A/N: Hey there!
When I decided to continue this story after the first chapter, I was going to finish it in chapter 3... But then I wanted to explore some situations from Season 6 with darvey as a couple and that's what these last two chapters will be all about. For this reason, there are some dialogues that are from the show.
Thank you very much for reading and I hope you enjoy it :)
Upon hearing that Jessica is leaving the firm, Donna's first reaction, her most instinctive reaction, is to protect Harvey. He's just been through too much, starting with Liberty Rial, saving her from going to jail, a failed confession of love, and her going to Louis's desk for a while, followed by his panic attacks, his therapy, and the danger of Mike going to jail. And as if that weren't enough, then an even worse whirlwind began. Mike's trial was exhausting, and she knows it because it was exhausting for her as well. And she tried to do everything she could, everything, but when Harvey told her he wanted to turn himself in, she just couldn't go against her instinct: to protect him one more time, to save him from himself.
If she thinks about it now, what she did was crazy, because kissing Harvey out of the blue, could have sent him thousands of miles away from her, but luckily things turned out better than she thought. And Donna knows that hope for a future together is what kept Harvey afloat through the worst of times. After all, that hope kept her afloat as well.
And now, after a tornado completely destroyed them, when it seemed like they were getting back on their feet, this news from Jessica shocks her. First, because she didn't see it coming. Second, she fears how Harvey might react to this. It's true that now she's as close to him as she always wanted, to be able to take care of him closely, but it's also true that many times the handling of his emotions seems like that of a child. And that worries her.
She can't bear to see Harvey fall over again. She can't, nor does she want that to happen.
"Thank you, but it's not my firm anymore. It's yours." Jessica says, knowing that she's about to throw a bomb toward them.
"What do you mean, "ours"?" Harvey asks, confused.
"I mean, I've decided to step down."
"What?" Louis reacts immediately.
"Jessica–"
"Listen, somewhere along the way, I forgot why I became a lawyer in the first place. And it wasn't just to fight for money and power. It was to fight for something more."
"Bullshit, you're not fighting for something more, you're running away," Louis yells.
"Louis!"
"No, we bust our asses to save this goddamn place, she decides to up and leave? We committed to this."
"Louis! She isn't doing this to you. She's doing it for herself."
And it's then when she gets into the office. She can see the effort Harvey is making to understand Jessica's decision and decides to help him out with Louis. Harvey doesn't look at her, but she knows he knows she just walked in. She can notice it in how his shoulders are slightly relieved.
"I don't give a shit why she's doing it, it's selfish and self-serving, and it's not gonna happen." Louis still attacks Jessica.
"Do you think I want to goddamn do this, Louis? I have to do this."
"You can't just throw this all away after we gave everything to save it."
"That's enough." Donna decides to intervene. "Louis, after the partners left, we swore we were gonna dedicate every ounce of blood, sweat, and tears we had to this place. But we didn't." She continues speaking and walks towards them. "Harvey and I focused on getting Mike out, Jessica and Rachel focused on Leonard Bailey, and you focused on finding love in your life."
"That's not true." Louis is still trying to convince himself.
"Yes, it is," Donna replies.
"I'm not ready to give up the firm," Louis says.
"No one's saying you have to give up the firm, Louis. You just have to let me go."
"You sure about this?" Harvey talks again.
"Tell you the truth, for the first time in my life, I'm not sure about anything, and it scares the shit out of me. But I'm sure I have to do this."
"To Pearson Specter Litt," Harvey says, raising his glass.
"To Pearson Specter Litt." Jessica and Louis say, as also raise their glasses.
Harvey drinks a sip and for the first time, looks for Donna with his eyes, and seeing her there, gives him the confidence boost he needs to know that, whatever it may be, he will be able with this. He offers the glass to her, which she grabs without hesitation and toasts with Jessica, and then she also drinks a sip.
