Chapter 2- Christopher

Christopher and Lorelai enter the household laughing as they do.

"Anyone home?" Christopher asked Lorelai hopefully

"Doesn't look like it" she shrugged before yelling, "Mum, are you home?"

"What about your dad?"

"Away on business"

"And the maid?"

"Greata has Friday afternoons off"

"So, there's no one here whatsoever?"

"Apparently not"

"What to do?"

"Mojito?"

"Sounds good"

Lorelai makes the mojitos and brings them over to the sofa, handing one to Christopher.

"Thanks"

Lorelai places her drink on the table and collapses back into the sofa.

"You good?" Christopher asked

"I'm fine, glad schools are over but a week trapped here with them" she indicates behind her to the rest of the house with her head.

"It won't be that bad come on"

"It'll be terrible and you know it, especially with dad gone till Tuesday, I'll be in the spotlight"

"You don't need to worry about Emily, and don't let her make you feel any less perfect than you are"

Lorelai chuckled "thanks Chris"

"And we can go out, every day if you want to"

"Sounds good"

"I'm lucky, my parents were considerate enough to go away for the holidays"

"Oooo lucky you" she said in a mocking tone.

"Hey, it's going to be okay. It's only one week and you can always talk to me. Just give me a ring"

"Thanks Chris"

They looked deeply into each other's and Christopher leant in, Lorelai mirrored his movements. He placed his hand on her hip.

"Chris" Lorelai spoke soft and pleadingly

"Shhhhh"

Lorelai accepted Christopher's move, this felt right, it had been a long time coming, but now that it was here she didn't know what to think. Until the front door opened, and closed again. Lorelai leaped back from Christopher as the familiar voice rang in her ears.

"Lorelai, pick up your- Oh Christopher what are you doing here?"

"Mum! Chris was just, umm. Well he's here to uhhh" Lorelai looked for the right words to explain Christopher's presence but was struggling, all she could think of was what had just happened, hoping beyond belief that Emily was oblivious.

"Have a drink" Christopher said indicating the cocktails, "to celebrate the end of term"

'Oh crap' thought Lorelai as she realized that the drinks she probably shouldn't have were still sitting on the table.

"I see" said Emily looking at Lorelai with another one of her looks, knowing that there was something she wasn't being told, "well Christopher, did you want to stay for dinner?" She turned to look at him.

"No thank you, I had better get home"

"Of course, well I'm sure I'll see you soon"

Christopher picked up his bag and made for the door.

"By Lor, I'll call you later"

"Bye Chris"

Lorelai recalled on the sofa staring at the drinks, preparing for what was to come. Emily then escorted Christopher out of the house, turned on her heels and entered the living room.

"You better have a good explanation for this missy" Emily asked in her stern, condescending voice

"We were celebrating"

"My 14 year old had a boy in the house alone and was drinking alcohol. What were you thinking" Emily's voice rose as she grew more and more annoyed.

"We thought you would be home, and there's no alcohol in these"

"Don't you dare lie to my young lady"

"Mum, please"

"You knew, you knew you weren't allowed to do any of this but you did it anyway"

"It's not that big of a deal, we were just having a bit of fun, something you don't seem to understand"

"Don't you be smart with me"

"Oh my God, stop overreacting"

"Lorelai"

"mum please, calm down"

"I've had enough of you, go to your room!"

"Mummm, this is ridiculous"

"Oh so now I'm ridiculous am I?"

"Ugh" Lorelai marched upstairs

After clearing the drinks, Emily made her way upstairs to Lorelai's room, ready for a tantrum. She approached the door and knocked, "Lorelai, can you open the door please? '' she said, trying to sound as calm as she could, no response.

"Lorelai open the door, '' she said in a slightly more forceful tone.

"Now please" she began to feel more and more anger bubbling up inside her. She pushed the door but it didn't open. Ok now she was mad

"Lorelai, stop behaving like a child and open the door" this wasn't working, time to call in reinforcements.

"Open the door Lorelai or I'm calling your father, I wonder what he thinks about all this" Emily didn't want her husband to control her child, but if she couldn't get Lorelai out it meant she had won, and they certainly weren't having any of that.

"I'll give you five seconds to open this door before I call him" no response. Emily sighed and retreated from the door to call Richard.

Lorelai lay on her bed scribbling furiously into her diary. She was mad at Emily for interrupting her and Christopher, and for overreacting. And mad at Christopher for giving away that they were drinking. All she wanted to do was have a bit of fun in the house that didn't let her. What was the big deal? How was this fair, Christopher was allowed scotch and her other friends had their boyfriends over all the time. Why did she have to have such a strict and controlling mother? She looked up as Emily's frantic efforts to get in failed. She had pushed the dresser over the doorway to stop the intrusion.

Lorelai looked down at the notebook. It was the only Christmas present Emily had ever brought her that she actually used. Although she still knew it was a ruse so Emily could invade her privacy once again and see what was going on in her life, she still found it useful at times like these, though was sure to hide it in a place Emily would never find it.

Suddenly she heard Emily mention her father, she began to get nervous but then she remembered the many times Emily had threatened to involve him and didn't. When Emily left she closed the diary and grabbed one of her magazines from behind the bookshelf and settled down to read it without any more disruptions. This didn't last long though as very soon Emily was back at her door.

