A/N: Hello dear readers. So, I know that I projected the release of this chapter at the end of last month, but unfortunately, I ran into another bout of sleep issues that really screwed up my daily schedule, which in turn, caused an even greater strain on my writing and how long it took me to actually finish it. Also, I've been facing another mild case of writer's block and that too has caused me to write slower than I have in the past. Hopefully, neither issue lasts for long and I can get back onto a somewhat more normal writing cycle with more consistent releases.

As always, a special thank you to SweetsDreamer for taking the time to beta this chap. I wouldn't know what to do without her.

Summary: Kurapika contends with the after-effects of their encounter in Odaria. While they prepare to leave on their next mission, he and Chrollo both realize the struggles they face, and how to handle them together.

The next day, Kurapika found himself staring idly into the swirling contents within the mug he held while he stood inside the small kitchenette of their hotel room. For the longest, he was lost in deep thought as the events from the night before replayed over and over again in his mind as it seemed that Kurapika couldn't expel the image of Debron's face or the man's laugh from his memory.

Both seemed to continually haunt him, even during the moments when he was alone, which made Kurapika swear that he could literally hear the man.

It was unnerving as everything about what transpired while he and Chrollo were in that maniac's mansion only seemed to dig deeper into his psyche. There wasn't anything about it that didn't leave him with everlasting scars, which had built up over time, but even then, Kurapika had managed to continue moving on.

And was only made possible because of Chrollo. If his lover hadn't given him any incentive or encouragement, he might not have made it as far as he did. Kurapika sighed and took a sip from the cup, the caffeine helping to calm his already wracked nerves. Dwelling on it made it difficult to get past, and he knew that it would only hold him back, yet, forgetting was nearly impossible.

He even recalled to mind what happened during their excursion to Cysteria and encounter with the merchant, Corthoes El'basa. The fact that he completely lost every shred of composure, even restraint when the man attempted to make off with the Scarlet Eyes, practically frightened Kurapika.

What made it worse was how far he had been willing to go, even to the point that he nearly killed the man. Thinking about that also made him concerned.

Again, Kurapika sighed. His eyes fixed on the mug as he tilted it around in his grip almost absentmindedly, which nearly caused the liquid to spill from its confinement. Yet, he ensured that not a drop managed to break free.

How he was able to ensure such an outcome, Kurapika still couldn't seem to understand. It was hard to forget that while he was Debron's captive, he had been inclined to kill even then. That aspect alone concerned him, for Kurapika had never entertained such ideals unless it was to unleash justice on the Spiders to instill his revenge.

Now that he no longer planned on bringing an end to the Genei Ryodan since Chrollo was his lover, the very notion of considering murder for any reason - even his own safety - was more than appalling.

Which ultimately clashed with the very philosophy of the Spiders.

Of course, Chrollo was aware of that and had by no means attempted to push the idealism onto him, but coming to accept it was an entirely different shade of color. Just thinking about it left him torn between embracing his darker side and letting go of his moral convictions.

After draining the remainder of what coffee was left in his mug, Kurapika set it down in the sink and turned, then his eyes instantly landed on Chrollo's. The older man had just walked out of the bathroom - albeit with only a towel around his waist - as he was drying his hair, and Kurapika immediately realized that he was staring.

Heat instantly crawled up his pale skin, and he tried to distract himself by staying focused on his lover's visage.

Even that was hard to do as Chrollo looked simply divine. Several times Kurapika had to keep his gaze from traveling down over the older man's bare chest and taut abdomen, or even from trying to see what lay beneath the towel. It was hard to believe just how splendid his lover really was.

At least the sight kept him from going back into being stressed and feeling dejected. The last thing he needed was to fall into any kind of emotional slump. God knows he had dealt with enough as is.

Kurapika kept his attention on those dark but mollifying grey eyes. No matter how many times he tried to figure out what made them so enticing, yet placating, he ended up back at the same conclusion. There was no reason to elucidate on why as nothing other than compassion and love always shone behind them.

Just like he saw in them now.

"Is everything alright, babe?" Chrollo questioned when he noticed Kurapika standing there, and partially clothed or not; he approached his lover without hesitation. They were used to being naked around each other anyway. Instantly, Chrollo reached for Kurapika's chin and cupped it gently. He could tell the younger man was troubled.

Kurapika was aware that he was unable to conceal his turbulent emotions from Chrollo, but he didn't attempt to shy away from his lover's touch. Instead, he looked deeper into those attractive eyes. "Not really," Kurapika confessed, and clearly, worry seemed to etch over Chrollo's visage. "I've just been thinking about everything that happened recently as it's been difficult contending with the outcome." He paused, lips curling to form a faint smile. "But having you here helps to ease some of the tension from it."

So much had transpired, and the remnants of it left Kurapika with picking up the pieces. It was hard to comprehend just how much pain and tragedy he had been forced to suffer through, but when it came down to it, he had survived each one.

Life was a struggle with its constant ups and downs, never knowing what may come next, each day bringing its own set of challenges. Still, Kurapika had gotten through them all. It would take time for the new wound he received to heal, and would more than likely leave behind a nasty scar. Yet, there was so much beauty in the world that it made the hardships worth enduring.

The reflections of his past at one time propagated the future, which Kurapika had been willing to accept.

Until Chrollo became the one to change all that.

"I know it's hard," Chrollo began, his demeanor calm and expression soft, "as I know you have been through a lot, particularly after what happened so long ago." He paused while carefully examining Kurapika's features. Reopening old wounds was something Chrollo didn't relish doing as he knew it was a sensitive topic for his lover. Causing Kurapika to have a relapse now was an aspect he wanted to avoid. "But you're stronger than this. I've witnessed it. Your convictions, mettle, and tenacity are something to be admired. Also, the ambition you harbor has proven time and again that you have the desire to persevere." For a moment, silence fell between them as Chrollo allowed the weight of his words to sink in. When he saw contemplation accented behind Kurapika's pretty blue eyes, he hoped it had been enough to prove the worth of his testament. "Though it makes me glad to know that I'm able to help you in any way I can."

Chrollo leaned down and pressed his lips gently to Kurapika's own, his actions ceasing any chance for the younger man to reply while fortifying the promise he made. Keeping his lover happy and content was essential to him, but the aspiration to erase Kurapika's grief stood above all else.

