"Rise and shine, ladies! It's Christmas morning!"
Kurumu groaned at the energetic greeting as curtains were thrown back, flooding the room with light. She squeezed the breasts of her chilly companion as her eyes fluttered open. Her left hand was tingling from being trapped beneath Mizore's torso.
"It's almost eight, Yukari. Breakfast is ready!"
Kurumu nuzzled her cheek against the pillow, feeling Mizore's nipples harden through the corduroy fabric of a racerback top between Kurumu's fingers. The drowsy girl pushed her rump against Kurumu, making Kurumu aware of her need for a toilet.
Unable to endure that butt wiggle, Kurumu released Mizore's right tit and scooted away. As Kurumu freed her other arm, Mizore rolled into Kurumu with eyes fluttering open. The snow girl had slept in black cargo shorts which were made from a thick, abrasive fabric. The laundry tag claimed that was cotton but the fabric was not like the gray shorts Kurumu had on.
Kurumu yawned as she sat up, stretching her arms overhead. Her breasts pushed against the confines of her black tank top as she took in the emptiness of this room. The pastel pink walls had white curtains flanking the white framed windows. It was larger than the room they had slept in at Aserutani.
Mrs. Sendou clapped her hands firmly, drawing Kurumu's attention to the open door. The mother's shoulder length dark tresses brushed upon a red, green and white sweater with the design of a present laden sleigh being drawn by four reindeer. The hem of the sweater was drawn over a pair or black jeans.
"Downstairs, ladies. We have a long day ahead of us."
Rubi was first to stagger upright. The witch covered her yawn as she stumbled towards the door. She was garbed in only a long, white shirt which ended halfway down her thighs. Rubi had not been wearing that when Yukari had made the gateway from Mononoke to Yukari's room.
"Hold up, Ms. Toujou. While the other girls can get away with what they are wearing, you need to get dressed. I can't have you walking about the house in just a shirt."
Rubi yawned again, drawing her shirt up to reveal a pair of white briefs.
"Wearing panties."
"Didn't you bring some jeans or shorts?"
Rubi yawned another with a nod. As she sauntered over to a plastic bag in the corner of this vacant room, Kurumu stood up with a yawn of her own.
"Is this Yukari's room?"
"Yes, Ms. Kurono. We had to carry you and Yukari through that gateway of hers when we sensed the connection. We should power up that spell for you when you return to Mononoke or you ladies won't be in any condition to do anything tonight."
"Why is it so empty?"
"Because most of my stuff is on campus."
Yukari huffed, getting to her feet. She was wearing that yellow tank top with the strawberry pattern and matching sleep pants. The witch gestured at a door near Rubi whom had discarded her top.
"I have some older clothes and toys in my closet but nothing of importance is here."
"What a terrible thing to say about your parents."
Yukari rolled her eyes at her mother's grin.
"When is Grandpa going to be here?"
"Around lunch. Mr. Hakuru will also be joining us."
"Merry Christmas."
Kurumu giggled at Mizore's groggy greeting. Her purple hair was a wild mess.
"Merry Christmas, Mizore."
"I have to pee."
Kurumu smirked, also feeling that urgency. She held her hand out to the snow girl.
"Me too. I'll let you go first."
"We'll be in the dining room, ladies. Come down when you're ready."
Kurumu sounded an affirmative as Mizore took her hand. She helped the snow girl up as Mrs. Sendou steered Yukari out of the room.
"Should we put up the futons?"
"You can. I go pee."
Kurumu chuckled, kneeling down to roll up their futon as they snow girl shuffled out of the room. Rubi was wiggling into a pair of black jeans with a black tube top holding her bosom in check.
"Rubi. Where do I put the futons?"
"In the closet."
Kurumu nodded, gathering up the futon in her arms before she got back up on her feet. She stumbled over to the door which Rubi thankfully opened for her. She waddled into the dark space, noting several shirts and blouses hanging from the rack. Some of it looked like it would not even fit an eight year old.
Kurumu lifted up on her toes to place the futon on a vacant shelf. She sashayed out of the closet, smiling as Rubi started rolling up the other futon.
"Where is the bathroom?"
"First door on the right."
Kurumu nodded as the witch continued with her chore. Rubi's purse was next to that plastic bag she had fetched her clothes from. So was Kurumu's purse and Yukari's yellow tote. Since they were not spending the night, most of them had not bothered bringing a change of clothes.
Kurumu slipped out of the bedroom into a hallway which was lined with doors. There were two doors on the left and two more doors on the right. The corridor turned into a stairway after the last set of doors.
Kurumu knocked on the first door on her right, grabbing the brass knob and twisting it. She pushed the door open, stepping into the room. Mizore was seated on the toilet with her shorts and a pair of pink and white panties around her ankles. Kurumu smiled, closing the door of this white tiled room.
"How are you feeling?"
Mizore grunted, tearing off a few squares of toilet paper from the roll held on a bar mounted to the side of the counter. She reached between her legs, dabbing herself.
"Tired. Bloated."
"Did you and Rubi stay up last night?"
"I turned in after we got the futons out. No idea how long she stayed up."
The counter by the toilet had a sink with a mirror mounted to the wall over it. On the other side of the toilet were drain tiles for the tub which spanned the width of this room. Across from the toilet was an open door for another bedroom. A canopy bed stood in the center of the far wall with crimson lace dangling from ivory framing. Beside the bedroom door were shelves stacked with bathing supplies.
The toilet flushed and Mizore stood up while drawing her striped panties up over her trimmed hairs. She shuffled aside, tugging her shorts up.
Kurumu took the invitation, stepping over to the toilet and turning about. She pulled her shorts down as she parked her butt on the seat. She sighed in relief as she relaxed her bladder, filling the room with the sound of running water.
"Do you think Aoi is having a good Christmas?"
Kurumu breathed in deep as the flow diminished to a trickle. She smiled at Mizore.
"Hopefully. I want Nijiro to have a good day."
"Yea. I hope my family is having a good day too."
Kurumu nodded, tearing off a couple of toilet paper squares to dab herself with. She flushed the toilet and hopped up, pulling her shorts back in place. Offering Mizore a grin, she took the snow girl by the hand and headed for the door. Tugging the door open, they slipped out into the hallway. In seconds they were descending the stairs.
At the bottom of the first flight was a long landing with a window. The view of the forest made Kurumu think about that log cabin her mother had acquired near Hekitawa. They walked along the landing and turned down another flight of stairs along an exterior wall. Another window looking out at the woods to the right of them perpetuated the feeling that this home was out in the middle of the wilderness.
They reached the bottom of the stairs, walking out into a large, open room. Along the wall between the two windows was an entertainment center made from polished dark sepia wood. Nestled in the center compartment was a huge, silver trimmed television. The glass doors of the side compartments revealed that these compartments were empty.
Facing the entertainment center was a couch and two matching armchairs. The dingy, white cushions betrayed years of use. Two small tables with lamps plugged into floor outlets stood by each armchair.
In the far right corner of this room was a tree decorated with silver tinsel and colored lights. Kurumu paused for a moment which caused Mizore to make an inquisitive sound. Kurumu gestured at the tree, realizing it was not a real one. Beneath the tree were several packages wrapped in colorful paper.
"I didn't think her parents would make a big deal out of Christmas."
"She is an only child."
Kurumu wondered what that had to do with anything as they drifted to the center of the room behind the couch. There was a recessed area before a double door with shelving and hooks on the nearby wall for shoes and coats. Along that wall was a double door.
"In here, ladies."
Kurumu smiled, looking through an opening to their left. At the head of the table was Mr. Sendou. He was garbed in a black sweater with his wife beckoning to them from her seat on his right. Rectangular glasses rested upon his nose above a thick moustache. Yukari sat to the left of the sandy blond haired father with Rubi seated beside her.
Letting go of Mizore's hand, Kurumu wandered into the dining room. The table was a dark mahogany hue with eight chairs surrounding it. The matching mahogany chairs had faded black cushions embedded into their square backs and seats. Meals had been set out in front of the last vacant spot on Yukari's side while the other was next to Mrs. Sendou. Kurumu drifted over to the mother's side of the table.
Scooting the chair out, Kurumu noticed an opening for the kitchen on her left. Murmuring her thanks, she sat down at the table while Mizore claimed the spot beside Rubi. These plates had large servings of okayu and four tamagoyaki rolls. Kurumu picked up her chopsticks, gesturing at the television.
"I thought you didn't own a television."
"That's my dad trying to bribe me."
Mr. Sendou huffed, pushing aside his empty plate.
"I can give you anything those vampires can."
"And some things are best given by people whom aren't your parents."
"That is a Sony KDLV40XBR1 LCD flat screen. It's the best television on the market."
"And that along with that fancy stand he put it on cost us a whole million yen."
"No cost is too high when it comes to the happiness of my daughter."
Yukari snickered with a shake of her head as she picked up another of her tamagoyaki rolls.
"It's worthless. You don't have anything to watch on that television."
Kurumu swallowed down half of a tamagoyaki roll, closing her eyes to savor the taste.
"So good. Did you teach Yukari how to cook?"
"No. My little girl taught herself."
Kurumu breathed in deep with a smile. She glanced at the overhead lighting.
"It's a little surprising to see that you have indoor plumbing and electricity."
