A/N: Hello, dear readers. Please excuse the extensive delay in getting this released - writing this chapter had, unfortunately, proved to be difficult. I am still dealing with a partial writer's block, along with other issues I've had to deal with in life that ended up taking time away from writing. Hopefully, this chapter came out as good as previous ones. :O I still enjoyed writing it although it was difficult getting the composition to the point I was satisfied with. Nevertheless, our boys' journey continues. ;)
And let's not forget a huge thank you to Sweet(s)Dreamer for taking time to beta each chapter.
Summary: As Kurapika continues to deal with the after-effects of what transpired in Odaria, both he and Chrollo locate their next target, and make their move. Yet, the encounter is nothing like either of them had expected.
"Are you sure that will be a wise course of action? From the way I see it, handling this delicately would significantly reduce the chances of anything going wrong as opposed to just rushing in there like last time."
Kurapika stood across the table filled with maps, documents, and other papers containing information on their next target. So far, they had learned the person was a young woman named Trina Ashland who apparently had a penchant for collecting rare body parts - preserved or otherwise - and lived in a large house at the west end of the city.
The area was rural, and not many people lived there although it was decently upscale, and showed no signs of being impoverished, yet the place was noticeably quiet.
Little was known about Trina other than she was the daughter of a successful businessman who ran a well-known designer chain and was set as the heir to the company. She was also married with no kids.
Currently, Trina worked as the product advisor for the company while her father was still in charge. Any deals she had in flesh trade was something she did in her spare time.
It was hard not to see the similarities between this woman, and Light Nostrad's daughter, Neon. Both were young, came from well-known families - honest or otherwise - had footholds in the stock market, and collected body parts as hobbies.
The practice was considered morbid, even taboo, but many people crossed the threshold of immortality to sate their own greed and desires.
What he saw here was no different.
"I won't disagree that you do present a rather good point," Chrollo began, his attention focused on the mug in his hand as he took a draw from its contents, "but I feel it would be best to eliminate our targets before snatching the eyes."
Immediately the color drained from Kurapika's skin as the notion of murdering those who possessed the Scarlet Eyes had nearly taken the wind from his lungs.
Not everyone they crossed had malicious intent - Debron and the Mafia were an exception - but the idea of eliminating them was something that Kurapika couldn't bring himself to accept.
There were other, less violent ways to acquire the eyes.
"How can you say that?" Kurapika said, his voice heavy with disapproval. "Most of the people we've crossed with pairs of Scarlet Eyes weren't hostile. Slaughtering innocents because you're trying to stop any possible chance of retaliation isn't something I can get behind."
His voice trailed off while he took a few moments to regain his temporarily lost composure. Kurapika looked at Chrollo directly in the eye as he made sure to fully hone his point. It still baffled him that his lover actually suggested such a thing; the very idea twisted Kurapika's insides.
Chrollo took another drink from his coffee before setting the cup aside. He didn't blame Kurapika for being upset by his proposal, but safety was the most significant thing on his mind. "I understand how you feel," he commented while keeping his tone calm and even, "but also why you would be reluctant to accept the notion." Chrollo paused as he carefully studied Kurapika's facial expression while taking care not to set his lover off. "However, we can't simply take the chance that whoever we cross from here on out won't attempt to strike back. After what happened last time, we can't be too careful." He added, hoping that Kurapika understood his reasoning.
The memory of seeing his lover strapped down to a metal table and mere inches from getting dissected sat heavily on his mind. Each time Chrollo envisioned it was another harsh reminder of how untrustworthy the world was.
There were far too times that he got dealt a bad hand by a society who saw him as nothing other than a useless nobody or a waste of space. It was because of that knowledge it made him cautious but also pessimistic.
He could see skepticism along with hesitation flash behind Kurapika's bright cerulean eyes. It seemed that perhaps his lover hadn't been pushed enough to consider the notion - as he expected - but Chrollo knew if he was going to coax Kurapika into accepting the more unsavory part of life, he had to see the necessity of it.
Pushing the younger man into it was something he didn't plan on doing, but in time, Kurapika would have to see the value of preservation when it came to his life over an enemy's.
