51: Jessica Jones [02]
—
Jessica's eyes creaked open.
She knitted her eyebrows in confusion as she blinked.
What happened?
Where was she?
That's when memories of what had happened struck her like a waterfall, making her wince at the headache, and flinch as she got worried about her family's safety. They were on a trip to Disney World. She remembered having an argument with her little brother on the way back from their trip; something about her father getting distracted, and then, there was an accident. Fire, lots of it. And… and something had gotten on her. She'd felt like she was melting; it was so painful, but thankfully, she'd fallen unconscious.
She was still feeling a little odd, and when she tried to get up, someone barged in through the door. They were doctors and nurses. Jessica only blinked in confusion. They started making small talk and got her attention, but Jessica couldn't really understand what was going on. So, she let the do as they wished. They were doctors, right? So they'd surely know what they were doing.
When she finally gained clarity, Jessica was briefed on her situation.
Apparently, their car had an accident, due to which, she was in a coma, and her family was really injured—though Jessica did notice a little change in the nurse, who was telling her everything, demeanor. Jessica didn't have time to mull over it as she was really tired, so she slept soundly.
Next time when her eyes opened, however, she wished they hadn't. Someone was talking about how her family didn't survive. She wasn't meant to hear this, she knew they'd kept it from her, but now that she knew, her mind went blank. And before long, she started weeping.
As she couldn't really move out of here yet, as she was quite weak, Jessica had all the time needed to cope with this. And just like she'd expected, she was soon briefed on the real situation. That her family was dead. And that she was, apparently, being adopted by Alissa Jones and her husband.
Jessica didn't really care about that.
Her mind was solely focused on the death of her family. She regretted so many things. She regretted not playing with Phillip, her younger brother. She regretted not spending more time with her family. She regretted so many things.
And for their deaths…
She blamed herself. If only she hadn't argued with Philip. If only she'd been more mature in that situation. Her dad wouldn't have gotten distracted, and her family would've been very much alive.
Jessica regretted it so much.
But she couldn't do anything.
So, she blamed herself.
"Hey," a voice snapped her out of her misery, and she looked at the seat beside her bed. Jessica almost jumped—even though she couldn't, technically—and her cheeks flushed a bit even in her state.
"P-P-Peter?!" She stuttered. "W-what the fuck are you doing h-here?"
"Oh," Peter looked sad. "Should I leave?"
"NO!" Jessica fumbled. "I-I mean you can s-stay. I don't mind. I'm just surprised you're even here."
Peter looked confused, "Why wouldn't I be here?" he asked her.
"We haven't really talked… like, ever," Jessica said, softly, calming down.
"Well," Peter scratched his head. "I was passing by; thought I'd drop by to say hello."
"Oh-okay."
"Anyways," Peter smiled; her blush grew, though she hoped he'd mistake her as being sick. "How are you feeling? I heard about your family…" he sighed. "And I somewhat sympathize with you. Since, well, you know, Uncle Ben died; so, I know how it feels. Then agai-"
"Peter?" Jessica asked suddenly. "Can I… can I hug you for a moment? Please?" she asked softly.
He made a face, "I mean, sure?" then, he spread his arms, and Jessica dove in, hugging him tightly. She didn't know where she got the courage to ask such a thing from him, nor did she know how she was able to be so bold in front of her crush. But… she just wanted some strong arms around her.
In his arms, Jessica started weeping silently.
"Um, Hey? Jessica?" Peter said awkwardly. "Are you crying?" he asked gently, placing a hand on her back, as he started patting gently.
Jessica's arms tightened.
Peter, on the other hand, was not only awkward in this position, he was also not able to breathe properly due to the strength she was using. It was confirmed right there and then, she was not a human anymore and was some kind of a human mutate, just like Peter. Though he'd admit, her powers were different than his, since he was a spider, and she was not.
After a few minutes of weeping—during which, someone, a woman to be more precise, opened the door to look at them, and Peter just gave her an awkward shrug. The woman, who Peter assumed was Jessica's adoptive mother, nodded understandingly, and left—Jessica finally let go of him, feeling a lot better as she wiped her tears she looked at him, flustered.
"I-I'm s-sorry!" she apologized. "I dirtied your clothes-"
"No problem," Peter smiled carelessly. "At least you feel better now, right? It's sometimes better to just cry than keep everything in."
Jessica nodded.
"So, um, Jessica-"
"You can call me Jess," Jessica interrupted.
"Okay," Peter gave her a charming smile. "Jess, I think it's time for me to leave. Someone wants to meet you."
"Okay."
"I'll come again, though." saying so, Peter left, nodding at the woman outside before leaving for home—he still had so much to do, after all.
Jessica just stared at Peter's back as he walked out of her room, feeling butterflies in her stomach. He… visited her! He fucking visited her!
She promptly forced herself not to squeal as she saw a woman enter.
"Hello, Jessica." Said the woman. "I'm Alisa Jones." She smiled.
From there on, they spent their time talking. Though Jessica was a bit skeptical about the woman who'd be her new mom, she got a bit comfortable after talking with her.
"By the way," Alisa said, looking as if she was a paparazzi ready to get a scoop. "Who was that handsome young man?"
Jessica blushed.
"H-he, he's a f-friend." Jessica stuttered. Actually, were they friends? They hadn't really talked, like, ever.
"Oh?" Alisa raised an eyebrow. "Boyfriend?"
