What does she mean by that?

"You will engage in combat with each other to allow me to view each of your combat styles. Begin."

The three of us glanced at each other before Miyugi and Trigyoko darted away. I faked a yawn as I leaned with my back to the tree. With it as cover, I could only be attacked in my field of vision.

After a few seconds, a paper bomb fell two feet short of me, and I rolled my eyes. We were supposed to train to our full capabilities. If this was one of my teammate's full capabilities, I was disappointed. I leapt into the branches overhead before the bomb exploded. As the smoke cleared, Trigyoko became visible searching the cloud for me.

I threw a kunai, staking his sandal in place and effectively trapping him briefly. He searched for the source of the kunai, but failed to look up. I didn't reveal myself while I looked for Miyugi.

"Fire Style: Dragon's Breath!"

I jumped out of the tree just in time as it was engulfed in flame by Miyugi.

"Wind Style: Vortex Trap," I whispered as I completed my hand signs. When I turned around, Miyugi was wrapped in a funnel of swirling wind from the waste down, immobilizing him.

Over my shoulder, Trigyoko was watching us with his jaw hanging, dumbstruck. He still hadn't freed himself from my kunai.

More concerned with Miyugi's taijutsu than anything Trigyoko might do, I primarily focused on him. That was my mistake.

Earth Style: Earth Spire!"

The ground below me quaked and rumbled. I acted on instinct.

"Lightning Style: Lightning Shield!" Despite my voice sounding confident and my hands feeling sure, I didn't know the jutsu.

The earth below me stopped shaking as a crackling sphere of energy around me faded. Below my feet was only a small raised mound of scorched dirt. I must have burned away the rest of Trigyoko's intended pillar.

Before I could focus in again, my kunai grazed my arm. If Trigyoko were my enemy, I would be dead.

"Leave the boys to it, Ayami. You're out."

"Yes, Sensei."

I settled in next to Niyana as Miyugi was released from my trap and got up in Trigyoko's face, attacking with taijutsu. Trigyoko didn't seem to have the time for ninjutsu hand signs with Miyugi on him. Miyugi quickly had Trigyoko on his back at his mercy.

"Enough. This battle is won."

Miyugi helped Trigyoko up before the two joined Niyana Sensei and I on the side of the field.

"Let's talk about your displays just now. Miyugi, I can't decide if it was intelligent or incredibly foolish to primarily stay out of the combat until openings presented themselves. Trigyoko or Ayami could have changed targets at anytime, but this time at least, it worked in your favor. That being said, sneaking up on Ayami was a good plan ruined by over exuding. You alerted her to your presence and she easily avoided your attack. Try to keep your jutsu to yourself."

"Sorry, Sensei."

"Trigyoko, traditionally the one who strikes first in a fight is at an advantage to be the victor. This was not true in your case. I'd highly advise you avoid such reckless charges in the future. Had your opponent not been distracted, you'd not have bested her. Plan your moves more carefully in the future."

"Yes, Sensei."

"Last, but not least, Ayami. You did well against both boys at first, then were distracted after burning away Trigyoko's pillar. What happened there?"

"I-I...One of the jutsu I did...I don't know how I did it."

"The lightning one, I presume?"

"Yes, Sensei."

"How did you come by the wind jutsu? That was not a leaf village technique."

"A friend taught it to me before I ever set foot in the academy, to protect me in case I didn't become a ninja."

"Both were very strong for one so young who did not claim any particular talent for chakra control. I believe this indicates your jutsu types."

"You mean, you can be naturally inclined to more than one type?"

"Rare, but yes. What triggered the lightning jutsu you claim not to know?"

"I don't know. I didn't have time to dodge Trigyoko's jutsu, and then my voice and my hands just kind of acted, but not by my conscious mind."

"Perhaps a memory? You don't know what your life was like before the storm three years ago, right?"

"It's not impossible, but why don't I remember how to do it again?"

"Your brain is still suppressing the memory, even if some pieces are starting to leak through. Perhaps it would be best if Kakashi watched your training. He could teach you any old jutsu you might similarly do by instinct with his copying ability."

"Why didn't the Hokage place me on his team then?"

"Teams are decided for a number of factors. Sasuke and Naruto were teamed up because of Sasuke's top notch grades and ability, to match up with Naruto's shortcomings. Sakura rounds the team out with her intelligence and chakra control. Kakashi hand selected them, and he's even harder to please than I am."

"Why put me somewhere I can't do well?"

"I believe you'll do better than you think here. We have a well balanced team, and Miyugi and Trigyoko already brought one memory out for you. I'm certain they can do it again. Team seven and team fourteen will work more closely together than you might expect, should the six of you pass Kakashi's and my tests. What was the name of the jutsu you used? Perhaps Kakashi has already come across it and can teach it to you now."

"Lightning Shield."

"Wait here. I'll ask him about it, and grab lunch for all of us while I'm at it."

"Really, free lunch?"

"Sure," she replied with a smirk.

Once Niyana Sensei was out of earshot, the boys kept staring at me.

"What?" I asked bluntly.

"You really don't remember anything from before three years ago?" Miyugi asked.

"Nothing."

"So not even your last name? Or when your birthday is?"

"Those things I know, because the Hokage told me when he was testing me for entrance to the academy. My last name is Mitsuki. My birthday is November seventh. I don't know where I came from or how I ended up here instead."

When Niyana returned, she was grinning openly. She appeared empty handed. "The good news is I can teach you that jutsu, Ayami."

After she showed me the hand signs, I went back to the tree and tried it out. A shield formed of lightning shot out in front of me, destroying what little remained of the tortured plant.

"Not quite. Watch me again."

This time, she exaggerated her movements. Besides the hand signs, she twirled her finger in a circle before shooting both hands out around her.

On my second attempt, I did the correct jutsu, but not with enough power to sustain or complete the bubble. Instead I wound up with a dome that flickered three times before I lost the power. After another handful of tries, I could make the complete orb and hold it for about five seconds. It wasn't anything like the easy, thoughtless way I used it to defend myself earlier.

"Since she can now do her jutsu, you said that was the good news. What's the bad news, Niyana Sensei?" Miyugi asked meekly.

"I'm so glad you asked, young man. About that free lunch...it's not quite free. While you won't have to compensate me the money, they do have a price."

"Which is?" Trigyoko asked impatiently.

"If you want to eat...you have to get through me."
