Chapter 5
Overlord's Dream
Naruto has waited long enough for the change to level up so he accepted the maid's offer.

Naruto sighs in relief that he levelled up for he missed the chance to do that before finishing off the Butterfly Effect Quest. But the downside of levelling up is that he must be asleep to enter the Overlord's Dream to make that happen.
He browses at his current stat until he noticed the number of insights he's now got. And while he's in a daze of shock, the grey cloudy sky of the dream suddenly darkens with the darkest of nights, then the full moon is replaced with a dark grey stone orb with glowing red tribal markings that pulses like calm heartbeats.
Naruto then suddenly hear silent whispering in his ear when his eyes are fixed to the orb, the vessel of Yami while it starts to open and spew out a miasma of pure darkness. The whispering gets a bit louder in Naruto's ears, now audible when a woman's voice repeats the same swords over and over, at first it was too fast and scrambled, but the more he hears them the clearer they become.
"No time for dreams, My Champion. It's time to wake up".
Naruto instantly vanished from the dream, which is convenient when the Old Man returns when he slowly approached the mansion and was later greeted by the maid.
"Welcome back, sir. How was your trip?"
"It was fair and enlightening" said the Old Man as he heads for the bench by the porch. "Though I hope I didn't have to travel much to see them."
"They did prefer their ideal resting places, not the kind to rest in paradise" said the Maid "Like you for example."
"That was a long time ago, I am but an old man, forgotten by my peers and the memory scattered by those with a grudge."
"I pray to Yami for your restored memory, sir" said Maid
"You are kind, girl" said the Old man
"Well…I was created for kindness" said the maid with a smile on her face.
Compa's Clinic: Upper Ward
Naruto suddenly rise and awake, he looks around to see that he dressed in a sleeping gown and under the warm covers in bed. The ceiling is dull, the faint warm candlelight barely illuminates the room. The Overlord is confused at when he also noticed to other 3 other people sleeping in their own bed. One with messy light brown hair who is his wrist hooked up to an IV bag containing strange blue liquid. Naruto knows who this person is, the gamer he met at New Yharnem's Great Bridge.
"ZZZzzz"
Naruto turns to after hearing snoring coming from a middle-aged man with messy grey hair, goatee and eyes covered in rags. And lastly the sound of stirred muttering coming from the last sleeping person with black hair and bandaged moderately. Judging by condition these people are, Naruto groans as he hated the answer.
"Please tell me this isn't a hospital".
"Close, you're in a clinic" said a voice who is familiar to Naruto as he turns to the doorway. A young woman with cream pink hair and eyes, dressed in white with cream accents enters through the doorway with a lantern in hand while pushing a trolly containing medicines, bandages and other tools used by doctors. "I see that you're up, Naruto-kun."
"Compa?" said Naruto in shock, but a smile immediately appeared on his face as he is glad to see a familiar face. "Tell me I'm not dreaming".
"No, I am indeed here, and in my clinic in Central Yharnem" said Compa as she approached Naruto's bed and starts lighting up the lamp on the beside table with her lantern. "Apologise for the crude interior of this place, the clinic was built this way to fit in with New Yharnem's gothic style."
"Wouldn't they add in some electrical lights?" said Naruto
"That requires a power plant to feed power to the city, and New Yharnem was only built a few months ago." Said Compa after lighting up the lamp. "Right now, we only have gas, oil or candles."
"A few months, that's what the Remnants took to build this city, wow I am impressed." Said Naruto "I was expecting a few houses and a dirt road."
"True, but with the wonders of builder-class Gamers, it can take a matter of days to build a city, and a few days it took for New Yharnem" said Compa as she then starts to give Naruto his check-up.
"So, when did you open your clinic?" said Naruto
"Surprisingly after our battle against Fugaku in the Fire Temple, the flows of time have altered the timeline but kept your past intact."
"So, my timeline remains while other timelines differ…uh, now I've got a headache."
"Here, take this and don't think about it, okay" said Compa giving Naruto some aspirin and a glass of water. "Overthinking it doesn't help…believe me."
"Thanks" said Naruto taking the pills and drinking the water. "So, I reckon Karin and IF are in the clinic also?"