There is a momentary silence in the office, Donna returns the glass to Harvey, who drinks a little more and leaves it aside. Almost instinctively, and definitely, without thinking, he takes Donna's hand and squeezes it gently, unconsciously searching for his safe place. Donna receives him lovingly and caresses his hand with her thumb, turning to look at him. It's not very hard for them to realize that Jessica and Louis are watching them pretty surprised.
"Can I say it?" Harvey mutters to Donna, looking at her.
She offers him a calm smile. "Of course, you can." She also murmurs, taking his hand between hers two.
Harvey smiles with relief and turns his head to look back at Jessica and Louis, who can already guess what is about to happen. "It turns out that..." he takes a bite of air. "Donna and I are together." He says and this time he turns his head again, to look at her as he says it. He can't miss that smile. In fact, he can't resist giving her a kiss on her cheek, which Louis celebrates like a child. Just Louis being Louis.
"Oh, my God!" Louis says, shocked.
"It's finally time, huh?" Jessica says with a slightly funnier tone and makes them laugh.
"Finally," Donna says with a smile, and Harvey releases from her hands and hugs her by her shoulders, pushing her closer to him.
"I'm really glad for you, guys," Louis says, raising his glass toward them and he drinks another sip.
"Me too," Jessica adds and does the same as Louis did.
Donna and Harvey thank them and after some jokes about how long it took Harvey to take off his head from his own butt, they sit on the couch, to analyze the steps to follow. Donna stays, despite not being a name partner, because everyone knows that if it weren't for her, everything would have fallen apart a long time ago.
Harvey and Donna sit next to each other, and although they are still getting used to physical closeness being allowed, they both know that it can no longer be otherwise.
When they are about to get out of there, Donna goes to the bathroom for a moment and Jessica approaches Harvey.
"My work here is officially done," Jessica tells Harvey, squeezing him on his arm.
"Why?" he asks.
"Harvey…" she clears her throat. "Remember what you told me when you came here after the D.A. office?" he frowns. "This is not about the associate, it's about the secretary. And I'm not coming here without her." She tells him, imitating Harvey's voice.
He smiles. "And you said that she must be really special."
Jessica smiles back. "And you answered she was. And since then, I was waiting for this news."
He giggles. "Thank you, Jessica. Not just for this."
"You don't have to, Harvey." She winks at him and goes away, leaving him alone in the middle of the 50th floor. Well, he thinks he's alone because actually Donna is tucked aside to the side and just overheard the entire conversation.
His feet take him to his office, looking to put the thoughts in his head in order, and as always, observing the city through his window helps him in this process. Donna knows that giving him a few minutes with himself is the right decision, so she stays for a few moments in the hallway, then enters the office.
"You are gonna be okay?" she asks softly, walking toward him.
"She was my mentor." He says, his voice sounding really low. "But yeah, I'm gonna be okay."
"You want to be alone?" she asks because although she feels that her whole body asks her to stay with him, she is still afraid of invading him.
He gently shakes his head, drawing a shy smile on his lips. "No." Donna walks slowly toward him, until she stands by his side, also looking at the window and their hands naturally join together, fitting effortlessly. "I was alone for a long time now." He says, his voice coming out as a whisper drowned from his throat.
"I'm here now." She murmurs, stroking his hand with her thumb as she drops her head on his shoulder.
"I know." He responds and turns his face to sweetly kiss her forehead.
The two sigh at once and let their gazes get lost in the incredible view of New York at night that Harvey's office offers.
There are several minutes spent there until Donna raises her head when she begins to feel discomfort in her neck and stays watching Harvey's profile. "So, you told Jessica that I was special, huh?"
He smirks. "The image of your body covered in whipped cream and strawberries was still too fresh in my mind."
She rolls her eyes, holding her urge to laugh, and squeezes really hard his hand. "Harvey!" she complains, which makes Harvey laugh.
Harvey lets go of her hand and wraps her waist with his arms to face her. "Donna..." he says, getting serious again. "You were always special to me." Donna smiles, blushing a little, putting her hands in his arms. "I thought you knew." He murmurs, raising one of his hands to her face, to gently grab her by her jaw.
