"Woody? Woody, can you hear me?" Woody's fogged mind heard voices. They sounded like they were above his head. That was weird. "Woody?" He heard Buzz speaking to him. He slowly opened his eyes. Buzz was leaning directly over him, concern and worry on his face, and his other friends were gathered in a circle around him, anxious to know what had happened to their sheriff. "Woody? He's coming around," Buzz said. "Woody? Are you alright?"
Woody groaned a little. "M-Mitsy, she..."
"She's okay, Sheriff. She's fine." Jack said.
"You fainted!" Rex cried. "Did you have a heart attack?!"
"Seriously, dude?" Buttercup gaped.
"Don't be such an egnaramoos," Potato Head huffed.
"Woody, what happened?" Jessie asked.
"Don't know..." Woody grunted, then he looked pleadingly up at Buzz. Not here, he mouthed. Buzz realized his friend needed to talk, privately.
"Okay, everyone," Buzz ordered. "Back up. Give him some airway." The other toys obeyed. "You all go find something to do. I'll see that he's taken care of." Slinky reluctantly walked away. Bullseye quickly licked Woody before leaving, and the others shuffled after him. All except Jessie. She and Buzz pulled Woody to his feet.
"Uhm, Jess? Could...could you give us a few minutes? Please?" Woody asked. Jessie stared thoughtfully at her brother, then glanced at Buzz before she walked off. Woody and Buzz trudged to the living room for some much needed privacy and sat on the couch.
"What's going on, cowboy?" Buzz asked slowly.
"Buzz, you...you know I didn't sleep well last night," Woody moaned.
"I sure do!" Buzz agreed. Woody told his best friend all that had happened at the school. "Oh, man," Buzz stated dismally.
Woody rubbed his face. "The worst dream I had last night was..." Woody was having trouble finding his voice. Buzz waited patiently. "It...it was back at the incinerator. I was hanging by my pull-string. I looked below me, and...and saw Bo Peep and Mitsy. They were both hanging desperately to a single strand of yarn above the flames. I...I...I c-c-couldn't reach both of them! I...I...I...I could only save one of them!" Woody cried, his breath hitched. "Bo….Bo was melting before my eyes! She...she was almost gone! I...I had to choose b-between them!" Woody shuddered, covering his face with his hands. He was shivering violently and Buzz put his arm protectively around his friend. "I...I couldn't...I couldn't save them both!"
"Let me guess," Buzz gravely finished for him. "You reached out and grabbed Bo."
"Yes." Woody whispered in a heartbroken quiver. "The moment I pulled her up to safety, the yarn slipped and Mitsy was sailing down to the infernal pit! I left Bo up to safety and let myself down as far as my string would let me, hoping that I might be able to save Mitsy! But...but I was too late! I reached for her hand as far as I could, but she...she was falling too far down! It...it was horrible!" Woody was sobbing now, remembering all too vividly the horrible terror, helplessness, and betrayal in her blue eyes, and...and her heart-splitting scream. "I..." Woody couldn't finish. He curled up into his knees, shaking and weeping. Buzz rubbed his shoulder.
When Woody had calmed down, he spoke again. "I've been so on edge inside all day, wanting Mitsy to be safe."
"I understand that, Woody." Buzz said solemnly.
"You do?"
"Yes. Heck, we're all still a bit shaken from last night!" Buzz told him. Buzz cared for and loved each toy in his family very much, but Jessie came first. She always came first. "But just remember, you're both safe at home now with those who care about you."
"Yeah, thanks, partner." Woody smiled.
"Hey, I'm really sorry about that nightmare. That had to be rough. Just thank God it wasn't real! To have to choose between the two of them..."
"Buzz, please!" Woody covered his face with his hands.
"I'm just saying, Woody, that I probably would've done the same." Buzz said seriously. Woody looked at his friend dejectedly.
"I just hope it's all over. And I mean, really over." He said anxiously.
"It is, Woody. This time, I can guarantee you it is." Buzz said, rubbing Woody's arm. "Now, why don't we go back to Bonnie's room, so you and Mitsy can both get some rest?"
"Buzz, just...let's just sit here for a while first." Woody interjected.
"Oh. Okay." Buzz reluctantly agreed.
Woody went quiet for a good half hour, heavily breathing in and out, and rubbing his face over and over. Yesterday, everything had happened so fast and so much had happened, his mind and body were still turning wheels in survival mode. Finally, Buzz decided he'd had enough. He stood up.
"Come on, Woody. Time to head back." He said, offering his hand. Woody looked up dazedly at him and took his hand. They descended from the couch and slowly left the living room.
