Malachite knocked softly as he entered the room. Mina following closely behind him, cautiously, with a tray, that had a plate and cup of juice. "We figured you should eat something." He whispered. "So we made you a little plate."
"I am not hungry." Serena replied in a zombie like trance. She sat at the edge of Darien's bed, using her hand a head rest. She didn't take her eyes off of Darien. She watched as his chest went up and down with each breath.
"Serena, you have to eat. You just had a battle, your energy needs to be replenished." Mina came walking over with the tray. "You know this."
"Just put it over there, I will eat when I am hungry."
She hung her head down, and placed the tray on the dresser, next to the other tray she said she was going to eat.
Malachite took a chair opposite on the opposite side of the bed, looked at Darien, the back at Serena. "Princess, you have blood on your arms. Were you checked?" His tone concerned.
"I have self healing..." Her head dropped to the bed. And sniffles could be heard by both Mina and Malachite.
"Sere..." Mina said kneeling to her side. "This was not your fault." She looked at Malachite. Never had she seen him look so vulnerable. Sunk his chair. Fidgeting his finger. Her heart felt heavy. She looked back at Serena. "He was only trying to protect you."
"I am Sailor Moon. I should have been protecting him." She mumbled under her breath.
"I am sorry?" Mina tried to clarify
Serena's head popped up. "I said. I. AM. SAILOR. MOON. I should have been protecting him. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND." Serena slammed her hand on his bed. The quickly looked over to Darien, to make sure he was okay. "I practically did nothing, and by the time I was able too...pftt. I am a disgrace."
"Serena... you cannot put that weight on your shoulders." Mina explained. "Nobody is blaming you. He made his choice to protect you. He did that!"
"I tried that stupid thing I saw in movies. Letting my tears fall into his wound." Serena just shook her head. "It didn't work."
Mina sighed. "I can tell you over and over not to blame yourself, and I know you won't listen. But I can tell you, I am sure he would do it again and again for you." She rubbed her knee to comfort her.
"He really does love you." Malachite added. "I know nothing we could have or would have done, would have stopped him from protecting you." Malachite just shrugged. "What can I say... love can make you do stupid things." He tried to make Serena laugh.
But it didn't work.
"Love isn't supposed to be this hard." Serena slumped over the side of the bad.
"It is not supposed to be easy either." Mina refuted. "But now that Beryl is out of the picture. Who knows?"
"Is she still in the dungeon?"
"Serena, for the millionth time. She is still there. And she will remain there, until we transport her." Mina answered.
"Is she still asking how he is doing?" She grabbed his hand, and started to rub his arm. "Actually don't answer. I don't care. Has anyone called Darien's mom?"
Mina nodded. "Hopefully he will be away the time she gets here." She tried to be optimistic, but received no response from anyone in the room. "He is going to be okay Serena, the best doctors took care of him." Mina reassured.
"And he is a tough guy..."Malachite added to convince himself. "Probably one of the toughest guys I know." He exhaled. "And I have known him for many years." He scratched his forehead. "He is more than just the prince I serve." His head just nodded. "He is like my best friend, more like a brother." His face showed nothing but defeat. "I know how you feel Princess. As his main guard." He just stopped there. His face heating up. His eyes tingling. "I should have gotten there sooner. All the training and I could not get there fast enough."
Serena knew nothing she said would make Malachite stop blaming himself. People have tried all day to help her feel better, but their comments went in one ear and out the other. Nothing could be said to make them feel better. So they just sat there and watched him. Occasionally one would get up to stretch or use the bathroom. Guards, scouts and servants came in and out to check on them and him, as he laid there.
The pain from Darien's wound knocked him back into consciousness. Causing him to grimace. His skin burned and throbbed, as his head pounded almost in sync. He tried to control his breathing as he opened his eyes to see where he was. He knew he was no longer on the hard ground. He could feel something soft supporting his head. He opened his eyes, and then quickly shut them as the bright caused them to sting."Prince!" He heard Malachite's voice call. Darien felt a soft warm embrace on his hand, and he slowly turned his head to that side. He slowly opened his eyes, to see Serena. Her eyes red and puffy. Tears running down her cheeks. She tried to force a smile.
"Please tell me you have not been sitting here crying the whole time." He softly spoke. Trying to not to move so much, at risk of aggravating the pain.
"Well... not the entire..." Mina answered for her. "She did some pacing...and crying too. What she didn't do, was eat. I can tell you that." She tried to make light of the moment, as Serena's head quickly snapped in her direction, with a scowl.
Darien started to laugh, but that was quickly smothered by a cough, followed by another, and then multiple. Darien's body came forward, off the bed. He groaned in pain, while trying to calm his cough and catch his breath. "God this hurts." He forced through his coughs.