"Only Karin, IF didn't want to settle in New Yharnem, though she was considering it once her adventures are done." Said Compa with a sad smile as her friend didn't want to live in New Yharnem. "But she does contact me most of the time, telling me what she's been doing, so we both keep in touch."
"That's good, you could tell her that I returned when both of you do hook up later" said Naruto.
Compa only smiled with that idea while she continues with Naruto's check-up, after 15 minutes she is happy with the results and discharged Naruto. Naruto gets himself dressed in his gear after Compa returned them to him. Finishing off with putting his coat, tricorne hat and lastly his Gauntlet which the jewels shine in multi-colour which also called a few minions to emerge from the floor.
"Mastah!"
The minions bow to their master before Naruto dismisses them back into the floor. Suddenly stirring is heard from one of the beds and Father Gascoigne wakes up with a long yawn.
"Praise Yami I needed that!" said Father Gascoigne as he stretches his arms while waking up. He sits up for a moment and smiles, he may not see due to his blindness, but he can sense the presence of the Overlord. "Ah, you're awake also."
"Father Gascoigne, I presume" said Naruto
"Indeed, appointed head of the Cathedral of Yami and veteran Gamer at your service" said Father Gascoigne.
Lower Floor
Naruto and Father Gascoigne climbed down the stairs after both are fully dressed.
"Has Iruka explained everything to you?" said Father Gascoigne
"Hai, Cathedral Ward is in lockdown and you know a way for me to get through the barrier." Said Naruto
"That's right, but I must warn you, going through there will not be easy" said Father Gascoigne
"What else is new?" said Naruto with a deadpan expression hidden behind his shades and mask.
Naruto and Father Gascoigne are now at the lower floor, waiting for them are Compa with her 2 staff.
"Ah, you're finally up" said Compa as she approached the Overlord and the Father. She gives Naruto his Blood Estus Flask. "Here, I refilled the flask for you on your journey".
"Thank you" said Naruto as obtains his Blood Estus Flask.
"Well, I can't take all the credit, Karin-chan here helped" said Compa while Karin rushed to give Naruto a hug. Naruto smiled and returned the hug from his "Otome" after being a part of so long.
"Then I must thank you as well, Karin-chan" said Naruto
"I wish I could come, but I must help Kaa-san here in the clinic" said Karin "Besides, I don't think I'll be able to get through the barrier around Catherdral Ward."
"I'm afraid not, Karin" said Father Gascoigne "Only members of the Yami Cathedral and with higher authority can go through the barrier."
"And Darkborne here has higher authority, correct?" said Karin
"The highest" said Father Gascoigne
"Just show him the way through the barrier and go home" said Compa with a concerned frown. "You should be resting and return to your wife and daughter."
"As much as I wanted that, I cannot for I have a duty as Father of the Catherdral" said Father Gascoigne "The enemy has infiltrated holy grounds and I must defend it."
"Leave that for Vicar Amelia, go home" said Compa "Please go home, Viola will be worried sick right about now."
"Viola will understand if the Overlord is involved" said Father Gascoigne "And I can't shirk my duty as head of the church of Yami in its time of need."
Father Gascoigne sighs as he turns his blindfolded eyes away and 'stare' at the view of the cathedral out the clinic window.
"Besides, I've not heard anything from Amelia and that worries me" said Father Gascoigne "I must help the Overlord."
Compa wanted to protest…but knowing how stubborn Father Gascoigne is, she sighs in defeat.
"Just don't over do it, I do NOT want to see you in my clinic close to death, got it?" said Compa
"Got it" said Father Gascoigne.
"Naruto, please make sure that Father Gascoigne doesn't do anything reckless, he's not a young man anymore and needs to take it easy."
"Err..sure" said Naruto shrugging his shoulders before turning to the Father. "Alright, Father. Lead on"
Father Gascoigne has joined the Party
"Right, follow me" said Father Gascoigne as he leaves the clinic first.
Central Yharnem
Now that the Night of the Hunt event is over, all is calm in the streets of Central Yharnem, the Gamers who made the night heads home for a good night's sleep, also it is too early for the town to be fully awaken of those who did not partake the event.
