Wow, there are a lot of reviews for me to cover. Serves me right for fucking up my upload schedule. I finally got to turn in that damn research paper, though. I still have another semester of school to start so there's that. Anyways, let me cover the reviews here.
Pixie Duck: You know, I didn't even want to think about how Mordred was born. I'm just gonna say Guinevere was rule 63'd and they had Mordred that way.
GrandSaberEMIYA: Actually, Siegfried, Atalanta, and Jackie were all considered as servants appearing in this fic, but I was already ripping so much off Apocrypha I didn't want to do it too much.
Anonymous: As shown by Shirou's ability to trace arrows and being able to dual wield Gae Buidhe and Gae Dearg, Shirou is more than capable of doing normal tracing. Shirou's sticking to one noble phantasm at a time because if the Knight's Order of the Church caught wind of his ability to trace, he would immedietely be drafted and he won't be able to save as many people when working for the government.
Guest: I'm sure everyone is having their own respective mental breakdowns about Shirou, Artoria, and their past lives. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Guest: Golden eyes was just what I used to describe Boudica's eyes. It's nothing special.
jhosmhir26: Not exactly. While Tsumukari Muramasa utilizes every blade in UBW at once, Shirou's sword can only do one at a time.
Thank you for all the reviews! I encourage you to keep on leaving them!
Chapter 19: The Church of Pendragon
Artoria didn't know whether to be angry or shocked. For there to be another Pendragon… She wanted to deny it, but her True Name Discernment was almost infallible. The woman, Gray, on the other hand, had completely frozen/
"Gray!" Both of the servants were snapped from their stupor as they heard another voice. Artoria turned to see a cloaked person, a woman judging from her voice, ran up to them. "Why did you—"
The woman froze as soon as she turned to Artoria. She flipped her hood up to reveal short, green hair that went down to the top of her shoulders and purple eyes. The woman then knelt before the servant.
"My queen. I wasn't informed of your return," The woman said. Her voice was shaky, but Artoria didn't know if it was from awe or terror. "It is an honor to meet you."
"Rise," Artoria said, still holding herself in front of Elizabeth. "Identify yourself."
"I… My name is Annette, my liege. I have no family name," The woman replied. Her command seals were clearly showing on her palm. She did as she was told, but she didn't make eye contact. Artoria's eyes flickered over to Gray. She was also looking away. Her eyes were shining, as if tears threatened to form at any second.
"Do you know anyone else who has similar tattoos on your wrist?" Artoria then asked.
"Yes, my liege," Annette nodded. "There are six others. Sir Michael has already had all of us summon our… servants."
Artoria could tell that the woman was still getting used to the concept of heroic spirits. She even thought she detected disgust in the young woman's voice.
"Alright, please lead me and my master to them," Artoria said with a small nod.
"Of course," Annette bowed before turning. "This way, your highness."
Gray was freaking out. The grail informed her about Artoria and her exploits here, but she didn't expect to see her so quickly after being summoned. Emotions flowed through her faster than she could comprehend them. Sadness, anger, confusion.
"Gray," The queen's voice snapped her out of her stupor. Gray turned to look at her before looking away. Her expression was gentle. Something she never imagined the original owner of her face to look at her with. "If you don't mind, can you please explain to me how another Pendragon walks the earth?"
"What?!" Both Elizabeth and Annette turned to face her. Annette's slack jaw, however, instantly clamped up before looking away.
"I… I don't want to…" Gray muttered. Artoria's brow furrowed.
"Gray, please—"
"Lay off it!" Everyone jumped when the cube Gray was wearing as a necklace spoke. "Gray will say what she wants to say. I don't want you poking into her business, capiche?"
"Add…" Gray gently put her hands on the small cube. Despite Add's teasing personality and his favorite pastime of picking on Gray, it seemed he still cared deeply for her.
"Sir Kay…" Artoria said with wide eyes. "Sir Kay, is that you?"
"Eh… kinda?" Add responded. "I'm a copy of Sir Kay's personality. Morgan made me to seal Rhongomyniad."
"She what?" Artoria clenched her fists until they were white.
"Woah, chill Art," Add said, his tone getting anxious. "Even if Morgan made me, she doesn't have a hand in me anymore. Gray's been taking good care of me. She's a good girl, Kay?"