And just like Kurapika, the past also haunted him. Ever since the young blond had managed to break down his barriers, and draw him in, Chrollo was thoroughly reminded of the mistake he made.

Often he was visited by the ghosts of those who had fallen victim to his heartless desires; the many faces of the Kurta constantly flashing through his mind.

Long ago, those visions would have been enthralling, now it only made him regret the decision even more. Chrollo still hated how it was his own greed and selfishness that ultimately led Kurapika down a path of hate and despair. He would right his wrongs and do it protecting his lover in any way possible.

He temporarily pulled back from Kurapika only to dive right back in, this time with a little more zeal than the last. No matter what, Chrollo swore to do whatever he must to ensure that Kurapika never knew sorrow again.

When he finally broke the kiss so they could both catch their breath, Chrollo finally saw the slowly kindling fire that he knew burned deep within Kurapika's heart and soul.

"How is it that you're always right?" He questioned, the austerity evident in his voice, but immediately softened after that. "Yet, it's a truth I cannot deny." Kurapika lifted one hand to allow his fingers to purchase amid Chrollo's raven crop. He was still amazed by how easily he had fallen for the older man but was glad he did nonetheless.

Gingerly, Kurapika let the tips slide through the soft downy, impressed by how pristine it was even after dealing with months of harsh environment. Regardless of how much they moved without staying in any one place for too long, Chrollo had managed to take good care of it. Even his scent was always of fresh pine and musk. The soaps and shampoos Chrollo used kept him smelling pleasant despite the constant travel.

A smile formed on Chrollo's lips. "Perhaps it's because I speak the truth." He added coyly and watched Kurapika's expression turn skeptical. It wasn't to say that he was always honest. For a criminal like him, being virtuous was akin to expecting a fish to survive outside of water.

When it came down to Kurapika, however? It was an entirely different matter altogether.

Chrollo was quickly able to tell his lover didn't quite believe him, but Kurapika was someone who did need a little convincing in some circumstances.

"And why do I find that to be more hyperbolic?" Kurapika commented while raising an eyebrow. It was hard not to be pessimistic. Still, he had to admit that Chrollo had always been honest.

His lover's remark amused him, and Chrollo grinned so that his teeth were exposed. "Babe, you should know I would never lie to you." He responded and stroked his thumb over the side of Kurapika's jaw. "I think that I have proven that much." The tip slid its way just over the side of those plush lips, and Chrollo was reminded of just how soft they were.

Kurapika hummed at how factual Chrollo was, and for a moment, he could see the depth of his lover's devotion. Indeed he had been nothing but genuine. "You have," Kurapika confirmed, his eyes closing as he leaned more into Chrollo's touch. "So I know you wouldn't. Not to me, at least. Though I know, that isn't the same for other people."

Over their time together, he was able to witness exactly how sincere and caring Chrollo turned out to be as he got to see a side to the older man most others never saw.

Perhaps, in the beginning, the leader of the Genei Ryodan was nothing but a heartless monster with no empathy or humanity to speak of, now, Kurapika couldn't have been more wrong.

It made his love for Chrollo deepen every day.

"Oh, I would never dream of it when it comes down to you, Kura," Chrollo purred as he enjoyed the way his lover reacted. While Kurapika may be rigid and pertinacious, it didn't change the fact that he adored the Kurta's aggressive, decisive nature. "As for anyone else, not including my Spiders, you are correct to assume that."

Most of the world, Chrollo had attested that he didn't care for. After the way he was forced to live while being treated like garbage, it was hard to see it any other way. Getting rejected by society left an everlasting negative impression, and it had long since polluted Chrollo's views.

The only one to even remotely alter his jaded mindset was Kurapika.

In reality, Kurapika had saved him like he had saved Kurapika. More and more, it was proven by just how similar they were. Like reflections of each other and every reason to be together. They were the perfect match.

Nothing else summed them up better than how intermingled their lives had become.

It was destiny.

"Why am I not surprised to hear you say that?" Kurapika taunted, his attention back on Chrollo. "Nevertheless, I am just glad that you are here."

There was an intermittent pause as Kurapika thought about everything that happened and how it all turned out.

As he looked back, Kurapika again was made fully aware that he wouldn't have gotten as far as he had without Chrollo. Or that his life had improved for the better.

Chrollo casually moved his hand from Kurapika's chin to stroke over the younger man's cheek before finally reaching over to gently take hold of his silver earring.

The dazzling ruby seemed to glitter in the morning light, precisely like Kurapika's golden hair, and it made him look so breathtaking. "It pleases me when you say that," Chrollo remarked and carefully toyed with the delicate crystal between his fingertips, "but I am glad to be by your side also."

Again, Kurapika found himself momentarily at a loss for words as everything Chrollo had spoken finally sunk in. It was strange being in a relationship with a person like him. A thief, extortionist, and someone with hardly any regard for the lives of others, yet, Chrollo made him as though he were a king. No one else made him feel exalted as Chrollo did, and now that he had a taste of its splendor - and spoils - Kurapika found that he was unable to turn back.

Not that he cared to anyway.

Kurapika knew he was addicted. Even then, Chrollo had become too special for him to fathom being without the older man. It was hard at times comprehending the reality he had come to know, and still, there wasn't anything that Kurapika wished to change.

Some people were able to perceive their future in the long term, and have a greater understanding of what they desired to have.

For him, it was different. Kurapika had only viewed life as temporary and fleeting, that nothing was worth persevering. Well, after what happened to his clan anyway. And yet, the very person who had been the catalyst for invoking his jaded mentality was the very same one he couldn't live without.

He leaned more into his lover's gentle hand. Whenever Chrollo touched him, it had a placating effect. Kurapika sighed at the comforting sensation of his earring being played with. "I honestly never thought you would feel that way," he paused and rose a hand up to meet Chrollo's before coming to rest over his, "or that you would actually say it." He added while cupping his over it.

Chrollo watched him curiously as the statement was rather odd. He had never expected Kurapika to be so opaque when it came down to his romantic confessions, but he assumed that Kurapika needed reassurance from time to time.

Maybe his lover was afraid of being left alone again, and confirmation that wasn't the case helped to stave that view.

"Oh?" He questioned, but never ceased his activity of fiddling with the silver chain. Chrollo was amazed by how pretty Kurapika looked with it. "What makes you say that?"