"Lorelai, I don't need you to open the door, just pick up the phone. Your father wants to speak with you"

'oh crap, oh crap, oh crap' Lorelai thought, turns out her mother had planned on following through for once.

"Lorelai you had better pick up that phone"

She reached out and placed the receiver to her ear, "hello?"

"Lorelai," her father's voice echoed down the phone, making Lorelai shudder as she anticipated what was about to come. "your mother tells me the two of you had a fight and now you've locked yourself in your room and refuse to come out, is that right?" His voice was laced with anger but he wasn't yelling at least. "Well? Did you?"

"Yes"

"Stop behaving like a child, doors weren't created to be locked, especially not in my house. So you will go and open it right now, or it comes off, do you understand me?"

"Yes dad"

"Good, now go. And don't you ever treat your mother like that again"

She placed the receiver back and looked up at her door. She knew her mother was behind it listening in. As she began to walk over to the door she remembered the magazine quickly going back to the bed and brushing them into a box and kicking it under the bed. Why hadn't Emily told her father about Chris, what was she up to this time, Lorelai thought as she walked over to the door and pushed the dresser out of the way, opening the door and coming face to face with Emily.

"Mother"

"Lorelai"

There was a pause Lorelai looked down at her feet mumbling, "Thank you. For not telling Dad"

"He didn't need to know. But I don't think you should talk to Christopher until he comes back from Turkey"

"What, why"

"And I want to know the whole truth about what's going on between you and Christopher"

"Mummm"

"As well as an apology please young lady"

"Come on"

"Don't wine, I can get your father on the phone right now"

So that was her angle, "okay okay" Emily continued staring at Lorelai expectantly "I'm sorry. Happy now" Lorelai didn't sound convincing but Emily knew that was the best she was going to get.

"I'll see you at dinner." Emily turned and left feeling rather pleased with herself.

Angry, Lorelai entered her room, slamming the door behind her. She walked over to the bed, grabbed the box and took out the diary, she placed a fake cover of moby dick over it and placed it on the bookshelf. She then slid the box under the dresser.

No sooner had Lorelai done this before the phone rang, she picked it up.

"Hello"

"Lor" the person on the other end sounded eager, "I need to talk you"

"Chris-"

"Lorelai?" Emily entered the call.

"Mum?"

"Emily" Christopher asked

"Christopher? What on earth is going on here?"

"Chris called me mum"

"Hang up the phone Lorelai, I need to have a word with Christopher"

"But mum"

"Lorelai"

"Okay" she hangs up, sighing in defeat. She lay back on her bed and closed her eyes. Lorelai couldn't help admiring her mother's manipulative skills; getting on her good side by not telling her father about Christopher, then making it so she couldn't say no to anything.

There was a knock on the door, "dinners ready Ms Gilmore" Lorelai got up, ready to face another painful meal.

"What did you say to Chris mum?" The two had been sitting at the table in silence for quite some time, neither being sure of how to broach a topic.

"What were you doing on the phone to him?"

"He called me mum"

"So he said"

"What did you say to him" Lorelai was getting desperate, she was terrified at what her mother could have said.

"This is really bothering you isn't it"

"Of course it is"

Emily smiled, "well then maybe I'll tell you next week"

"Muuum come on, tell me"

"No"

"Muuum"

"What's going on between the two of you anyway?"

"What do you mean mum?"

"Well you weren't sitting on the sofa singing nursery rhymes. You practically jumped out of his hands when I walked in."

"Nothings happening mum, we are friends that's all"

"I'm tired of you lying to me, I'm not naïve Lorelai, as your mother I feel I have a right to know"

Under her breath, "of course you do"

"what was that"

"nothing."

"well?"

"I don't know. It kinda just happened. I haven't had the chance to speak to him, or think about it"

"But do you like him?"

There was a pause

"maybe, just give me a chance, geez"

Emily beamed in a sinister way, "oh this is wonderful. Just marvelous" Lorelai looked down at her plate and then to her mother. She sighed, what had she done?

Later that night, Lorelai lay in bed, it was past midnight but she couldn't sleep. She kept thinking of Christopher, ugh if only she could talk to him, get his perspective on everything then maybe it would be different. As if a guardian angel had answered her prayers, there was a tap at the window of her balcony she turned to see Christopher crouched down. She smiled, jumped out of bed and clamored over to the window, opening it and climbing outside. "Chris-"

"Wait, Lor please, let me talk"

"Okay"

She looked at him and he looked at her. He sighed and took a deep breath "God, I had it all ready. I've been going over this conversation again and again. I rehearsed it a million times but now I'm standing here, looking at you and I don't know what to say. You see Lor, these past few weeks, I realized something. I realized I couldn't live my life without you. I realized your sense of humor, your personality, the way you look. It's perfect and I don't just like all of those. I love them. I love you, and not just as a friend. I love your hair and the way it bothers you, I love your slightly inappropriate jokes and the way you will say them no matter where we are or two we're with, I love your style, your sense of music, everything. You make me laugh, and you let me be me. I want to be more than friends, your the girl of my dreams and I love you, I don't think that'll ever change"

"Oh Chris, I love you too"

"you do?"

"Of course, you get me. Better than anyone else in the world. You understand"

He looked into her eyes and she into his. They lent in towards each other. As they did so snow gently drifted down from the sky, they kissed each other. Lorelai felt safe, happy. This was perfect.