Losing Kurapika was an aspect Chrollo vowed he would never let happen.
Again, it seemed the Kurta was still hesitant, and he strode around the table to close the gap between them before dipping down slightly to take Kurapika's lips with his own.
Surprise wormed its way over his features at the unexpected act, but Kurapika sighed contentedly and accepted the kiss, although he was cut off from responding. While it only lasted a few moments, the sensation it left behind was mollifying. "How strategic of you," Kurapika muttered as he slowly caught his breath, "but I still cannot understand why you feel the need to resort to such extremes before all others options have been exhausted." He studied Chrollo while contemplating what his lover had said.
To a fault, he got why the older man felt the way he did. The expression that was on Chrollo's face when his lover saw him strapped to that table with a needle pressed to his neck had stuck intently in his mind.
Still, resorting to mindless slaughter of anyone who resisted them or got in the way? Kurapika couldn't believe such a thing was even getting suggested. Thinking about it brought a bitter taste to his mouth. Unless he was in danger or getting threatened, killing was inexcusable.
Chrollo had to understand that all the bloodshed needed to stop. He didn't want another repeat of Yorknew. Too many lives were lost due to an act of revenge.
Revenge. The word echoed again in Kurapika's mind.
It was the same for him. Kurapika realized this. Yet, he no longer sought recompense. Death solved nothing and was a fool's ambition. To save one's own skin, however? Killing for that reason was something Kurapika had come to terms with and accepted. Outside of that?
He just couldn't.
"I know you're honorable," Chrollo said, "and I cannot fault you for wanting to stray from such unethical methods." He could see the unease in the young Kurta's expression, which made him reach over to gently brush away the hair from his lover's visage. "I just fear for your safety, angel. Not only are you a part of the most wanted criminals in the world, but you're also considered a relic."
The possibility of something happening to Kurapika - minor or otherwise - worried him, especially after what happened with Debron Cloch. Yet, that wasn't his only reason.
Along the way, both of them had incurred so many enemies, created waves in several cities, and now there was the potential of running into other people who may have extensive knowledge of the Kurtas. That put Kurapika at risk.
To the world, the Kurta clan was gone. News of what he and his spiders had done reached all corners of the globe, so no survivors were thought to exist.
Debron, however, changed all that.
Should Kurapika's true identity ever get revealed, it wouldn't bode well for them. There was no telling how anyone would react to learning that a survivor of the Kurta actually existed.
It was an aspect that Chrollo wanted to avoid at all costs.
"I am aware of that," Kurapika responded, his attention solely on Chrollo, "and I know the risks involved with our search for the Scarlet Eyes along with my membership into the Genei Ryodan." He paused, then reached over to take hold of his own mug. The coffee tasted good and helped soothe his nerves. "But it isn't enough for me to condone outright murder. Not everyone is like that batshit crazy scientist."
Kurapika closed his eyes when Chrollo's fingers swept across his cheek after pushing his hair aside. While he was still perturbed by his lover's suggestion, there was a placifying sensation in those touches.
He sighed and leaned into it.
Which brought a grin to Chrollo's lips. Although Kurapika remained steadfast and reluctant, he understood the younger man's stance. "You don't have to say anything more, babe." He whispered and let his fingers trail down over Kurapika's cheek, then along his neck, before pulling it away. "I understand your reasoning, and I won't force you. While I feel differently, I respect your decision." Chrollo could see conflict etched on Kurapika's features, which made him even more compassionate and respectful to his lover's choices.
A shiver raced down his spine as Chrollo's hand caressed his skin, and Kurapika groaned softly as a result. "Does that mean you won't do anything I am not approving of?" He questioned and took another sip from his coffee. Kurapika watched him curiously from over the rim.
The accusation gave Chrollo pause. "Have I ever gone against your wishes, love?" He then reached over to stroke his fingers tenderly over Kurapika's clavicle in an attempt to reassure him.
Chrollo's touch made him tremble again. "No, you haven't." He breathed and set the cup aside once more.
"Then you have nothing to fear."
"You really know how to be convincing."