There was a brief interlude between them as he contemplated over what to say, but Kurapika knew he had to explain the reason for his words to Chrollo. "Because I had wondered if I was truly your equal."

Surprise crawled over Chrollo's features, and Kurapika saw those stormy greys flash with sheer disbelief for mere moments before they returned to normal. "Kura," Chrollo whispered, and his fingers slipped forward as they came to rest just behind his lover's ear while his thumb laid against the front. The silver chain remained caught between his index and middle. "You should know by now that you are. While you are mine, nothing will change the fact that I see you as my equal."

Despite what his lover said, it took a few seconds for Kurapika to process the information. Regardless of what Chrollo had told him, there wasn't anything deceptive about it. His lover had a track record of being honest, which gave Kurapika even more reason to trust the older man.

Considering the circumstances between them, Kurapika had the slightest feeling that he was wrong about his suspicions, but now, hearing it made him glad that he was. Kurapika didn't know what prompted him to speculate on whether or not Chrollo saw him as someone to be tantamount to, but he no longer had any compunction to believe that way.

It broke that particular mindset and continued to make him content with the relationship.

"Oh, I don't doubt that." Kurapika searched his lover's face, and what he saw added even more merit behind Chrollo's statement. "You've made it quite clear that I am yours, but by the same token, it makes me happy to know that you think if me no less due to it." He quietly turned slightly, just enough to reach Chrollo's palm, and kissed the skin there softly.

His hand was slightly calloused from many years of overuse - among other things - but Kurapika loved everything about him. Chrollo was indeed the person he needed most.

"From two different paths, yet one and the same. It was as destiny had decided, so go forth and never look back. We may be gone, but you will always live on."

The words seemed to flow abruptly through his mind, and it caught Kurapika entirely unawares. With it came understanding, but the voice was fleeting and was gone just as quickly. Again, he sensed the familiarity of it.

Was his dearly departed clan supporting him as his mother had said? If they were… there was true comfort in knowing that.

"As you should." He heard Chrollo say, and Kurapika turned from the older man's hand to stare into those eyes once more. "I may be possessive and won't be pleased if someone were to lay their hands on you, but that does not indicate there are any differences between us." Chrollo drew his hand away, the sensation of Kurapika's lips still fresh on his skin, and let it come to rest at his side. "I will always value you, babe, as you value me. Nothing will change that." He then bent down and kissed his lover gently, the taste of him ever indulging. Chrollo smiled when Kurapika kissed back in kind.

Even then, it had left him taken aback, but Kurapika only sensed sincerity from Chrollo, just like he had ever since the Spider leader began pursuing him. Time and again, Chrollo continued to prove him wrong, and Kurapika was able to see no further need to question his lover's perception of him. It was evident that Chrollo loved him deeply, which enhanced his own feelings for the man. He could definitely see himself with Chrollo long into the future.

One where they hopefully became unified, had a family and grew old together.

Kurapika couldn't blame him for killing Debron either. The man was vile and malignant, like cancer trying to spread, which made him even more grateful to be away from someone so detestable. And though his thoughts had turned dark several times since the incident, not once had Kurapika found it revolting. Which still surprised him.

Chrollo's influence was invoking change in him.

"Hearing you say that brings me comfort," Kurapika responded finally after having fallen silent, and the smile on his lover's face invoked his own. "It makes me see why I love you as I do."

Chrollo couldn't help but let his smile broaden at what Kurapika said as the young Kurta never ceased to deliver surprise after surprise. He really was exceptional. "I am glad that it does," Chrollo hummed and reached over to brush a few strands of hair from Kurapika's face. "Never think otherwise." And he leaned in to kiss Kurapika again.

The rain had continued pouring down after spending hours pummeling the village, the prattle of raindrops on the wooden roof sounding like drum beats as it steadily came down.

Kurapika turned away from the window. There was nothing to see aside for the slightly muddy roads as most of Odaria's inhabitants had already sought shelter from the relentless onslaught. Although the chilly deluge had eventually subsided, from the dreary looks of the sky that was filled with rolling thunderheads and flashing lightning, it wasn't about to stop any time soon. The notion made Kurapika groan.

Across the room from him, Chrollo had taken residence in one of the wooden chairs and had busied himself with reading. His lover apparently had decided it was the best way to pass the time while they were waiting to leave. They had already discussed their next plan and objective, which the trip would take them off the Yorbia continent to Arukan and finally to the city of Balor.

It was there Chrollo had informed him that Shalnark had tracked down a flesh collector who possessed a pair of Scarlet Eyes.

Despite current circumstances, Kurapika was eager to leave. Especially after all that happened with their prior target. He could only imagine what kind of reaction would get stirred up once people realized that Debron hadn't been to the village lately.

There was no telling if anyone would get sent to his manor to investigate, or if they would manage to stumble on the lab and find his body.

One thing Kurapika was sure about; he didn't plan on sticking around long enough to find out.

"You seem more than just restless," Chrollo commented, and Kurapika's eyes locked with his. "You should try to relax. There isn't much we can do until the rain lets up. Our blimp isn't scheduled to leave until later today, and that's if the flights haven't been grounded due to the current weather conditions."

Chrollo lowered the book so that it rested in his lap and observed Kurapika carefully. Again, he noticed the moderately dark patches forming beneath his lover's eyes along with the etchings of fatigue on his visage. Even those golden locks of his could not hide it.

He knew what happened the day before had taken a toll on Kurapika, as it was evident by his current demeanor. Chrollo had suspected the impact had been substantial from how little sleep his lover had gotten. Kurapika was practically fitful the whole night through, which had prompted him to hold the younger man tightly.

Now, Chrollo was able to tell it had left a lingering imprint on him.

"That is hard to do when our next target has been located, and we're just wasting time sitting around here," Kurapika fussed, then decided to go make himself another cup of coffee to calm his nerves.

Kurapika's frustration came through rather vehemently, and Chrollo exhaled sharply. When his lover got fixated on something, he tended to get particularly obsessed, and sometimes to the point that it invoked Chrollo's concern.

It was clearly evident the same was happening even now.

"Not by choice, I assure you," Chrollo responded as his fingers slid absently over the book's pages. "While I get your reasoning for wanting to depart quickly, the weather is making that rather difficult." His hand ceased moving, and instead, Chrollo carefully set the book aside without closing it as he intended to continue once the matter was settled. "Though I have to say you're too hard on yourself, babe."

