Cadet Leroy Jensen: Hahaha, if you get it you get it, if you don't, you don't.

Captain Barrett Verud: Sounds like Archer. (Fate series)

~Chapter start~

Three years ago...

Atlas

Location: Alisius Academy

Fixing up his collar around his new uniform, a disgruntled expression on his face as he looked at himself in the mirror, gone was his usual bangs that would frame his face, instead his grey locks were tied into a pony tail with a single strand still hanging down from his left eye, his uniform consisted of the standard issue uniform for the atlas military trainee, a sleeveless white, blue, and black designed vest with the atlesian military insignia situated right above the right breast, the pants however were just a pair of black combat pants with white armoured guards covering his shins, that would connect onto his armored white combat boots.

Face cringing at the sight of the insignia, finding just the sight of it on his body absolutely revolting, sure, it's easy for his superiors to say 'It's only an Infiltration mission' but they're not the ones playing house with the enemy.

Turning his head towards his single bed, glancing at the saber on it with a frosty glare, due to his sword Howls infamy among atlas, he couldn't even bring that with him, instead he was left with a simple silver saber with a dust compatibility port at the bottom of the hilt.

'My orders were also to appear like a casual below average student, not too horrible to get kicked out, but just horrible enough to remain an unseen pain.' Fenrir thought sarcastically, taking absolutely no joy in his new life for the next 6 months, not only does he not have his blade, but his dignity will likely never recover from this.

All cadets report to the main Atrium Immediately! I repeat! All cadets report to the main courtyard Immediately!'

Closing his eye's, exhaling through his nose to expel anymore of his moaning, he had a mission to do, whether he liked it or not, it was for the cause. moving towards his bed, grabbing his blade and sheathing it in the strap on his belt. he'd better make his way to the courtyard.

But he had to be late... he had a new image to uphold after all.

45 minutes later...

Pristine white walkways with dust infused blue lighting, Tall buildings built up like pointed spires ringed around the main courtyard like pillars, each building likely housing two hundred men and women in each, Since there was eight of these damn things, that's alot of personel.

Atlas sure knew how to run their academies, constant video/scroll surveillance to keep an eye on both you and what you intend on using the academies scroll for, daily room checks every morning and night, privacy seemed a rarity here.

He didn't even want to mess with the threat that loomed above...

Staring up at the flying terror as he continued to make his way to the courtyard, 'Atlesian 'Dreadnought' class vessel, It's armaments consist of twelve one hundred and fifty millimeter Auto cannons placed underneath and above the vessels main hull, four anti air missile batteries atop the hull, And two dust infused helios beam cannons on each wing.' Fenrir narrowed his eye's at the ship, excessive is all he really had to say about it.

Detailed reports showed that the overall dreadnaught design was going to be scrapped due to lack of funding caused by white fang raids, till the SDC caught wind of it and offered exclusive funding, with that operation 'Typhoon' was back on track and the first batch of dreadnaughts were produced.

And with that the Atlas branch of the fang returned to Mistral, only the more discreet informants remained.

Even still, there was absolutely no way he would be able to contact his Superiors now.

But he could improvise on all that later, what he needed to focus on was their training regime.

For most hours of everyday, everyone would go through physical training which included, morning runs up the frigid path of mount gorgon, Atlas's western outpost lay just around the center of the mountain. so it was more than likely that their physical training would be held there.

However since he planned on being incompetent for the time being, fenrir wasn't all that bothered by slacking a little, he barely felt the cold anymore.

For the small margin of hours they have left, would be put towards their mental capacity, broadening their knowledge in weaponry, logistics, tactical equipment and and combat strategies against all forms of enemies.

All forms including the fang... interesting.

'Apparently they think they know how we operate, that we are obvious in our scheme's, an animal has it's habits yes, but they can also be unpredictable.' Fenrir thought, annoyed by how at every turn they were underestimated, even after all the fangs victories and exploits, they were still nothing to Atlesian might.

Time would tell if that remained so.

