Once done with the robes (which took a long while, with Leandra fitting for five robes plus the school ones), they exited Madam Malkin's into the busy streets of Diagon Alley.
-You'll need equipment - uncle Severus produced the supplies's list from his robes - Especially for Potions and Herbology.
-And books!- Hagrid happily exclaimed.
-Yes, and books- uncle Severus dismissed him with a wave.
They first went into "Scribbulus Writing Instruments", a shop of, well, the name, Leandra thought, kind of spoke for itself. She rejected any attempt from her godfather to buy her the most beautiful quills and most exquisite inks she had ever seen, partially because she was looking forward to spending time alone with him shopping, but mostly because she feared her godfather's generosity towards her had no limits. She didn't want to bankrupt the man, and she was sure she'd be able to control herself next time she walked into that store.
Next stop was "Flourish and Blotts". It took all of Leandra's self control to not buy more than just the school books. Harry, on the other hand, was out the store in a flash. Then, they bought their standard cauldrons, and all the material they'd be needing for Herbology. The "Slug and Jiggers Apothecary", although smelly, provided them with all the standard ingredients they'd be needing the next year.
-Now, children!- Hagrid put a hand on each twins' shoulder- I need to get you both your birthday gifts!
-Oh no, Mr. Hagrid, it's quite alright, you don't need to spend money on me- Leandra shook her head and took a step backward to look at the half giant's face (and to get his hand off her shoulder, though, that was rude to outwardly show).
-I agree with her, Hagrid -Harry forced his head in a weird angle to look at the gigantic man without taking his hand off his shoulder- It's ok, the birthday cake was more than enough!
Leandra nodded eagerly at her brother's argument and Harry soon followed.
-Non sense, kids!- Hagrid dismissed them- Now, what to get you?
Both Leandra and Harry kept talking out reasons for why they did not need another gift from Hagrid, but he didn't seem to be listening.
-I should get you something too, Leandra - uncle Severus put in, smirking at the now desperate child - And maybe if your brother wants something, I should grant him his wish too.
-I'd really rather not get anything- Harry quickly turned his attention to his soon to be Potions professor.
-Have it your way- uncle Severus casually shrugged.
-I know! - Hagrid exclaimed- I'll buy you pets! Not toads, they ran out of fashion years ago, and cats aren't my cup of tea... I'll get you owls, they're all kids want nowadays. They even carry your mail!
Half an hour later, they were leaving "Eeylops Owl Emporium", each twin with a cage and a bag of treats in their hands, the adults now carrying their other supplies for them. Harry had named his Snowy owl Hedwig, and Leandra wasn't sure after who or what, but he had had a reason for it. Leandra had named her own Snowy owl after her favourite Greek goddess, Persephone.
-You still need your wands - uncle Severus had his nose up in the school's supplies list again.
-No place to get 'em other than Ollivanders!- Hagrid exclaimed.
Leandra had began to notice he was oddly cheerful.
-Of course, Mister Hagrid- uncle Severus stated matter-of-factly - I'd bet Mister Ollivander still remembers each of our wands from when we went there to get them. And I'd also bet he doesn't fancy having wands he so carefully crafted broken.
Hagrid, Leandra noticed with some amusement, was turning red. 'Has he ever broken his wand?'.
-Now, children, hurry up- uncle Severus rushed them - Wouldn't want to wander into the wrong parts of town. Tell me, Mister Hagrid, weren't you the one who lost a Muggleborn new-coming student once when you brought her here to get her stuff?
Hagrid, to Leandra's surprise, turned even redder at that and started muttering apologies and excuses. She was now openly staring at the gigantic man, wide eyes bulging out of her eyes, a mocking smile at the risk of breaking through her efforts to hide it. Harry, by her side, looked equally buffled, although he was wide-eyed at uncle Severus, his mouth hanging open.
The rest of the walk was spent in a somewhat uncomfortable silence. When they got to the store, Leandra had to use a lot of her self control in order to not gasp. The exterior had looked rather unimpressive, with its peeling golden letters, a single wand laying on a cushion behind a dusty window serving as a showcase. Inside, it looked bare, save for one spindling chair in the corner, and the thousands of wand boxes piled up on top of one another. Boxes that currently held the whole of Leandra's attention.
While looking around, Leandra noticed Hagrid trembling slightly, clutching tightly the pink umbrella Leandra was seeing for the first time - 'Has he been carrying it around all day?'. Snape had graced the room with a small smile, looking oddly humble in the strange environment, and Harry was acting aloud all her thoughts.
Without much delay, an old man, skin white as paper, and silvery eyes sparkling in the dim light. Smiling mischievously, the man who Leandra assumed was Ollivander addressed them:
-Ah, Rubeus Hagrid! Been a while since the last time I've seen you here! Oak, 16 inches, unicorn hair core and rather bendy, wasn't it?
-Yes, Mister Ollivander - Hagrid all but whispered.
-I recall they broke it when you got expelled - Ollivander eyed him up and down - I don't suppose you've been using the bits?
-No, of course not, sir -Hagrid was looking anywhere but the man, and his grip on the umbrella tightened.
Ollivander still stared intently at Hagrid for another disconcerting second before turning to Snape. As he did, his lips tuned up and his eyes lit up.
-And Mister Snape - Ollivander beamed- Ebony, 10 inches, dragon scales core and unbending flexibility.
-As per usual, you are correct, Mister Ollivander - uncle Severus smiled.
Ollivander looked as if he might be puffing his chest out if he were a bird. Still smiling, he turned to the twins, his smile dropping a bit at the realization that not everyone had been drawn by his spetacular show of memory. Both children looked in awe, but whereas Leandra was wide mouthed and eyed, openly staring at the man before her, Harry was looking everywhere but Mister Ollivander, eyeing the immensity of boxes with the same expression Leandra was eyeing their maker.
