Clannad – The Light In Your Heart
A Son's Beginning
As I'm sitting here flying over the Pacific so much has happened in my short life that no one would want to go through…
Mom… she's really been my hero and my rock over the last few years since my Dad's death. He was a police officer back in our old home. Now Mom really does work herself to bone to help support the two of us.
I've done what I can to help her; I'd do odd jobs around the neighborhood, cutting people's lawns, delivering newspapers… Heck at one point I made lunches for my classmates back at school and got paid for it.
Oh, you're probably wondering who I am. My name is Aaron Carter and I was born on August 8th, 1985. And of all things as if fate somehow willed it… I was born on the same day as my parents both were. It was a miracle I learned the doctors said.
But as I was saying, I never my Dad very well because I was so young back then… I can hardly remember what his face looks like… Even with so many pictures it hurts to not be so sure. My mom tells me he was handsome, strong and protective. Bu I guess as a cop and a former soldier he had to be.
One day I remember my Mom was crying, all she did was cry. I… vaguely remember walking up to her and as my Mom remembered it I said, "Don't worry Mom… it'll be okay."
Of course little me didn't realize that was the day I lost my Dad…
Life went on after that, I remember my Mom being there for both of us. She would work so long some days she'd be dead tired, and I'd find her asleep on the couch or laying across her desk. I could tell something was wrong, but she didn't want me to worry.
Growing up I was your typical school kid; I wouldn't say I was the most popular in my class but I was known. For whatever reason I loved doing so many new things. I was into sports like soccer and basketball. Other clubs like Theater, Newspaper, and so many other things. It was almost as if something would whisper to me in my ear, "Keep going, do more!"
Those days were some of the best. Doing all of those things I got to meet so many incredible friends I still have today; Seth, Allen, Caleb, Abigail and Charity. We were as thick as thieves. Always having fun… getting into trouble… and pulling each other out of trouble…
Those were happiest moments of my life. So many happy memories… and then my world changed one day when my mother told me, we'd be moving back to her hometown of Hikarizaka.
She told me it was because she couldn't find the strength anymore to live in the house of the man she missed so much… I wouldn't say she snapped, but I tell this place had it's effect on her. She couldn't stand it being so empty. Even if I was here… I guess in a way…
I reminded her of Dad…
And now I find myself about to land in a world I'd never thought I find myself in…
My name is Aaron Carter, and this is the story of my new beginning… and first how it almost came to end in tragedy….
And yet for some reason… I feel like… I should know this town…
[Hours Later…]
As Aaron finally arrived in Hikarizaka to a rather cloudy and misty Monday evening after being dropped off at his mother's old home he made his way to the door and knocked.
Turning the knob, he let himself in as he said, "I'm home." But as he looked the house was empty and dark. Then Aaron remembered how his mother had arrived at ahead of him a week before as she needed to start her new job at the hospital another town over.
As Aaron turned on the light he looked around at the new setting. Taking off his shoes and leaving them by the door as he was taught by his mother to be courteous.
Going in further he passed the kitchen and found what he thought to be his room and began unpacking his belongings and tidying up his new room.
"There… that should be everything. Now what to do?" Aaron pondered to himself contemplating his options.
He could stay inside and simply wait for his mother to get home. But given her schedule even in America he knew that she could possibly return home late or he could walk about town and take in his new surroundings.
Never one to simply stay put Aaron got up and left deciding to walk into town and hopefully find something to do. He walked the streets of the town and while it was still evening time he saw very few people out and about.
Given that despite it was summer; it had been unnaturally cold. The wind chill alone was enough to make one shiver. At the very least there wasn't any rain to make it worse Aaron thought.
Heading for a convenience store; he bought some quick meals along with a few drinks for dinner and began to head home with the groceries he had.
As he walked he couldn't help but once again think to himself, "Dad… Mom… will things change?" Aaron looked in the air as he spotted the stars begin to fill the darkening night sky.
"Will I be able to change…?" Aaron thought.
Unfortunately however Aaron's thoughts were interrupted when he spotted a middle-school age boy run by him towards the nearby bridge in what seemed to be obvious distress. He then watched as the kid made his way over the railing.
"Has that kid lost it?!" Aaron took off dropping the bag in his hand. "Kid! Stop there's no need to do something like that!"
As Aaron ran he looked in his peripheral vision he saw an older man and woman along with a young girl with long, silver hair accompanies them. The family approaches the boy and tell him to stop, but the boy refuses to let go.
"Will you still get a divorce? Tell me now or I'll jump." The boy named Takafumi, Aaron learned demanded.
The parents however seemed to hesitate to answer, and seeing his question go without a reply Takafumi moved to jump and in that moment Aaron ran and jumped over the railing into the cold river below.
But it was also in that moment that Aaron passed right by the silver-haired girl who watched him jump over the railing after her brother. Seeing this stranger for a moment almost made it seem like time had stopped.
But time stops as Aaron dived in and made his way towards Takafumi as the current dragged both of them down the river.
"Dad! Call the police, we have to help them!" The girl screams to her father in pure terror.
"Yes! Dear, call the police I'll get the car and go chase them!" The man said as he ran back to his home as the frantic wife called the authorities.
Aaron struggled against the current as he finally was within reach of Takafumi. At one point he reached out and grabbed the boy's soaked green shirt as tight as he could. He knew it would be hard, but he had to fight the current and find a place for them to stop.
Finding a clearing of gravel, Aaron fought and fought until finally he and Takafumi made it to drier ground and despite the adrenaline pumping through his system after he reached land the cold finally caught up with him and he collapsed next to Takafumi.
As Aaron went in and out of consciousness; he could hear people shouting… and then the sounds of sirens… and then… nothing…\
(Prefecture General Hospital)
Naomi Carter was working into her later shift as she was in her office looking over patient paperwork.
She took off her glasses and rubbed her heavy eyes as her fatigue from a long shift was starting to get to her.
A knock at her door grabbed her attention; it was another colleague of hers, a doctor by the name of Misato Kobayashi.
"Naomi… are you still here? Shouldn't you be heading home? Your son was supposed to arrive today wasn't he?" Misato checked on her new friend.
"Yes, I know. But I only have a few more papers to go over and I'll be going after that." Just as Naomi finished however a frantic pace could be heard outside as nurse rushed into Naomi's office.
A young male nurse by the name of Aki was out of breath and panting, "N-Naomi-sensei… it's horrible… it's… it's your son Aaron… he's been in an accident!"
"Hah!" Misao gasped as she looked to her friend; Naomi's eyes were wide with shock but then to Aki and Misato's panic, Naomi fell from her chair and seemingly passed out!
"Naomi!" Misato yelled out as she ran to her side.
Were things to end? Before they even began…?