It was that very reason he was here to begin with, learn their tactics, aquire locations beneficial to their expansion, and steal any and all documents regarding weaponry and tech.

Also If possible, garnering information on certain high value targets would be an added bonus to the cause aswell.

Spotting the courtyard ahead, already seeing the plethora of students gathered, each one standing straight side by side in ordered lines, officers walking down every line making sure every cadet was accounted for.

Expression souring slightly, getting ready to make an utter fool of himself, anyone else could have done this damn mission! anyone, but no! he was stuck limiting himself for six months. such a joy.

His instincts knew there was someone behind him, his instincts knew the hand that was coming to grab the back of his neck, his instincts knew to react and counter his enemy.

Yet fenrir knew, he couldn't do anything, so he allowed what came next to happen.

"Another late one is it?! Move it cadet!"The instructor growled out angrily, his voice raspy, likely from yelling before to some other unfortunate students here, gripping the back of fenrirs neck harshly, the uncomfortable feeling of someone's hands on him nearly made fenrir turn around and gut the man, restraint was a lovely thing to know in this situation.

Turning his head a little to the side a sheepish grin on his face, "Hahaha... sorry, I was uhh?.. kinda lost, my bad?"He mumbled skittishly, taking breaths every now and again for being rushed forward without any intent on stopping from the man pushing him forward.

Feeling the grip on the back of his neck tighten, resisting the urge to elbow the man, "Shut your mouth boy! you're already in enough trouble as it is, the more you talk, the worse the punishment will be for you later!" The instructor whispered harshly behind him, restraining his anger well at a cadets obvious disobedience.

Spotting several other cadets in front of them, on their knees with their heads bowed down, likely late comers aswell, this punishment used to shame them infront of the many other students here, yet none of their eyes left the podium.

Halting next to the line of 'misfits' acting fearful of being labelled as a horrible student on day one, grunting in pain as he felt a sharp pain in his left leg, the man kicking the back of his leg to make him bend a knee, not being able to get a good look of the man on the stage, his head being bowed down roughly as he now stared at the ground in faux shame.

"You! and these degenerates! will await further instruction after the ceremony is finished, what you see should only be the ground, you even attempt to lift your head! believe me... I'd advise against it, Do, I, Make, myself clear?!"

"Yes sir!" Just shouting that made fenrir's mouth feel vile, grimacing in disgust, silently glad if anyone saw his expression it could be taken as berating himself mentally.

Hearing the man grunt dismissively, moving away from them to continue his inspections, hearing his footsteps fade away filled him with some relief, his cold hands were no longer gripping his nape.

He vowed to kill him if he ever got the chance though...

"Is everyone accounted for?... Excellent then let's begin."

Feeling a tap on his shoulder, inwardly groaning in annoyance, couldn't he just be left alone, the image he had to keep up was taxing, having to use it too often was starting to suck.

"Hey, what's your name?"

A female voice? soft and gentle, yet he could detect her mischievous intentions through her aura.

"First and foremost, I am colonel Johnathan Augustine, you all will be required to address me as colonel Augustine during your time here. Now! it is an honor in itself to witness so many young students, willing to join within our ranks, and for that I welcome you all to Alisius academy."

"Fenrir... you?"he muttered nervously, fine he'd play her game.

"No last name?"The girl asked curiously.

"I don't even know your name!" Whispering out incredulously, the nerve of this girl.

"Oh.. right." she muttered dumbly, it was obvious she was just playing stupid.

"I will not lie to any of you, this academy is not at all like every other kingdoms, we value our military structure above many other kingdoms, so, we expect nothing less from our future huntsman or soldiers, you will all undergo training made to make you better, those of you who exceed that, you will be give the chance to be drafted into our specialist core, where that training... is made to break you."

"Alsanna."

"What?" fenrir asked dumbly, he was a little distracted by the speech this man was making.

"Alsanna, that's my name."She offered again softly, not even a hint of annoyance in her tone.

