Nonstop.
He has been non stop for the past few weeks.
Toshi was lucky that he could keep up with Sukuna, and yet, it was odd. Ever since that day where Yua tried to get his last bottle of sake back, not to mention the sudden demand for it, made him pause and wonder.
"Sukuna… why are you working so hard on this? I thought this was merely a hobby…"
He peered over. Sukuna had paused from the latest batch of mash before he turned to him. "It's one of the few times I have been complimented on something that isn't jujutsu." He said aloud. "Do you know how rare that is for me?"
He nodded in agreement. "You felt so proud that people were drinking the sake you made, at the same time, you feel they didn't appreciate it."
"At times brat, having you linked to me like this isn't so bad, it saves a LOT of time explaining something…" he muttered.
Since that day, they haven't stopped brewing. Even the rice fields have gone insane with growth, but also, perhaps lady Tiamat is anticipating a good drink sooner than later. Either way, Toshi knew he couldn't refuse to help Sukuna, he did save his life after all.
But for nearly a month now, they have brewed, separated and tested different methods, naturally it all came ahead when Toshi got Nanami and Suguru to come to the brewery. "Don't tell me we are brewing sake?!" protested Geto. "Look I like to drink it, but making it…"
"No, we are here for something more delicate." Nanami sighed. "Just promise me…"
"Not as strong, I swear," Toshi stated.
"Huh?"
"We have been borrowing Nanami sensei to test the sake we have been brewing, at the same time, we feel we need one other opinion on the matter. Sukuna has watched who drinks and who doesn't. So, he saw you enjoy sake and knew you were the best one to ask for a second opinion."
Geto paused but then nodded in agreement to the notion. "Fair enough… but why did…"
"Sukuna gave him his strongest brew the last time, it knocked him out for a few days." Toshi explained.
"That strong? It would be difficult to make Sake strong enough to knock someone like Kento out…" Geto said curiously. "Hm, I may need a bit of that later. I could sleep for a few days myself…"
"Why? Aren't you training?" Nanami snapped back.
"All the more reason to knock my ass out!"
Toshi… didn't know what Geto was training himself on, but that's for another time.
They arrived at the brewery, and a table awaited them. There were fourteen bottles set up and arranged accordingly. Sukuna glared down the two and yet he nudged his head towards the chairs. "Sit, and honest opinion only, no sugar coating it."
Toshi kept near the back, he had a list of all their brews by numbers and what not. Believe it or not, they have been bringing Eso into this as of late. His rot technique can be used to speed up the fermentation of the rice. He has also refined his ability enough to encourage and create cultures. Recently, Eso has been into making yogurts and fermented drinks. Still, the talent itself cuts the whole process in half. Allowing them to make more sake and faster than before. Toshi has been trying his hand at it as well, but, it's nowhere near as powerful as Eso's ability.
Still, he did his job with great vigilance, making notes, picking up on the facial expression of Nanami and Geto. Geto was by far the easiest to read. Nanami… not so much. But he has settle clues that can give away his state of mind.
"Wow… this one is really good, I mean… REALLY good!" Geto raved as he sipped from bottle number 5.
Nanami, made an odd face. It was stunned and yet not revolted. Toshi also made note when it came to Nanami sensei, if he finished his drink, it was good, if he left it in the cup, there was improvements to be made. But his pallet was something neither Toshi or Sukuna could rival, at the same time, despite having a good sense of taste, neither one at the moment have any idea as to the alcohol content of their brews. He freely admits, sake doesn't make him drunk. In fact, despite all the booze he has drank with Sukuna… he hasn't been drunk… unless the drink was spiked.
"WHOOO!" shouted Suguru as he drank from bottle twelve. "*Cough, cough* Shit, that will strip paint!"
"Too strong?" Sukuna asked.
Nanami made a different face, that was his 'this is strong' face.
"The vapor alone warns you, it will knock you on your ass!" Suguru stated.
"And yet," came from Nanami. "Despite the slight burn after consuming, the flavor is still delicate and a good pleasant feel. If anything, if someone wishes to drink their sorrows away, this would be it."
A greedy grin came over Sukuna. "Toshi, we will call this one, drink away the memories."
"Or mind bleach." Muttered Suguru.
"You have not tact!" Sukuna snapped back. "Keep it up and I find a new taste tester."
Suguru instantly shut up.
They went on a few hours, writing down details and notes of flavor. When done, Sukuna sent them off before he stared at the bottles and began to think. "Are you seriously thinking about selling it?" Toshi asked offhandedly. "Its not like you need the money or anything…"
However, Sukuna was still silent on the matter. "We will sell, we will do small batches and make only so many a year, no more or less no matter the demand."
Toshi could only nod his head. "Something is bothering you, I feel regret and sorrow coming from your stomach."
"Tch, of course you would…" Sukuna then paused before stating. "I tried to take over Itadori's son. Before I made such an attempt, a monk from a temple here was killed and served to me as a meal before I was to take over the child…"
Toshi froze.
He felt that too, this wasn't a lie. "But…"
"I didn't keep it down, I tried to eat this monk, and yet not one piece of his flesh was able to stay down. I couldn't bring myself to do it… yet… ever since that day… I regretted what I did, that monk defended my name in front of me when I told him otherwise…"
Toshi realized the monk he spoke of was one who tended to his temples and worshiped him as a deity.
He began to see and notice the pattern. "So, you want profits to go to the temples?" he asked.
Sukuna paused as he peered at Toshi oddly. "Is that wrong?" he asked.
"No, just surprising. At the same time, I think we need to make a partial lie for this as well. People are going to want to know where this came from, right?"
Sukuna paused. "Tch, of course…"
Toshi paused oddly. "Perhaps, we might be able to get some assistance on the matter… if our profits got to help the temples, perhaps we should say the monks have brewed this themselves?"
"No," Sukuna said flat out. "It's against the monk's beliefs, alcohol is a vice and will prevent them to obtain enlightenment. It becomes a desire."
"There goes that idea…" Toshi muttered.
"Granted, some of different religions and branches did consume sake, those who didn't actually helped the process. But that was hundreds of years ago. I don't know what the humans believe or do now a days anyways. But the old man at the shop has offered to assist us."
Toshi… paused.
"What?"
"The old man at the sake shop, he has offered to help us distribute and sell. I have already taken him up on it, but I refuse to allow him to see our methods."
He forced a smile at that. "So, what do we name this brewery?"
"Kaiyo"
He didn't hesitate to speak such a name, but it's rather fitting. It means forgiveness in Japanese… he must have thought about it for some time, and yet…
"I like the name," Toshi said offhandedly.
"Good, I wasn't going to hear your suggestion anyway."