She shrugs. "Assuming it is not the same as knowing, and it's nice to hear it."
Harvey leans slightly towards her, brushing their noses. "I love you, Donna."
She smirks against her lips, arching her body a little to get closer to him. "I love you, Harvey." She whispers and slightly opens her lips, letting him kiss her sweetly, while her hands cling to his arms and he tangles his fingers in her hair. It's far from being a passionate horny kiss. It's a sweet, tender, soft one that shakes them from head to toe and accelerates their hearts as if they were two teenagers. "Not bad for the first kiss here, huh?" she whispers, with her lips swollen and her eyes on Harvey's lips.
He chuckles and pushes her even more against him. "Let me check it." He mutters and kisses her again, moaning softly in her mouth, when he feels the taste of her tongue tangled with his. "Yeah, you're right." He says and makes her giggle.
"But what?" she asks, pulling one of her hands up his face until she stroked his brow with her thumb.
"Nothing,"
"Harvey, I know you. You have something more on your mind right now."
He exhales sharply. "You and your Donna shit."
She giggles. "Do you wanna tell me?"
He nods, closing his eyes for a moment. "I just regret some things."
"What things?"
Harvey releases her and leans against the under-window. She imitates him. "I lied to you, and this was wrong. I was paying for your salary since we came here."
"Harvey… I knew that. You were the only associate with a secretary."
"Donna… I don't mean at that moment."
She sighs. "I know."
"I shouldn't have lied to you. I have always told myself that I paid part of your salary because you are worth more than what this firm pays to secretaries, and while it's something I believe... I also did it because I was afraid that you would abandon me." He confesses, looking at the ground.
"Harvey…" she murmurs and puts her hand on his knee. "First of all, I was never working for you for the money. If all this time I've worked for you, with everything we've been through, it's because I couldn't really get away from you. Look, I've tried and I'm done here again." He chuckles and puts his hand over hers. "Second, it's right you weren't well lying to me. But I've already forgotten you for that. You don't have to worry about it now." She says and turns her torso a little so she can look at him, interlocking her fingers with his. "And third, and most importantly... " she murmurs. "Please, can you look at me?" he nods and does. "Harvey, you're worthy of having people around you who love you and are loyal to you for who you are, and not for your money." She says softly and raises their hands together to kiss his knuckles. "I have never, ever been near you for your money. And I know many people who love you don't either. You're so much, so much more than your bank account. Okay?" she says, putting love in every word because he needs him never to feel that way again. "I know it was the way you found, that you thought it could work to keep me close... And I also know that it was your way of showing me you wanted me close." He nods, teary-eyed. "But Harvey... It was never about money for me."
Harvey has words stuck in his throat, unable to release them. Donna and that ability she has to see what happens to him, even deeper than he dares, making him feel on quicksand. Therapy is indeed removing a lot of things inside him, but the fact that she's telling him this just strikes him differently. He knows she says it to him from love, because she wants him to be well, calm, and happy, honestly, not because she has an obligation to tell him because it's her job.
Donna waits for him, waits for his words for as long as it takes, with her gaze holding his.
"Donna–" he murmurs and clears his throat.
"It's okay." She whispers and gives him a brief but heartfelt kiss.
"I wouldn't have gotten this far if it weren't for you. And I'm not talking about my career as a lawyer." He pauses and she nods. "I'm a long way off to be fine. I know I'm a disaster in many ways, but Donna... You know how broken I am. And after so many years of being so broken, I just thought I didn't deserve to heal, and you have shown me that I did. And if I'm trying now, it's because you never lost faith in me."
She smirks and caresses his cheek with his fingers. "You deserve it, Harvey. I promise." She responds softly, cutting the distance between them, to kiss him again.
"Thank you, Donna."
She smiles against his lips. "Always, Harvey." She responds and Harvey kisses her again, but this time they don't separate until their lungs need it.
"So… I just have one question."
"Ask me,"
"Don't you want a raise?"
Donna laughs. "No, but I want something else."
"Anything."
"Sex tonight."
