possible was so in her element.
She had just flawlessly executed a triple flip to land atop the pyramid, the squad under her leadership managing to do on the fly a routine it had never before tried, before a raucous, packed stadium filled with 70,000 cheering fans. She was flashing a brilliant smile, not because of the cheerleaders' impressive performance but because of what was happening on the field.
Ron Stoppable, her Ron, was putting his mad running-away skills to impressive effect. When he'd first gone onto the field, the Llenrockers were having their lunch fed to them by their Go City opponents. Now, the visitors from New York were about to take the lead, all because of the tow-headed young man who'd been recruited off the sidelines. She was so ferociously proud of him.
On the field, Ron had one aim, well, two. One: to do Kim proud. Two: to not lose his pants. So far, much to his relief he was succeeding at both.
He was gathered in the huddle with the other players. The quarterback, a senior named Elton Tagg, but commonly called "Hash", looked around at his men.
"Okay, we actually have a chance to take the lead now. I'm going to throw a long one to Willitz, I want the rest of you to go out, too. Look like I may be passing—"
"Hash?"
"Yeah, Willitz?"
"Why don't you just give the ball to the new guy?"
Another player named Otis Motis III, chimed in. "Yeah, the skinny dude's got it going on. Why mess with success?"
Hash looked to his left and his right, his players all nodding. He sighed. "Because Coach says we're a team and, and oh, what the heck," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "You up for this, Stoppable?"
Ron grinned. Being the guy people relied upon was something he found he liked. "Yeah," he said with confidence. "Give me the ball. It's what, 65 yards? The Ronman has this in the can."
The quarterback arched an eyebrow. "I think you mean the bag. At least I hope you do."
Ron seemed surprised. "You sure it's a bag? I …"
"Look, you up for this?" he asked impatiently, an eye on the clock.
"Is Ron Stoppable up for this?" He noticed Hash glowering at him before he focused. "Uh, yeah."
"Great," Hash said with a grin. "But I'm still going to fake throwing it to Willitz. So be prepared to head out, then head back for the ball."
II.
The Barkin brothers watched the action for the sidelines.
Reeve was incredulous, then appalled. He watched as Ron caught the ball, then was chased by the Go City defensive line — back towards the Llenrock end zone. "What is he doing?" he asked, wanting to pull his hair, or even better, his brother's.
Steve allowed himself a knowing smile. "Winning the game for you."
Reeve looked at his twin like he was an idiot. Surely, Stoppable was about to cost Llenrock a safety. But then, just a yard from the goal line, Ron twisted, jumped over a defender, shimmied past another, and sprinted towards the opponent's end zone, the Go City players falling behind him. With surprising speed and the fans riotously cheering him, he bolted towards another touchdown.
Steve Barkin had seen this many times before. Stoppable may have looked like a scared, frantic, headless chicken out there but as much as his high school coach hated to admit it, the young man knew what he was doing. Even if he was a non-conformist punk.
III.
"That's the most incredible running I've ever seen!" the broadcaster yelled into his microphone. "From Llenrock's own 34 yard line, the new player has run a total of 144 yards on the play!"
"I've never seen anything like it," his companion in the broadcast booth crowed. "Towards the end zone, then back towards his own, then finally to Go City's for the score and somehow, through it all, he avoided being taken down."
"Well, it may not have been pretty, but the New Yorkers have scored yet again. Stoppable is indeed unstoppable!"
IV.
"Is that Ron?" Mr. Stoppable asked as he, his wife, and Ann Possible, tuned into the game, saw him chewing up the field, gaining yardage as he headed towards the Go City goal posts.
"Brudder!" Hana exclaimed happily as she jumped with joy in Fern's lap.
"How can he be playing for Llenrock?" Mrs. Stoppable asked. "He's going to Middleton Community."
"… And Stoppable has done it again! Touchdown!" cried the announcer.
"I can't think of when a transfer student has made such an immediate difference to a team!" his partner said.
"Transfer?!" Mr. and Mrs. Stoppable said in unison.
"When did Ronnie transfer?" Mr. Stoppable wondered.
"And why didn't he tell us?" Mrs. Stoppable added.
Ann arched an eyebrow and smiled. "I guess this is his way of telling you."
V.
"An acceptable performance, Stoppable," Reeve Barkin said as he approached his new running back, who was being embraced by his girlfriend.
"You rocked, Ron," Kim said, before giving him a peck on the cheek. "I'm so proud of you!"
"Thanks, KP," he replied and held her hand.
"Okay, that's enough kissy face," Reeve snapped as he looked on disapprovingly. "I don't know what kind of country club my brother ran back in Middleton, but I run a tight ship. Get in the locker room. Now."
The two teens looked at one another, then reluctantly pulled apart. "See you in a bit, Kim," he said. "Where do you want to meet?"
"Llenrock," Barkin snapped.
"Huh?" Kim and Ron said, with Kim just getting in the jinx in time for a soda.
"The football team travels on the bus. No exceptions."
"But what about my car? How am I supposed to get it back to campus?"
"That's your problem, not mine," Barkin growled.
Kim looked sympathetically at her boyfriend. "Don't worry, I can drive back to campus." She squeezed his hand and gave him a very demonstrative kiss. "I love you, Ron."
He blushed as he beamed. Then his pants fell down. At least he'd managed to meet one of his two goals for the day …
VI.
Kim Possible was kind-hearted, sweet, generous and mindful of others. So when Reeve asked his brother Steve if he wanted to head back to campus with the team and she saw the look of panic on her BF's face, she suggested she would prefer not travelling alone back to school (which wasn't at all true, since she would now not be able to test all of the tweeb-inspired features on Ron's car). She vainly hoped the coach would relent and let Ron go with her, but no such luck. And so, she found herself cruising down the highway with a gently snoring Steve Barkin by her side, wondering how the man managed to do so at attention …
VII.
Ron was looking about the bus. How was it that on a huge motor coach, he managed to be stuck next to Reeve Barkin? At least he was gently snoring, though Ron found it a bit odd that his new coach had managed to fall asleep at attention.
He was pleased he'd been able to help out with the game. The guys seemed nice enough, and even seemed to like him. But now as he reflected further on the day, he began to grow nervous. Middleton Community had been a challenge and now he was going to have to keep up with the students and classes at Llenrock. He knew that Kim said she'd help, and her word was good, but he saw how much fun she had on the sidelines and he didn't want to cut into her time for her extracurricular activities. He liked being to kiss without a chaperone, but growing up tanked sometimes. Further, there was the matter of how was she supposed to help when he didn't even know what he'd be taking!
As Ron's anxieties began to mount Reeve Barkin woke up. Freakily, as if reading Ron's mind, he had somehow managed to get a course catalog. He dropped the thick book in the young man's lap. "Four classes plus freshman seminar, which you'll be taking with me. Pick 'em now, be ready for class on Monday."
Ron looked at the man, and felt like he should salute. Instead, he gulped. "Yes sir."
VIII.
Troy Bell sat in the holding cell, biding his time before he was released into his attorney's custody. He couldn't believe what had happened. Not only had he been kicked off the team, he'd been arrested. Part of him wanted to blame Tim Morrell. He was taking the fall for the grad student. But another part of him blamed Kim Possible, who had the nerve to reject him, and that moron Ron Stoppable, who was now the starting running back. They were going to pay and big time.
