(A week later – Evening – S.T.A.R. Labs - Cortex)
Caitlin and Cisco were helping Barry as he did his nightly rounds around the city. Naruto and Sakura were working on their own things as per usual while Frost just chilled out, currently, Barry was chasing 3 motorcyclists. When Naruto and Sakura were hit with a rush of memories.
"Well, that's new. I'll have to do some testing/experimenting with that one." Naruto commented before they went back to what they were doing
"Oh, Barry, there's an intersection coming up. Hurry!" Caitlin said as they watched live feed from a satellite
"This should slow 'em down." Cisco said as he changed some street lights to red causing the 3 motorcyclists to split up causing Barry to stop at the intersection
"Guys, which way?" Barry asked
"Left./Right." Caitlin/Cisco said causing them to look at each other trying to come up decide
"Right./Left." Caitlin/Cisco said before Dr. Wells wheeled himself in
"Stop! You both hear you're telling me two different things, right?" Barry asked
"Barry, listen up. Listen carefully. Here is what you're going to do. Now the Queen is trying to make it to the bridge, but I have a shortcut—wait for it-." Dr. Wells instructed as Barry started running, awaiting Dr. Wells instructions "And left—left—right—"
"-I see her!" Barry announced as he began closing in
"Make her go west before Fremont." Dr. Wells instructed
"Okay, how?" Barry asked
"I'd recommend a detour." Dr. Wells suggested as Barry began moving stuff setting up a detour
"Now, the King is headed for the entrance to the interstate." Dr. Wells announced before Barry created another detour
"What entrance?" Barry asked with a smirk
"Atta boy." Dr. Well said as him, Cisco, and Caitlin watched the live feed to see all 3 motorists ran into each other "Check—" before Barry sped in and took their keys
"Got the keys." Barry said
"—Mate." Dr. Wells finished before a whole platoon of cop cars pulled up as Barry headed back to S.T.A.R. Labs
A few seconds later he sped in laughing "Give me some!" as Cisco got up to give him a high five
"Efficiently done, Mr. Allen." Dr. Wells congratulated
"We need a picture." Cisco said
"Pretty sure rule number one of having a secret identity is not taking pictures of yourself in your super suit without a mask on." Barry pointed out
"Oh, come on, please!" Cisco pleaded "This is just for us. This is just to document all this." Before he handed Barry his phone
"Who knows? Maybe people in the future will want to know how all this happened." Dr. Wells commented
"All right, well, if you want the future to have the whole story, then, we all need to be in it." Barry conceded
"First, let me put on some makeup?" Caitlin half asked half told
"The future doesn't care about your makeup." Cisco commented as everyone minus Naruto and Sakura gathered for the picture
"Mm-mmm." Barry agreed "Wait what about Sensei and Sakura?"
"All I am is your teacher." Naruto said without look up from what he was working on
"That changes nothing. Now, get over here and get in the picture." Barry ordered causing Naruto to let out a sigh before he paused what he was doing and walked over to where everyone was gathering for the picture
"Come on Honey, picture time." Naruto said before Sakura paused what she was doing and walked over to Naruto, standing by his side
"Alright now. Big smiles." Barry said before everyone gave their best smile "Three…Two…One." Before Barry sped over for a split second to be in the picture before going back to catch Cisco's phone "Ha!"
"Does that count as a selfie?" Caitlin asked before Naruto and Sakura went to resume what they were working on
"Absolutely." Barry answered before handing Cisco back his phone as he walked up to Dr. Wells "Thanks for talking me through things out there."
"My pleasure." Dr. Wells said "Well done. I have to say it was a bit of a rush feeling like a—"
"A hero." Barry said finishing his sentence
"Yeah." Dr. Well said
"You're pretty good at it." Barry said before walking off
(The next day – S.T.A.R. Labs - Cortex)
Naruto, Sakura, Cisco, Caitlin, Frost, Barry, Joe, and Dr. Wells had gathered in the Cortex to go over what Dr. Wells know about the perpetrator.
"Hartley Rathaway possesses one of the finest scientific minds I've ever encountered." Dr. Wells stated as they looked at Hartley's information that was on screen
"Any ties to Rathaway Industries?" Joe asked
"His grandfather founded the company, his father expanded it, and Hartley here was set to inherit the throne." Dr. Wells explained
"What happened?" Barry asked
"He came out to his parents." Caitlin answered with a shrug "Old money, old values."