He smiles mischievously. "I really like the way you think."
"Oh, I already know that." She responds against his lips and kisses him again.
Before leaving the office, Donna and Harvey have one more drink and go to Harvey's condo where they will spend the night.
Waking up to find Donna's tangled red hair on his bed still amazes him every morning. And he still smiles like a fool at the image, feeling the need to wrap his arm around her and bring her closer to him, to be invaded by the aroma and the heat that her body gives off, almost always naked when he wakes up.
"Hmm..." she purrs, looking for a more comfortable position on top of him.
"Morning," he murmurs and kisses her hair.
"Morning," she babbles.
"You can sleep for a while yet."
"Good." She responds and falls asleep again instantly, which makes Harvey giggle.
And although Harvey believed he wouldn't go back to sleep, Donna's calm breathing helps him relax again and they both sleep until the alarm wakes them up.
"Morning again," she exhales, still in his arms.
He smirks against her forehead. "Good morning." He says and yawns.
"Did you sleep well?" she asks, lifting herself up a bit on her elbows, letting Harvey for the first time get a glimpse of her squint eyes and her puffy face from sleep, something he finds especially adorable.
"Yes, I've woken up a few times, but it relaxes me that you're here." He responds, running his fingertips down the hollow of her spine.
She smiles at him and places a kiss on his chest. "I'll make coffee. I guess you'll need energy today."
"Just coffee?" He pouts. "You know there are other things that give me energy," he suggests, reaching the curve of her butt with his fingers.
"Harvey," she purrs. "That drains your energy."
"Not if you go on top."
She laughs and rolls her eyes. "As I said, I'll go make coffee."
"Will I have to wait until tonight?"
"A good incentive to get you through the day, don't you think?" she asks, as she reaches for Harvey's shirt that's been left on the floor, to start putting it on as she gets to her feet.
"What you're doing is so cruel that I could sue you."
She shrugs, buttoning up the shirt. "If you want to put me against the dais, I won't refuse." She tells him slyly, looking over her shoulder at him as she leaves the room.
Harvey slumps back against the pillows again, giving in and accepting that he will have to wait until evening for another intimate dose of his favorite redhead.
The minutes begin to tick by, and though he hears noises in the kitchen, she still hasn't come back.
"Hey, if it's gonna be much longer, I could just get some on the way."
"Hold your horses, mister," Donna tells him, walking into the room, a cup of coffee in each hand. The mere sight of her makes Harvey smile again, his gaze following her path until she offers him one mug and sits on the edge of the bed as he tastes the coffee. Donna waits expectantly for his verdict.
"That was the best cup of coffee I've ever had." He says sincerely, but just not for the coffee.
"I told you it was worth the wait." She answers smoothly, not just referring to the coffee, either.
Harvey puts the mug down on the nightstand, gently brushes her hair, and lovingly holds her to the side of her face, then he slowly moves closer to her, to gently kisses her lips.
"That was nice." She whispers, looking at his lips.
"It was. And as much as I'd like to spend all day doing it, we should get going."
"You? The same one who was asking for morning sex five minutes ago?" she laughs and makes him laugh too.
"Since you've refused… The earlier we go to the firm, the sooner we can come back and have sex."
"So… It's all related to having sex with me." She says, exaggerating her words with a wave of her hands.
"Exactly."
"Well..." she stands up. "I like that everything you do is thinking of me in any way."
"I think of you every second, Donna."
She smiles at him fondly. "The same thing happens to us then." She answers and turns to leave the room.
Harvey watches her go and calls out to her just before she comes down the step. "Just promise me one thing." He says as she turns to look at him.
"What?"
"Tonight you will enter my room wearing my shirt again."
She bites her lower lip while raising her eyebrow, teasing him. "Deal." She answers, winks at him, and leaves.
"God, you will kill me." He growls under his breath and Donna laughs at him.
Maybe I wrote this whole chapter just to make Harvey's dream come true? Yes, probably x)
I'd love to know what you think about this and I see you in the last chapter!