"No!" Jessica flushed. "He is not! He already has a girlfriend!"
Jessica would admit though, when she found out that Peter and Gwen were in a relationship, she was quite sad, and had even cried. But she'd gotten over it a bit. Though it still stung that he couldn't be with her instead…
"Oh? Already has one, you say."
Needless to say, the ice between the duo was broken after this conversation, and Jessica liked this new mom of hers quite a bit.
As it turned out, Jessica Jones—yes, that's her new name now—could go study in Midtown High as her mom and dad lived near Jessica's old neighborhood. They were able to re-enroll her to Midtown High, so Jessica was quite thankful for that.
Anyways, Jessica's new family consisted of her adoptive mother, Alisa Jones, her adoptive father, Mr. Jones, and her adoptive sister, Trish Jones.
(A/N: As you can see, this version of Jessica is a mixture of both the comics and the series.)
Jessica was fine with her new family, her mom was nice, and her dad was nice too, but Trish… she and Jessica hadn't really had time to talk about anything, so there was still ice between them. Though Jessica hoped that her adoptive sister was a nice person too.
Today, Jessica was in school after a long time, and she was not enjoying the attention she was receiving at all.
She was walking through the hallway when three girls stopped her.
"Is it true?" one of them asked. Jessica turned to look at her.
"What?"
"Is it true that you were, like, in a coma?" the girl asked.
"Uh…" Jessica wasn't sure how to respond to that.
"'Cuz the rumor is you were."
"Yeah," Jessica agreed, seeing no harm in answering a simple question.
"So, uh, like, what was that like?" The same girl asked again, which made Jessica frown a little, though she eased her frown just after.
"It was like…" Jessica sighed. "…nothing."
"Uh,"
"Oooooohkay." Another one of the girls drawled and they walked away, giggling to themselves. "Did you hear her? She said it was 'nothing'!" they crackled.
Jessica made a face; what was wrong with her feeling nothing?
The girls walked up to a group of boys; Flash was a part of said group.
"Nothing?" Flash asked once the girls told him what happened. "What does that mean?" he asked to no one in particular, a bit too loudly, and Jessica was perfectly able to hear her. "Shhhhh!" one of the girls tried to calm him down.
"Holy shit! that's—oh man!" But Flash only exclaimed louder. "Can you believe it?" the other girl said.
"Freak coma girl," Flash jeered.
"Flash, she'll hear," a girl, who seemed sensible, said. But Flash wasn't listening, he smirked, walking up to Jessica.
"Rrrrr!" he imitated a zombie. "Freaky coma girl!"
"Dude, don't… come on." A girl tried to stop him.
"Rrrrr!" Flash laughed. "Coooooommmmmaaaa! Cooooommmaaaa!"
Jessica had had enough, her face scrunched, and her stomach lurched. She turned around to face the fucker and, with a snarl, pushed him away, with enough force that sent him tumbling behind.
"Fuckers!" Jessica growled. "Seriously, all of you! Die!" she sniffled. "Just die!"
As Flash stumbled back into his friends, Jessica was already out. She ran and ran, cursing everyone, before she stopped and sat on a desk, weeping silently.
As she cried there, silently, someone sat beside her.
"You're being pathetic, you know that?"
"What the fuck-" Jessica looked up, ready to curse whoever it was, but stopped once she noticed it was one of the third years.
"Flash is a jerk," said she. "I broke his nuts once; so I can tell you with certainty that he isn't anything special. I saw you easily pushed him, it shouldn't be difficult to beat someone like him up, so next time, don't be pathetic and bust his nuts or something."
Jessica would admit, the girl in front of her was pretty. Really pretty.
"I'm Felicia Hardy, by the way." Felicia offered her a hand. "Nice to meet you." She grinned, sitting beside her before tackling her in a side hug.
"You're a strong girl, you know that?"
"Um," Jessica was flustered.
"Oh, hush, don't be so blushy now, I'm not eating you, am I?" Felicia said, pouting.
"O-okay…?" Jessica's blush only grew before settling down.
"I didn't catch your name-"
"Oh, Jessica Campbell- um, Jones, actually," Jessica answered.
"Okay, Jessica Campbell Jones." Felicia grinned. "How about you go on a date with me? I'll make your mood positive in no time…"
Jessica was weirded out a little, so she just stood up, and said her goodbye.
"A-actually, I just remembered I have got something to do. So, See you later." Saying so, Jessica ran off.
Felicia only grinned, her eyes glinting as she looked at the retreating lamb.
(Note: Don't worry; no yuri, I promised there wouldn't be any. If you see any advances from Les, Bi, or Gay characters, just think that I'm just being true to their character for the sake of it. There won't be any yuri, or yaoi at all!)
Jessica ran and ran, she wanted to go home and rest. She wasn't in the mood to remain back in school anymore. First, the fuckers were harassing her, and now, there was a third year asking her out, a girl no less!
As she ran though, Jessica tripped and closed her eyes, fearing she might fall. But she didn't, and instead, when she finally opened her eyes, she was far above in the sky. The city was below her, and she was floating as if she were in space.
Jessica's eyes bulged out, and she let out colorful profanities before falling down in a river.
"Shit! Ahhh fuck! Shitfuckshitfuckaaaaaaarrrghggghhhhghgh" (*Gurgling drowning sounds* lol)
