Chapter 13: Showdown At Vermillion Gym
Our story picks up in Vermillion City and our young protagonist is reading a book while sitting at a table outside the Pokemon Center. While reading however he catches a glimpse of Ritchie and his team running into the Pokemon Center with him carrying a very injured Pikachu into the Center. He can guess and say that Ritchie battle Lt.Surge and lost horribly (how does he know this? He saw them go into the gym a while ago) he knew Ritchie would lose there was no denying it. He decided to hear what happened from the Nurse Joy here. He asks her and she explains that Ritchie battled Lt.Surge's Raichu and lost horribly.
Now knowing the full story he decides to go and see the damage and sees Pikachu in a Bed with Bandages around him. He walks startling everyone as they as why he is here and he explains that he heard what happened. Ritchie thens says if he came here to make fun of him for losing. But Ash scoffs and tells him that if he wants to beat Lt.Surge then he is going to have to evolve Pikachu. Ritchie get wide eyed at this and takes out a Thunder Stone he got from Lt.Surge. Ash says that all he has to do is touch Pikachu with it and he will evolve. He then sees Pikachu slap it out of Ritchie's hand and begin to turn away. Brock then explains that maybe Pikachu doesn't want to evolve but Ash chides saying that it is pathetic and what kind of Pokemon does not want to evolve. But Ritcihe chides in saying that maybe Pikachu should choose with Ash scoffing them turning around and leaving saying it will have to evolve if Ritchie wants to win.
The Next day he is walking around city and ends up hearing about the Ss.Anne a luxury ship. He had already bought a ticket, the only reason he was going was to see if any strong enough trainers were present to at least have some battle experience. He continues his walk when he hears battling coming from the gym. He decides to see and pears through the window and sees Ritchie's Pikachu battling Lt.Surge's Raichu and it seems to be winning he looks closer and sees that Pikachu was using Agility to boost his speed and was out speeding Raichu he watched and was a little impressed at the tactic but still any one with a brain would have figured out Surge's Raichu was slow because he evolved it too early. Ritche eventually wins the march and gets the badge, Ash leaves and decides that later on the Ss.Anne he will have a rematch and win.