It was Chrollo's turn to stare. He didn't expect Kurapika to be so intent, but at least he appeared to be content. The outcome was further evidence of the bond deepening between them.
Even if Kurapika was unwilling to use more unorthodox methods to minimize risk, then he would be sure to scrutinize all they met no matter how innocent they seemed.
He trusted no one outside of his spiders, or Kurapika and his friends.
"That I am." The grin on his lips expanded, and Chrollo finished off the remainder of his coffee. "But honest about it nonetheless."
Kurapika shook his head, a faint smile accenting his pale lips. Chrollo definitely was something else. "While still acting like a complete ass in the process." He couldn't help but chuckle at his statement.
"You always know me so well," Chrollo mused, then kissed the younger man's forehead. He loved how ornery Kurapika tended to get.
They fell quiet after that, and Kurapika utilized the brief interlude in their conversation to finish off his coffee. He glanced over at the documents which lay sprawled on the table and became inquisitive once again.
"That aside," he began, and picked up a paper containing an image of the person they were tracking, "I assume we have an idea of where our next target is?" Kurapika asked while scanning over the information present.
They knew the person's identity, but her exact whereabouts he wasn't sure on aside from the fact she lived in the west end of Balor. He assumed Chrollo knew more.
"Actually, I do." Kurapika turned to face his lover, and Chrollo set his mug aside. "Shalnark managed to pinpoint Trina Ashland's location. He gave me the address to her residence. I believe it's there we will find the eyes."
Hearing the statement incited Kurapika's immediate attention. The blond practically gaped at him. "That is good news." He said, almost sounding eager. "Now we have an idea of where to go. Though judging from what we already know, this woman doesn't seem dangerous like our previous targets." He added thoughtfully.
While Kurapika was trying to be optimistic, he suspected that Chrollo didn't feel the same. For him, it was hard imagining a young woman being anywhere near dangerous as either the Mafia or the insane scientist. It was just an aspect he really never came across.
Then he remembered that the Genei Ryodan has female members.
Maybe he was just acting overly confident.
"Never underestimate someone," Kurapika heard Chrollo say, and his eyes found his lover's, "or let your guard down." The older man added, thoroughly reminding the blond about the truth of reality. One could never be too careful. "I would rather keep history from repeating itself."
The epiphany hit Kurapika, and hard. To say he wasn't privy to the dangers of the world was an understatement.
Quite to the contrary, he had been made aware of how cruel people could be from the time he was forced to live on his own after losing his family.
It was just hard envisioning that even the most gentle person could be potentially violent.
"Don't worry, I am fully aware of that fact." Kurapika set the paper back down before mulling over the possible ways of handling their current objective. At present, he didn't see Trina as a threat, but since she was a flesh collector, he didn't view her as ordinary either. "I don't plan to trust this woman either. What I won't do is outright kill her just to ensure that she cannot retaliate. Unless she threatens us or presents herself as dangerous, I would prefer to handle this diplomatically."
Kurapika's adamancy further told Chrollo of his lover's stance, which definitely was opposite of how he wanted to handle the situation, but there was no contesting it.
Instead, the raven-head decided to let Kurapika have the reins, and work out the details of their mission. "Then I will let you designate how to proceed with this. If you have a better idea of how to go about obtaining the eyes, by all means, let me hear it."
Most of their objectives had been formulated by him, but this time, Chrollo wanted to see how Kurapika would handle it. Perhaps the time had come to see what else his lover was capable of.
To hear Chrollo be so willing to let him take over thoroughly shocked Kurapika as he expected the older man to be more resistive, but he was glad nonetheless.
"Great, I was hoping you would say that," Kurapika began and crossed his arms, "as I do have an idea." He fell silent a moment while his thoughts veered back towards Neon Nostrade and how the girl had expensive tastes.
"Oh?" Chrollo added, genuinely interested. "What do you have in mind?"
Kurapika smiled impishly. "Money. Bargaining for the eyes. It was originally how we planned to get the pair Corthoes had, yet, the difference here is, we are dealing with a rich, young woman. Chances are if she's anything like Light Nostrade's daughter, then she enjoys spending money and lots of it. Since that is no object for us, I am fairly confident we may just be able to convince Trina to sell the eyes to us."