"I have faith many of you will succeed, I have faith many of you will become good soldiers, but I am a realist at heart and understand by experience not all of you will succeed, but do not let that deter you from your ambitions."

"He's a good man."

"Huh?" He asked offhandedly, confusion written on his face, this girl was utterly random.

"The colonel," She muttered, the respect for the man obvious in her awestruck tone, "He's a good man, he's kinda the only reason I'm sticking around." Alsanna implied cheekily, giggling cutely.

He kinda just... stared at the ground in muted silence, this... alsanna person, she was just so... strange, so different, she seemed too... nice to be lumped in with the common trouble makers, hidden agenda maybe? because there was still something very off about her.

"The experience and skills you aquire here, will further expand your own horizons in the path you choose to take, But just to clarify, Alisius academy was not at all military based in the beginning, Huntsman are a commodity in how remnant functions today, so this is as much a training regiment for huntsman as it is a soldier , so in saying that, a question for you all, what is the difference between a huntsman, and a soldier?"

Fenrir could practically hear everyone start to move about, some questioning themselves on an answer, some questioning the question itself, asking themselves if it was important, and a large percentage of them wondering why such an easy question.

'The man's practically asking someone to speak out, yet at the same time he knows many of them are too embarrassed to give the wrong answer.' Fenrir couldn't quite grasp this sort of logic, the question itself asks for a simple answer, yet it sounds as if he has a different one entirely.

What a stupid question...

"Yes, you in the seventh column, state your name then answer."

"Sir! Cadet leeroy Jensen sir!" The young cadet shouted, his voice evidently male, " A huntsman hunts grimm! and a soldier fights for his kingdom!"

"Hmm not wrong, but not right either."

If everyone was allowed to talk, he just knew they'd all be muttering amongst themselves wondering why that answer wasn't sufficient, the man had his answer, and it wasn't changing for anyone.

"A huntsman or huntress are each an individual unit categorized in their own style to combat grimm, they are not bound by a single kingdom like a soldier is, they are free to do their job anywhere, and that job is to safeguard humanity by killing grimm."

Fenrir's eye's narrowed slightly as he heard that all too familiar voice, he was pretty sure all of the supposed 'Troublemakers' are now looking at her dumbstruck.

"A soldier is a tricky one, many interpret soldiers differently, to me, a soldier is a defender and a conqueror, two sides of a shapeless coin, their reason for fighting evident on what they care about most, which, could naturally lean towards any side."

Hearing the tell-tale signs of angry footsteps nearing, she's likely pissed off the instructor for talking without permission, but what she said wasn't at all wrong. an interpretation of either was up to the individual, a good answer.

"Ah! ow! argh!"

Hearing her pained squeals caused something in him to snap, at first he was staring at the ground, next minute he was staring at a bald headed instructor, body motionless as he had just hit the side of his head with a weighted fist, his golden irises lit up in molten rage.

Feeling the rush of wind on his face, before the harshness of the floor was a pretty painful reminder that he had just gotten floored, and judging by the fact he couldn't even move, this guy was tough, both of his hands were bound together by this man's grip, he remained calm however, the subtle grimace on his face displaying his discomfort.

"Oh for the love of... I mean, instructors! take your section of students to their dorms immediately!"

"Yes sir!!!"

"Move it you on the double!!"

"Move! move! move! I want to see those legs moving fast cadets!"

With the many students filing out of the courtyard, their instructors keeping each column under their watch in a synchronized jog, their groans could still be heard as the courtyard started to grow quiet.

His current image was now completely ruined, he'd adapt and plaster a new image on now to fit in, just aslong as his cover isn't blown of course.

"Until the colonel gets here, I'm keeping you on the ground, the fact you're not resisting is nice though."

This mans tone was disturbingly calm, fighting was a common place for him, serving was a merit, killing an art, whoever this person was holding him down, he'd prove quite formidable in a confrontation.

"Captain, let him up."

"Sir."

Feeling the man's grip around his wrist loosened, before the tightened around his collar, yanking him up forcefully as he came face to face with 'The colonel'.