"They were estranged when we met, but, brilliant. I couldn't have built the particle accelerator without him" Dr. Wells added before Barry looked between them all
"You guys have never even mentioned his name." Barry commented
"That's because Hartley had a challenging personality." Caitlin explained
"What she means is he was mostly a jerk. But every once in a while, he could be a dick." Cisco explained causing Joe to laugh
"He was always out to assert his dominance and intellect, always got on my nerves." Naruto commented
"Let's just say that Hartley, like many outliers, had trouble relating to his peers." Dr. Wells commented
"Yes, but he was always your favorite." Caitlin pointed out
"The chosen one." Cisco added causing Dr. Wells to click his tongue in disagreement "He referred to himself like that."
"So if you two were so close, why would he target you?" Joe asked turning to Dr. Wells
"Hartley left S.T.A.R. Labs about a year ago after we had a…a disagreement" Dr. Wells answered
"About what?" Joe asked causing Dr. Wells to look up at Joe before Barry stepped in
"Look, don't worry. We'll stop him. I won't let him hurt you—any of you." Barry declared before turning to Joe "Let's get back to my lab, all right?" before he started walking away followed shortly by Joe
"I could've gone my whole life without seeing that jerk again."
(Later that day – S.T.A.R. Labs – Cortex)
Caitlin had called Barry telling him that Hartley had shown up at his parent's business building. Naruto was working on something in one of the labs as was Sakura when suddenly Naruto sensed another speedster. Frost was just chilling while Caitlin and Cisco manned the Comms. Barry had just arrived on scene and knocked Hartley over.
"It's over, Rathaway." Barry said
"Oh, so you know my name. I know some names as well. Caitlin Snow. Cisco Ramon. Harrison Wells. Naruto Uzumaki. Sakura Uzumaki." Hartley said "I can hear the radio waves...Emanating from your suit. About 1900 megahertz. Are they on the other end listening? Will they hear you die?"
"No. They're gonna hear you get your ass kicked." Barry answered causing Hartley to chuckle
"Okay." Hartley said before he blasted Barry with sound waves sending him flying, tumbling to the ground
Barry got back up and ran over to the cop cars, throwing their batons at Hartley causing him to raise his arms in defense before Barry ran up and pulled Hartley's gauntlets off throwing them to the ground.
"Looks like you're not as smart as everyone says." Barry taunted with a smirk
"Smart enough to have figured you who Harrison Wells really is. You see, I know his secret." Hartley said causing everyone to look at Dr. Wells and with that Barry cuffed Hartley before taking off towards S.T.A.R. Labs
(10 seconds later)
Barry and Hartley were greeted by Naruto, Cisco, and Caitlin as soon as the elevator door opened, arms crossed.
"Being scooped up by a man clad in head-to-toe leather is a long-time fantasy of mine, so thanks." Hartley said as they walked out of the elevator "Well, well, well, most of the gang is here. Where's Sakura, Naruto? And You've lasted a lot longer than I would've thought, Cisco."
"Sakura is in one of the labs working on something." Naruto answered
"And you didn't last ten seconds agains The Flash." Cisco responded
"I was thinking of calling myself Pied Piper." Hartley said
"Hey! I assign the nicknames around here. Although that one's not bad." Cisco said before Hartley turned to Caitlin
"Caitlin…Never did get that wedding invite." Hartley said before Barry shoved him forward towards Cisco
"Shut the hell up!" Barry said before Cisco caught him and shoved him forward
"Stay in front of me." Cisco ordered before they headed off toward the pipeline with Naruto following
(A minute later)
Cisco had shoved Hartley into a cell and closed the door while he used the control panel to run a scan for foreign objects.
"The scanner is detecting foreign metallic objects in your ears. Take 'em out." Cisco ordered
"I can't. I suffered head trauma when S.T.A.R. Labs exploded. My hearing was severely damaged. Without these, I'm in pain you can't imagine." Hartley explained as Caitlin entered the room, walking up to stand besides Naruto "We all lost something that night."
"If you could hear the radio waves emanating from The Flash's suit then your hearing wasn't damaged but heightened, that pain that you are experiencing is probably because your ears are now extremely sensitive to sound and you are hearing things besides what a normal human can hear. It happened to me when I gained Superman's super hearing. Although I was able to adapt very quickly due to my background so I am not in constant pain. The head trauma could have also caused tinnitus." Naruto said "Would you like for Caitlin to repair the damage that the head trauma caused?"
"What could she do I have gone to countless doctors and the best they have been able to do is give me these implants?" Hartley asked
"You would be surprised at how much we have all changed while you were gone." Caitlin answered "Now do you want me to repair the damage or not?"
"If you would that would be great. But why are you being nice and helpful to me?" Hartley asked
"Not everyone deserves to be in pain." Caitlin answered "Cisco open the door." Before Cisco hit a button on the control panel opening the door to the cell "I'm going to need to you take out the implants first."