Those who fell in the event, they'll respawn back to their houses and endure immense pain, like dealing with a hangover after being drunk on a night out.
"So how long did this issue start at Catherdral Ward?" said Naruto
"Not long, it's was just yesterday before the Remnants activated the Night of the Hunt Event and put Catherdral Ward on lockdown. It was during my mandated holidays and I left Vicar Amelia in charge until my break is over. Which is rather convenient, or an opportunity for the cult to strike."
"How so?" said Naruto
"This was not the first time the Cult tried to intercept the cathedral" said Father Gascoigne. "Anekomyosei has been sending in his acolytes discreetly, all fell by my axe and beastly claws. But now…it seems me being relieved of duty is the change they needed, and it worked".
"What is this mandated holiday?"
"Members of the Church of Yami are obligated to have time off for 2 weeks every year." Said Father Gascoigne "and since I barely go home and work nearly all day, everyone started to notice the sighs of fatigue on my person. And by orders of both the Head Remnant and Compa, I was relieved of duty until my holiday is up. They were foolish to do that, I cannot leave the cathedral unguarded while other clerics within the ward are still inexperienced due to New Yharnem recently built."
"I must say you are very dedicated in your duties, Father" said Naruto "But I must agree with Iruka and Compa on that, you're overdoing it and there is so much one person can do at once."
Father Gascoigne sighs at this while taking off his hat so he can wipe the sweat of his forehead and brush a few strands of his grey hair away from his face.
"I know, but I can't help being stubborn, its who I am" said Father Gascoigne before putting his hat back on. "But I promise this, after we deal with this problem within Cathedral Ward, I resume my mandate holiday and spend plenty of time with my daughter and wife."
Cemetery
Naruto and Father Gascoigne returned to the cemetery, the fog has slightly lifted and some of the sunlight has brighten this gloomy place. Passing the tombstones they had for the flight of stairs heading up to a pair of large iron gates overseeing the cemetery.
"There, these gates will take us to the chapel located deep within the centre of Catherdral Ward." Said Father Gascoigne pointing at the gates, despite being blind he is well aware of every nook and cranny in and out of Cathedral Ward.
Naruto looks up at the iron gates, which has a faint shimmer shrouding it. He reaches out to the gates but pulls it away with the barrier shocks him, Father Gascoigne chuckles at this while shaking his head.
"If it were that easy, you wouldn't have needed me to open the gate" said Father Gascoigne as he rummages through his coat pocket. He pulls out a key and approaches the gate. "Excuse me"
Naruto moved away for the Blind Father to unlock the gate.
"The Acolytes aren't aware of this gate here, even when it's there in plain sight." Said Father Gascoigne
"What's on the other side?" said Naruto
"The mortuary, where we keep the dead and prepare them for their burial" said Father Gascoigne
"Aren't Gamer's difficult to die, even in defeat?" said Naruto
"True but we aren't immortal, if that true then your predecessors would still be alive" said Father Gascoigne "Gamers remain alive until it is time for them to leave their mortal coil, that's when the Shinigami comes."
"Shinigami?" said Naruto
"Oh you know, Reapers of souls, death personified" said Father Gascoigne "Normally they come to guide souls in-discriminatingly until they founded their so-called society 1000 years ago. Now they are pompous, arrogant, and self-centred. Only to take souls who they deem worthy, while leave us to be hunted or become hollow."
"Hollow?" said Naruto
"Void of life, void of humanity, forever suffer with their own grief and sins within Limbo." Said Father Gascoigne "It's pains me for I can occasionally hear their cries, and their hunger"
"Hunger?" said Naruto
"When their Souls become Hollow, they cannibalize on other souls so full their own void, but only to delay the inevitable. They are left abandoned by those who meant to pass them on."
"I maybe evil, but that is despicable" said Naruto with a frown. "I wouldn't abandon souls, I use them to create my minions to fight, so in a way their astral purpose has meaning."