Mr. Sendou huffed, picking up his black porcelain tumbler.
"Those systems are not difficult to implement when you know how they work."
Kurumu nodded thoughtfully, chewing down the other half of her tamagoyaki.
"How far away are you from the high school you work at?"
"It's a forty minute drive."
"You have a car?"
"It would be suspicious for us to not have one. My coworkers are aware that we live up in the mountains. They just aren't aware how far we live from the parking lot where we leave our car."
Kurumu was about to ask how far that was when she remembered that these two were witches. They could teleport so the distance was meaningless. She picked up another tamagoyaki.
"Yukari said that you didn't have phone service here but do you have cell phone service?"
"I would not know, Ms. Kurono."
"Who do you intend to call?"
Kurumu stuffed her mouth with the whole roll, making herself unable to answer Yukari's query. She took her time to chew the morsel into little juicy bits before swallowing.
"I have a few people I want to try. Kabuki, Kokoa, Tora and Ms. Kiyoshi."
"I don't know if you can reach Kokoa or Tora. They're both behind barriers."
"I thought your spell only had an issue with the barrier about Mononoke."
"It should penetrate barriers that only misdirect like the one around the Huang family mansion. But I've never been inside Aserutani's barrier to say if my spell could work."
"Aserutani is in the spiritual plane, honey."
"Then no. The spell can't cross dimensions. You won't reach Tora. And the same goes for Kokoa if she's in Iromori. It might work if she's at the Shuzen Estate, since Lady Chuujitsu made that barrier different."
Kurumu sighed, feeling disappointed as she swallowed down the remnants of her tamagoyaki.
"I guess calling Tora isn't crucial."
"You could leave her a message with the actual cell phone service. It is Christmas. She might leave the barrier to call her parents."
"She probably did that yesterday."
"New Year's is next week. Leave her a message and she'll get it when she leaves again."
Kurumu nodded, stuffing her mouth with her last tamagoyaki. She chewed slowly, enjoying the flavor.
"I would suggest calling in the afternoon. Most people will be busy with family in the morning."
Kurumu swallowed down her last tamagoyaki, trading her chopsticks for the spoon.
"I didn't expect to see rice porridge on the breakfast menu."
"I wanted to be mindful of Ms. Shirayuki's condition."
"That doesn't mean you had to serve it to everyone."
Mrs. Sendou smiled at her daughter whom pushed aside her empty plate.
"You've always liked sweet things. I'm going to make that strawberry cake you love for lunch."
Yukari's eyes brightened up but she quickly looked aside.
"Too much sweets isn't healthy."
"It's Christmas. We always have that cake."
"I didn't say I didn't want it."
Mrs. Sendou giggled, glancing at her husband.
"Should we tell her now?"
"Now? Before presents?"
"Tell me what?"
Mrs. Sendou grinned at her confused and concerned daughter.
"The doctor confirmed it this Tuesday but it felt wrong to tell you over the phone. I'm pregnant."
Yukari stared in shock as Mizore calmly continued her meal as if nothing important had been announced. Kurumu swallowed down her rice porridge with a cough.
"How far along?"
"Not long, Ms. Kurono. I missed my period earlier this month. I was actually worried about menopause."
"You're too young for that."
Mrs. Sendou pouted at her husband.
"I still worried."
"Congratulations, Mrs. Sendou. Mr. Sendou."
Kurumu echoed Rubi's sentiments though her attention remained upon Yukari. The girl's lips trembled as a tear started down her cheek.
"Do you know if it's a boy or girl?"
"It's much too soon for that, Ms. Toujou."
"Yukari?"
Yukari's eyes met Kurumu's and another tear rolled down her cheek.
"I'm going to be a big sister."
"Honey. Are you okay?"
Yukari sniffled, wiping her eyes.
"Sorry. I didn't think I'd ever have a sibling."
"I know. I had given up hope of having another baby years ago."
"When is the baby due?"
"Tentatively late July, early August."
Kurumu perked up at Mrs. Sendou's answer to Rubi.
"Around my birthday."
"Around my wedding."
Kurumu frowned at Mizore's soft comment.
"But you haven't actually picked a date for that."
Mizore shrugged, setting aside her spoon. The snow girl was finished with her okayu.
"My marriage is supposed to be on a taian day. It was going to be on January fifth if we had married this winter break. I have no idea what days are taian in August."
"But it must be flexible. They were going to marry you in November."
"On a tomobiki day. It wasn't going to be a noon ceremony."
"Girls. I could have this baby before your summer break. No need to fret over this now."
"As soon as everyone is finished, we will get to the presents. We also have gifts for you, Ms. Toujou."
"For me? You didn't have to."
"It's no trouble, Ms. Toujou."
Yukari rasped out a laugh, still crying.
"I don't even want to go back to Hong Kong now. I'd rather stay here."
"Oh, honey. There's nothing for you to do here."
Mr. Sendou huffed, crossing his arms.
"She wants to stay home, Fujiko. There's no reason for a girl her age to even be in high school."
"This again? High school is what she wanted."
"Because you made her lonely. The moment she learned about the baby, she wanted to stay home."
"Please don't fight!"
"It's not a fight. It's simple observation."
Yukari sobbed, shaking her head with a sniffle.
"I'm just scared. No matter how good I get with spells, I won't be fast enough for a fight."
"It isn't your fight. Your family is here. It's natural for you to want to stay."
"But she can't stay behind. I haven't learned her gateway spell to get us back to Mononoke or to Hong Kong for that matter."
"I'm sure the Headmaster could figure it out. My daughter does not need to be involved in this."
"They are her friends, dear."
"She's eleven. The only reason I didn't pull her from Yokai Academy after the cultural festival disaster is because your father is taking over."
"She's not going to want to stay at home when she realizes how needy babies are."
"Are we talking about my daughter or you?"
Mrs. Sendou sighed.
"Yukari is gifted. I'm not going to have her stay here and help me with the baby."
"It's too soon. The minimum age to enter any college is sixteen."
"But Chouda is going to graduate when she's fifteen."
Yukari sniffled at Kurumu's input, wiping away her tears.
"She's not going to college next year, Kurumu."
"She's not?"
"No. Her parents arranged for her to study abroad for six months. She'll be in London."
Kurumu smiled sheepishly, feeling like she should have known Chouda's plans. She had just assumed a top twenty student would go to college.
"But you talked about going to college with Moka."
"I do want that but Father is right. I couldn't enroll."
"I think it would be best for you to withdraw from high school. At least for two years."
"If you are that concerned with my ability to raise this baby, I can stay with my parents."
"If she waits two years, she will graduate at the age of sixteen. I'm not being unreasonable."
"You are asking her to abandon her friends."
"She should have never been involved in this."
"I am thankful that Yukari went to Yokai Academy."
Rubi's declaration smothered the father's ire. He sighed as the mother smiled at Rubi.
"Perhaps we should start opening presents."
"I feel so guilty. When I bought gifts, I didn't think of getting things for either of you."
"It's fine, Ms. Toujou. Are you finished with your meal, Ms. Shirayuki?"
Kurumu smiled apologetically, having ignored her okayu for most of this conversation. Mizore had eaten two of her tamagoyaki rolls but showed no interest in tackling the others.
"Is it okay if I don't eat the rest?"
"You can come back to it after opening presents."
Mr. Sendou stood up at the end of his statement which prompted Kurumu to do the same. Yukari got up and pushed her chair back against the table as she regarded Rubi.
"You bought gifts?"
"The Headmaster gave me a bonus last Monday. I bought presents for six of my dearest friends."
"You have friends?"
Kurumu gasped at Mizore's flat remark.
"Rude!"
Mizore shrugged as Kurumu wandered around the table.
"But you didn't have any gifts when I cast the spell last night."
"I took them out of your pocket dimension while you were all in bed."
Kurumu took Mizore's hand after the snow girl stood up. She fell in step behind Rubi and Yukari, leaving the dining room. The parents reached the tree in the corner first, kneeling down by the pile of presents.
"We will start with Ms. Toujou. My wife bought you these so don't hold me accountable."
Mr. Sendou held out two packages. One was wrapped in silver paper with white snowflakes while the other was wrapped in a red, white and green striped paper. Rubi knelt beside the father, taking both.
"Thank you so much for this. I haven't had a wrapped present since I was a little girl."
"Unsurprising. Your body snatching mentor probably saw no reason to spoil you."
Rubi pouted at the father as they settled around the tree. Mizore leaned her head against Kurumu's shoulder as Rubi tore off the striped paper to reveal a black box. She tugged off the top half of the box and frowned at the contents.
"Lingerie?"
"Her idea. Not mine."
"You're a young, mature woman and should have nice things."
Rubi pulled out a lacy black bra and bikini cut panties.
"Oh. Stockings."
"And a garter belt. Three complete sets."
Rubi lifted out another bra which was a dark red and a pair of pristine white stockings. All of it was lace with a floral pattern.
"Do I need to try it on?"
"Yukari told us your sizes so it should fit."
"I didn't think you'd actually buy her lingerie though."
"But she can't just own sports bras. No respectable young lady should be without nice lingerie."
Kurumu smirked, nudging Mizore.
"Did you hear that?"
"If Aoi wants to buy me lingerie, I'll wear it."