He fell silent afterward and let the weight of what he said to sink in. Of course, the last time they attempted to negotiate for a pair of Scarlet Eyes, it had ultimately failed and ended with him and Chrollo fighting for them.
This time, however, Kurapika held confidence it would be much different.
Chrollo took a minute to think it over, as the plan sounded pretty solid, but there was still a thread of hesitation. Simply ignoring what happened in the past was difficult, and he was sure that if either of them grew too lax, then something was bound to go wrong. Despite that, Chrollo was willing to run with it, figuring that he would give the tactic a second try.
And if it ended up failing again? Then, he would handle things his way.
"Alright," Chrollo affirmed and took one last look at the papers on the table. "We can set up a meeting to try and negotiate with this woman, which hopefully, will end in success this time around."
What a relief it was to hear his lover agree. Kurapika half expected him to continue putting up a front, but he was pleased with the notion of using a more diplomatic approach as opposed to a hostile one.
Besides, he wanted to avoid any unnecessary conflict if possible.
After Kurapika thoroughly reviewed the information they had on their target - including her residential address - he faced Chrollo. "Great." He said and tucked a few stray locks of hair behind his ear that his lover missed earlier. "Then would you mind initiating contact with Trina to set up a meeting with a potential sale? If my suspicions are correct, she may be easily persuaded for the right price." Kurapika added and hoped this time it would pan out.
If everything went according to plan, this would be at least one mission completed without a negative outcome.
"That can be arranged," Chrollo responded, and let a grin form over his face again. "I'll see to it right away." He was impressed with how persuasive and cunning Kurapika was. Not that he would openly admit it, but his lover really was assertive, and Chrollo admired that about him.
He nodded and turned away from his lover. "Sounds good then," Kurapika vocalized before wandering back to where the coffee maker was to pour himself another cup. "Ideally, we can come to an agreement without any sort of hitch." He continued while adding cream and a mild sweetener to it. "And it would be one less person to make an enemy out of."
Kurapika was aware that he seemed highly confident and audacious by attempting to rely solely on chance, but it was all they had. If there was any way to avoid conflict, even once, then it would make their situation better.
Doing that for every mission after that may be virtually impossible, yet, Kurapika wasn't about to give up trying.
The whole time Chrollo watched his lover intently, contemplation heavy on his mind as he processed what was said. Kurapika was indeed a visionary and sought to retain a positive outlook on things, which at times made it hard to deny.
He stroked his chin in thought before responding. "If we're lucky," Chrollo stated and decided to get himself another cup of coffee as well. He wasn't surprised by how much of the stuff they had been drinking. With everything he and Kurapika have been through lately, they needed it. "And pertaining that negotiations don't break down this time around." Because of the failed attempt with Corthoes, it was hard to not be skeptical, but Chrollo wanted to give the benefit of the doubt. "However, if we are unsuccessful-"
"Then, we will go with your initial plan." Kurapika finished, and Chrollo was nearly taken aback.
Well, that was unexpected.
All Chrollo could do was stare at Kurapika.
"Are you serious?" He looked straight into the young blond's eyes, though could tell there was an air of calm around him. "You're really okay with killing this woman if the situation doesn't go according to plan?"
It was hard to believe what happened, and for a moment, Chrollo wondered if he had suddenly fallen into another dimension, or if the person he was speaking to really was Kurapika.
To think that his lover had taken the least favored option as a last resort was something Chrollo never really anticipated.
Maybe Kurapika was coming around after all.
"I would rather not, as I prefer to avoid that option. But," there was stillness within the room after Kurapika had paused, which caused tension to fill the air, "if push comes to shove, and we cannot secure the eyes peacefully, then I won't stop you from taking drastic action."
The expression on Kurapika's face was one of utter seriousness, and Chrollo had to take it all in. Thinking about it was strange in itself, but hearing it was beyond belief.
Considering what happened with Corthoes, and just by Kurapika's doctrine alone, he never predicted a response like that from his lover.
