The burns from the water scarred her skin, leaving small marks that would never fully go away. To others they weren't visible unless pointed out, but she knew they were there. A constant reminder of the day Charlie left her.
There was a lot of yelling that night, everyone ran towards the kitchen when they heard the teapot smash. They were greeted at the door with Arabelle's anger. Ginny had made a run for the stairs just at the point everything began flying around the room and got trapped in the corner as the fire poker flew close dangerously close past her head.
Bill had made a run for Arabelle, hoping to knock her down to stop her before she really hurt Charlie but he was to slow. Her anger was protruding out from her like a force field that he couldn't pass through, the magic of it was too strong.
The twins began to tiptoe backs to the wall towards where Ginny was crouched while Percy and Ron were pulled quickly behind Mr and Mrs weasley before they made a run like Ginny had.
Arthur in a panic tried shooting a stunning spell towards Arabelle. He missed but the shock had made her turn her attention away and Bill took the split second chance to pounce on her bringing her down to the tile floor hard as if she were a dangerous wild animal. She whispered in pain but Bill didn't let go.
"Arabelle I'm so sorry, I'm not doing this to hurt you" Charlie said choking back tears. He had seen her get angry before but never as bad as that, and never ever because of him.
"I will never forgive you Charlie. You swore we'd be together forever" she cried, her voice muffled by Bill's shoulder. He was holding her in a tight hug on the floor now, but he didn't let go for fear of her anger returning.
"I don't want to live with out you Arabelle but you're giving me no choice."
"You have a choice Charlie. You asked me to marry you, to be with you forever. It's you that's taking that away from us. Not me." She spat at him resentment rising in her voice again.
"Please Arabelle, just come with me, there are jobs out there that are prefect for you, I know you'd be happy" tears were running down his cheeks now. No one in the family had seen Charlie cry before apart from Molly. Everyone knew this was serious. This was the end. Both wanted their careers so badly they wouldn't give up.
"NO!" She screamed again. Bill's grip became vice like around her back. "Why should I give up everything I've worked so hard for just so you can run off to Romania and live your dream life. You can't get everything Charlie. That's not fair." She couldn't hold back her sobs any longer. Bill's closeness was making it hard to breathe as she gasped for air. "Just leave if you want to leave Charlie. Don't wait for me, I won't be there."
Bill looked at his brother sympathetically, before he lifted Arabelle to her feet still sobbing loudly and half carried, half dragged her out the back door like a large broken China doll. Molly ran over to Charlie and pulled him into a hug, as he collapsed into her arms. She didn't agree with him going to work with dragons in Romania but now was definitely not the time to bring that up.
The twins used to fight a lot when they were younger. Whenever they did Charlie and Arabelle would separate them until they calmed down. As they had so many times before for them, the twins knew they had to do the same thing for Charlie and Arabelle. George felt a pull automatically to where Arabelle was outside, he had always been closer to her than Fred. Fred meanwhile scooped up Ginny and walked over to Charlie.
Bill and Arabelle were sitting on the steps of the garden porch. Her head in her hands still sobbing. George sat down on her other side, and rubbed her back to let her know he was there for her.
It took a while for her to stop crying, and even then they just sat in silence together, knowing there was nothing they could say to make it better. Even Bill was lost for words. Later on Molly brought out four mugs of tea on a tray, passed them out and sat down next to Bill resting her head wearily on his shoulder as he put his arm around her. As Arabelle looked over she realised how Molly must be feeling, having another son chose to live abroad far away from her.
Molly sighed "it will be okay sweetheart" she said. "Everything will work out one way or another." Arabelle felt her throat tighten and didn't trust her voice to speak, she just looked down at her mug of tea.
"Do you think he'll go mum?" George spoke for the first time.
"Yes dear, I think he probably will" she whispered.
George threw his arm around Arabelle cheerfully as her eyes began to sting, "don't worry Arabelle we found out about your job at Hogwarts. Fred and I will send so many people to the hospital wing you won't have time to even remember who stupid old Charlie is" he laughed making her smile just for a second.
"George if you two dare..." Molly started.
