A/N: So this is my very first Star Trek fic. I've been hyperfixating on it lately and felt the urge to write so... Here's my rendition of a McCoy/OC fic. Hope it's decent.
Chapter One: A Fresh Start
Lieutenant Marinette LeBeau placed the last few items into her bag and walked out of her quarters on the USS Odyssey for the last time. She looked behind her, knowing the USS Enterprise probably had the exact same quarters waiting for her, but this had been her home for the past year. She knew she would miss this ship, but she hoped the Enterprise would become her new home.
She walked down the hall and to the transporter room and waved at Johnny, the man behind the controls.
"Good luck over there." Johnny wished her with a small smile.
"Thank you. Don't have too much fun."
She stepped onto the transporter pad, clutching her bag tightly against her body. She prepared herself for the transfer and took a deep breath.
"Energize."
She felt the familiar feeling of herself being transported and made sure to stay perfectly still. She had seen too many transporter accidents and didn't want to be another statistic.
"Aye. There she is, Captain."
She looked around and saw three men in the room with her. The one in yellow she assumed was the Captain, given that he was in command yellow. The one in blue was easily recognizable as Commander Spock and she didn't know the one in red. She stepped down from the transporter pad, throwing her bag over her shoulder.
"Welcome aboard the USS Enterprise, lassie."
"Thank you."
The Captain held out his hand, "I'm Captain James T. Kirk. Glad to have you aboard."
"Thank you, sir. I'm grateful for this opportunity." Marinette responded, shaking the man's hand.
She held her hand up in the customary Vulcan greeting and nodded at Spock who returned the gesture. She was very glad to see a familiar face here and hoped it made the transfer that much easier on her.
"Commander Spock will lead you to your quarters and once you've settled in, go to medbay and get your physical and whatever else Bones deems necessary."
"Will do, Captain."
She followed Spock out of the room and down the hall before he finally spoke in Vulcan no less, "Nice to see you again, Marinette."
"Same to you, Spock. I'm happy to see a familiar face. I was worried the transfer here would be complicated." She responded in perfect Vulcan.
"I am certain you will find yourself home here. Most people do."
"Yourself included?"
"I am comfortable."
"That didn't answer my question."
Spock made the slightest of smiles that she would have missed had she not been looking at him, "No wonder Mother likes you." He switched to English, "Here are your quarters. Medbay is on the floor below. I'm sure you'll have no problem finding it."
"I've been told to listen for yelling."
"A reasonable assumption."
"Thank you, Spock."
"You're welcome, Lieutenant."
Marinette rolled her eyes at the use of her title instead of her name and walked inside. She had been friends with Spock for years and were well beyond addressing each other by their titles. She looked around her new quarters and as she suspected, they were just the same as the old ship. She dropped her bag on the table and opened it up, taking out the framed photo of her family.
Marinette turned towards the bed, setting it on the shelf above it, smiling at the photo. She was homesick beyond belief but she was out here living her dream. She worked so hard to have this opportunity and would do nothing to jeopardize that.
She turned on her heel and walked out of the room, heading towards medbay for her appointment with the CMO. She smiled at the other people as she walked down the halls. It wasn't until she got just outside the doors of medbay that she heard what she was warned about when it came to the CMO of the ship.
"Are you out of your corn fed mind?!"
"It'll do you some good, Bones!"
"Get out of here before I hypo your ass all the way to next year!"
She saw the Captain backing out of the CMO's office with his hands held up in surrender and when he saw her, he just said, "Good luck" and ran down the hallway.
Marinette raised an eyebrow at the interaction and carefully walked inside, hoping to not upset the CMO further. She was greeted by a nurse who took her name and led her to a biobed and set her up. She watched as the nurse noted her vitals into a PADD and left just as the CMO walked in.
Marinette felt as if her breath caught in her throat. He was more attractive than everyone else seemed to make him out to be. She expected a grumpy old man, not the tall, dark and handsome man that was standing in front of her. She coughed lightly to readjust herself and sat up straight again. She needed to remain a professional while on board the Enterprise. She was here to live her dream, not to develop crushes on senior officers, no matter how attractive they were.
"Name?"
"Lieutenant Marinette LeBeau."
He picked up the PADD the nurse had set down earlier and looked everything over, "You seem to be as healthy as a horse."