"I agree" said Father Gascoigne
Cathedral Ward: Chapel
Naruto and Father Gascoigne are now within Catherdral Ward via through the cemetery's mortuary, they walk through an office with bookshelves containing ledgers containing records of the deceased. There they climbed up more stairs when they reached a chapel, one of the places for Yami's Dark Clerics can worship her and her Hearts should the Cathedral be closed.
But now it is used as a shelter for the crowd to hide from the fighting happening outside. These people if you want to call them are a sad lot, shells of their former selves as they devote themselves to the Dark Goddess. Shrivelled up husks and nearly mummified, covered in dark ragged cowls with their heads covered in hoods, and on their backs hard shells chained around their chests which forced them in hunch back postures. They all hold wooden staves with iron rings on the top, nearly imitating shakujo staffs used by Buddhist monks.
"Ah, Father Gascoigne" said one of the hooded ones as he slowly approach the blind father. "It does please us to see that you're well and fair"
"Please be at ease, my brothers, I was waiting for our salvation against those who dare desecrate the hold grounds" said Father Gascoigne "Lo, and behold to your Lord and Master."
Every hooded ones gasp as they saw Naruto and all starts to kneel before him, and once kneeled their lower their heads while holding on their ringed staves which shake due to them struggling to keep hold, their shells are heavy, but they must have them on to show their devotion to Yami.
"Please rise, save your praises once victory is assured" said Naruto before he turns to Father Gascoigne. "Are these the Dark Clerics?"
"No, they are pilgrims of the Dark" said Father Gascoigne "They wander in the night to sing their praise to their Goddess throughout the world. Their presence in towns are seen as bad omens about a great evil that will plague the lands and conquer all. Evil such as you, O Champion of Yami"
Naruto chuckles at this and looks over at these pilgrims, their gloomy appearance is convincing enough to spread doom and despair.
"are they often harassed by the Censored Justice and those who see then as easy prey."
"If they die, they die for Yami" said Father Gascoigne "But they're not fighters, that's the job for the Dark Clerics."
"And where are the Clerics?" said Naruto
"Outside fighting the acolytes who serve the Demon Prince, my Lord" said one of the hooded pilgrims. "The Clerics has ordered us to remain in the chapel until they dispose of the heathen acolytes."
"But from what we heard, the fighting is now against their favour, when gargoyles reanimating from their stone perches now attack the Clerics and the Remnants aiding them."
"And what of the Hearts?" said Naruto "Surely they'd help fight against the acolytes"
"Last thing we heard is that they breached through the cathedral to liberate it, but we heard nothing."
"Something must be wrong if we heard nothing from the Hearts of Yami"
Naruto frowned at this and signed.
"If no word from the Heart have reached then something is indeed wrong. So that's why Yami sent be here so early" said Naruto to himself before heading for the chapel door. "Then I must help them then."
"May Yami guide you, Darkborne-sama" said the Pilgrims. "And embrace her darkness"
"After this, I think she's planning to do so regardless" said Naruto in mutters. He opens the door so that he and Father Gascoigne can leave the chapel and march into battle.
Cathedral Ward
Naruto and Father Gascoigneleft the chapel and are out on the streets within Cathedral Ward. For now, it is quiet, but that's just the calm before the storm for Naruto, for he sense the murderous intent in the air, so much it completely pollute the air with its Intoxication. Naruto draws out his Saw Cleaver out from his inventory and slowly wanders across the street with constant vigilance.
"It's too quiet" said Naruto frowning behind his shades. Silence is never a good sign when entering a hostile environment.
"The fighting's mostly near the cathedral uphill" said Father Gascoigne as he points at the cathedral. "If we head up, we'll definitely get into the crossfire."
"Well what are we waiting for?" said Naruto as he heads for the cathedral.
He continues to walk across many paths, crossing through gates, climbing up many stairs, and yet all is calm and quiet within Cathedral Ward. But Naruto remains on alert, just because the streets are void and quiet doesn't mean that there isn't any danger, not then the air is thick with killer intent mixed with the metallic stench of blood.
Finally signs of macabre is on sight, blood splatters on the walls and windows, no bodies sighted for they do not stay long after their deaths, only small bags are left by the blood, items dropped by those who are defeated. Naruto picks one up and opens it.