"Sir Kay, was that a pun?" Artoria grumbled.
"Yes…?" Add replied. Artoria just heaved a sigh.
"You really are Sir Kay," Artoria sighed. Add stifled a chuckle as they continued forward.
"Psst," Elizabeth flinched as she heard the noise. She turned to look at the source of the sound to see Gray looking down at the cube she had around her neck with a confused look. "Yeah, you. Blondie. Come here."
"What do you want?" Elizabeth snapped as she walked over. She was a bit irritable, considering they have been walking for four hours without a break. Gray flinched at Elizabeth's tone and the young girl couldn't help but ease up a bit. She still had so many questions, but Gray was obviously uncomfortable when talking about her past.
"You're Art's master, right?" The cube, Add, asked. Elizabeth nodded. "Can you do me a huge favor?"
"What is it?" Elizabeth asked.
"Can you look over her for me?" Add said, his tone a lot softer than the other times Elizabeth heard the cube's voice. "I don't know how she is now, but from when I remembered her, she had… a little trouble empathizing with people."
"She did?" Elizabeth tilted her head. From the years Elizabeth had known the spirit, she had been very aware of her feelings and had always taken steps to make sure she was comfortable during their interactions.
"Yeah. It took me a long time to figure it out," Now Gray was looking down at Add with interest. Elizabeth looked up to see Artoria several meters ahead of them talking with Annette. From this point of view, she did seem a little oblivious. Especially to Annette's discomfort. "A king does not understand human emotion, or something like that. Although she was an excellent king, she came off as cold and calculating. She almost didn't feel human to some of us."
"I… see," Elizabeth looked at Artoria again. She could barely imagine her caring and loving mentor figure being so… cold. "Wait, did you say king?"
"Yeah," Add replied. "Back where Gray and I come from, a woman couldn't rule at the time, so Art had to hide her gender. She was known as King Arthur rather than Queen Artoria. That was a shock when we first got here."
Elizabeth felt like she should've said something, but she didn't. After all, what could she say?
"Also, can you keep Art of Gray's case?" Add then said.
"Add…" Gray looked extremely uncomfortable.
"Oh, shush, you. Let me do this for you, alright?" Add addressed his wielder before focusing his attention back on Elizabeth. "Gray's story isn't exactly a happy one. Hell, I can barely say it without it pissing me the hell off. We'll talk to Art when she's ready."
"I… okay," Elizabeth nodded. As much as she wanted to know too, she was taught to respect the wishes of others. "I'll do my best."
After a couple more hours of walking, the four reached a village at the base of the Northern Peaks. The mountains were truly a sight to behold. Artoria looked up and smiled softly. The last time they had been here was when Jason, the previous wielder of Excalibur, went to the mountains to fight a dragon. Although dragons were much more common here, they were also much weaker than the phantasmal beasts that Artoria was used to.
"We're here," Annette declared. "Let me lead you to the others."
"Many thanks, Annette," Artoria nodded. Annette flushed and looked away.
"It's only natural to do your bidding, my liege," Annette responded softly. Artoria nodded. She didn't get to know much about the young woman, but she seemed determined. Artoria almost hoped for Annette to be a bad person. Even though she was forced to be impartial, she had a bias towards Shirou and his faction. It would be easier to hate the opposing team if they were evil, but… Annette seemed like a nice person. Everything she said was genuine and she was nothing but kind to the servant, if a bit anxious.
As the two entered, Artoria tensed as blue motes of light started to gather in front of them. She put her hand on her sword as a man appeared. He had dark brown hair with matching eyes. He had a bow almost as long as him and he exuded power.
Arjuna, The Awarded Hero, is what Artoria's True Name Discernment provided her. As she was not a spirit of the Throne, she was unaware of his legend, but from what she could tell, the man was a dangerous foe.
"Assassin, I see you have returned," Arjuna nodded respectfully. He then turned to Artoria and Elizabeth. "Greetings. If Assassin has brought you here, then I believe you are not hostile. I am the Archer of this war."