Rubi ripped off the silver paper from the second package, revealing a white box. She wiggled the top off, setting it aside as she frowned at the contents. She pulled out a burgundy satin chemise with black lace along the bosom hem and bosom.
"But I don't need more pajamas."
"This coming from a young woman whom slept in a tee shirt."
Rubi pouted, setting the chemise aside and pulling out a gray, corduroy tank top. She draped the thick strapped top over her arm to pull out a pair of corduroy shorts.
"These are nice."
"Yukari said you didn't have any casual shorts and that top came with it."
"I could also sleep in this."
"Well that wasn't the reason I picked it up, but you certainly could."
"And here is your New Year's gift."
Mr. Sendou held out an envelope to Rubi. The witch smiled, taking the envelope and opening it up. She pulled out a colorful card with a temple and opened it. A bunch of thousand yen bills fell out.
"Oh?! Money?!"
"Ten thousand. I trust you will spend it wisely."
"But I don't need money."
"That is not the point, young lady. It is yours to do with as you see fit."
"Am I getting a bunch of New Year's money?"
Mrs. Sendou laughed, draping an arm around Yukari and tugging her in closer.
"You are in high school now so I convinced Tamanori to not be as stingy."
"When I have ever been stingy with her?"
"Do you want to give her your presents first?"
Mr. Sendou huffed at his wife. He grabbed a package wrapped in yellow paper with a train design. He held it over to Yukari along with an envelope.
"You should wait until the New Year to open your envelope."
Yukari nodded, taking the package and the envelope. She started meticulously peeling off the tape which held the wrapping paper together.
"Oh? Was I not supposed to open mine?"
"Don't worry, Ms. Toujou. I didn't think about it until after you opened yours."
Mrs. Sendou smiled, toying with Yukari's hair as the girl continued to unravel her package. It took about a minute for her to carefully free the paper of all of the tape. She folded the wrapping paper up neatly and set it aside before tending to the black topped box which the paper had concealed. She shook the top of the box off, placing it next to the wrapping paper.
"You know… I'm never going to wear this."
Yukari pulled out a white shirt with short black sleeves. In the center of the shirt written in black kanji was daddy's little girl.
"Well it's not the only thing in that box."
Yukari pulled out a pair of black denim jeans which she shook out before setting it aside. She retrieved a thin, sky blue sundress which she draped over her shoulder. The last garment she removed from the box was a pink blouse with a crimped midsection and puffy short sleeves.
"I'll wear everything else you gave me."
"We have one other present for you."
Mr. Sendou huffed at his wife's declaration. He leaned over and grunted, dragging out another box. The box was wrapped in green paper with golden banners and red soldiers with black hats and pink faces. Teddy bears and toys were mixed in with the soldiers.
"This was your mother's idea."
He continued dragging the box across the smooth tatami floor until it was up against the box Yukari had just opened. The paper had torn along the bottom, revealing a black wooden box beyond.
"Don't bother sparing the paper. It tore when she wrapped it."
Despite his statement, Yukari started picking away at the tape holding the paper together on the sides. It took her several seconds to free the flaps on each side, allowing her to unravel the wrapping paper. The witch frowned at the wooden box which had a shiny silver handle and buckles holding the top together. She scooted in closer, freeing the latches on either side of the handle.
With the latches free, the top came apart and folding out to each side. Inside the box was a tray stocked with several colors of eyeshadow and blush. It had small brushes and pads to apply the makeup as well as a pencil for eye liner.
"You bought me makeup?"
"That's only the start, honey."
Mrs. Sendou leaned in to grab the tray and pulled it up. The tray parted in the middle, lifting up to the side with two silver bars keeping it attached to the box. The mother grabbed the other half of the tray and lifted it up to the other side, revealing another tray below which was lined with tubes of different colored lip sticks on one side while the other had little bottles of nail polish.
"This should have everything. You even have storage space below if you want to add things like hair brushes or accessories."
Mrs. Sendou grabbed a small handle in the center of that lower tray and picked it up. This tray was not connected to the box. The mother gestured inside the box with her free hand.
"Right now I only have four different bottles of perfume in there for you to try out. I should have bought you a manicure set. Slipped my mind."
Yukari frowned, taking the tray from her mother. She looked over the many different containers.
"But you don't even have this much makeup."
"You don't like it?"
Yukari bit her lip, glancing at her father. He huffed, shaking his head.
"Don't look at me. I think you're too young to meddle in cosmetics."
"I don't know, Mom. None of my friends have makeup."
"Really? But you've often asked for makeup. I thought with all of your new friends, someone would have only made that desire grow."
Kurumu grinned, rubbing Mizore's shoulder while the snow girl continued to snuggle against her.
"I don't even have lip gloss and I doubt Mizore has ever owned makeup."
Yukari sighed heavily, putting the tray back inside the chest.
"I guess we could have some fun with it. Ms. Goto is well versed with cosmetics. She could show us all how to do it properly."
"Or anyone from the fashion club for that matter. I bet Ms. Herikuda would love to doll us up."
"Oh! There is one other thing for you."
Mrs. Sendou reached behind the tree. She hefted out an arched piece of glossy black wood which was mounted to a stand. She turned it about, revealing a round mirror lined with a golden edge.
"It was too awkward to wrap up. You can place this on your desk."
Yukari leaned over, wrapping her mother up in an embrace.
"Thank you, Mom."
Mrs. Sendou sighed, setting aside the mirror to return the hug.
"I know how much you want to be treated like you are Ms. Toujou's age. I hope this was good enough."
The two held each other for a long moment. Kurumu smiled, taking in a deep breath. She wished she could have shared another moment like this with her mother.
"I believe it is time for Ms. Toujou to hand out her presents."
Rubi laughed at his announcement, pushing aside her things to crawl closer to the tree. She picked up a rectangle wrapped in black paper. She blushed as she handed it over to Yukari.
"I just realized I put all six presents under the tree when only three of you are here."
Yukari smirked, taking the package from Rubi.
"I'm guessing my Moka and Tsukune are two of those. Who is the third?"
"Ms. Shuzen. I'll give Mr. Aono his present tonight. Hopefully it won't be too long before I can give Ms. Shuzen and Moka their presents."
Yukari picked at the tape which held the wrapping paper together.
"What did you get for my Moka?"
"I didn't know what to get her or her sister so I just picked up a CD for each of them. I kind of know what sort of music they are into."
Eventually Yukari finished removing the tape. She unraveled the packaging, setting it aside. The black box had a crimson leaf pattern with the golden kanji for Jikan no Kawa.
Yukari gasped after taking off the top lid. She pulled out a silken, black garment which had an orange fish pattern. She handed it over to her mother as she took out a crimson sash and dark red cords.
"I hope you like it. I was actually in the store for Mr. Aono's present."
Yukari laughed, trading the sash for the robe. She hugged it against her body.
"You bought Tsukune a kimono?"
"Is that strange?"
"I don't know. Will this fit?"
"Kimonos can often be adjusted. I'll help you."
Yukari smiled at Mizore and nodded.
"Rubi… this had to be expensive."
"I couldn't leave the store without buying it. You are my best friend."
Yukari covered her mouth as her eyes betrayed her feelings. Setting the kimono back on top of the box, she crawled over to give Rubi a hug.
"I'm so… Thank you. I should have got you something."
Rubi squeezed the sniffling girl tight.
"You've already done so much for me. You and your family."
"I'm sorry. I really am."
"What are you apologizing for?"
Yukari probably felt guiltier than Kurumu did. None of them had even thought about buying anything for Rubi or getting her a souvenir. Rubi smiled, caressing the sniffling Yukari's cheek. Yukari pulled away.
"I want to try it on."
"Let Ms. Toujou finish handing out her presents."
Rubi leaned under the tree to fetch a package wrapped in glossy, dark blue paper with a snowflake pattern. She presented the oddly shaped package to Mizore, causing the temperature to drop slightly.
"This is for you, Ms. Shirayuki."
"I don't deserve this."
"Maybe you won't like it?"
The snow girl sighed, tearing off the wrapping to reveal a cream bag with the logo of the Clique upon it. Mizore freed the object from the store bag and she let out a brief laugh. It was a zebra striped tote with a black zipper. The snow girl unzipped the tote, pulling out some tan paper stuffing and a matching zebra striped clutch which came together with a golden clasp.
"I'm fairly sure that you don't have a purse. Not even in your room back in Yukimura."
"No reason to have one. I could carry everything in my schoolbag."
"You didn't want one?"
Mizore smiled softly, clutching the tote to her chest.
"I'll make good use of it. Thank you."
Kurumu felt anxious about receiving a gift. As Rubi leaned toward the tree, she took in a deep breath.
"See this is why I need a job. I can't buy things for the people I care about."
Rubi giggled, pulling out a box wrapped in baby blue paper with a cloud pattern. She presented it to Kurumu with a wide grin.
"I know. This was so much fun for me."
Kurumu reluctantly took the box from Rubi. Her heart fluttered as she unwrapped the gift. The picture on the side of the container revealed a brown box with a white relief of a bird flying over a pond with the moon in the background. The kanji on the side told her what it was.
"A musical jewelry box."
"I remembered that you wanted one. I saw this in the window of Always There."
Kurumu held the gift against her bosom, feeling guilty and grateful.
"You're too good for us, Rubi."
Rubi laughed, waving a dismissive hand.
