Chapter 8: The great escape

The wind howled, its moans mingling with the moans and roar of the temple fire, creating a demonic wail, the last song of the Nanusake cult.

The girls found the agreed place on a dune among twisted coniferous trees and unearthed the bundle their mother had packed for their escape. Inside they found a letter…

'If you're reading this, I haven't managed to escape with you, forgive me, I failed you, my loves!' Were the first words of the letter. The rest explained directions to where the girls should go, and who to find.

'Uchiha…' whispered Izumi with uncertainty in her voice reading the last words of the letter. 'Akira, where is Konohagakure?'

The older sister, suddenly, as if at the sound of this word, shuddered. Tensing all her muscles she threw her head up, her eyes covered with black Shinengan, which activated itself by a violent memory.

She remembered the black-eyed boy from her first moon festival when Nanusake women, as part of their annual tour of the villages, visited Konohagakure.

Pretty little smile hides every tear behind my eyes…*

His beautiful, deep curious eyes, those delicate, smooth, pale hands, and that voice. She never forgot it, only pushed it into the depths of unconsciousness, overwhelmed by recent events and the trauma of the clan massacre, which was just beginning to set roots in her heart. Uchiha ... it was not a normal meeting, this boy was not an ordinary man, one of the hundreds met and passed on her way. There was more to these two than just a fleeting meeting, a strong bond of destiny that manifested through violent visions. Glimpses of his perspective, like a fading scent from the past that tickles his nostrils for a split second and dissipates into the air. Sights of the future, incomprehensible images, mature shapes and features of Akira's face looking at herself in the reflection of a black lake, shapely, slender fingers, navy blue varnish on nails. Itachi's face.

Heart until it's almost white 'Cause I want to let you feel strong.

'Itachi' she whispered. She had never met him, but something suggested that name to her, and she was sure that was the name of the boy. Suddenly she felt a gently growing tug inside. Unnamed feeling, sense of longing. She smiled placing her hand over her heart. Izumi looked at her sister with a puzzled look. After a moment, she sighed and lowered her head, tears as large as peas began to drip from her eyes. She dropped the letter from her hand so as not to smudge the ink.

The moon disappeared behind the clouds and with it, a silver light illuminated two small creatures sitting on top of the dunes. The wind broke. The heart-rending cries of despair of the sisters mingled with the wind's wails. One night, their lives turned upside down, turning everything into chaos. There was nothing to go back to, all bridges burned, and everyone they knew ceased to exist… just now. They were left completely alone, and the awareness of this slowly reached them, flooding them with the enormity of paralyzing fear and despair.

Izumi felt a presence deep inside. A strong dark chakra moved restlessly while the Moth's chakra receded into the background. With each moment, the demon's chakra manifested itself more and more, gurgling unpleasantly under the skin, Izumi felt that she was slowly losing control, sinking into black despair. She vomited and fell convulsively to the ground. Akira noticed what was happening to her younger sister and immediately felt a hit of reproach towards herself - why was she so thoughtless to let the little one suddenly feel everything, get carried away by despair, especially now, in such an unstable moment?

Wiping away her tears, she made seal marks, placing her hand on her younger sister's forehead, instantly stopping the 7-Tails' chakra. She has practised this a hundred times before. This was the first time she had the opportunity to apply it, she knelt for a moment, motionless, her hands clasped white on her knees. After a moment, she shook her head, took a deep breath, and hugged her younger sister, wiping away her tears. All responsibility is now in her hands.

'I won't let anything happen to you. Promise.'

Soon the girls gathered themselves together, having waited out the storms. Akira summoned her animal - a fluffy poodle moth, which they boarded and flew towards the Hidden Leaf Village.