"Oh, you found some bullets" said Father Gascoigne as he stands by the Overlord. "You never forget the smell of quicksilver and gunpowder, but they're useless without the proper firearm. Here."
Father Gascoigne pulls out an old flintlock pistol from inside his coat pocket and gives it to Naruto
Hunter's Pistol: obtained
Naruto took the firearm and starts to load it with a quicksilver bullet before stuffing it in his pocket, his gear lacks the holster to hold the firearm, so he'll have to us his coat pocket for now. He noticed more item drops littered on the floor but he doesn't stop to gather then, instead he raise his gauntlet to summon his browns so they can gather the item drops back to the tower for him.
Naruto continued to wander more around the streets until suddenly the sound of battle reached his and Father Gascoigne's ears. He rushes to the source while the Father follows. The sounds of battle get louder and louder when the Overlord draws nearer toward the source.
Suddenly Naruto stopped when something swooped past from above, Naruto looks up on the rooftops while tightening his grip on the Saw Cleaver. Father Gascoigne slowly expands the handle of his axe until it's now a halberd. Both slowly resume their trek towards the cathedral when suddenly another swooping shadow passes by from above.
The sound of battle is now louder, following struggling grunts from both male and female. Naruto wasted no time as he heads for the source, reaching the end of the street, he now enters an open square with a decorative fountain ordained with winged demonesses with curled horns, all holding the top bowl while sitting between the lower bowl, letting the water to spill out like an endless waterfall.
But unfortunately, the fountain suddenly implodes when something massive crashes into it and half buried in the wet rubble. It didn't last long though when the rubble shakes and said thing emerges. It looks like a person made of stone, with pointed ears, short horns and a pair of avian wings. Its eyes glow orange and flicker like flames on a candle, it wields a rapier-like weapon that's fused in its forever closed hand.
Gargoyles
Description: Reanimated statues once adorned on their stone perches up high on the cathedral roof. But now they are used to attack anyone who gets near the cathedral and aid their new masters, the Acolytes of the Demon Prince.
Be at constant alert on these stone fiends, for they can mimic as inactive gargoyles perched on the roofs within cathedral ward and ambush you.
The gargoyle doesn't notice Naruto or Father Gascoigne as its more focused on 2 figures in dark armour. The 4th Remnant Yugao and the 5th Remnant Hayate are both back to back as they are surrounded by a hoard of other gargoyles which are leering at them from up roofs and down to the stone brick roads.
The 2 Remnants are panting behind their iron visors, signs of fatigue is showing for they've been fighting against the invasive forces within the sealed up section of the city for almost a day, and now they have to deal with reanimated gargoyles, which the acolytes brought to life thanks to their own magic given to them by the Demon Prince.
"Heh, does this remind you of something?" said Hayate.
"Everbright, we were surrounded by an elven ambush" said Yugao "that was supposed to be our date trip."
"We still had fun" said Hayate
"Hai, until your cough came back" said Yugao
"that cough wasn't cased by a returned illness, they used toxic smoke bombs." Said Hayate
"Which left you bedridden for days"
"Oh, you loved it when you're nursing me back to health" said Hayate with a smirk. "especially when you wore that cute nurse outfit."
"…I hate you." Said Yugao with a blush, luckily it was hidden by her helmet.
Hayate chuckles before returning his focus on the gargoyles.
"Listen, if we don't survive this." Said Hayate
"Don't"
"Huh?"
"Don't say anything, I rather not hear your last words" said Yugao "Just fight and pray we survive this with our dignities intact."
"…Hai" said Hayate "Dying in defeat would be a great shame to us servants of our new master."
Then the Gargoyles finally noticed Naruto and starts to turn and hiss at this, this got the 2 remnants' attention and turns to see the Overlord.
Naruto said nothing but only walk towards Yugao and Hayate so he can assist him. Father Gascoigne joins him with his halberd in hand while pulling out his pistol.
"Hey there, mind if we tag along" said Naruto

"Darkborrne-sama" said Yugao "Thank Yami you're here"
"Thank her later once we liberate Cathedral Ward" said Naruto as he unhing his weapon into a cleaver while pulling out his new hunter's pistol. "But first we need to break these ugly bastards into rubble."