Dark grey hair slicked back and tied into a short pony tail, the style itself a more older atlesian colonial cut, Gaunt cheeks and sharp light blue eyes, a noticable claw mark running from his neck to the tip of his chin, his mouth set into a thin line, his displeasure obvious.

His attire consisted of a large black militarized trenchcoat with white trimmings and pauldrons, on the left side of his chest were an entire assortment of medals, black leather pants and combat boots.

Turning to stare at the downed instructor, an indescribable look in his eye, before turning back to fenrir, eyeing him sternly. "The corporal has a concussion, captain Verud, take him to the infirmary, and let him know he has a week off." He ordered briskly, his blue eye's never leaving fenrir's molten gold.

"On it sir."

Turning his gaze away from the colonel, The captains appearance was covered completely in what looked like a modified version of the atlesian military armour, all decked out in black, his unique helmet completely blank, nothing but a faceless visor to look at.

Lifting the man over his shoulder with ease, Verud couldn't help but be wary of the kid now, knocking out an instructor who had his aura active was not an easy feet, even if it was a spur of the moment rage, that reaction time was too well trained.

Turning his head slowly towards the kid, taking in his demeanor, true he looked shameful and nervous but...

'Those eye's, they're missing something...'

"Captain?"

Turning to the colonel, understanding the look he was giving him, Verud nodded, satisfied the colonel caught on aswell, he made his way to the infirmary, knowing full well the pain the corporal had ahead of him.

Fenrir stared at the captains retreating form skeptically, a prototype maybe? custom made armour unseen by most, unknown functions and equipment, whoever that man was, he'd like to know if there were more of them around.

Augustine turned his gaze to the girl, currently staring at him with a sheepish expression, gaze drooping slightly as he regarded her with tired look, she was a lot of hard work, how her father dealt with her, he'd never know.

"Is it really that difficult to listen for once, I told you to stay with verud until after the initiation."

Alsanna didn't seem to like that as a reminder, groaning in annoyance, "It wasn't my fault, verud said go mingle for a bit, so I did, got caught by the bald guy, fen knocked out, got in trouble for not complying, wound up out front and the rest is history." She muttered, a slight pout on her face, if she had to get in trouble, Mr 'I wear cool armor' can get on the chopping block too.

Neither noticed how Fenrir twitched at the use of such a familiar nickname.

Eyes growing stern at the accusation against his second in command, his expression hardening. "I find it hard to believe that verud told you to go and mingle." He wasn't going to put up with her games, she found something she liked and acted out to get it, plain a simple.

This time however It was a person...

Turning to the liked person in question, yes he could definitely see why she picked him out of the bunch, he had an aura about him that didn't fit the expressions he dolled out on his face, his reaction time was far too quick for a trainee, he took down a trained soldier with ease, and bear in my he's not a racist man at heart, but the faunus trait he sports links him far too closely with the white fang.

In respect to his cover however, if by luck alsanna never spotted him, he'd have never have known about his identity, maybe later on through his training he may have discovered him, but it may have been too late by then.

But knowing alsanna, she had probably discovered him early while searching through his captains files... which the captain should've left locked up. so she does end up getting what she wanted, verud on the chopping block too.

Pinching the bridge of his nose in irritation, "Perfect, first job on my road to retirement and I end up with a downed instructor, a total unknown, that may, or may not be, spy," returning his steely gaze to the young heiress staring up at him with a look sparkling with innocence. "And there's you too..."

If it were up to him, he'd take the boy into questioning now. explain to alsanna why the boy would have to be interrogated, best case scenario, she understands and throws a little tantrum, then gives him the silent treatment for the foreseeable semester.

Worst case she drops out of the program and then proceeds to run away again, and in all likelihood he'd have to go hunt her down... again.

He's getting too old for this shit...

"Hey Fen? you can look at me now."