"I'm sure you all would have done the same."
Kurumu polished off the last morsel of strawberry cake with white cream frosting from her plate. She set her fork aside, smiling at the older gentlemen seated across the table from her. The silver haired man wearing the brown and black striped sweater was Yukari's grandfather, Sendou Seitou. The man with the disheveled white hair dressed in a periwinkle, long sleeved dress shirt was Mr. Hakuru.
Lord Sendou's wife, Ai, was in the kitchen with Yukari's mother. The poor woman was still being scolded for buying their granddaughter cosmetics. Having no interest in saving his wife from that lecture, Mr. Sendou was in the living room reading a book.
"Do you think I could have another slice?"
Kurumu smirked at Mizore whom was seated beside her.
"How many is that now?"
"You had two."
"That's not what I asked."
Rubi laughed, picking up Mizore's plate.
"I'll go see if we can get another round."
Yukari sighed from her spot next to her grandfather. She shook her head as Rubi left.
"You are lucky that Mom made two cakes."
Mizore patted her belly.
"I'm eating for two."
"You should eat healthy for two."
Lord Sendou chuckled, gripping his cup of tea.
"Enjoy it while you can. When you get to be my age, sweets have to be in moderation."
"How old are you?"
The grandfather smirked at Kurumu.
"I'll be sixty three in February."
"For some reason I thought you would be older."
"I told you he was born in 1943."
Kurumu shrugged at Yukari as Rubi returned to the room.
"I don't remember everything you tell me."
"They only had one slice left. Here you go."
Mizore murmured her thanks as Rubi handed her the plate. Yukari sighed, shaking her head.
"You're going to get fat and not because of the baby."
"Aoi will still love me."
Kurumu giggled as Mizore calmly started on her cake. She gestured at the elderly man whom would be taking over Yokai Academy next week.
"Do you plan to extend the winter break?"
"With how Headmaster Mikogami left things, I have to for at least one week. There is no easy way of making every student return to the school in one weekend with minimal notice."
"Which is pointless. Even if you resume classes on the sixteenth, we can't teach science properly in the current state of the school."
"I'm well aware of your complaints."
"This isn't something we can give the students homework packets for. They need demonstrations. Actual lab experience. Not textbook nonsense."
"Will we be starting up on the sixteenth?"
"That highly depends on what the village elders think at the prefectural meeting next week. If they want us to open on the sixteenth, we will. We might even be able to have everyone in the school."
"Really? The construction will be finished?"
"No, Ms. Kurono. The first and second year wing will not be finished until February. But the third year wing will be fully operational."
Kurumu frowned, trying to understand his response.
"But you said you could have everyone in the school."
"You are forgetting that the third year wing has classrooms upstairs. Six vacant rooms, four elective rooms and a disciplinary room. We can put the twelfth class of second years in the sewing room."
Yukari perked up, wagging a finger.
"I see. And if you have the first years set up the way the third years were while the third year wing was being repaired, you could bring everyone back on the sixteenth."
"Obviously we can't have gym, science or electives, but we could cover the rest of the courses. Now this isn't how I want to reopen the school. But if the village elders insist, we can do it."
"When do you want to reopen the school?"
"To be honest, Ms. Kurono, I am tempted to delay until February sixth."
"A whole month?!"
"I don't want to require attendance until the school can fully open. The courses we can cover could be handled with homework packets. I suppose we could allow parents to schedule pickups with Mr. Nurari after the college entrance exams are over and resume those classes on the thirtieth."
"That's not much better. I know several students whom don't want a long, extended break."
"I can't be troubling Mr. Nurari with pickups during the weekend of college entrance exams. Either I'm bringing everyone back for the sixteenth or it will have to be delayed until the thirtieth."
"Can't you bring people back if they want to come back?"
"Ms. Toujou. How many students have arranged to be picked up on the sixth?"
Rubi perked up at Lord Sendou's inquiry.
"Um… twenty seven, Sir. The Headmaster expects that number to at least double if not triple by the time of the annual meeting."
"Is that all students or just third years?"
"Third years, Sir. There are a few requests from younger students but they won't be considered."
"They better be considered. Satsuki and Tora can't be stranded for three extra weeks in Aserutani. And what about Mikomi and Tokori? You can't expect Tokori's relatives to put them up for another month."
"There will always be a few people inconvenienced by the situation, Ms. Kurono. That can't be helped."
"Mrs. Meirowasa is going to be a teacher at your school. You would think you would take care of that."
"They probably are, Kurumu. They aren't going to bring the mother back and leave her kids and Ms. Sawayaka behind."
Kurumu paused, realizing she might be making too much of this issue.
"Do you think Ms. Nekonome will stop by her mother's house to pick up Satsuki and Tora?"
"She did say her trip to Paris would be over by the fourth. It's not unreasonable to think that she's going to swing by her mother's place and bring those two back with her."
Kurumu nodded, leaning over to grab the strap of her tote. She hauled it up into her lap, fishing her phone out. She had already loaded it up with over two dozen pictures today.
"Should I try calling them now? It's a little after two thirty."
"You could give it a shot. Do you have service?"
Kurumu snorted, looking at the service symbol on her screen.
"No. But you said that I should try using the spell first."
"Go ahead and do that. I can verify if the spell is connected or not."
Kurumu held the phone up to her ear as Yukari got up and made her way around the table.
"Call Tora."
She felt a momentary surge of power but it quickly dissipated. She knew the answer before Yukari took the phone from her. The witch nodded, handing the phone back.
"No connection. She must be inside Aserutani."
"Well we figured that would be the case. Can I leave a voicemail without service?"
"I can help with that."
"You can?"
Lord Sendou nodded, gesturing for her to hand over the phone. She acquiesced.
"These devices operate by sending and receiving signals. The problem you have is that you're phone signal is too weak to be picked up by the nearest network signal receiver. You need a signal boost."
"How will you do that?"
"You don't have enough energy in the battery to do it. You'll need to plug this in and then I can give it a temporary spell to increase the signal strength. They have outlets in the living room."
Lord Sendou got up from his chair which prompted Yukari and Kurumu to do the same. Kurumu fished her cord out of her purse as they followed the old man into the living room and over to the armchair.
"It will be best to keep your message brief."
Kurumu knelt down to plug the charger into the socket next to the lamp's cord. She handed the other end to Yukari whom took the phone from her grandfather.
"Can I call some other people while I have the boosted signal?"
"This spell won't last more than five minutes. Don't expect to have a conversation."
Lord Sendou took the phone from Yukari once she had connected it to the charger. He breathed in deep and brushed his wrinkled fingers across the phone. There was a hum of energy and then every light in the house flickered and went off.
"What did you do?"
Lord Sendou chuckled at Mr. Sendou's annoyed inquiry, handing the phone back to Kurumu.
"Just gave the girls some phone service."
Mr. Sendou sighed, setting aside his book. He pushed up onto his feet.
"I'll go check the fuse boxes and generator. I hope you didn't break something."
Kurumu smiled apologetically as the father stalked off. Glancing at the screen, she noticed that she had full charge and a strong signal. She opened the menu for her contacts and selected Tora's number. She held the phone up to her ear, waiting for it to ring. The message to leave a voice mail came up instead. She waited for the generic message to finish.
"Hey, Tora. Merry Christmas. Also found out that winter break is being extended at least a week if not a whole month. If you haven't planned this already, maybe you could contact Ms. Nekonome to take you back to Yokai? Just a thought. Again. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Bye."
Kurumu hung up and looked through her contacts. Kokoa, Ms. Kiyoshi and Kabuki were all next to each other. Thinking it would be best to start at the top, she selected Kabuki's number and held the phone up to her ear. It rang twice.
"You called?!"
Kurumu laughed at the exuberant response.
"Yea but I don't have good service. Merry Christmas!"
"Merry Christmas! Momma actually bought me that Ghost in the Shell game, huh? So cool."
"Oh? I thought she would give you money."
"Naw. She gives that on New Year's, huh? I have no idea what I will do with it, huh?"
"A good problem to have."
"Where are you, huh? Are you in Kumamoto, huh?"
"Not yet. I need to call Kokoa and see what the plan is."
"Well call me when you get here, huh? I want to see you before the break is over, huh?"
"I will. I got another call to make."
"Oh, okay. Love you, Big Sis."
"Love you too."
Kurumu smirked, realizing the girl had hung up. She was still in her contact list so she just moved down to the next name and hit the call button. She brought the phone up to her ear, hearing it ring several times. She sighed when the phone connected with the voicemail, playing a generic message.
"Merry Christmas, Ms. Kiyoshi. I hope you are safe and have good news."
She heard the call disconnect in the middle of her sentence. She glanced down at her phone and noted that the signal was gone.
"That didn't feel like five minutes."
Lord Sendou chuckled as the lights flickered back on.
"I never said it would last exactly that long."
"But I still haven't called Kokoa."
"I'm sorry, Ms. Kurono. But I shouldn't boost your phone again. Not only do I risk breaking that device, I clearly would annoy my son in law."
The old man stuffed his hands in the pockets of his tweed trousers, stalking off.
"Now, Ms. Toujou. I need to talk to you about the retiring Headmaster."
While Kurumu was mildly interested in that conversation, she wanted to talk to Kokoa.
"Do you think Kokoa is in Iromori?"
