I was so excited but nervous it was my first sleepover with all the girls since Miriam was diagnosed with type one diabetes and her spinal cord injury. Miriam would arrive early so then we could go over what we would do if there was an emergency and how to change her insulin pump. Also, Priya and Abby wouldn't be able to arrive until 6:30 anyway I invited Miriam over at 5:00
DING DONG! The doorbell rang at 5:00 on the dot. I ran to open the door for Miriam. Her mom brought in her wheelchair. Tobias, her big brother, carried her in and laid her in her wheelchair. Her mom talked about what we would do if she passed out or had a seizure again. She taught us how to treat her low and high blood sugar and how to check her blood sugar. We found a sugar and carb-free sweet-and-sour chicken recipe for her. We showed it to her mom and she approved the recipe safe for Miriam to eat.
After Miriam's mother left I took her to my room and let her sleep on my bed. Abby would sleep in the guest room and I would sleep on the couch. Priya was the brave volunteer to sleep on the floor.
We talked and laughed for an hour. At 6:15 Miriam got out her laptop and showed me how to make a mixtape. "So Mei first you…" BEEP BEEP BEEP. Miriam dropped her laptop. "MEI MY PUMP JUST FAILED" she started to cry. "OMG Miriam it's ok we can change it, remember?" I assured her. "I never had anybody besides my mom change it" She sobbed. My mom came in. "Miriam, did your insulin pump just fail?" She tearfully nodded. "It's ok Miriam there's nothing to be upset about." My mom consoled her. My mom grabbed her bag. May I get in your bag and change your pump." My mom asked. "Yes you may," She replied. My mom changed Miriam's pump. "Can I please call my mom?" "I want to go home," Miriam requested. "Of course," My mom responded. Miriam's mom convinced Miriam to stay and have fun. Miriam listened and we waited for Priya and Abby to come.
DING DONG. Priya and Abby walked in. "Mir what's wrong" Abby wondered. "My Pump failed and Mrs. Lee had to change it" Miriam choked. "Oh Miriam, are you ok?" Priya questioned. Miriam shook her head. "Hey, why don't you girls play a game?" My mom suggested. "Good Idea Mom" I replied. I got out of UNO and Boggle. My mom then went back to her room. Miriam calmed down a little once we started playing games. Playing Uno we got down to everyone having one card left. Miriam laid down her last card and won. We then played boggle. I flipped the timer and we started to play. When the timer ended we showed our papers. Abby got 13 points, I got 11, Priya got 12 and Miriam got 41! "You're amazing at games Mir" I exclaimed. "Thank you,'' Miriam said."
At 7:00 my dad came out and started making dinner. "Anybody wants to help?" He asked. We all went over to help him. Miriam helped chop the chicken. Priya helped make the sauce. Abby got the waters. I helped set the table.
When dinner was ready I made sure Miriam got served first. Miriam showed us how to portion her food. I helped her bring her plate over to the table. She delivered her insulin and started eating. We then all sat down and started chatting. "Miriam, I have a surprise for you," Abby stated. "Waz is ut," She asked with her mouth full. Abby waited for Miriam to swallow. "4*Town is coming on your birthday!" She cried. "WAIT WHERE" Miriam Cheered. "Just the arena downtown." She answered. Miriam then started laughing uncontrollably. We all started laughing. After the 5-minute laugh fest, we finally finished eating.
After dinner, we got in our Pajamas and headed to the living room and watched monsters inc. We then decided it was time for bed. Priya slept in my room by Miriam's bed. I put a padded mat down for Priya so she was comfortable. I left the room and made sure Abby was comfortable. "You Comfortable Abs," I asked. "Of course Mei!" She responded
Everyone left at 10 the next day. I was glad the sleepover went well even with one little hiccup.