"I didn't think I would hear you would say that," Chrollo admitted before taking a drink from his mug, "considering how steadfast you are with your morals." He then peered into the contents inside of it, and his mind became lost in the moment.
Getting Kurapika to change was an aspect Chrollo wanted to see but on his lover's terms. If the direction Kurapika was now choosing to take was of his own accord, then all the better.
Whether or not it was due to his influence, however, was another matter, but he wasn't about to force Kurapika either.
"Well, don't get used to it," Kurapika replied smugly, and tilted his head a little, "I did say that I would agree to it, but under certain circumstances." He continued, but a little more firmly to ensure the point was taken.
In the back of his mind, Kurapika hoped his decision wouldn't be one that he would later regret as the notion sounded utterly ridiculous. But like Chrollo, he didn't want history to repeat itself. As much as Kurapika didn't like the idea, if worse came to worst, he would do whatever was necessary to ensure success.
"Just like you had to back in Cysteria."
It was a startling revelation, one that made Kurapika rattled with sheer awareness. He never expected to reach such an extreme conclusion, or that he would be so willing to embrace it, yet, turning back was not an option.
He realized that now. The road he traveled was long and arduous. Nothing was ever easy, and there would be hard choices to make along the way. Kurapika knew what was entailed when he made his vow and began his journey.
Such was no different when he chose to be with Chrollo, or when he decided to join the Genei Ryodan. Life changed as nothing stayed the same.
"Regardless of the path you take, or the oaths you make, we will always support you. Keep on living, doing as you must, and know that you are never alone."
With the insight came understanding. The very idea solidified Kurapika's own beliefs and views. Moving forward meant committing to change, and one that could be radical, or even drastic. It was an attribute that he needed to accept.
Even if that meant he had to do so at his own pace.
Chrollo tried to distract himself by taking another draw from his coffee but kept his eyes trained on Kurapika as he did so. "Oh, I am well aware." He responded, though slightly amused. "I don't plan on thinking of it as anything other than temporary unless you say otherwise." As hard it was to digest something so surprising and abrupt, Chrollo was still pleased by his lover's continued adaptability. Knowing that made him more confident in Kurapika's decisions.
Just looking into those alluring, convincing cerulean eyes told him that. All Chrollo saw was determination and control. If Kurapika held any reservations, he didn't outwardly show it.
Perhaps in truth, the young Kurta had slowly begun to let go of his old ways.
"Good to know," Kurapika finally said, and Chrollo couldn't help but grin more. "If you thought otherwise, then I may have found a reason to kick your ass." A laugh followed his comment, and Kurapika cast a smile of his own.
"You continue to wound me, babe," Chrollo mock protested, and he finished off the rest of his second cup of coffee before setting it aside. "I wouldn't ever do anything to make you go that far." He then drew closer to the younger man and dipped down to gently capture those plush lips again.
They were so soft and so sweet. Chrollo was able to taste the flavor of the coffee his lover had drank upon them, which added to the delightful sensation. Though, when Kurapika eagerly kissed back, that made it even better.
All thought processes instantly evaporated from his mind, and Kurapika let himself get caught up in the moment. Chrollo's lips worked slowly but purposely against his, and before he knew it, their tongues were tangled with one another while they were wrapped up in each other's arms.
Eventually, they broke apart to breathe, and Kurapika stepped back while panting. He fixed his gaze on Chrollo's. Those grey pools were so transfixing. "Always so decisive," Kurapika murmured as his effeminate appearing fingers trailed down along the older man's jawline.
The skin was smooth despite Chrollo's rugged features. Even the slight dips in his lover's cheeks and chin made him look undeniably gorgeous.
"I am," Chrollo retorted, and he felt a slight shiver go up along his spine as Kurapika touched him. "You need to be kept on your toes, love."
Kurapika's expression turned inquisitive at his comment, and Chrollo couldn't help but grin. Every time Kurapika got exasperated, or flustered, it was nothing short of adorable. Chrollo couldn't seem to get enough of it. The younger man really was precious.
