B.P.D. Annual Picnic
Chapter 1
Ahh summer, hazy lemon yellow sun cresting through the tall ancient trees, occasionally landing it's rays on the green blades of grass, awakening all of Mother Nature. Just breath in that warm gentle breeze, hear the birds singing their morning songs, welcoming a new day! Blue skies above, all the makings for a gorgeous day for a picnic.
Angela Rizzoli was taking it all in and enjoying the scenery.
"Ma...ma!"
"For crying out loud, Frankie, I was having a moment, trying to appreciate the day before all the chaos!"
"Are ya sure it wasn't a senior moment?" Frankie quipped, while side-eyeing his mother, waiting for a smack upside his head.
"Frankie, it may not be my place, but she's still your mother, let her be. Besides, I find it sexy the way she gazes off into the distance." Ron came to Angela's rescue.
"Thanks baby." Angela gave Ron a peck on his cheek.
"Alright...enough, you two, let's finish this set up. I got stuff I gotta do."
"What stuff, Frankie?" Angela asked puzzled.
Angela, Frankie, Frost, Korsak and Ron agreed to be part of the committee to organize and set up the annual Boston police department picnic. This included the various stations or areas that would commence with the parlor games, that would be going on throughout the day.
Friends, family and other guests were welcome to attend the B.P.D. picnic, which raised money this year to aid mental awareness. This year it was being held at Arrowhead Lake, which was deep in the woods away from the daily bustle and grind of city life.
Frost came up behind Frankie, slapping a hand on his shoulder, grabbing his attention.
"You ready to go bro? Got that stuff to do."
"Yeah, right behind you."
"What stuff...hey Francisco, don't walk away from your mother...I'm talking to you!"
"Ma, later. I'll be back later!"
And with that they were gone.
"Ron, whatcha make of that? All this secrecy...should I be worried?"
"Don't know darling and don't care at the moment...just want your lips on mine." Just then Ron encircled Angela within his arms and kissed her. Ever the romantic.
Set up started at 8am, people started showing around 10am and the best camp sites were being swallowed up fast.
"Janie better get here soon! Maybe we should try saving her a spot."
"I don't know, sweetheart, we're talking about going up against members of law enforcement just for a premo spot. We may have pull being on the committee, we'll see."
Jane pulled up in Maura's Prius, which Maura insisted on taking. Once Jane exited the vehicle the bickering began.
"I'm telling you, Maura, you're not going to be comfortable in that get up!"
"I find it's appropriate for this very occasion." Maura tried to smooth out the wrinkles from her dress from the car ride.
"I'm just saying, it's the woods...Mother Nature...you may want to go for a hike or rough it a little."
"Rough it? Why would I go for a hike? You said it's a picnic, which in my mind incorporates a red and white checkered blanket, a wicker picnic basket packed with red cabernet sauvignon, ornate selection of variety cheeses …"
Jane interrupted Maura before discovering the rest of the contents.
"Maura...I do appreciate your attention to detail, but that's over doing it. Who's gonna want wine at a picnic? It's beer, burgers and hot dogs...and if we're lucky some bbq ribs and corn on the cob."
Ron and Angela approached the girls mid conversation.
"Janie! Good you made it! Maura...wow! You brought Maura?! Hi honey...oooh this is some outfit!" All in reference to Maura.
After releasing Maura from a hug, Angela was able to take in Maura's dress.
"Why thank you, Angela. Some thought it was too much," Maura turned a glance to Jane, "but it serves the purpose of a picnic."
Maura picked out a nice spot to sit down and demonstrate her ensemble.
"You see it fans out for the use of dining." Maura motioned to Jane and at that cue Jane brought out an apple from the wicker basket, which was another Maura 'goodie' packed away, to which Maura placed it on her lap. The dress fanned out like a makeshift tray. Yes, it was the picnic dress.
"Oh...honey, that's different," Angela deadpanned.
"Yes...really different. NOT very outdoor friendly," Jane spued sarcastically.
Jane helped Maura up and they proceeded to get the rest of their stuff out from the car. Jane's cooler of Blue Moon, her baseball gear, just in case a game was started and a tent, if she got too inebriated she was going to sleep it off, knowing she had the weekend free.
"How'd you know to get the apple?" Angela whispered in Jane's ear as they were walking to their campsite.
"I got the demonstration back at Maura's, she did the same thing then."
"So, how'd you get her to come? I thought she only writes checks for these things and prefers the more classy events?"
"Ma, Maura's not shallow. I talked it up and she's never been to an actual picnic, not like this. I thought it would expand her horizons; besides she did take me to that memorial for Garrett's brother so I'd be able to get more intel for our case. That was out of my comfort zone, so I thought I'd repay the favor."
"Yeah, but why not a Sox's game, that's more your style."
"It's not a date, ma! This is a social gathering for work and a good cause. We do work together, different fields, yes...but you know what I mean...still NOT a DATE."
"Well then, I'll put you two down for the games. You gotta have a partner."
"Wait...what about Frankie? He's actually my partner...wait, ma...MA!"
"Bye honey gotta run." Angela made a quick getaway.
Jane set the cooler down and Maura retrieved the blanket from her basket and laid it out on the ground and then organized her own things.
"This is perfect Jane. What a glorious day for a..."
"Don't say it!" Jane's sarcasm was bubbling up to the surface.
"What? Don't say what, Jane?
"PICNIC!"
"Oh, come now, are you about to possess this type of mood all day? I for one intend to have a good time."
"You will if you start with that bottle of wine!"
"Jane."
"Maura."
"Stop behaving like a petulant child."
"Fine, but you should know my mother is signing us up for the games at this shindig...so you'll hafta change outta that get up and put something on that's more flexible."
"Excuse me? Flexible? What is involved with these games? Should I be worried?"
"YES. Frankie and I usually place 2nd or 3rd never being able to beat Crowe and Martinez."
"Well that seems a little unfair."
"How do you mean, Maura...cause they're both men?"
"No...they are really two fit men."
"Are you saying me and Frankie aren't fit?"
"Frankie and I. No, I'm not implying that. It's just that they are attractive and have well developed muscle tone thus making them fit."
"Attractive? Really Maura?!"
"Jane, I do not wish to bicker with you. I did bring a change of clothes, as I usually carry an emergency bag for almost all occasions."
"I should know this by now. I'll get it for you!"
"Thank you, Jane."