"You may as well call her and find out. She might have news from her mother."
Kurumu sighed, turning about and sitting on the back of the couch. Her phone still had plenty of charge.
"You do remember that she wants me to have a heart operation."
"Mrs. Shuzen isn't going to have you do that unless she knows you will survive."
"Do you think they planned on picking me up from Hong Kong?"
"Just call the brat already."
Kurumu chuckled, supposing she was stalling because she was afraid to be disappointed. She looked at the gathering in the dining room which now included everyone else in the house.
"Call Kokoa."
She felt the hum of the energy fueling the spell. It stayed active.
"Hey? Kokoa? You there?"
A shushing sound answered her followed by the faint sounds of footsteps. Kurumu smiled at Yukari. The witch shrugged, sauntering around Kurumu to lean against the couch. Almost a whole minute passed.
"That was so embarrassing. I forgot that my phone was in my tote."
"Merry Christmas, Kokoa."
"Yea, yea. Merry Christmas. What do you want?"
Yukari huffed indignantly.
"We didn't have to call you."
"Oh, hush, Yukari. Are you at the Shuzen Estate?"
"No. I'm in Lord Tomi's mansion."
"Where is that?"
"Somewhere near the Suonada Country Club. Lord Tomi helped fund the grand opening decades ago."
"Why are you there?"
"Um… it's Christmas. Lord Tomi always holds a Christmas party."
"I thought the only family thing you had to do was the New Year's Festival."
"That's the only thing I was guaranteed to do since Mother hosts that. Mother just showed up last night and told me that we were going to this."
"Is my Moka there?"
"No. Why would she be?"
"Akua attacked the Huang family headquarters and forced my Moka to go with her."
There was a long pause of silence.
"Mother didn't say anything about it. When did this happen?"
"Two days ago."
"And you're just telling me now?!"
"I honestly didn't think about calling you."
"If you were in Iromori, we wouldn't have been able to contact you anyways. This spell doesn't work through some of the barriers around monster communities."
"Useless spell then."
"The only thing useless is this conversation."
Kurumu patted Yukari's head with a chuckle.
"Settle down. We still have several things we need to talk about with Kokoa."
"Unless she had a meaningful chat with her mother, I doubt that she has any answers."
Kokoa huffed indignantly.
"As boring as this party is, I have heard a few things. Apparently that man posing as my father challenged Mother for the family head position."
"Oh? When is that happening?"
"Today but Mother is blowing him off. Half of the family is at Lord Tsuyosei's Christmas party."
Kurumu shared a look with Yukari. The witch nodded, leaning in close enough to touch shoulders.
"I bet that my Moka is at that party along with Lord Fujisaki."
"Maybe. Grandfather and Lord Yoshiro normally come to this party. But since that challenge was made, they went all the way to Lord Tsuyosei's place in the Wakayama prefecture. The only elders here are Lord Uniki and Lord Musashi besides Lord Tomi of course."
Yoshiro was the man whose son the fake Issa had killed. Tsuyosei was supposedly the father of Akua's grandmother. Uniki was the youngest family elder whose sister had become a teacher at Yokai Academy. His daughter, Rena, was Nagi's wife and the family seamstress.
"I honestly don't remember the names of all of your family elders. Which one was your Grandfather?"
"Lord Koujou. We practically passed by his home on the way here from Iromori."
"And I'm guessing that Musashi is Nagi and Tara's father."
"Yea. First time I've seen them since summer break since Mother dumped me off at Lord Ruben's house Sunday night."
Kurumu nodded, organizing her thoughts.
"Is our teacher at this party?"
"Yea. She was keeping me company since there isn't anybody my age here."
"Is it okay that your mother blows off a challenge like this?"
"I don't really know but it's not like this fake can take charge without the family elders allowing it. And I don't see that happening without an official fight. Even if they believe he is my father, they're not going to just hand control over to a man whom abandoned his family for years."
"Can you tell your mother about Moka? There is a chance that she doesn't know."
"Yea… I also need to ask her about when we can check on you for that operation."
"Well we will be going back to Hong Kong tomorrow morning. Your mother most likely has the contact information for the Huang family where we will be staying."
"Your winter break has to be more exciting than mine. It's not fun playing with Lord Ruben's brats."
Kurumu smirked, recalling her one meeting with the prefectural officer's family.
"He has two young boys."
"Two annoying boys. Ms. Fukuda dropped by on Friday and rescued me from this prison. We visited that lingerie shop you wanted me to. Since your bras have to be special ordered, they said it would not be a problem having one made in pastel yellow lace."
"Oh? Did you also shop for Moka?"
"Yea. They had her size on file so we ordered a replacement for that red bra Kahlua ruined and a yellow set for her. I also picked up a yellow set for me since you probably want us all to match."
Kurumu smirked at Kokoa's flat tone.
"No need to sound so disappointed."
"I'm just worried. Will Moka be okay?"
Kurumu sucked in a deep breath and smiled.
"She's with Akua."
"That doesn't make me feel better."
"I think it's strange for this fake to challenge your mother's authority."
Kurumu frowned at Yukari.
"That's not that surprising. He sort of did that back at Kahlua's wedding."
"If Lord Fujisaki has the power to remove the rosary, there's not much reason for him to fool around with the Shuzen family. I'd argue that there's no reason at all for him or my Moka to be at that party."
"We don't know if he's at that party."
"But why have the fake do this? What benefit is there?"
Kurumu paused, trying to understand what point Yukari was trying to determine.
"Do you think this means that he can't remove the rosary?"
"Master Touhou believed it was unlikely for Akua to be able to bring Moka to the Garden before today. Unless Fujisaki is blowing off this party, he probably hasn't determined if he can remove the rosary yet."
"So you think Moka isn't at the party?"
"I'm saying that this challenge must have been made before Akua grabbed Moka. Was he that confident in her success? Or is there some benefit that I'm not seeing?"
"I think you're trying too hard to understand this psychopath. Remember that he also is trying to frame Tsukune for what happened in Yukimura. That doesn't exactly help him revive Alucard."
"But that makes sense. He has to blame someone for his crimes or he would get arrested."
"Can you guys somehow contact Moka?"
Kurumu and Yukari exchanged wide eyed looks.
"She did take all of her belongings."
"Do you think it's safe to call her?"
"Only one way to find out. Great idea, Kokoa. I guess you do have a brain."
"Shut up! I'm a top five student, brat!"
Kurumu giggled, shaking her head.
"We'll call you right back to let you know if we could reach her."
"Okay. I'll go see if I can talk with Mother about this."
"Good luck, Kokoa. End call."
Kurumu inhaled deeply as she brought the phone to her breast. She murmured under her breath a hope that Moka was okay. Taking another deep breath, she held the phone out.
"Call Moka."
Yukari shivered as the hum of power remained steady after the initial surge.
"The line is live."
"Hello? Who's there?"
Kurumu laughed as her heart was flooded in relief with the sound of Moka's voice.
"It's us, my beloved. Are you safe? Where are you?"
"You have phone?"
Moka laughed pleasantly on the other end.
"Yes, Sister. Yukari has a wonderful spell that allows us to talk even if we don't have service."
"Let me see that."
"Hey, Akua. Are you in Japan?"
"No. Miss flight."
"You're still in Hong Kong?!"
Moka giggled at Kurumu's disbelief.
"Sister intentionally missed our flight."
"They no need know that."
Yukari leaned closer to the phone.
"Why would she miss the flight?"
"Because she got jealous of my Tinkerbell earrings."
"Not true!"
"Jealous that I had so much fun with my friends at Disneyland."
"Not fair. Love you lots more than they do."
Yukari shared a glance with Kurumu.
"Did you miss the plane to go to Disneyland with your sister?"
There was a long moment of silence.
"Technically the other Moka got to go."
Kurumu laughed as Yukari shook her head in disbelief.
"I can't believe you! Everybody is worried about you and you run off to a theme park."
"It was Akua's idea."
"Fujisaki said was fine. He had other weekend plans."
Yukari sighed heavily as Kurumu continued to giggle.
"We've heard about those plans. The fake Issa is challenging Mrs. Shuzen for her position."
"Oh dear. Does Mother think that will go well?"
"She's not even going to it. She's at Lord Tomi's Christmas party with Kokoa while the fake Issa is at Lord Tsuyosei's party."
"I see. Well our plane will leave here tomorrow in the afternoon and will land in Tokyo in the evening. That man posing as our father is supposed to meet us there."
"Met him once. Not Issa. His eyes are wrong."
Kurumu recalled Mrs. Shuzen had said something similar.
"Will the two of you be okay?"
"Course. Protect Moka."
"I'm worried. Once Akua brings me to Fujisaki, he won't have a need for her or Deshi."
"No worry, Moka. I keep my word."
"My Moka is right, Ms. Akua. You're in much more danger than she is."
"You good friends. But I good warrior. I not lose."
"Rubi bought you a CD for Christmas. She doesn't remember which band or album it was so you have to come back safely to find out."
Moka laughed in a disarming manner.
"I will, Yukari. I love you both so much. Thank you for calling."
"Of course, Moka. Merry Christmas."
Moka and Yukari echoed her sentiments. Kurumu squeezed the hot phone in her hand.
"I'm going to call Kokoa now and let her know about your flight plans. Maybe your mother can help."