"It is an honor," Artoria dipped her head. She saw Elizabeth flinch and mimic her movements as she did. "I am Artoria Pendragon. I was assigned to be the mediator of this war. I have come to meet with your faction and explain the stipulations of this war."
"Stipulations?" Arjuna tilted his head. "I see. Come with me then. I shall take you to where we reside."
Artoria nodded and the five of them made their way to what seemed to be like a large church. It didn't look like one of the many churches of Vivian Artoria had been to in her lifetime. That meant…
Oh no… Artoria thought to herself. There was only one other major religion in the country of Astarda. The Church of Pendragon.
"We are here," Arjuna said. He walked up to the door and knocked in a synchronized pattern.
The door opened to reveal a hooded man. As soon as he locked eyes with Artoria, he immediately got down on one knee.
"M-my queen!" The man said, awe fully covering his voice. "I… you were summoned!"
"It seems to be that way," Artoria remained stoic. As much as she disliked the Church for the crimes they committed in her name, she had a job to do.
"Bring the other masters," Arjuna said. The man looked up. "Artoria needs to announce something to them."
"R-right away!" The man stood up and ran off. Artoria just sighed. She turned to look at Elizabeth, who was physically shaking.
"Worry not, Elizabeth," Artoria pulled the young girl closer to her. "They will not hurt you again. I will not allow it."
If Artoria had turned to look at Gray, she would see the young woman's lips purse and her eyes narrow in rage.
It didn't take long for six more cloaked people to appear. The seven masters had formed a half circle around Artoria.
A few of them had their servants with them, but not all of them. Artoria looked at the four servants one by one. Gray and Arjuna stood behind their masters respectively. Arjuna's master had wavy, orange hair and green eyes.
Standing behind a man with shaven black hair and purple eyes was a woman of Egyptian descent. Her hair went all the way down to her feet and she wielded a black staff. Artoria was able to discern that this woman's name was Nitocris.
The other servant that had entered had white hair and red eyes. She wore a red uniform with white pants. Standing in front of her was her master, a woman with brilliant red hair and gray eyes. Artoria looked at the name above her head and saw that her name was Florence Nightingale.
"I thank you all for coming," Artoria stepped up to the center of the half-circle and all of the masters bowed.
"It is an honor to be in your presence, my queen," The man in the center, a man with blond hair and blue eyes, spoke. "My name is Michael Bromson and I am the leader of the Church of Pendragon."
"Well met," Artoria bit back a harsh reply. "May I have the rest of your names?"
"Xavier," Nitocris' master was the first to speak up. "It is an honor and privilege to serve under you."
"My name is Giselle," Arjuna's master then spoke up. "I have dedicated my life to carrying out your justice. It is nothing short of a miracle to be in your presence."
"Carmen, my liege," Nightingale's master replied. "Your holy light shines bright, my queen."
"I am Jackson Vanders," A man with brown hair and yellow eyes then introduced himself. "I am your sword, my queen. Use me as you wish."
"Ophelia, my queen," A woman with purple hair and blue eyes looked up to introduce herself. "This pupil greets you with enthusiasm."
"Annette…" Annette finally introduced herself. Her tone was refined and serious, but her body was still shaking. "We have already met, but it is an honor to still be in your presence."
"Thank you," Artoria nodded. "Now, if you may call your servants, I have something to announce."
Those who did not have their servants nodded. Within the next few minutes, the other servants appeared. One by one, Artoria learned their names. Along with the four she had already known, Georgios was the first to arrive, appearing behind Jackson. Artoria could immediately tell that the man was a dragon slayer. The second to arrive was Scathach, who Artoria could only assume was Lancer. The twin spears she held reminded Artoria of Gae Bolg.
Finally, the last servant appeared and Artoria audibly gasped. He had red hair and golden eyes. His armor looked inexplicably like Archer's and Artoria could only describe the red cloth on his head to be a holy shroud. What really set Artoria off was the name above his head. When she looked, she almost rubbed her eyes? Was she hallucinating? No… The True Name Discernment didn't work like that. She eventually had to come to terms with the truth.
This man was Emiya Shirou.
Wow, that was a lot to throw at you. Thanks for putting up with for Shirou, I'll be explaining a bit about him and how he ascended to the throne in the next chapter, but more will be explained as the fic goes on.