Kurapika returned to the common area with a cup in hand, and he took a sip from its contents. "I know that it isn't by choice, yet has the weather ever stopped you before?"

He eyed Chrollo almost critically, yet there was only a mix of austerity and concern in the older man's expression. There was no denying that Kurapika felt an urgency to get moving as sitting still allowed his mind to wander back towards those god awful events with Debron.

Yet, despite that, perhaps his lover was right. He had been hard on himself since they began their search for the eyes, and it had only gotten worse since. Kurapika stared into the liquid within his mug.

It was hard watching his lover appear so dejected, but Chrollo really wanted to pull the younger man out of his funk. Maybe once they left Odaria, the situation would get better. "Honestly, no, it hasn't. Still, we have several hours until we need to be at the airport, and I would much rather not have to ride out to the next city in the rain. We did come here on horseback, not in a car."

Chrollo immediately fell silent as he observed Kurapika while attempting to guesstimate his lover's reaction, but then something else crossed his mind in the process.

"Even so, I wouldn't-" Kurapika started to say, and was immediately interrupted when Chrollo raised his hand to quiet him. He snorted at the notion, but his focus never wavered from his lover.

"There is no use in arguing about it, love," Chrollo spoke up as he leaned forward slightly. "Regardless, we have time to wait, and hopefully, the rain will let up soon." He watched as Kurapika's lips twisted downward at the notion, but resumed speaking anyway. "And if it doesn't, we will still leave with enough time to reach the airport and catch our flight."

The instance halted Kurapika from progressing forward with his claim as it was evident that Chrollo was right. Making an effort to travel now would only slow them down and make the jaunt counterproductive. "Fair point." He conceded, albeit reluctantly, then took another draw from his mug.

Drinking the coffee helped as the caffeine aided in keeping him from losing his head.

It surprised Chrollo that Kurapika conceded so quickly as he expected his lover to put up more resistance than he had, but a smile still worked its way across his lips at the notion. "Good." He remarked and reached over to pick up the book again. "Now that's settled, perhaps you should read as well to pass the time, or it has been a while since you last spoke to your friends. Maybe contacting them would ease your mind?"

The sudden mention of his friends gave Kurapika pause, and he almost stopped what he was doing. It was something he hadn't expected Chrollo to suggest as he was well aware of how strenuous his lover was, plus there was friction between him and Leorio.

For Chrollo to propose such an idea, Kurapika couldn't help but wonder if his lover was becoming more accepting of the people he cared about while fostering trust between them.

Not to mention, it was also further proof that Chrollo understood he desired no one else.

"Perhaps you're right," Kurapika affirmed before proceeding to finish off the remainder of his coffee. The more he thought about it, calling them made sense. It had been some time since he and Chrollo left Yorknew, and getting his friends up to speed was ideal. He had also promised that he would retain better contact with them, unlike he did in the past. "I'm going to go for a walk through the inn while I make the call," Kurapika added after discarding his cup before going to retrieve his phone. "I promise not to be gone long."

Chrollo nodded as Kurapika made his way toward the entrance, though he only smiled as he pulled the book into his hands once more. "Take whatever time you need, babe." He commented, then heard the door click shut after that.

"Kurapika!" Gon's voice was loud over the receiver, and for a moment, he almost thought his friend was standing beside him.

The young boy sounded cheery as always, and it brought a smile to his pale lips. "Hey there, Gon," Kurapika responded. It felt like ages since he had last spoken to his friend. "It's good to hear from you. How are Killua and Leorio?"

"Yeah," Gon chirped, "it has been a while! Everyone here is doing fine. Killua and I have been training really hard to master our Nen. As for Leorio, he has kept up with his studies at med school." There was a pause before Gon resumed his speech. "What about you and Mr. Lucifer? Any luck finding more pairs of the Scarlet Eyes?"

He breathed deeply. There was so much to tell Gon that Kurapika didn't know where to begin. Once he gave the boy all the details - especially about what happened with Debron - Kurapika was sure Gon wouldn't be too happy.

Kurapika closed his eyes. "Where to begin?" He questioned.

It had taken longer than anticipated to explain everything in great detail to the young boy, but once he was finished, Kurapika thought his head was going to explode.

All had gone well. Until the encounter with the mad scientist made it to Gon's ears. At first, his friend seemed to take it in stride, but when he brought up the details where Debron had nearly cut him open - which was thwarted thanks to Chrollo - the anger that came through was almost unbearable.

Kurapika knew that Gon was passionate and loyal when it came down to those he cared about, but even he appeared to get carried away. It was easy to tell from the heat that was present in his friend's voice.

Yet, the conversation was nothing compared to how terribly complicated it became afterward. Kurapika thought it couldn't get much worse until Killua ended up on the other line. He thought the silver-haired Zoldyck was going to rip him an entirely new asshole. Kurapika had a hard time contending with the god awful headache he incurred after the discussion.

He was grateful that Leorio wasn't present at least. The situation would have gone from bad to worse and increased in difficulty by tenfold. He knew that Leorio would have never let him hear the end of it had he been there with Gon and Killua.

They were enough to deal with minus that aspect, although the tension he sensed from the two young boys had been distressing as is. Kurapika sighed. Once he told them it was Chrollo who ultimately saved his hide, all they did was drill into his head how damn lucky he was that his lover had been with him.

At least he had made decent headway in collecting more pairs of Scarlet Eyes, which counterbalanced the negative outcome of his more recent excursions. Gon and Killua sounded pleased with that notion. It made Kurapika feel a little less terrible for making them worry.

However, there were still twenty-five pairs left to find, and there was no way of knowing what kind of perils he would face along the way. Up to the current, Kurapika knew he had been relatively fortunate to exit each outcome practically unscathed - minus the slight injuries he sustained from his clash with the crazed scientist - but who knew what types of situations he would face later on? Everything rode purely on chance.

Hard as it was, the fact remained the same. Kurapika wasn't about to stop until he had retrieved every last pair of the Scarlet Eyes and returned them to Lusko, where he could lay them to rest. He understood his friend's unease with all the potential uncertainty that he faced, but even then, one thing Kurapika admired about them was their unwavering support. Regardless of the trials ahead, they knew that nothing was going to impede him from achieving his goal.