Instead of responding verbally, Kurapika punched his lover playfully in the chest before backing away to pick up his forgotten mug. He carefully observed Chrollo as he took a sip. "Anyway," he hummed as the warmth of the coffee soothed away his stress, "we should probably get moving. I hope to get this mission underway soon and without too much delay." He added before lowering the mug.
Again, Kurapika thought over the details of their plan while considering any factors that may cause potential issues and solutions for them. If all went as he hoped, then it would go without so much as a hitch. He really wanted to avoid any unnecessary extremes, if possible.
With luck, Trina Ashland was a reasonable person, and wouldn't put up a fight over their proposal. Then, he could just simply walk away with the Scarlet Eyes.
Unconsciously, his attention drifted back towards Chrollo when he realized his mind had become wayward, but by then, his lover had already begun making arrangements. The older man didn't waste time, which Kurapika was pleased about.
"Getting everything set up shouldn't take long," Chrollo stated, and Kurapika nodded in response. The sooner, the better he figured. "I should have a meeting arranged for later this afternoon. Maybe sooner if I can manage it."
Kurapika turned from the older man to begin preparing as well. Dragging his heels was the last thing he wanted. "Alright, then. Let me know once everything is established."
He finished off what was left of his drink, then proceeded to get ready. Not only was image an essential nuance for making first impressions, so was readiness. Securing a deal would take not only showing an instance of wealth, but also intelligence.
A slow-witted person definitely would lose without realization and end up walking away empty-handed. Kurapika didn't intend for that to happen. He and Chrollo did have the necessary skills to provide the look of sophistication, Kurapika only hoped they both were on the same page.
Needless to say, just like in every other situation before, he wouldn't leave without the eyes.
Sighing resolutely, Kurapika left Chrollo to handle his part, and gave the papers with the information on their target one last glance over, then went off to groom himself.
The entire time, every aspect of their upcoming situation weighed heavily on his mind as Kurapika continued with planning. He wanted to be sure that negotiations would go over smoothly. The last thing he needed - either of them needed for that matter - was to add more to the growing list of infractions they had accrued.
It was bad enough that life for them had become challenging as is, especially since he and Chrollo began searching for the eyes together. But to make it even more grueling? Kurapika wished to avoid that in any way he could.
Still, if it came down to it, there wasn't anything he wouldn't do to achieve his goals. Even if that meant descending right into hell.
He had already sinned.
The house was rather huge - and one that safely could have been considered a small manor - with its many rooms and massive front yard, making the place appear larger than it probably was. It sat at the end of a gilded street lined with intricate fences, meticulous lawns, and other elaborate houses, which was a clear indication of where the rich people in Balor resided.
Chrollo came up beside Kurapika as he straightened his tie. The dark strip of fabric had gotten slightly askew during their trip, and he quickly fixed it before moving forward. Kurapika spared a brief glance towards his lover as he tugged firmly on the rim of his blazer to ensure it was straight, then nodded to indicate he was also ready.
Faint traces of a smile appeared on Chrollo's lips, and both of them approached the massive iron-wrought gate before reaching over to press the button on the call box that sat just beside it.
After a few moments of silence had passed, Kurapika began to wonder if anyone was actually at the residence when a firm female voice suddenly came through the speaker and made him pause.
It was now or never.
"Ah yes," Chrollo said, and Kurapika gave him a sidelong look, but then said nothing as it was better for him to provide the introductions. "I am Quwrof Lyssiref. My associate and I are here to meet with Miss Trina Ashford to discuss a deal with her." He added, then waited. There was another pause before the voice echoed through the intercom again.
"Oh, you're the one My Lady has been expecting. Alright then," she said, and a loud beep preceded her words, "you may enter. Follow the pathway to the main entryway where you will be greeted."
"Thank you," Chrollo responded, and the sly expression on his face only deepened. Once the voice disappeared, and the gates began to open, his attention turned towards his lover. "See? That was relatively easy."
Kurapika huffed at the comment, and his lips curled into a frown. "You don't have to be so smug about it." He commented flatly, arms crossed. Chrollo's egotism drove him nuts at times, he had to admit.