Akua huffed on the other end.
"Still think that woman work with Fujisaki."
"Don't be silly, Akua. She wouldn't be at a different Christmas party if that was true."
"Where her help when his men slaughter everyone at Garden? Those good people. Deserved better."
Kurumu smiled, hearing the anger in Akua's voice. It reminded her of how she felt about her own mother for far too many years.
"It wasn't her fault, Akua. Deep down… you know she isn't on his side."
"Care not. Moka and I playing game. You interrupt."
"Oh? What game are you playing?"
"How turn this off?"
Moka laughed brightly.
"I hope to hear from you again or that you will rescue us soon."
"No rescue. I kill Alucard. Save the world."
"Yes. Right after you burn dinner."
"No! Mira excellent cook."
"Mira? Who's Mira?"
"Her doll. I got to go. End call."
Kurumu frowned as the line died. She glanced at Yukari.
"They're playing with dolls."
Yukari snickered, shaking her head. She pushed off the couch and stalked away.
"You can explain that to the brat."
Kurumu shivered as she walked into the clearing about the Kurai dining hall while holding Mizore's hand. As it was nearly seven, it was too dark outside to see any specific details of the building. As the panes of glass were as black as obsidian, it was impossible to tell if anyone was inside.
"Are you sure about this?"
Yukari trailed behind them. Like Kurumu and Mizore, the young girl was still dressed in her pajamas. Rubi walked alongside the younger witch, wearing that tube top and jeans which contrasted so much with her pale skin in the moonlight. She was carrying her present for Tsukune.
"It will be fun, Yukari. We don't need to meet up with Tsukune tonight."
"I'd rather cast the spell tonight and sleep it off than start the morning with wiping myself out."
"I'm sure that the Headmaster will help you fuel your spell like your Grandfather did."
"We don't even know when we will see the Headmaster tomorrow."
"It'll be fine, Yukari. I'll make sure that you see the Headmaster first thing tomorrow morning."
Kurumu smiled as Rubi fussed with Yukari's hair. She turned her attention back to the building before her, squeezing Mizore's hand. She could hear the faint sound of Christmas music drifting out to them.
"Are you ready for another Christmas party?"
"Don't expect me to eat anything."
Kurumu giggled, letting go of Mizore's hand. She skipped ahead to reach the door, tugging it open for her friends. The music volume increased and mingled with the sounds of jovial conversation.
"Oh, joy. That sounds like Ginei."
Kurumu laughed at Yukari's comment, realizing that was Ginei's voice in the mix as Mizore entered the dining hall first.
"The snow princess has arrived!"
"Some princess. What happened to giving us a white Christmas?"
Kurumu giggled, slipping in behind the witches. The first comment had come from Ginei but the second had been from Tashikana Ichigo. She quickly found the group gathered about a table in the center of the seating area.
The Voice of Yokai stood off to the side with Ginei and Miyamoto. He was dressed in a long sleeved, mint dress shirt and gray textured slacks. His lilac locks were long enough to have a natural wave to them but too short to even reach his neck.
Ginei was dressed to impress as always. He had left the top three buttons of his black, silk dress shirt undone to expose his silver wolf head pendant. A green bandana held back his dark locks which sort of matched his olive cargo pants. Shiny black dress shoes completed his ensemble.
Miyamoto was unsurprisingly garbed in his karate gi. His ashen gray locks were in their usual mess of spikes. Despite their arrival, his attention was fixated on the young women seated at the table.
Otonashi's presence at the table was unexpected. The quiet graduate had her back to them and had on a long sleeved, cream colored frock. She was looking over her shoulder with a smile, offering a wave with a candy cane nestled in the corner of her mouth.
Seated beside the siren was Kumiko whom Kurumu could not recall if she had ever seen in casual wear. The plum haired girl was garbed in a long sleeved, pink sweater and a pair of blue jeans.
To Kumiko's left was her sister, Keito. The pregnant third year had her torso swathed in a long sleeved, dark green sweater of the same style as her sister's. A pair of gray sweatpants clung tightly to her hips.
"What are you two doing here?"
Ginei chuckled as Yukari strolled over to the table with Rubi on her heels.
"We are your reinforcements."
"Really? I guess the Headmaster doesn't want the world saved."
Kaneshiro laughed from his wheelchair which was parked beside the table. The third year was garbed in school attire with his jacket draped across his lap.
"An excellent observation, Ms. Sendou. But I lacked the courage to say that aloud."
Sabaku huffed, sitting across from the girls in the spot closest to Kaneshiro. The big guy was sporting a striped turtleneck with every color of the rainbow represented. His arms were crossed defiantly.
"Whatever the Headmaster has planned, it doesn't concern you."
Otonashi hopped up from her spot, giving Yukari a hug as Mizore claimed a spot at the table. Yukari sighed, returning the embrace.
"I often doubt the Headmaster has anything resembling a plan."
There was an unfamiliar guy sitting at the table beside Sabaku. He was shorter and slimmer than the bulky PSC leader. His fiery red hair was swept up like a broomstick. He was wearing a red shirt with a Mandarin collar. His orange, almond shaped eyes rested about a thin nose.
"I take it that Mr. Nurari also stopped by your place."
Miyamoto chuckled at Kurumu's remark, clapping a hand upon Ginei's shoulder.
"Actually this dog was at my place."
Kurumu frowned, joining the group as Otonashi detached from Yukari to hug Rubi.
"I thought you were staying at Koike's place."
Kurumu had to smile when Otonashi decided it was her turn for a hug. She wrapped the girl up in a tight embrace, breathing the small girl in as Miyamoto continued to chuckle.
"Nope. He was with Ms. Udetama when we went to pick her up on Monday. Guess he was causing Mr. Koike's mother too much grief."
"Hey. When a mom looks that good, you have to let it be known."
Kurumu clucked her tongue as she stepped back to arms' length with Otonashi. She noticed that the group had set up two more tables in the hall for the party. One had Tashikana's DJ equipment with a bunch of CDs while the other was loaded up with snacks.
"Sheesh, Ginei. Have you no shame?"
"I'm only playing, Kurumu. I wasn't asked to leave for flirting with Kousuke's mother."
"That's not a denial."
Ginei chuckled, crossing his arms.
"I wanted to help Lady Otonashi find her parents. Koike would have come with us but his whole missing arm thing has his mother worried about if he should even return to Yokai Academy."
"I do hope he returns. I always liked what he brought to the PSC."
Sabaku grunted at Lady Hineri's comment. There was a long moment with only the cheerful Christmas music playing in the background. Taking in a deep breath, Kurumu toyed with Otonashi's hair.
"Did you have any luck finding your family?"
Otonashi smiled with a resigned look in her soft eyes.
"They didn't want me."
"We spoke with the Hikokawa family in Tonekawa. The family looks upon our little bird as a murderer."
"But what happened with her father was an accident."
"It's not the father that they care about. They blame her for her mother's suicide."
Kurumu sighed, pulling the girl back in for a hug.
"I'm so sorry."
"Bunch of morons if you ask me. Lady Otonashi is the kindest, sweetest young woman I've ever had the pleasure to meet."
"What about your mother?"
Ginei snickered at Miyamoto's remark.
"Unless you are like separated at birth, you don't meet your mother."
"Where does Ms. Hajihachi rate on your scale?"
"Down on all fours, begging for my puppy pudding."
Kurumu laughed at his answer to Tashikana's amused query. She shook her head, drawing back to arms' length again with Otonashi.
"You are a horrible person, Ginei."
"I love her, Kurumu. I feel like that will be true no matter what happens. Which is why the Hikokawa family are a bunch of fools. What is not to love about Lady Otonashi?"
"I love Keito but I wouldn't dare say that I want her begging for my babies."
Lady Hineri blushed at Tashikana's remark, looking aside.
"Can we talk about something else?"
Kaneshiro laughed, gesturing at the standing trio of young men.
"Yes. I believe with the arrival of the four young ladies that a second table is required."
"I wholeheartedly agree. Will the world saving reinforcements be interested in fetching a table?"
Ginei snickered at Tashikana before stalking off.
"I don't have an issue with it. So which one of us gets to be the sober escort?"
Miyamoto shrugged indifferently as he moved to assist Ginei in bringing a nearby table closer.
"I am not interested in getting drunk tonight."
"Getting drunk? You have booze."
Tashikana chuckled as the two boys hefted up the table.
"We will. I recruited Ms. Uzukawa and Ms. Oda into providing the libations. Rumors about campus claim that they have quite the collection in their room."
"I didn't realize there were other students on campus."
Kumiko huffed indignantly as Ginei and Miyamoto carefully placed the table close enough to the first with a small walkway between the benches.
"Those two are swimming club seniors, Ms. Kurono. None of them are leaving Mononoke while their babies are in that public pool."
Kurumu laughed brightly, recalling that Uzukawa was the twin tailed, gruff girl from her gym period.
"Oh! Does that mean Ms. Niiya is still on campus?"
Ginei chuckled as he sat down at the table he had just placed.
"I honestly don't know. We haven't been on campus for more than two hours."
"We had just put our things away in Morioka's room when we bumped into Mr. Sabaku."
Ginei patted the open bench beside.
"Have a seat, girls. I don't bite."