Other than urging him to be a lot more careful in the future, both Gon and Killua seemed to be satisfied with the aspect that Chrollo would be there to watch his back. Which Kurapika readily assured them of.

For quite some time, he stood there, staring at the darkened screen on his phone as if he could see through the thing, and Kurapika felt a slight pang in his stomach. What he had gone through was only the beginning. There was no way he could falter, and the best he could offer anyone was his strength and resolve to make it through each outcome alive. Remaining steadfast was the key.

Though he had no intention of giving up, and for his friends - especially Chrollo - he would win, and he would survive. Succumbing definitely was not an option.

Kurapika drew in a sharp breath and placed the phone back into the pocket of his pants, then began heading back to the room he shared with his lover.

It was late afternoon when the rain had finally let up enough so that they could begin making their way towards the airport and catch their flight. Kurapika hoisted himself into the saddle on the dabble mare and patted her neck gently. She gave a loud neigh before craning her head so she could gander at him. The gesture made a smile tug at Kurapika's lips, and he offered her a few sugar cubes as a result.

Across from him, Chrollo was settling into the saddle of his jet black steed. The horse pranced a few times before the older man was able to calm the animal.

The sun had started to break through the thick bed of clouds that appeared to sit low in the sky, their grey depths getting slowly pushed back by the steadily growing light, which professed a smoother journey. Kurapika awaited outside the stable for Chrollo as his lover finished making last-minute adjustments to ensure their saddlebags were attached correctly.

Before long, they were trekking across the sodden plains fresh with mud towards the city named Shaladar, where they would find the airport which their flight was scheduled to leave from.

Silence had settled between them as they rode, and Kurapika allowed himself to become lost in thought. Of course, he had found his mind wandering back to the events of the previous night, and each time Kurapika had to stop before he became too engrossed, or too entrenched, and instead, redirected his focus back to something more pleasant. Like how Chrollo held onto him afterward.

Which Kurapika could practically recall so vividly. The strength of those protective arms around his body, and the way those sturdy fingers carded tenderly through his hair. The remembrance helped soothe Kurapika and reminded him that he wasn't alone. No matter the circumstance, Chrollo was always by his side.

Only a few short hours had passed when the edges of Shaladar made its presence known on the horizon. Soon, they were riding past lush, rolling hills rich with foliage, and green pastures. Several farms dotted the areas in the distance, and Kurapika could easily make out the shapes of cows and chickens as the animals seemed to lazily graze about. It wouldn't be much further until they reached one of the farms closest to Shaladar as Chrollo had planned to sell their horses to a nearby farmer before continuing onward to the city. Where they were going, the horses couldn't follow.

Kurapika was going to miss the gentle mare. The horse had a good temperament and gave him little trouble since acquiring her. Although Chrollo had stolen the animal after they left Dalry, he had grown quite attached.

Now, it would only be a little longer before he would have to inadvertently part with the horse. The aspect brought a faint downward twist to his lips.

"Is something wrong?" Kurapika turned to see Chrollo watching him curiously, the older man's attention honed intently on him.

Evidently, he let his emotions show as there wouldn't have been any other reason for his lover to question him. Kurapika wondered what Chrollo's opinion would be if he was told the issue was over the prospect of losing the horse? Would his partner scrutinize him for it? Or would he sympathize? The indecision made it even tougher on him.

Kurapika trained his eyes forward. "No. I'm fine. Just thinking about what to do once we reach Balor."

He decided against mentioning his opposition about selling the horse, and instead, focused on the current task at hand.

Chrollo kept his eyes trained on Kurapika as his lover's tone and posture spoke to the contrary of what he said. The younger man was never one to be a rather good liar, and he suspected there was more to it than what Kurapika let on, but he didn't see a need to push the issue.

"Alright," Chrollo responded, and he resumed leading them across the expansive planes. If his lover didn't wish to talk, then there was no use discussing it further. Kurapika knew to come to him if he wanted someone to listen. "We should reach Shaladar in roughly a half-hour. About three kilometers away is a small farm. We will stop there to sell the horses and walk the rest of the way."

The confirmation was enough to make Kurapika wince as Chrollo was adamant about parting with their horses. He patted the mare's neck consolingly as it seemed the animal knew what they were talking about, and gave up on ever convincing Chrollo to decide otherwise.

It was probably for the best.

They had a blimp to catch anyway.

He nodded. "Hopefully, the trek on foot won't take long."

"It shouldn't. So long as we keep a decent pace." Chrollo added factually.

When the sun slipped lower in the western sky, Kurapika looked towards the silhouette of Shaladar as it sat in the distance. Partially dried grass crunched beneath his boots as he strode forward while gauging the span between the farm Chrollo picked and the city. He tried to forget about the mare as his lover made the exchange, to which the farmer thanked them kindly and promised to care for the animals. Then, he and Chrollo were on their way.

The sky had become a vibrant painting of bright reds and oranges when they both arrived at city limits.

"From my calculations, the airport is about twenty minutes from this point. At the very worst, we can take a cab to get there as I am sure Shaladar has them."

Kurapika briefly glanced toward the flashing city lights as they came into view before turning to look at Chrollo. "When exactly is the blimp scheduled to take off?"

The sound of his lover's voice drew him from surveying the outskirts of Shaladar, and he spared a glance at Kurapika. "Six pm." He responded.

"It's probably best that we do then," Kurapika commented as he picked up the pace behind Chrollo. "Walking there won't leave much time for us to check-in and reach the boarding dock before they stop taking passengers." The possibility of missing their flight bothered him, which only added to the underlying urgency he felt. "Taking a cab would be more efficient and make the most sense."

Chrollo stopped when they reached a particularly busy street inside the city, and he stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Fair point." He stated and proceeded to seek any available cabs. Procuring a car would be rather pointless as the distance to the airport was short. "There is only slightly more than an hour before takeoff, and the sooner we get there, the better."

Eventually, he located a cab whose meter wasn't running, and after putting on his most charming smile, Chrollo had managed to convince the driver to take them. Shortly after that, he and Kurapika were in the back as they made their way to the airport.

Both of them had gone quiet for the duration of the trip, which gave him ample opportunity to observe Shaladar. It appeared the city was a massively thriving metropolis that seemed expansive as it was great.