Tearing his gaze away from the colonel was difficult, he had a feeling the colonel had sniffed him out, which wasn't great at all, he failed his mission before it even started! and now it looks like he could be imprisoned, tortured for information, then made an example of.

If it weren't for this stupid girl he wouldn-...

"Oh no..."

"You wanted my full name, right? Alsanna, Alsanna schnee, nice to finally see you!"

Feeling a painful tug on his mind and heart, the memories flickering in his mind like a dancing flame.

"If you could choose, would you still wanna be you?

Memories of a mission, memories of a train swimming in ice, his body frozen under the weight of his failure.

"Look at me with your eyes, and your eyes only, I wanna see the truth in them, I wanna see what you feel."

Rage, blood Thirst, vengeance, everything from the past thumped back at him again and again. reveling In the feeling of satisfaction...

"Tell me you hate me... make me leave... please? I don't want to feel this anymore..."

A flicker of white enters his vision, the softness of white locks tickling at his fingertips once again.. a face of passion... a face of longing, a face he can never see.

"Are you stupid? forget the fang, forget my family. and look me in the eye and tell me what you want?"

Feeling the dream twist into a nightmare. the train melting away into flame. his body no longer weighed down by the frost, the flames wrapping around him in a violent silhouette leaving him with-

"I... I want to live."

Leaving him with nothing but pain.

Dream end.

Present

Time: 6:30am

Eyes opening wide, his irises blazing gold as he stared up at the ceiling in restrained panic and fear, a thick sheen of sweet coating his entire body, his breathing coming out frantically as he tried to calm himself.

"Tough dream huh?"

Hearing tukson's voice didn't actually irritate him, In a way, it was a welcome distraction, Fenrir started to relax a bit, his eyes still staring up at the roof, the glow in his irises dying down to a calm golden hue, his breathing started to level out as the tension in his body eased.

"How long?"Fenrir questioned, his voice barely above a whisper.

Tukson was currently seated on a chair next to the bed, raising a single eyebrow at the question, "Gonna have to clarify for me, dont know which question your implying." Kids hurting that's plain to see, but he was getting sick of his vague behavior.

"How long have you been sitting there?"

Tukson regarded him quietly, his eyes gaining a soft look to them, "Since you started growling, and clawing at an unseen enemy, so I'd say roughly Two hours I've been sitting here." He answered calmly, taking a sip from the coffee clutched tightly in his hands.

Scowling lightly at the roof, "And you didn't bother waking me up?" He asked plainly, a hint of annoyance at the edge of his tone

Taking another sip from his coffee, closing his eyes as he sighed contently, "No, I didn't wake the raging assassin that was currently going through a nightmare, who, I might add, likely has defensive reflexes during their sleep." He drawled out almost mockingly, his tone thick with sarcasm.

Eyes narrowing into a glare after being insulted, until he put some thought into what tukson had said... expression growing blank, "Oh... right." Fenrir muttered dumbly, nope tukson was right again.

"Hmm glad you're seeing it that way too."

Fenrir let out a short breath, "No other way to look at it really."

Eyeing Fenrir's calm expression skeptically for a bit. "Hm, fraid not."

Both sat quietly in silence for awhile, tukson taking the occasional sip out of his coffee until his mug was empty, Fenrir staring off into the ceiling, not at all bothered by the quiet... having company was nice aswell.

Tukson made a move to get up, sighing one last time as he did so, already knowing fen, probably wasn't in any condition to talk about that dream of his.

"Alright. my mugs empty and I'm getting hungry, I'm gonna make us some breakfast before you head off to the academy."

Before he could make it out the door, someone finally started to speak up.

"Tukson?.."

Turning to give the kid a backwards glance, "Hm?"

"Thank you."

Offering a small smile, hearing actual emotion in his voice for once, "When your ready to talk about it, that's entirely up to you." chuckling softly as he returned to making his way out, "but right now get cleaned up, and get your stuff ready. clocks ticking."

A shame really...

Tukson never did get to catch the small smile on Fenrir's face after he left.