"I do try to take care of myself."
He looked up at her, "And it shows."
She felt her breath hitch again, unsure if he was stating it as a fact or flirting.
He moved towards her, setting about doing the physical part of the examination, taking notes every so often. She watched the doctor without realizing it, taking in every movement he did and thinking he was a man she would grow to admire.
"No need to stare at me, darlin'."
Marinette felt her face heat up and turned her head away from him, "I'm sorry, Doctor. I didn't realize I was staring."
She didn't see the smirk on his face or him glancing over at her to see if she had stopped staring. He, however, did notice the blush across her cheeks.
Marinette was staring straight ahead, at the entrance to medbay, focusing on nothing. She tried her hardest to maintain the professionalism Starfleet had expected of each individual and beat herself up for not maintaining that. She could and would do better.
To make small talk, she asked, "So what were you and the Captain arguing about?"
She heard the doctor scoff, "Depends on the day. Today it was Jim trying to set up a blind date for me."
"You two argue a lot?"
"Friends usually do. Especially when one friend can't keep his nose out of other people's business."
"My siblings are like that. I can't tell you how many times I've been asked if I've hooked up with any hot aliens."
She glanced over at the doctor just in time to see him smile slightly, "How many siblings do you have?"
"One brother and three sisters. I'm the youngest."
"I'm glad I only have one." The doctor cleared his throat, "Well, Lieutenant, it seems there is nothing physically wrong with you. I'll need to administer a hypo of just some general antibiotics to make sure you didn't bring anything with you."
She looked down, knowing the procedure for hypos all too well and heard the hiss of it being injected. She looked back up and rolled her neck.
"I'll leave you here for a few minutes to make sure you aren't allergic to anything I just gave you."
She watched him walk away and into his office, seemingly to set the PADD down for him to look over later. She took the time to look around, knowing she would probably become quite accustomed to medbay. Being a field officer, she was at a greater chance for many accidents.
The doctor came back and asked, "How are you feeling?"
"Fit as a fiddle."
"Alright. If anything changes, come back."
She hopped off the biobed, "Thank you, doctor."
Marinette turned on her heel and left medbay to explore the ship a bit. It shouldn't be much different than her old one, but she knew the Enterprise was the biggest ship Starfleet had to offer. She didn't want to be turned around somewhere and end up where she wasn't supposed to be. She found all sections of the ships that she was most likely to be needing, including the science labs.
The smell of food broke her focus as her stomach growled in response. She turned towards the mess hall area and walked inside. She grabbed a tray and some food and went to sit down by herself when a familiar voice broke through the air.
"Hey, LeBeau!"
She turned to see the Captain waving at her. She put on a smile and moved towards the table he was sitting at with most of the bridge crew and Dr. McCoy.
She nodded at everyone and sat down next to Spock, the only person she knew well enough to be comfortable next to.
"Settling in fine?"
"Quite well, Captain."
"You can call me Jim." he said with a wink.
Marinette smiled awkwardly, "Maybe in time."
"I respect that."
"No need to flirt with everything that moves, Jim."
"But that's exactly how we became friends, Bones."
"Worst night of my life."
She turned towards Spock and asked in Vulcan, "Are they always like this?"
"Everyday."
"How do you stand it?"
"I've grown accustomed to ignoring."
"Why don't you speak English so the rest of us understand?"
"Shove it." Marinette said under her breath before taking another bite.
Jim chuckled, "Keep that up and Bones will think you're flirting with him."
"To quote the lady, shove it, Jim."
The Captain laughed and turned to her, "So when did you learn Vulcan?"
"How-"
"I've been around Spock long enough."
"I spent my summers on Vulcan. Mother thought it would build character or something. That's where I met Spock. I only learned how to speak Vulcan out of spite."
"The best reason to do anything." Bones stated as he shoved a piece of food in his mouth.
"All the Vulcan kids told me I was too human to learn how to speak it so I made Spock teach me."
The Captain raised an eyebrow at her and she wondered what he was thinking. She took another bite of her food and observed the group as Chekov and Sulu took over the conversation with one of their antics. She ate her food in silence and just observed the group. They were like an extended family and she hoped she would be included in that one day.
Feeling like she belonged here would make her miss home a little less.