"Hard not to be when you know how to garner results." He affirmed and then chuckled at the younger man's exasperated reaction. Kurapika really was melodramatic at times, but it never ceased in making him look adorable when it happened.
Rather than continue their debacle, Kurapika refrained from making a retort and rolled his eyes instead. He knew that Chrollo tended to get a kick out of making him feel flustered and off-kilter, so to keep his lover from getting any more satisfaction, staying quiet was the best option.
He heard Chrollo snicker as they passed through the open gate, but Kurapika ignored it, and soon, they were approaching the front entrance that sat before a massive driveway with a pearly white fountain, and luscious garden.
Standing outside were two people. One was a woman with dark hair that was tied back into a bun with two long sections trailing down and wearing an ebony dress with an apron, while the other was a tall, middle-aged gentleman with partially grey hair and wearing formal dress clothes.
Probably the servants, Kurapika surmised as he and Chrollo approached them.
"Greetings. I am Dalton Marksworth, head butler, and this is Mileena Skye, the head maid." The man intoned briskly while bowing towards them. "We are here to welcome you to the Ashford estate. Our Mistress has been awaiting your arrival."
Kurapika exchanged glances with Chrollo, but right before he could say anything, the older man chimed in. "The pleasure is all ours." He spoke formally and gave a return bow. "We appreciate the kind reception."
Dalton nodded, then gestured with his hand towards the entryway. "If you will, please follow me." The man added, then turned almost mechanically and entered with the woman Milenna on his heels.
The inside was grand, almost like something straight out of a fantasy novel by the multitudes of marble statues, intricate vases lined with exotic plants in them, and beautiful paintings on the walls.
Ornamental furniture was scattered about - chairs and tables of high-quality wood - that clearly depicted extravagant taste, and spoke of someone who lived quite profusely. There were even a few pedestals that housed fine, carved bust statues in the form of famous historians. Seeing that astonished Kurapika.
Eventually, they were led to an area that contained a small sitting room. Dalton stopped just outside the large, inlaid doors before speaking. "Inside is where Miss Ashford is." He chimed, then placed a hand on the golden handle and pushed them open, revealing a grand setup. Plush furniture, gilded lamps, and a fancy oak coffee table all sat before a grand fireplace.
There, sitting on one of the chairs was a woman lavished in a short black dress and drinking from what appeared to be an oriental teacup. Instantly, she set it down and rose.
"Mistress Ashford," Dalton announced formally, "Master Lyssiref is here to see you."
"Ah, show him in." She responded, and he bowed before stepping aside to fully reveal their guests. "Thank you," Trina added, and Dalton bowed again before walking away.
Once the butler left, Chrollo then walked a few centimeters forward and bowed himself. Kurapika noticed this and did the same.
"Welcome, Mr. Lyssiref," Trina commented, her voice sounding like chimes. "It is a pleasure to meet you." She furthered after reaching over to shake Chrollo's hand.
"Likewise." He responded smoothly and clasped the woman's thin hand firmly.
Trina smiled and pulled her hand away. Then her attention fell on Kurapika. Her eyes seemed to linger on him. "And who might this stunning young man be?" She questioned curiously.
Mention of Kurapika brought a brief moment of surprise to Chrollo, but it quickly retroceded, and he glanced at his lover before turning back towards the woman in front of him. "Oh, please forgive my rudeness, Miss Ashford, but this is my associate, Curarpikt Erigeron." He divulged officially before nodding discretely towards the younger man.
It was hard to discount the way Trina seemed to study him - almost like surveying a prized horse at a show - and he reached forward to shake the woman's hand. "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Kurapika finally said though he could hear the slight waver in his own voice.
The way those painted lips curved just barely upward, or how her hazel eyes continued to focus on him, the only thing Kurapika found distracting from how strangely mesmerizing Trina appeared to be was the multitudes of silver jewelry adorning her frame. From the elegant earrings which dangled heavily from her lobes or the elaborate necklace she wore, the way it sparkled beneath the gentle rays in the room was enough to keep him from becoming entirely benumbed.