Location: Vale Airship services (V.A.S)

Moving forward with his bags and Howl in tow, his expression plain as he eyed everyone getting on board of the airship, All of them saying their goodbyes to family and friends like it was the last time they would see them, as if they were going to war.

'How dramatic can you get...' He thought, deadpanning at some blonde kid crying with his sisters, honestly he'd give him a day tops.

And that's him being generous...

"Let me guess, your judging how dramatic all these people are, and have already analyzed their survivability rate?"

Resisting the urge to roll his eyes, turning to tukson with a look of indifference, "Hn. that obvious?"

Allowing a small grin to grace his beared face, "Only to those who know you're more talkative in your head." Readjusting the bags on his shoulder, offering them out towards fenrir. "Here, packed some extra clothes, books, and a silver case with some dust infusions."

Raising his eyebrow at the, grabbing the offered strap, "Dust infusion? How'd you afford those?" He asked, he knew tukson owned a bookstore but dust infusion's weren't cheap.

Scratching the back of his head sheepishly, chucking as he did so, "lets just say I had these on standby for emergencies and leave it at that."

Eyeing him knowingly for a second before shrugging, "Well... thanks." Fenrir muttered blankly.

'The airship to beacon will be departing in four minutes. I repeat the Airship to beacon will depart in four minutes.'

"Well I guess that's my queue, see-"

"Fen, wait a sec will ya?"

Turning to stare at tukson strangely, the mans expression unreadable as he stared sadly at his enclosed fist, a metal chain dangling between his fingers as he offered it to him.

"This is a bunny pendant that once belonged to someone very important to me, if she were here, I know damn well she would've wanted you to have it."

Eyes widening a fraction... did the man have to do this now, here of all places... God damnit! he will not join the rank and file of dramatics aswell.

Snatching it out of the mans and rushing off quickly, leaving the man a little shocked, not just at how fast he snatched it, but not even a thanks in appreciation, not even a question on who it belonged.

"Thanks tukson!"

Oh well , he said thanks though...

Staring at the kids back, his long grey hair swaying wildly as he rushed towards the airship, a small rueful smile present. "Well, He truly is your son, hair and all, you'd be proud of him too if you were here." he muttered, a bittersweet feeling taking over as he watched the airship take off.

"Feel sorry for you man, kids a bit unruly don't you think?"

Perfect! a much needed distraction.

Staring at the man with a calm expression, scratching his beard in thought. "That's funny I was going to say the same thing about your son, the big idiot in armor right?"

"Excuse me!"

Haha, live well fen...

Chapter end

Holy moley... this year sucks too.

But seriously though, thank you all, for putting up with my yearly chapter updates, this chapter unfortunately will leave alot of you going, wait that's it? Wtf? you give us something and don't have the balls to finish! yes, it was all intentional, some of Fenrir's past will be fleshed out over the course of his studies, but trust me, I'm going to enjoy writing the next chapters.

Then it'll be, 'Finally the fun stuff' or 'Yay finally, the main cast or Phyrra' my moneys in phyrra, I'm going to love writing her too.

Anyway my darkest path of pain chapter should hopefully be done in another month, so there's that too!

Anyway rant over.

On a more serious note though, for this chapter I wanted to give a little color to my character, he was cool and all but I like working with the fleshy bits, to try and give my readers a bit of background, but not too much of course, sorry for being vague, and if I did it poorly.

Regarding Alsanna, yes she's a schnee and related to Weiss and her family. but as a cousin, she's more of a branch family member, and yes I didn't describe her appearance cause in a way, Fenrir's forgotten what she looked like due to what had happened, sad really...

But her appearance will be described... way, way later on.

And before anyone says it, no this does not mean he'll like Weiss like that.

For the Colonel and captain however, To me I thought most within the Atlesian military were a bit... lackluster? I wanted to be able to expand on an army, describe it more thoroughly. and these two are just the start of it.

But I sincerely hope all of you are still safe and well in the world, take care and remember... insult me!!!

Yours truly: Incrilix