Meanwhile in the Cathedral
Inside the main foyer of the cathedral, no lights are on to illuminate the area, leaving it to bask in Darkness. A lone figure stands in front of the desecrated altar while turning his back to the column of wooden pews, each vacant and void of anyone sitting. He looks up at the row of 4 long stained-glass windows, each illustrated with the Hearts of Yami in their CPU forms, hovering in the air while holding a heart bearing their represented colours. The figure leers at the sight as it disgusts him and turns away to stare at the empty pews.
"To think that Yami still has some followers left, and they have 'her' hidden right here in this new cathedral." Suddenly sunlight beans through the windows and shines upon the figure, revealing to be none other than Akenomyosei, the Demon Prince himself. "Oh tou-san, you thought I wouldn't know, but I did my research."
Akenomyosei pulls out a what appears to be one of the fourth's armour and places it on the shaded altar.
"At first, I was believed to be the son of that huntress you were so fond of, but you had other beauties that caught your eye to add in your harem. But I learned the truth of my REAL mother, the reason I am called Akenomyosei."
"Your majesty!"
Akenomyosei turns when one of his acolytes enters the foyer and approach him, only to help when he's 3 metres apart and lows to a kneeling bow.
"Have you found it?" said Akenomyosei
"Hai, it is as you predicted, my liege" said the acolyte. "The devourer…is sealed here."

Weapon: Sting
Description: An ancient Elven Short sword made of an alloy that glows blue when evil creatures are close, like an early warning before an attack is made by the enemy. This weapon has been passed down from many generations of Halfling Heroes, down from a Halfling Thief who travelled with a Dwarf Prince, to a Halfling hero who ventured through various dangers to destroy an object of pure evil. Any Halfling who possess this legendary sword is forever branded as a legend and a hero to his/her people.
• Bonus Perk: Glowing blade (Long-range enemy presence)
Uchiha Katana
A Katana used by the Uchiha clansmen, forged and treated to be stronger than any blade, such like the Uchiha. Ha, such arrogance, but this weapon is indeed strong and will eventually drink in the blood of Uchihas.
• Bonus Perk: Sharp (Can cause Bleed)
Demon's Scar
Description: A blade made of entirely out of flames. This chaotic thing, the last flame kindled by a demon prince, is shaped like the claw marks of a demon. It is both a fiery bladed weapon, and pyromaniac flame.
Added Skill: Spin Slash – Spin to stoke a fierce chaos flame and use momentum to transition into a spinning strong attack, creating an evanescent lava chamber.
Saw Cleaver
Description: One of the trick weapons of the workshop, commonly used in the hunting business. This saw, effective at drawing the blood of beasts, transforms into a long cleaver that makes use of centrifugal force. The saw, with its set of blood-letting teeth, has become a symbol of the hunt, and only grows in effectiveness the more grotesquely transformed the beast.
• Note: Only used in Darkborne Form
Hunter's Pistol
Description: Firearm originated in New Yharmen, given to you by Father Gascoigne.
Censor Blade
Description: A weapon used by one of the Censored Justice's elite knights. This one was owned by Fugaku Uchiha before his timely defeat against the Gamer named Darkborne.
• Bonus Perk: Censorship: Temporally disables skills and abilities.
Astor's Spear
Description: One of the curses that festered within the belly of the Great wood, and a terrible weapon favoured by Earl Astor the Impaler.
• Poisoned Blade: The Spear is enwreathed in rotten, heavily poisoned meat. Defeating foes will restore HP
• Shield Splitter: Take a large step forward and make a single focused thrust to puncture enemy shields and inflict damage.
Damnation
Description: The sword of Yami in her personal form and can only be wielded by the champion of Yami from Planeptune.
• Note: Only used with Susanoo
Abyss Great-sword
Description: A Great-sword formerly used by Artorias the Abysswalker, tainted by the darkness of the Abyss and blood of many fallen foes.
• Bonus Perk: Dark Spell Boost
• Note: Only used in Abysswalker form.