Rubi and Yukari shared a look before the older witch made her way over to the table. She sat beside Ginei, placing the gift on the table.
"Aw, you shouldn't have."
Rubi swatted Ginei's hand which had neared the gift as Yukari sat beside her.
"This isn't yours, Mr. Morioka. I bought this for Mr. Aono."
"You girls spoil that boy far too much."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Morioka. I didn't think to buy you a gift."
"I was only teasing, Rubi. I don't expect to get any gifts."
"He says that but there was an envelope full of cash from his parents waiting for him in his mailbox."
"Hey, I was surprised about that. Mother's letter also said half of that should go to a gift for Mika."
Kurumu grinned, letting Otonashi detach from her. The siren drifted back to her spot at the table, sitting between Mizore and Kumiko as Kurumu wandered around the table.
"Do you have any ideas what to buy Mika?"
"Since we are going to Hong Kong with you, I was thinking we could pick up one of those sexy Chinese dresses. I'm confident that I know her sizes well enough to get her something that fits."
Kurumu smirked, sitting at the end of the table across from Mizore.
"It's good to see that you're out of your room, Lady Hineri."
"I'm only here because Ichigo would have been a complete nuisance otherwise."
"I saw that you and your sister finally watched the latest Harry Potter movie."
The sisters shared a suspicious look.
"How did you know that?"
"Ms. Kurono felt it was prudent to examine my motivations."
Lady Hineri perked up at Kaneshiro's declaration. She looked at Sabaku.
"And you allowed this?"
"I'm babysitting him because there are doubts concerning the innocence of his return."
"What innocence is there to discuss? He told us about Mr. Yoshii immediately."
"He didn't tell us everything."
Lady Hineri nodded slowly.
"And it is all okay now?"
"As okay as it can be. It would be nice if we stuck together though. Discourage this Yoshii from trying to make contact with him."
"I was thinking to ask that of Ichigo. For your safety."
Sabaku huffed, glancing towards the doors.
"We're also going to give him some blood. It should help his condition."
"We?"
"Ms. Sukoyaka and I. She already gave him some today."
"How was your Christmas lunch with Myaku?"
"It was pleasant, Ms. Kurono. Ms. Sukoyaka appreciated the barrette."
Kurumu pouted at his formal response.
"You could call her by her first name."
He smiled, absently pushing his glasses further up the bridge of his nose.
"When it feels genuine, Ms. Kurono."
Kurumu sighed as Tashikana headed over to his DJ station since the music had stopped. As he started changing out CDs, Kurumu gestured at the young man next to Sabaku.
"Whom is this young man casually overhearing our serious conversation?"
The man grinned sheepishly, bowing his head.
"I am Fare Lu. Second year class eight."
Kurumu grinned at his thick accent, reminding her of Huang.
"I am Kurono Kurumu. First year class two. The pretty girl across from me is Shirayuki Mizore. First year class three. And my little friend is Sendou Yukari from my homeroom."
"Mr. Fare is a member of my chess club."
Kurumu smirked at Kaneshiro's announcement.
"I thought you didn't know anybody from your club."
"I remember him from the few meetings I did attend last year."
"Why are you still on campus, Mr. Fare?"
Fare turned to Yukari and nodded.
"I from small village in China. Very hard go home. Better for family visit me."
"Same issue here."
"You are from China?"
Sabaku laughed heartily as he finally uncrossed his meaty arms.
"No, Ms. Kurono. I'm from a small city in the desert of Australia."
"Australia? How did you end up here?"
"I'm also curious. Your Japanese is so fluent that I never expected you to be from a different country."
Lady Hineri laughed at Kaneshiro's interest as a new holiday song started playing in the background.
"I've known about him being from Australia but only because Lord Kuyo pulled student files for anyone trying to join his PSC. Perhaps you don't mind telling everyone more about yourself?"
"The short version is that my great grandfather knew the Headmaster. He filled my head with stories about the great leader in Japan whom was pursuing coexistence with mankind."
"Doesn't the monsters in your country desire that?"
Sabaku chuckled at Yukari's innocent query.
"Even if they do, we are not a unified entity like Fairy Tale. What Japan has is very unique."
"Very true. My village in China. Minimal contact with other villages. Human. Monster. All same. We remote. Keep to selves. My education before Japan. Tutors. Books. No school."
"How is that even possible?"
"It is. No government. Just villages. My grandfather rules my village."
"I would think that China would have something like Fairy Tale."
"Not where I from, Ms. Kurono. China very big."
"Doesn't the Huang family have connections in China?"
"Yes. Merchants. Good for trade. Not government."
"Is your grandfather friends with the Headmaster?"
"My family knows Gizatochi family."
"Oh! So you're like related to them."
"Related? No. Friends."
Kurumu frowned at him, wondering if this was a language issue. She thought about continuing this conversation in Cantonese but remembered that Cantonese was not spoken everywhere in China.
"How did your family become friends with the Gizatochi clan?"
"Yes. How you say? Omia?"
"Oh! You're a raiji?"
"No, no. Not raiji. Gizatochi family rule Uchimori. Coordinate with for omia."
Kurumu nodded, thinking she understood this now. Uchimori was one of those villages with lots of different monster races living there.
"So you are related to a family in Uchimori."
"Yes. Father's cousin has very pretty wife. I want very pretty bride."
Kurumu grinned at his genuine smile.
"Any luck with that?"
"I graduate before any girl from Hinorei family attends Yokai."
"You don't look disappointed."
Fare turned his smile upon Ginei.
"Hibana turn fourteen September seventeen. Maybe she want marriage."
"Have you talked with this girl?"
"Yes. Believe she interest. But might want high school. Will talk more next break."
Kurumu smiled warmly at his positive attitude.
"Well I hope you don't mind waiting for her. I wouldn't want to give up my high school years."
"Yes. Can college if she want time."
"Is your family in control of the city you came from?"
Sabaku chuckled with a shake of his head.
"No, Ms. Kurono. We're just humble farmers."
"Farmers that send someone to a high school in another country."
Sabaku smirked at Yukari.
"I didn't say that we were broke farmers."
"Don't they have high schools in Australia?"
"They do. I suppose you could say that the boarding school in Shirasu is like Yokai Academy."
"So it's like a prefectural school."
"Sort of. We bring in students from many villages in Northern Territory and South Australia. But school in Australia isn't the same as school in Japan. There is no junior high. It's just high school and that starts in the seventh grade. I spent three years in the Shirasu high school before coming here."
"But your school can't be the only school in Australia."
"That is true, Ms. Sendou. There were seven other boarding schools that we competed against."
"That sounds like an organized system."
"It's not. The seven schools I mentioned are the ones that take students from villages that don't have high schools. Some of these villages don't even have primary schools. This is more a matter of necessity than establishing a national government. If these villages had the population to sustain themselves, they would be isolated."
"But the ones you do know about are unified."
"No, Ms. Sendou. Coming together to create a competitive system between our schools is not the same as establishing a government. What you have here in Japan is vastly different from what I grew up with. There is no shadow government to aid us in becoming actual citizens of Australia."
"Have the leaders of your boarding school cities ever thought about establishing a nation?"
Sabaku chuckled at Kaneshiro's interest.
"I'm sure that they have discussed it. These cities have become trade centers in the last two decades. But we are so spread out. The nearest city of Svartroyk is a ten hour drive from Shirasu."
"Why are you so far apart?"
Sabaku laughed at Kurumu.
"You must not know much about Australia. The continent is huge. And I should mention that none of the cities in our little agreement are in New South Wales or Victoria. There must be monster villages in those states but I can't say that I've ever heard of anyone trading with any communities there."
"Couldn't you make a government with what you have?"
"Maybe we could but it's nothing like Fairy Tale. If Fairy Tale came out of the shadows, they would be doing so with most of the monster villages in Japan under their wing. Our eight boarding schools and all of the villages they support might not even make up a tenth of the monster population in Australia."
"Fairy Tale had to start somewhere, Mr. Sabaku. Don't let your elders back away from a challenge simply because it isn't country wide in a decade."
"Well said, Ms. Sendou. I agree that you should try to push your leaders to make a nation with the goal of coexistence."
Sabaku huffed at Kaneshiro.
"I don't want to hear that from someone whom tried to start a war between monsters and humans."
"And have learned the error of my ways. Monsters, like humans, have certain individuals that the world would be a better place without. But I am realizing that most are simply… idiots."
"I was hoping that you would say something kinder."
"You expect far too much from me, Lady Hineri."
"So you came to Yokai Academy just because your great grandfather knew the Headmaster?"
Sabaku chuckled at Yukari's dubious tone.
"I'll admit that I have an Aunt from Okinawa whom often looked after me since I was two. She is whom taught me the language."
"That doesn't sound like a better reason."
"I can get citizenship here, Ms. Sendou. I had to be smuggled into Japan. It's difficult to get citizenship in Australia. We don't have our fingers in the human government the way Fairy Tale does."
"The booze has arrived!"
Kurumu looked up at Tashikana's declaration and shivered. Tsukune strolled through the door, carrying a crate full of bottles. He was wearing a sky blue polo and black denim jeans. His duffle bag dangled by its strap resting upon his shoulder.
The girl following in his shadow had gorgeous black hair which came down in curls to touch the top of her bosom. This familiar girl from Kurumu's gym group was garbed in a white blouse with puffy, short sleeves and a pleated lower hem which rested upon the loops of her black denim jeans. Her electric blue eyes sparkled with amusement.