Hartley slowly took out the implants in his ears with a groan/moan before he handed them to Caitlin who handed them to Cisco before her hands developed a green hue. As Caitlin got closer Hartley backed up.
"What the hell are you doing with your hands?" Hartley asked
"It's called Medical Ninjutsu. It's something I learned from Sakura." Caitlin answered before she brought her hands up to Hartley "Now the sensation you are about to experience might feel odd but just let me do my thing." Before she got to work on repairing the damage done by the head trauma
After about a minute she withdrew her hands and stepped back, Hartley simply looked at Caitlin in shock as he watched the doors to his cell closed.
"My ears. There's no more ringing, no more pain." Hartley commented "Thank you, Caitlin. For whatever you did." Before he took in his surroundings "Very clever re-purposing the anti-proton cavities into confinement cells. Wells' idea, I'm sure."
"How can you go back to being a jerk so quickly after what Caitlin just did for you?" Cisco asked "And for the record it was mine, actually."
"Hartley, don't make this more difficult than it has to be." Caitlin pleaded
"I forgot. You don't like emotions. They're messy." Hartley commented just as Dr. Wells entered the room wheeling himself up the ramp to the cell
"Enough, Hartley." Dr. Wells said "Give us a minute."
"Fine, but I'll be back to take care of his cell. Oh and Hartley, nice try with the E-bombs." Naruto said getting a shocked expression from Hartley before he started walking away along with Cisco and Caitlin all of them headed for the Cortex in a hurry to listen to Dr. Wells and Hartley's conversation
"See you soon, Cisco." Hartley said
"Not where you're going." Cisco said
(About 20 seconds later – Cortex)
Naruto, Cisco, and Caitlin had just entered the Cortex to hear the end of the conversation where Barry was waiting.
"I almost forgot…I told your pet I know your deep, dark secret, Harrison." Hartley said "Have fun letting him in on that one."
"Now that's an interesting one." Naruto said "Wonder what that secret it."
(30 seconds later)
Naruto, Cisco, Caitlin, Barry, and Sakura were chilling as Dr. Wells entered the cortex.
"I assume you were all listening." Dr. Wells said, the silence speaking volumes "Well, Hartley was telling the truth. I have not been honest with you. With any of you." Before there was a long pause "The accelerator…Hartley warned me that there was indeed a chance that the accelerator could explode. His data did not show 100% certainty, just that there was a reisk, but it was a real risk. And yet I made the decision that the reward…that…everything we could learn and everything we could achieve, that all of that…simply outweigh that risk. I'm sorry."
With that Caitlin got up "Then the next time you choose to put our lives, and the lives of the people that we love, at risk, I'll expect a heads up." And with that Caitlin walked out followed by Cisco, Naruto, and Sakura all going off to do their own things, Naruto heading back down to the pipeline to transport Hartley and his cell to the PPD.
"After the explosion, when everyone else left you…Caitlin, Cisco, Naruto, and Sakura stood by you. You owe them more than an apology." Barry said
"They might soon get more than that what with Hartley so intent on sending me to the next world." Dr. Wells said
"What are—that wouldn't make it right with them." Barry said before there was a brief pause "You broke their trust. Our trust." Before Barry walked out
(30 seconds later – Pipeline)
Naruto entered the pipeline getting Hartley's attention.
"Time to lock you away for good." Naruto said as he activated his Rinne Sharingan and he walked up to the cell, soon a swirl started to develop
"Wait, wait, wait. What are you doing?" Hartley asked
"Sending you to my pocket dimension where we keep all the other evil Meta-humans. There you will live the rest of your life in solitude." Naruto answered, just as the swirl was about to engulf Hartley's cell
"If you send me there you guys will never learn what happened to Ronnie." Hartley said in a last-ditch effort to avoid his rapidly approaching fate
"What do you mean what happened to Ronnie?" Naruto asked curiously "I know he's not dead but I don't know what happened to him."
"If you lock me away forever you will never learn the truth." Hartley answered
"Alright, you have piqued my interest." Naruto said before he deactivated his Rinne Sharingan "What do you want in return asides from not being locked away forever in my pocket dimension?"
"Immunity." Hartley answered causing Naruto to give him a raised eyebrow silently asking for him to elaborate "I tell/show you want happened to Ronnie and you let me go free."
"And what assurance do I have that you won't simply try and cause more trouble or harm anyone at S.T.A.R. Labs if I let you go?" Naruto asked
"Well based on how I've seen Caitlin has changed I can only assume the rest of you changed in one form or another. So it would be idiotic to go after you guys without knowing what you can do as I have no idea of knowing if I will come out victorious." Hartley answered "Do you want to know what happened to Ronnie or not?"