Many large buildings lined the streets. Some were designed intricately, some tall enough to touch the sky. Copious lights illuminated the sidewalks and storefronts while signs as bright as the stars announced they were open for business.

Shaladar was as grand as other cities of its kind, but it also held a majesty all its own. Even for one that housed a multiplex society with an ever-present ebb and flow, Shalandar was no less impressive. It was hard not to be in awe of something so wondrous.

It held Chrollo's attention, although he tended to not let himself get too immersed in the mundane. While the city spoke of greatness, unless he were to find something specific of value to plunder, there was no use staying focused on it.

Also, he and Kurapika had a mission to follow. There would always be plenty of opportunities to steal along the way.

He glanced over and noticed Kurapika watching the scenery pass by from the car window. It was evident that his lover was more engrossed with the splendor outside, but it was nothing more than a fleeting glimpse as they would not be staying long to partake in any of the spectacles the city had to offer.

It was only a short time later they were arriving at the airport and found themselves standing outside of check-in with luggage in tow.

Chrollo graciously paid the driver, all the while Kurapika watched him with scrutiny. Obviously, because the Kurta thought he was paying the man with stolen money - which he was - but Chrollo merely smiled anyway.

Did his angel forget that he helped in committing thievery before? Like when he blatantly shoved money and other trinkets into both Phinks and Feitan's bags from inside the bank vault back in Dalry?

Sooner or later, Kurapika would get used to the idea and cease worrying about it.

He stepped up beside the younger man though his eyes remained forward. "We should probably get checked in," Chrollo stated and gathered up what belongings he had decided to carry on hand and not within Fun Fun cloth.

Kurapika nodded but refrained from commenting about the exchange made with the cab driver. In reality, it wasn't important. "Agreed. I am sure there isn't much time left before the blimp is scheduled to take off, either."

One thing he was grateful for was the fact that Chrollo had purchased their tickets in advance. Trying to buy them now would have been worse than pulling teeth.

Also, it allowed them to proceed to the loading dock much faster.

Getting checked in took less time than expected, and before he knew it, they were heading towards the designated gate. By the time they arrived, an announcement to board had been made.

"At least we didn't have to wait long," Kurapika commented offhandedly as he followed behind Chrollo through the airbridge.

"Indeed." He responded while trailing behind the other passengers. It only took a few minutes to get inside, but afterward, they entered into a rather spacious cabin.

One that Kurapika instantly took notice of that was private.

To him, it appeared as if there was no end to Chrollo's indulgence. On the other hand, they got to be alone.

"How long will it take for us to reach Balor?" Kurapika set down what little he had taken with him that didn't get sent to be stowed in the bottom of the blimp, and faced Chrollo. "Especially after we land?"

He mirrored Kurapika's actions and did the same. After placing his own things next to his lover's, Chrollo met the younger man's gaze. "Several hours at best." Considering they had to cross the vast sea of Democra, just reaching the Arkuan continent would take some time. Then it would be getting the city itself as the airport was a few kilometers away. "I estimate the trip will take roughly four and a half hours. That includes the trek from the airport to Balor."

Chrollo then turned away from Kurapika and went to sit down in one of the chairs that were in their cabin. After getting comfortable, he reached over to retrieve a book from inside one of his bags and opened it. Kurapika watched him the entire time, a look of curiosity in his expression.

"That long, then?" The blond questioned and strode over to look out the small port window. He could see the runway attendants making preparations for them to take off, and for a moment, Kurapika was interested in the complicated procedure.

Chrollo let his attention draw away from the newly opened book in his lap to face Kurapika again. "Unfortunately." He responded softly. "Might want to make yourself comfortable as it's going to be a while."

As the runway was fully cleared and the airbridge removed, Kurapika could feel the blimp slowly rising into the air. He gave one last glance outside before striding away and over to where his bags were. Kurapika retrieved the old, leather tome and decided to take a seat as well, but instead, close to the window as possible. Admittedly, he liked the view.

Silence had descended between them, and once again, Kurapika found himself immersed within the fantastical world of magic and beasts. Each time he read through the book's pages, whether they were new or ones he read, the material never ceased to amaze him. The stories were no less than intriguing.

At one point, Kurapika ended up going over the parts again about a magical item that was fashioned in the shape of a silver collar and bracelet. It was said to be a ter'angel that was able to control those who could wield the One Power while connecting the bearer and wearer together. Slender fingers danced over the worn pages as the description and likeness reminded him again of a strikingly similar object he saw while at Consta's ball.

There was no rhyme or reason as to why that particular passage captivated his attention, yet Kurapika found himself drawn to it more than anything else within the tome.

He still read about other tales, like those about a powerful item said to summon legends of old - the Heroes of the Horn - who would aid in the fight against the Dark One. Or, about a forbidden art that could permanently erase someone's very existence from the world, rendering them unable from ever returning.

Nothing written in the scriptures was less than fascinating, and Kurapika still found it hard to fathom such a world could have possibly existed long before the one he had come to know. Yet, somehow all of it tied into the society of today. Gradually, he was learning more about the origins of Nen.

Several hours had passed, and eventually, Kurapika felt his eyes become heavy. Gingerly, he closed the cover of the tome and set the book aside. He could feel Chrollo watching him as he arose from the chair before dragging it back from the window to place it beside the one his lover sat in.

Without a word, he sat back down and laid his head on Chrollo's shoulder. Kurapika closed his eyes.

"Getting tired, babe?" Chrollo questioned and instantly wrapped an arm around the younger man's waist. He set his book aside for the second time as he went to place tender kisses along Kurapika's temple.

The contact invoked a sigh to slip past pale lips, and Kurapika merely hummed in response. Chrollo's arm around him brought about a sense of ease and calm.

"I see," Chrollo added at Kurapika's wordless response, and drew his lover as close to him as the chairs they sat in would allow. He knew there was still about an hour or two left in their flight, and any chance Kurapika got to rest was an opportunity Chrollo wasn't about to let pass "You should probably get some sleep, love. It's going to be a while yet before we get to Balor."

Kurapika grunted noncommittally and shifted slightly in his lover's grip as if the aspect of sleep was entirely unnecessary. They still had so much to do, and stopping to even rest was a luxury neither of them could afford. He proceeded to lift himself up, and immediately, Chrollo's arm tightened around him. Kurapika tilted his head up enough to look at Chrollo questioningly. "I am fine."