-Ah, and Mister and Miss Potter, of course- Ollivander saluted- I wondered when I'd see you in my shop.
Harry rather abruptly turned his head in the direction of the voice, finally noticing Mr. Ollivader.
-You know our names? - Leandra asked, her eyes still wide.
-I know everyone's name, Miss- Mr. Ollivander tilted his head up a little, the way a cat would if it thought it'd been insulted - I am the best wand maker around here, modesty apart. And good wand makers know everything.
-Of course, I'm sorry, sir - Leandra bowed her head respectfully - I was caught by surprise with your immense knowledge.
Harry, apparently recovered from the "sudden" appearence of Ollivander, had now found something else to be the element of his confusion. He was now looking from his sister to the wand maker repeatedly, unable to perceive the sudden changes in mood. 'Are all boys my age like this? Jackson was insensitive... That Malfoy boy seemed to be able to hold polite conversation though. Well, at least Harry seems sweet.'
-Don't worry, my dear - Ollivander smiled again, his indignation forgotten for the moment - Many people forget I was a Ravenclaw in favor of Slytherin.
-Slytherin House should ever be so lucky- uncle Severus added.
Ollivander's smile grew at that. Harry, his gaze now locked on his sister, was frowning.
-Well, we'll give poor Mister Potter here a good scare with all our talk about houses - Ollivander chuckled- Let's get on with the wands, shall we? You see, the wand chooses the wizard. So this will be quite some time of trying out wands. Mister Potter, would you be so kind as letting your sister go first. Ladies first and all that, as I'm sure you know.
Harry, without taking his eyes off his sister, nodded his agreement.
-Very good. Miss Potter, if you'd please.
Leandra stepped forward, allowing Ollivander to take some measurements from her arms and and height. Ollivander went to the back of the shop for a moment, returning with a variety of boxes floating behind him.
-Try this one please- he said.
Leandra tried giving the wand a wave and a shelf promptly flew out of its place.
-Not this one- Ollivander hastily took the wand from her, and handed her a new one - maybe this one.
Again, Leandra gave it a wave, and a near by vase exploded. She was quick to rest the wand on its box.
-Not this one either- Ollivander already had his hand and head going for another wand when he stopped abruptly and turned to Leandra- Is that a scar on your neck?
Leandra cracked her neck a bit for him to see the scar clearly.
-I've always got it - Leandra explained- It's the same as Harry's.
-Yes, interesting - Ollivander looked from one twin to the other - I wonder...
Ollivander turned around and went into the maze of boxes once more. Leandra could hear him muttering under his breath about lost wands and needing to get the place organized. A few minutes later, he finally emerged holding two boxes.
-Try this one, Miss Potter - Ollivander handed her one of the boxes- holly, a phoenix feather's core, 11 inches, nice and supple.
Leandra gave it a wave, like she had done the other wands, and the the window's curtains shut close.
-Definitely not- he snatched the wand from her - but we're getting closer. The core is right. This one.
The wand he had handed her this time was a pretty shade of red wood, carved in a delicate swirling pattern, and light in Leandra's hand.
-Cherry, phoenix feather's core, 9 inches, solid- Ollivander said - And if I'm not wrong, which I rarely am, this will be perfect.
Leandra gave the wand a wave and a soft glow envolved her. She felt as if it was one of those warm spring days, the ones where she would sit in the backyard, enjoying the rare sun. For a moment, she really was back in her backyard, hand in hand with Em. It all disappeared too quickly, though, and the next second she was back in the shop. 'This must mean it's the right wand' Leandra thought. The look Ollivander gave her confirmed her thoughts.
-Interesting, very interesting indeed - Ollivander observed- Mister Potter, would you step forward please?
Ollivander picked the other wand again and gestured for Harry to step closer.
-Would you be so kind as to test a theory out for me?- he asked, extending the wand to Harry.
-What is so interesting? - Leandra asked, still eyeing the wand on her hand.
-One moment Miss Potter - Ollivander didn't take his eyes off Harry- Come on boy, give it a wave.
The same warm glow that had emanated from Leandra, now emanated from Harry. Leandra, finally distracted from her new acquirement, wondered where the soft glow had taken him to.
-Absolutely interesting - Ollivander stated dazily.
-Mister Ollivander, I apologize for my ignorance, but what exactly is interesting?- Leandra asked.
-The phoenix who gave the feather that makes the core of your wand only gave two more feathers for wand making this century- Ollivander explained- One of those is the one in you brother's wand core, which is not unusual in and on itself, you see, many siblings have sibling wand cores. No... What is interesting is that the other feather was in the wand I sold to the man that gave you those scars-
-Only Harry's, actually sir - Hagrid added excitedly- He was the one to take the blow and the one to save us all. Leandra's scar is a bit of a mishap. It has the same shape as Harry's but nothing magical about it.
Snape closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
-I see... - Ollivander seemed far from understanding Hagrid's logic - Well, then, the other feather was in the wand that gave Mister Potter that scar. We can expect great things from you, both of you. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named did many great things. Evil, yes, but great.
-Why, Mister Ollivander, no need to scare the kids on their first day in the wizarding world- Hagrid advised, a hand going to rest on Harry's shoulder.
Ollivander smiled at him politely, not really minding him much. His eyes rested on Leandra, the same look he had gotten when Leandra got her wand right plastered on his face. When Harry and Leandra were both done paying, he still had that same look.
-Well, that was intense- Harry stated, sighing.
-Quite a bit - Leandra agreed - Was he talking about the man that killed our parents, uncle Severus?
She noticed her brother flinching incredibly at the familiar language used.
-Yes, Leandra- Snape had turned paler, if so was possible - He was.