"We found a strong, young man to carry our burden."
Ginei laughed merrily as the other familiar mermaid entered the room, letting the door close behind her. That girl with the usual grumpy expression was Uzukawa Tamari. Her lavender tresses were held up in twin tails and her bangs were pushed out of her fierce aquamarine eyes with a pink coral barrette. She had a pastel yellow halter top which bared her belly button. She also had black denim jeans.
"You should have kept holding the door open for this strong man. Poor guy will have to let himself in."
Tsukune snickered, walking over with steady strides.
"Merry Christmas to you too, Ginei."
"Oh, Tsukune! Didn't see you there. Nobody tell the underage boy about the liquor."
Tsukune smirked as he neared the table.
"Where do you guys want this?"
"Put that by our responsible student council president."
"Former student council president, Mr. Tashikana."
"Ah yes. Still it would be near our responsible leader of the PSC."
Tsukune grinned, setting the crate down on the table with a clink of glass upon glass. Kurumu shivered when Oda draped her left arm upon Tsukune's shoulders.
"Thank you, Mr. Aono. Would you like to be the first to sample our wares?"
"No, Ms. Oda. As Ginei stated, I am underage."
"Liquor isn't the only thing we have to offer."
Uzukawa snorted, claiming the open spot beside Lady Hineri in front of the crate.
"Stop flirting with the kid."
Oda giggled, withdrawing from Tsukune. She placed her hands on Uzukawa's shoulders, squeezing.
"You're just jealous."
"So is this party starting or what?"
"We have some music if any of you fine ladies are wanting to dance."
Lady Hineri huffed at Tashikana's remark.
"That better not be an open invitation to any woman."
"Of course not, my beloved. Are you willing to dance with me?"
Lady Hineri smirked at him, easing her leg over the bench.
"I'll humor you because it's Christmas."
Kurumu smiled as the girl allowed her boyfriend to take her by the hand and help her up. With a broad grin, Tashikana steered Lady Hineri out to the open space caused by the moving of the tables. He placed his hands on her hips and they started a gentle sway to the ballad playing over the speakers.
"We shouldn't let those two dance alone. Shall we?"
Uzukawa huffed, brushing Oda's thin hands off her shoulders.
"Maybe after I get sloshed. Dance with that boy you've been flirting with for hours."
Oda giggled, toying with one of Uzukawa's tails.
"Sour drop. Are any young men willing to take her place?"
"I'd take you for a twirl but I have no working feet."
"Well I can't pass up an offer from the student council president."
"Former student council president, Ms. Oda."
Oda giggled, slipping behind Kaneshiro to grab the handles of his wheelchair.
"But still one of our most popular men in school. I hope you don't mind if I take the lead."
"I am at your mercy."
"Even better. Perhaps I'll run off with you."
Kaneshiro chuckled as the girl steered him away from the table.
"For that you'll need my escort's permission."
"Yea. Don't get any funny ideas."
"Oh my. Sounds like we need to do our best to make our partners jealous."
The girl giggled, parking Kaneshiro's wheelchair away from the others. She moved around in front of him, taking his hands. She swayed to the music with her eyes fixated on Kaneshiro.
"Shameless womanizer."
Uzukawa huffed at Sabaku's remark, offering him a bottle of clear sake.
"Do you need a drink?"
"I'm not jealous like you are."
The girl huffed, popping the top off and taking a hearty swig from the bottle.
"Do you want to dance, Mr. Fare?"
"Sure, Ms. Hineri. Though not good."
"Neither am I but I don't want to sit all the way over here, watching my sister."
Kurumu chuckled as Kumiko got up from her seat. She shivered as Tsukune slipped around the table, walking by her to take a seat at the end of the adjacent table. He placed his duffle bag on the floor.
"I am glad to see you, Ginei. Haiji."
"Yes. It sounds like we need to get your scrawny ass into shape."
"We are prepared to assist with your training in Hong Kong."
"Are you also coming with us to Hong Kong, Ms. Otonashi?"
"Yes. I want to help you."
"But for now, unless our little bird has an objection, I would like to have a dance with her."
Otonashi smiled softly at Miyamoto's offer, hopping to her feet. Miyamoto grinned, holding his hands out. He waited for Otonashi to hurry around the tables, taking her hands in his. They backed out to join the other dancing partners, remaining at a respectful distance.
"If he lifts her off her feet once, I'm going to tackle him."
Kurumu giggled at Ginei's threat.
"Are you jealous?"
"A little. Would the snow princess be inclined to dance?"
"Hey! What about asking me?"
Ginei smirked at Kurumu.
"You're jealous boyfriend made you quit my club."
"Since when have you let that deter you from flirting with me?"
"I'll humor your insatiable desire to be in my arms if the snow princess declines."
"That's not the issue!"
Kurumu blushed, mildly annoyed that he was going to leave her here with Tsukune.
"Will you keep your hands off my ass?"
Ginei snickered at Mizore's calm inquiry.
"And deny myself the feel of one of your most delightful assets?"
"I'll pass."
"I'll behave, Mizore. I promise."
Mizore sighed at his genuine tone, glancing at Kurumu. As much as Kurumu wanted to get away from Tsukune, she felt it would be wrong to discourage the snow girl from dancing. She smiled and nodded.
"Fine. Need to work off all of the Christmas cake I had."
Yukari snorted as Mizore stood up.
"You'll be dancing all night if that's your goal."
Ginei chuckled, walking down the aisle between the tables to offer his hand to Mizore.
"How much cake did you eat?"
Kurumu giggled as Ginei guided the snow girl over to the other dancing couples. Everyone was being so polite about the activity. No close dancing or hands placed inappropriately. Kurumu was tempted to ask Yukari if she wanted to dance.
The music rolled from one Christmas song to the next. These were by different artists which had Kurumu wonder if this was an actual compilation album or something Tashikana had made.
"I'll admit that I didn't expect to find you girls at this party."
"And I thought that we would have to go get you after this party."
Tsukune laughed sheepishly at Yukari, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I couldn't remember what time you said we were leaving. I was on my way to your suite when those two recruited me."
Kurumu grimaced, glancing at his duffle bag.
"I hope you weren't thinking of spending the night with us."
"No! If we weren't leaving tonight, I was going to head back to my dorm room."
"That's a new outfit."
Tsukune grinned at Rubi, nodding.
"My mother gave it to me. I don't know why she bothered since she doesn't have money right now."
"It's Christmas, Tsukune. Your mother would give you something even if it means borrowing money."
"You're right, Kurumu. My mom appreciated the Disney shirt and playing cards."
"I bought a gift for you, Mr. Aono. You can open it now if you like."
Tsukune laughed as Rubi scooted the package across the table to him. He pulled it the rest of the way.
"Thank you, Rubi. I didn't give you anything in return."
"It's fine. I know how much everyone cares about me."
Tsukune quickly tore off the wrapping paper. Some was still taped to the black box with the crimson leaf pattern as he wiggled the top off. He frowned, pulling out indigo silk with a sky blue pattern in the shape of waves. Setting the garment aside, he pulled out a satin, black sash and cords.
"A kimono?"
"When I was encouraged to buy one in Yukimura, I kept thinking about how nice you might look in one."
Tsukune chuckled, putting the sash and cords back in the box.
"I've never thought about owning a kimono."
"You don't like it?"
"It's wonderful, Rubi. Truly. And you've given me a great idea for a birthday gift for my mother."
"I'm glad that I could help you."
"When is your mother's birthday?"
"April fourth. She'll turn forty."
Kurumu flinched at his prompt answer to Yukari. She held back her tongue, not wanting to add that it was also his father's birthday. That had been how they had met. Kyoko's father had invited Tsukune's mother to his older brother's birthday. His mother had graduated with Kyoko's father.
"How will you get the money?"
"I think we have more pressing matters, Yukari. After we've rescued Moka, I can figure that out."
"Would you like to dance?"
Tsukune grinned at Rubi's hopeful tone. He carefully placed the kimono back in its box.
"Yes. I'll try not to step on your feet."
"That's okay. You can do whatever you want with me."
Tsukune blushed, standing up. He offered his hand, helping Rubi to her feet.
"I think we can stick with dancing."
"Yes, Mr. Aono. I am always yours."
Kurumu's heart squeezed as she watched the couple depart. She had never seriously thought of Rubi as a partner for Tsukune, but mostly because Tsukune never seemed serious about Rubi. But there were all the same signs there that she had clearly seen with Mizore. He was going to hurt Rubi too.
Swallowing down her sour thoughts, Kurumu scooted along the bench to Sabaku's side. She gestured across the table at Uzukawa whom had nearly emptied an entire bottle.
"Do you have any objections to me having a drink?"
Uzukawa snorted, setting aside her bottle. She grabbed another from the crate, popping off the top.
"Nope. I'll welcome a drinking companion since this stiff won't join in."
Sabaku huffed at the mermaid as she offered Kurumu a full bottle of clear sake.
"It was Mr. Tashikana's idea to have liquor here. Not mine."
Kurumu shivered with a sniff of the alcohol.
"Will this make me happier?"
Uzukawa grinned, gesturing for her to drink.
"Only one way to find out."