"No, you're not," Chrollo stated rigorously as his hand clutched to the younger man's side firmly. He wasn't about to let his lover get out of it, no matter what he said. "You've been running practically on fumes for the last week, and pushing yourself harder than usual. Regardless of what you tell me, I know better, and letting you neglect your health isn't something I am about to do."

For the first time, Chrollo had realized he had been more stern with Kurapika than he had in the past. Generally, he would either coax or tease his lover into doing things he wished of him, but this time, Chrollo's demeanor spoke of absolute frustration.

While he understood Kurapika had his reasons, he wasn't about to let his lover destroy himself over it. Kurapika's well-being was something that mattered immensely to him.

Perhaps at one time, the younger man's health mattered not to him, but now Chrollo wished to see that no harm came to him. If Kurapika wasn't going to be proactive about self-preservation, then he would.

Despite Kurapika's look of irritation, Chrollo refused to budge with his demand. He meant what he said.

Which sparked Kurapika's ire all the more, but Chrollo's refusal to let go of him quickly made him relinquish any idea of continuing. He grumbled and laid his head back down. "Alright," Kurapika murmured, then closed his eyes. "Fair point. Wake me up when we land, then."

It was hard to argue the fact that he was tired and had been through so many trials recently that not only was he physically taxed, but mentally as well. Kurapika hated giving Chrollo the satisfaction of winning, but he had to admit that his lover did care.

Coming from someone like Chrollo, it was admirable. Deep down, it made Kurapika love him even more.

A coy smile had made its way across Chrollo's lips when Kurapika relented, and his hand slid from around his lover's side to glide through soft, aurulent locks. "Good." He whispered, pleased that Kurapika decided against putting upfront and actually listened instead. Chrollo placed a few tender kisses to the top of the younger man's head. "I'll be sure to wake you when it's time." He added.

Conceding to his lover's whims was something that Kurapika still found difficulty in accepting as he disliked the aspect, but there was no circumventing it when Chrollo turned out to be right. Continuing on would be pointless.

Kurapika hummed in reply and was met with more gentle kisses peppering the side of his head. Chrollo liked to coddle him, and there were times where it drove him utterly crazy, and then moments like this where he thoroughly enjoyed it, even if he failed to make it known.

Maybe, just maybe he could get used to this.

Neither of them said anything more; the only sound heard was the rumbling of the blimp's propellers along with the whisking of the wind outside.

Kurapika wasn't sure when everything became a faded blur, or when the soothing feeling of warmth managed to encompass him, but the next thing he knew was the slow taper in consciousness before his mind drifted to more pleasant dreams.

The cool night air had offset the intense heat from the day as the sky slowly changed from vibrant red, yellow, and orange to a lulling array of dark purples and blues. Multitudes of stars dotted the sky as night had gradually taken over while crickets chirped their alluring song.

Soft humming accented the melody of the night as blimps landed and rose into the air, while the hustle and bustle of people could be heard in the distance. Even after the sun had gone down, the level of activity continued to remain the same.

A gentle breeze rustled through perfect blond tresses as Kurapika stood on the landing dock, its calm presence, and soothing caress almost sating. Vivid blue eyes scanned his surroundings with keen interest, observation heavy on what was transpiring around him as nothing escaped his notice. While he was new to the area, it was crucial to get adjusted to the local. Ensuring they reached Balor was essential.

Like a lot of their previous trips, it was his first time visiting the particular area, and Kurapika wanted to be sure he knew his way around. Although their stay would be temporary, wandering around in unfamiliar territory without direction could prove detrimental, which Kurapika didn't want to take a chance in happening.

If their last mission taught him anything, it was to be better prepared.

He felt pressure on his shoulder and turned to see Chrollo coming up beside him. "Balor is about thirty minutes to the west. Traveling there on foot would take much longer, so I took the liberty of procuring faster transportation for us."

There was a brief pause between them as Kurapika tilted his head quizzically at Chrollo, the implication in his lover's tone made him suspicious. "You didn't." He accused.

"I did," Chrollo responded. He didn't attempt to stave the grin that accented his visage. Whether or not it would incite the young Kurta's ire was another matter. "And regardless of the method used to obtain it, the fact that we need to reach our destination quicker outweighed any cons."

Chrollo knew how Kurapika felt about his thieving tendencies, but ceasing that type of behavior was all but impossible, and as he told his lover, becoming part of the Genei Ryodan was to accept that aspect. When Kurapika chose to be with him, the younger man knew what to expect.

Disapproval was evident in his lover's expression, but Kurapika didn't appear to be as exasperated as he initially thought. "While I don't agree with your choices, love," he began, though his voice was slightly rigid, "I won't disagree that cutting down travel time is essential. The sooner we get to where we are going, the better, but this doesn't mean I endorse stealing every time we have to do something."

Astonishment was the only thing that came to mind upon hearing the younger man's response, but Chrollo was pleased nonetheless. Kurapika was slowly beginning to accept his way of life as it was proven by his lover's most recent actions. Sooner or later, Kurapika would come to embrace it fully.

The grin on his face broadened as he gestured for Kurapika to follow him. "I wouldn't dream of it." He commented in jest, and his teeth flashed from behind his lips when Kurapika raised an eyebrow but said nothing in response. Instead, the younger man trailed behind him silently.

He led Kurapika through the airport towards baggage claim, where they retrieved their luggage, and then outside towards a vast parking lot. Eventually, they stopped in front of a sleek, dark blue car that was somewhat worn, but was relatively compact, and seemed decent for travel.

Chrollo casually gathered up both suitcases and stowed them in the trunk before going over to the passenger side door and opening it. "After you, babe." He spoke impishly.

For a moment, Kurapika goggled at him as he was utterly astonished that his lover would be so nonchalant about the fact they were about to take a trip using a stolen car. Still, he elected not to chid Chrollo about it as he knew where the discussion would ultimately lead him. Instead, he climbed into the seat without speaking.

Seconds later, there was a resounding click as the door was closed, and then Chrollo slid into the seat beside him.

"I suppose we are all settled then?" Chrollo asked as he gazed briefly over at Kurapika before placing the key into the ignition and starting the car.

When the younger man nodded his approval, Chrollo took as an indication to proceed, and before either of them knew it, they were pulling out of the airport parking lot and on their way.

