The evening of the engagement party had been perfect, they had danced together all night and everyone they loved had been there to celebrate their hapiness with them. It was almost cruel how unaware they were that in a matter of days things would change between them forever.
The afternoon the letter had arrived Charlie and Arabelle were out for the evening. If everyone else had known how much trouble it would cause maybe someone would have hidden it or burnt it, but another one would have showed up the next day, and the next until Charlie had opened it. It seemed funny how a piece of paper was all it took to change the course of the couple's future.
They had been driven out the house to diagon alley that afternoon after Arabelle kept arguing with Molly over wedding plans. Arabelle had specifically asked to have a small ceremony of family and friends whoever Molly kept adding people to the list.
"But Molly I don't even know who this April Hamilton is!". Arabelle complained squinting to read the names on the ever growing invitations list.
"Arabelle, April was an old friend of your mother's from school and she would have wanted her there." Molly argued slamming the wooden spoon on the kitchen counter.
Charlie was sitting at the table rubbing his eyes, they'd been at it for days, bickering since he had asked Arabelle to marry him, they had already agreed that the wedding wouldn't be until at least next year and while neither of them were in a particular rush to plan Molly was taking over full steam ahead. The other night she had been sketching out a seating plan! He had to agree with Arabelle on this, it was getting a bit ridiculous.
"But I don't want her there! I don't know who she is." Arabelle cried.
"Well it's my son's wedding day as well as yours and I would like to share this day with people too you know young lady. Charlie will you tell her." Molly snapped.
Charlie looked up suddenly aware that he was in the middle of two very angry women, a dangerous place to be at the best of times.
"Yes Charlie why don't you tell me that it's selfish of me to ask Molly to stop adding people from the list when it's already gone from 25 up to 64 in the last 49 hours!" Arabelle snapped back. "Well?" She said giving him the same dark look Molly was giving him to his left.
"I'm going out." He said. "Arabelle come on, you need to cool off and mum we will finish this discussion under calmer circumstances later."
They used the floo network to get to Diagon Alley, Charlie had to listen to Arabelle complain about how unreasonable Molly was being for at least another twenty minutes before she calmed down but as the day went on they laughed and taked all afternoon about plans for traveling, about how Ron would do in his first year of school, of where they would end up living together, how Ginny would be on her own for the time this year, and soon the shops began closing their doors and their afternoon together came to an end.
When they returned to the burrow the air was heavy with humidity and the hum of the crickets filled their ears. Everyone was in the garden setting up for dinner as it was Bill's last evening before leaving for Egypt. Arabelle walked up to the chair Molly was sitting in folding napkins, and wrapped her arms around her, kissing her head. Molly smiled and squeezed her arms. No words were needed to apologise, they had forgiven each other already.
"Hey Charlie" Fred called from the other side of the garden. "Fancy a game of quidditch? Dads going to play and we need to even out the sides"
"Sure I'm game" he said jogging over to them as an argument broke out with Ginny and Bill about how he always put her as the goalkeeper.
Arabelle and Molly watched from the table while they played, chatting and gossiping as if their disagreement this morning had never happened and they wouldn't dream of having the exact same argument the following morning. There was a calmness dusted over everything as the day came to a close. Everyone helped Molly bring the food and plates out to the large garden table and extra lanterns were lit and hung to the trees.
"Oh Charlie, I forgot this letter arrived for you while you were out earlier" Molly said pulling and envelope out of her apron pocket and passing it over to him as they sat down. He tore it open and read the letter quickly, his ears going pink as he read, trying to conceal a smile. Arabelle looked at him puzzled from the other side of the table but he just shook his head and scrunched the letter into his back pocket mouthing that he would tell her later. But he was strangely quiet for the rest of the meal, looking deep in thought.
When Arabelle got up to go the kitchen to make a pot of tea to bring out to everyone he took the opportunity to follow her into the house.
"Arabelle I need to talk to you quickly" he said walking through the back door.
She turned around smiling at him as she placed the kettle on the stove. "Please tell me that letter was from your great aunt Tessie saying she won't be able to make it to the wedding next year, I swear if she comes she'll try to set my dress alight! You know she's got it in for me" she Laughed.
"Haha no unfortunately it's not, but it is good news, about a job" he said shifting awkwardly on his feet.
Her smiled faltered for a second as she sensed his nerves, but she covered it up quickly. "Oh that's so weird, I have something to tell you too about a job, I was going to tell you tonight but anyway, sorry you go first" she gushed, his nervousness making her nervous too.
"Okay, uhh well" he paused thinking about how to word it. The kettle was making a low whistling that was distracting him. "Its uhh, from this Dragon sanctuary that I applied to months ago, they've uhh offered me a job." He said smiling slightly.
"Charlie! That's amazing! Well done I'm so happy for you!" She ran and hugged him tightly, kissing his cheek. "The way you were acting made me thing it was something bad" she laughed. The kettle whistling louder now. "Why were you nervous to tell me that?"
"It's just that uhh, well the jobs in Romania." He said quickly.
Arabelle's smile vanished and she stepped away from him, the kettle now screeching louder than before. "Oh." Was all she managed to say. "I mean no, that's good, you're going to take it right?"
"I think so, I mean this is like my dream job, but you know there's jobs at the sanctuary for you too, healers are always going to be needed in a place like that." He said shifting his feet again. "And we can always go traveling during our breaks off from work together."
"Yeah" she said quietly her expression growing sadder by the minute. Charlie began to panic, what if he couldn't convince her to come with him. He had to take this job he'd been dreaming about it since he was a kid, the chance to work with dragons! But could he really leave Arabelle behind? She was his whole life. They had sworn to be together forever.
"And the wedding" he continued, "we can come back next summer and get married here, that wouldn't have to change."
"I don't care about the wedding Charlie..." Arabelle started but Charlie cut her off.
"And there's a great community out there it's like a little village they all live together there with their partners and kids, I know you'd like it, I looked it all up last year when I applied"
"Charlie.."
"And we can come home every holiday to see the kids, so you would see them as much as you would here anyway" but from the look on her face he could tell he was losing this battle, the kettle kept screeching and his heart felt heavy.
"Charlie. Just stop. Look, I've been offered a job at Hogwarts to train with Madame Pomfrey, and you know she's one of the best in the industry. I can't move to Romania with you Charlie, I can't give up this opportunity" her voice was harsh and he knew from experience there was no convincing her otherwise now, she had made up her mind.
"I can't give up this opportunity either Belle, please don't make me choose" his voice starting to shake as the reality of what was happening hit him the screeching of the kettle made him feel as if his head would explode. Tears began to fill Arabelle's eyes and her hands were shaking.
"I have to Charlie, I can't go, you've got to chose. I've already made my decision." She turned away to yank the kettle off the stove and wipe the tears off her cheeks, the mugs on the tray began to clatter together as the room began shaking. Arabelle was losing control of her feelings. She knew his answer but she wasn't ready for it.
"If I don't leave now I never will. I won't get another chance like this again Arabelle." His eyes were welling up too now as he watched the girl he swore to protect have her heart broken. Because of him. The teapot the water had been poured into smashed into a thousand tiny pieces at the same time her heart did and scalding hot water covered her burning deep into her skin.
Arabelle lost control.