"Mum I'm joking! Just trying to make light of the situation" he laughed. "But seriously" he whispered so only Arabelle could hear "if you want us to we're more than capable".
She wrapped her arms around him tightly, she wondered if the twins would be upset that they were breaking up, but she was glad she would have them around if she took the Hogwarts job. She had missed them being around so much since she had left school.
It was late when George and Molly went inside. But Arabelle wasn't ready to go in yet, so Bill stayed with her partly out of loyalty and partly because he didn't trust her to be alone. They sat there for another hour at least, until the house grew quiet and they were left alone with the hum of the crickets. The dinner table was left untouched. It would be tidied in the morning but for now everyone was in bed hoping that the morning would bring a change of heart for Charlie or Arabelle. She knew it wouldn't though. She stood up when she was sure she had left it long enough for everyone to fall asleep.
"Hey" Bill said grabbing her arm and speaking to her for the first time since he had carried her outside. "If he leaves without you, then he's an idiot." He said and pulled her into a tight hug. She hugged him back, if she had any tears left to cry she would have cried at that moment but she didn't, so they just stood there hugging in the darkness.
When they walked in Charlie was asleep on the sofa. Seeing him again made her heart fall into her stomach but she pushed her feelings aside and walked past him up the stairs without looking back. Their room was cold and empty when she walked in, the air was chilled as if there once was a warm presence that was no longer there. She crawled under the duvet not bothering to take off her clothes and kicked her shoes to the ground, not caring if the noise woke Charlie up. She fell asleep quickly as her eyes were heavy but her sleep was disrupted every hour by different dreams, some were nightmares and some were just so vivid they made her feel sick. Her brain was struggling to tell the difference of reality anymore.
In the morning when she woke to finally find sunlight in the room she sat up quickly in shock. The bed was empty, that was no surprise. But someone had been in there for sure. She could sense it and for one thing the wardrobe door was open a crack. She threw off the duvet and ran for the doors, knowing what she would find but dreading it all the same. A cold sweat came over her despite the suffiness of the room. She yanked the doors open and felt bile rise up in her throat. Her clothes hung there perfectly in order. But only her clothes. Charlie's were gone. She pushed them shut trying to block out the memories of last night sweeping through her brain.
"You're nothing to me now anyway, so just go."
It was real, it had happened. She had said it and he had done it. He was gone. She flung open draws and pulled the room to pieces but she could find no traice that he even existed. She really had woken up to find that it was a dream. Even the photo frames that had been on her dressing table of them were gone. She pulled open the door and heard voices in the kitchen, maybe he hadn't left. Maybe it wasn't too late to get him back, say how sorry she was, beg him not to leave her. Surely he wouldn't leave without saying goodbye. She flew down the stairs and paused just before reaching the kitchen. Everyone was awake, she could hear Ginny sniffing.
"Mum I told you, I swear i had no idea he would do this." Bill cried out.
Arabelle tip toed down a few more steps.
"Well it's just unthinkable, I can't believe it" Molly cried out her temper unsurprisingly, was not good this morning.
"Well" Arthur said, Arabelle heard the clink of a knife and fork. The smells of the cooked breakfast downstairs was making her feel like she would vomit. "I really thought he was better than this."
She climbed down a few more steps so she was visible but no one had heard her enter yet, she didn't know what time it was but everyone was still in their pyjamas so it must be early.
"He didn't even bother to leave a note, I mean it's one thing to not say goodbye to us, but that poor girl, she's heart broken and how is she going to feel when she wakes up to find he's abandoned her with not even a goodbye!" She turned and gestured towards the stairs, to see Arabelle standing there, the same scruffy clothes from last night on, hair a mess and so pale Molly was sure she would pass out.
Everyone turned to look at her. She had never felt so humiliated in all her life. He had abandoned her, Molly was right and here she was looking like an emotional train wreck, when clearly Charlie hadn't thought twice about leaving home to go live his dream. She felt like one of his old abandoned toys that he had thrown out the moment something better had come along. She wanted to lie down and die right there on the stairs.
"So" she said her voice dry and cracking from emotion "I guess he's really gone then."