"Darien...Darien..." Serena jumped and plopped herself on the bed next to him. She ran her hand through his hair. "Darien, please try to calm. Catch your breath." She forced herself to sound as calm as possible. "Check his wound." She ordered Molly.
Molly simply nodded, and walked to Darien's other side to see if there were any signs of bleeding.
"Darien, I need you to please stay still, I don't want you to reopen your wound. Please." Serena continued to try to calm him down. Until he was finally able to catch his breath, and lay down in peace. "Do you want some water?"
He shook her off, as she patted the sweat off his head. "Are you okay? Did she hurt you? Where is she?"
"I am fine. I am fine." Serena reassured. "She is in the dungeon, we have her in a trance."
Darien grimaced in pain again, then slowly exhaled.
"Maybe he needs more medication."
"No, no...I am okay. Did she hurt you"
"How about some ice?" Serena looked over at Molly, who nodded. "I am fine, Darien. Couple cuts and bumps, but I have self healing. I am okay."
A sense of relief rushed over him, as she again ran her hand's down his face.
"Malachite, maybe we should..." Mina tilted her head to the door.
"But he just woke up." Malachite argued.
"And we will come back. But just give them a minute." Mina explained.
"I promise I will call for you if anything." Serena reassured him.
Malachite huffed. Forced himself out of the chair. Bowed to them both and headed out.
The prince and princess watched as they closed the door behind them.
"Are you okay?" Serena asked.
"Now that I know you're okay."
"I am sorry this happened." Serena broke eye contact and looked down at nothing on the blanket.
"It was not your fault." He move one arm around her and pulled her down into him.
"Oh my Darien, your wound!" Serena yelled, trying to softly pull herself off him.
He held onto her tighter.
"I am fine..."He adjusted himself. "I swear you worry about me more now then when we were married."
He braced himself for a slap. Then peaked through one opened eye.
"Really? You were just injured and you want to joke because of me and you want to joke?"
He ran his hand up and down her back. "This was not your fault." Then he paused. "Well I mean technically because you made me fall in love you... but beside that..." He had to take a second to catch his breath, speaking that many words triggered his wound.
"That is what you get." She lightly tapped his chest.
"Wow! I am injured!"
"Shut up, I didn't even hit you that hard." She made herself comfortable, rested her head on his chest. And sighed. "We're a mess."
He kissed the top of her head. "If anything I should really be apologizing to you."
Serena looked up at Darien confused.
"If I would have been a better man when I was younger." He stroked her arm up and down. "This wouldn't have happened. We would still be married. Beryl, would be probably married to some other rich, royal, schmoe." He shook his head disappointed in himself. "If you ever give me the chance... I promise I will be a better husband this time. No games. No yelling."
Serena pushed herself up, kept the top of her body propped up with her two arms. Smiled. "I just need you to heal and get better now. That is all that matters right now." She caressed his face with her hand closest to him. Then she laid herself down, and listened as Darien's breathing relaxed. She took that as a sign he had fallen asleep, and she too drifted off.
Her sleep was as far from peaceful and relaxing. All she could see was Beryl's face, and hear every nasty thing she said about her. And she for the most part took it. She never said anything back. She thought of 100s of things she could say, but it was like her mind went blank. She was mad at herself, she was mad at Beryl. She was mad that she did not obliterate her, she could have. She had been trained too. Her blood started boil, her heart pounded. Without a second thought, she got out of bed, and stomped towards the door.
She made it all the way down the hall, and down the first step to the basement, where Beryl was being held. Her little hands balled in fist, nails digging into her skin.
"Serena." Rei's voice called. "You better not be going to where I think you are going."
Serena turned around to see Rei and Jadeite behind her.
"You need to go back to bed." Rei ordered.
"I need to see her." Serena justified.
"Why?" Jadeite asked.
"What do you mean why?" Serena stepped back surprised he would even ask that.
"What good is it going to bring? Hmmm? If anything it will upset the prince if anything were to happen to you." Jadeite explained.
"She is in a trance. We don't even know if she will hear anything you have to say." Rei added. "Serena please calm down, I know you are still upset. Let's get some rest. Please."
"I hear what you guys are saying, and if the tables were turned, I would say the exact thing to you all. But you guys did not hear all the terrible things she said about me, and I took it. I cannot have her thinking she got the better of me. I need to go talk to her. You can come. Or stay back. I don't care."
"Serena..." Rei pleaded. "This is a pride thing? She has nothing, and you have it all, why?"
"I just need too." She turned around and headed down the stairs.
Rei looked at Jed. "I will go with her, you get the guards."
He nodded.