Naruto shrugged his shoulders "Alright, count yourself lucky as this is the only chance you're going to get at not getting locked away forever." Before he mentally opened the door to the cell as Hartley stepped out as Naruto stepped to the side "Lead the way." And with that they walked out of the pipeline
(A couple minutes later – Outside S.T.A.R. Labs)
Naruto followed Hartley outside to the side of the building.
"You said you were going to show me what happened to Ronnie. Ronnie died inside the building. What are we doing out here?" Naruto asked
"What do you see?" Hartley asked causing Naruto to look around
"Buildings, walls, dirt." Naruto answered before he spotted a silhouette on one of the walls "Do you mean this?" as he walked over to the wall
"Now you've got it." Hartley answered following Naruto
"What is it?" Naruto asked
"It's called a bomb shadow." Hartley said "They found these all over Hiroshima after the first atomic bomb was dropped. This shadow belongs to Martin Stein."
Naruto then turned to Hartley "The accelerator explosion did this to him?"
"You really don't see it, do you?" Hartley asked "You're gonna kick yourself when you figure it out."
"Hartley I'm not in the mood for games." Naruto stated "Either show me what happened to Ronnie or you are going back into that cell."
"Alright, alright. But for that, we need to go to CCPD. They have the evidence there." Hartley said and with that, they headed for CCPD
(15 minutes later – CCPD)
Naruto and Hartley had taken the S.T.A.R. Labs Van to CCPD.
"Alright, we're here what do you need from here?" Naruto asked
"We need to get access to the evidence and stuff they confiscated from S.T.A.R. Labs." Hartley answered
"Well, the best way to do that away from prying eyes would be in Barry's forensic lab." Naruto stated before he got out of the Van followed by Hartley
They easily snuck past everyone and made it into Barry's lab. As soon as they entered Barry's lab Naruto got on the computer.
"CCPD confiscated everything from S.T.A.R. Labs after the explosion. Video, audio, and traffic cam footage." Hartley explained
"Okay, and?" Naruto asked getting impatience
"I saw Martin Stein the night S.T.A.R. Labs went boom. He walked right past me. You see, Stein specialized in transmutation. Molecular transmography. Quantum splicing. Taking two things and making them one." Hartley explained
"What are you getting at Hartley?" Naruto asked
Hartley just sighed, shaking his head "Let's go to the videotape, shall we?" before Naruto pulled up the camera footage they were looking for, Naruto played the video.
"Okay, stop." Hartley ordered causing Naruto to pause the video "Now zoom in a few clicks." Naruto zoomed in on Martin showing that he was carrying some orange glowing orb "Now advance it frame-by-frame." Naruto advanced it frame by frame and watched as the explosion washed over Martin
"His eyes. They turned white, just like Ronnie's." Naruto stated as he kept advancing the video frame by frame
Eventually, something came onto the screen getting Naruto's attention.
"Now stop there." Hartley ordered "In the mass of energy. Looks like—"
"Ronnie." Naruto said finishing Hartley's sentence as he continued to play the video
"And Professor Stein." Hartley added as Naruto had an epiphany
"The dark matter merged them together." Naruto stated
"Explains why Ronnie hasn't seemed quite like himself lately. It's because he's not. He's Martin Stein." Hartley commented "I figure that makes us even Stephen now." only for Naruto to nod
"You kept up your end of the bargain so you can go free, but if you cause trouble again, The Flash will stop you and you will be locked up for the rest of your life." Naruto warned before he teleported back to S.T.A.R. Labs
(S.T.A.R. Labs)
Naruto appeared in the Cortex where Cisco and Caitlin were at the main console helping Barry do his rounds. Sakura was working on something in one of the labs with Frost chilling nearby.
"I know what happened to Ronnie." Naruto announced getting everyone's attention
"And how did you come across this knowledge?" Caitlin asked
"Hartley showed me." Naruto answered
"What do you mean Hartley showed you? Isn't he locked up in the PPD?" Cisco asked
"Well I was going to do that but before as I was transporting him and his cell he pleaded for me not to, saying that if I did I would never learn the truth about what happened to Ronnie." Naruto answered
"And what did that dick want in return?" Cisco asked
"Immunity. In exchange for the information, he wanted to be set free. But I did warn him that it was his last chance and if he caused trouble again and we caught him then he would be locked up for the rest of his life." Naruto answered
"Well, I guess it was a fair trade." Caitlin said "So what happened to Ronnie?"
"Apparently the particle accelerator explosion merged him with Professor Stein, hence why I sensed 2 sets of thoughts when we went looking for him." Naruto answered