Kurapika decisively reached for the small bag he had carried with him on the blimp and retrieved the old tome as he decided to read. It was the perfect thing to pass the time while they made the final leg of their trip to Balor.

It was hard to ignore the slight cramp in his leg, but Kurapika was grateful to slide out of the seat so he could finally stand and stretch. Chrollo had already exited the car and began retrieving their luggage from within the trunk. He drew his attention from Chrollo to glance over at the hotel which his lover had chosen for them to stay at, and much to Kurapika's amazement, it didn't look to be excessively lavish.

Once Chrollo was finished setting everything beside the car, he closed the trunk with a snap, and faced Kurapika. "Let's go get checked in." He drawled then proceeded to gather up both suitcases despite his lover's forthcoming protests.

Yet, Kurapika immediately acquiesced after realizing his lover wasn't going to change his mind regardless of what was said and fell into step behind the older man. He disliked feeling as if he were incapable or impotent at doing things for himself - as it seemed Chrollo was always insistent on doing - but he was bone tired and weary from all their excursions, and really couldn't complain.

Although he huffed at the idea, Kurapika followed Chrollo into the hotel without so much as a word.

Checking in didn't take long - which Kurapika was thankful for since he didn't want Chrollo chatting up the female receptionist who was assisting them - and they were riding up the elevator to the floor their room was on.

After entering it, Kurapika wasted no time dumping his bag off into one of the corners beside one of the unadorned chairs and proceeded to remove his shoes. God, he hated how much it seemed that his feet hurt lately.

Chrollo had followed behind him before proceeding to place their luggage off into the same corner. After that, his grey eyes landed on Kurapika. "You should go shower. I'll take one after you're finished. Unless you prefer that I join you?" He stated coquettishly as a bold grin spread across his lips. "After that, we can order dinner."

Immediately, Kurapika turned to face him, and heat rose quickly along his skin. To say he was flustered was an understatement as he was downright galvanized.

"You know there is no need to ask, right?" He added, though in a long, drawn-out purr. Kurapika hadn't entertained the idea of doing anything intimate, but after what occurred in the last few days, having something else to distract him was a welcomed aspect.

He didn't wait for Chrollo, though. If his lover had taken the hint, then he would surely follow. Kurapika proceeded into the small bathroom just off the main room and carefully disrobed. After spending so much out in the elements, it felt good to get away from dirt and grime that had inadvertently become stuck to his clothes. It felt even better to get beneath the warm shower spray that soon caressed his bare skin.

As the water flowed through his hair and down along his body, Kurapika leaned into it, the soothing feeling began to slowly lull away the tension that had built up in his muscles. Even the sound of the water reverberating in the basin was sedating.

Before he could reach for the shampoo bottle that he brought into the shower with him, Kurapika felt arms reach around his waist as warm lips contacted his shoulder. Instinctively, his head fell back so he could gaze at Chrollo, who had silently come up behind him, and a gasp managed to escape his throat when his lover continued placing soft kisses along his shoulder blade.

"So you decided to join after all," Kurapika uttered, and without warning, he spun around within Chrollo's embrace to face him. His eyes instantly found the older man's dark grey ones.

"Indeed, I have," Chrollo responded, voice almost smooth as silk. One of his hands had made its way into Kurapika's wet locks as his fingers stroked tenderly through them. "There is no way I was about to leave you alone after you went out of your way to entice me." He added and dipped down to trail his mouth along the blond's jawline, each breath his lover took was another that motivated him to keep going.

The sensation alone was more than placating, and Kurapika closed his eyes. He felt his chest tighten, and heartbeat speed up as he drew himself closer to Chrollo, his lover's touches beyond inviting. "As if you would have passed up the opportunity even if I hadn't suggested it," Kurapika countered and then fell back against the cold tile wall when Chrollo pressed firmly against him. There was no hesitation either when he raised one of his legs to wrap it snugly around the older man's waist.

Chrollo let his other hand slide down along Kurapika's lithe frame to clutch beneath his thigh to support him, the look in those lustrous blue eyes captivating him all the more. "You're right, I wouldn't have." He confessed before preventing Kurapika from speaking further by taking those supple lips with his own.

Without any hesitation, Chrollo pushed his tongue inside, and Kurapika's unique flavor instantly filled his head.

It was pleasing just how easily his lover capitulated. Before Chrollo knew it, both their appendages were tangling with one another while the Kurta's body began to curl feverishly around his own.

Soon, they became a tangle of limbs beneath the cascading spray while Chrollo ground against where Kurapika burned red-hot as slender fingers twisted within his raven locks and warm breath mingled together. The rhythm of their beating hearts accented the melody of their own gasps and pants as time stood still and nothing else mattered but them.

Eventually, they found themselves lying in bed together after dinner while enjoying each other's company. Kurapika laid with his head on Chrollo's chest as he idly stroked his fingertips along the planes and curves of the younger man's back.

"So, are we going to discuss the details of our next plan tomorrow?" Kurapika asked quietly when he decided to break the silence. Unconsciously, he pulled a little closer to Chrollo as his lover's warmth helped to stave off the cold in the room.

The sudden statement caused Chrollo to briefly still in his movements, but only for a fraction of a second, and he resumed stroking along Kurapika's skin. "Yes. That is after we get ample rest." Chrollo insisted before trailing his hand up along the blond's cheek before gently pushing back a few strays of golden hair from his face. "For now, it's best we get some sleep." He added in a coaxing tone before letting his eyes close.

Kurapika breathed in but didn't rebuff what Chrollo said and took the suggestion as an example of the older man caring about his health.

Deciding not to say anything further, he simply resigned to the serenity of the moment as the tempo of their breathing, and unified hearts drew him towards a much needed and peaceful slumber.

After Thoughts: While this chapter did take a bit longer to write, at least, I was able to focus on Kurapika's struggles - especially after what happened in Debron's mansion - and how it's affecting his relationship with Chrollo. I think it gave me a bit of leeway to focus on character and relationship development, while slowly Kurapika into the direction that would be best suited for the trials ahead. A lot was going on here, yet, it was nice to take the time to work on multiple points at once while revisiting some older conflicts that are finally on their way to getting resolved.

Like I have said in the past, it will only continue to heat up from here as our boys face other challenges while figuring out their differences and how to overcome them.