Something about her was beyond idiosyncratic, which heightened Kurapika's awareness, yet, he couldn't quite put his finger on precisely what it was. Even her posture screamed of sheer warning, almost like that of a predator on a blood hunt. He also picked up the faint trace of perfume, but was unable to decipher the scent, yet, it had a strange, lulling sensation to it as if he was becoming vorticose or besotted.
Though seconds later, he felt a weight against his back that drew his attention immediately. "Are you alright?" He heard Chrollo say, and whatever it was that he experienced was instantly gone.
"Yes," Kurapika responded, though slightly shaken. "Please excuse me. I don't know what happened. Something came over me, but I am fine now." Again, his eyes landed on Trina, but despite what happened before, nothing about her seemed out of the ordinary.
Yet, he couldn't ignore what he had felt.
Trina's smile extended across her lips as if she was genuinely unconcerned. "No apology is needed. If you're fine with proceeding on, then I see no reason to object." She commented softly, and tilted her head, the length of her brown curls dropping in a flourish over her shoulder.
Kurapika's gaze shifted between her and Chrollo before settling back on the woman once more. He then gave an approving nod.
"Are you sure?" Chrollo inquired, but he had no plans of stopping. Not now. Regardless of the strange occurrence and the odd sensation he got about the woman and their situation, he still wasn't leaving without the eyes.
"Trust me. I will be fine. We came all this way, and I would rather not have wasted our time, or Miss Ashford's for that matter."
Chrollo's expression softened. "If you're confident, then I see no further need to continue questioning it." He added and turned back towards the woman across from them. "We can continue."
Again, Trina smiled. Her outward appearance conveying the face of understanding, which on the surface was sincere, but although the young woman didn't come off entirely as deceptive, Chrollo became suspicious. There was an oddity to Trina's behavior. Her demeanor was overly sugary and sweet, and a little too accommodating. It was something he didn't notice at first, but after what happened to Kurapika, he wasn't so sure.
Still, it was too early to act or do anything aside from observing. On the off chance that he was wrong, then nothing would happen, and they would walk away with the Scarlet Eyes at the end of their meeting.
Pertaining that Trina Ashford had the intent to sell, and wasn't housing ulterior motives.
"Fantastic." She chimed and gestured towards the chairs behind her. "Please, sit and make yourselves at home then." Taking her place back in the chair she had initially sat in before her guests arrived, Trina watched as the two men sat down on the loveseat across from her. She then reached for her cup once again. "Can I offer either of you gentlemen any tea?" Her attention remained on both men as she observed them from over the rim of it.
Chrollo couldn't help but smile - albeit charmingly - at the woman's presumed hospitality, and despite he was still uncertain if it was sincere or not, tea wasn't his thing. Aside from partaking in the tasting of unique or expensive wine, coffee was his weakness. Of course, he would drink fluids other than coffee and wine from time to time, as tea was one of those, but at the moment, he wasn't in the mood for it. "No. I'll pass, but thank you." He commented politely.
It was peculiar to hear as Kurapika could have sworn at one time while they were visiting a restaurant during their travels that Chrollo had tea while they were having a meal.
He was aware that his lover generally preferred coffee as he did, but considering their host, and how considerate she was, Kurapika was astonished that Chrollo had rejected the offer.
Regardless of the earlier instance, having something to drink sounded pleasant to him. "I'll take some, please."
Not surprising. Chrollo thought as he had partially expected Kurapika to appease the woman and accept her offer. However, if Trina had any malicious intent, and tampered with the tea, he was prepared to enact the second anything happened. He still hoped that his suspicions were incorrect, but like Kurapika, something felt off.
The fact his lover had concluded the same thing was apparent in the younger man's posture and demeanor. Yet, displaying that knowledge could prove to have consequences if they weren't careful.
It meant that both of them had to continue on as if nothing was wrong, and just let the events unfold, then so be it.
Trina nodded towards them both. "Alright, then I will have a tray brought out for only one then." She commented politely before gesturing to the one maid who remained close by, and the young woman disappeared from the room a minute later. "While we wait for that, shall we go on with our meeting then?" She asked.
Chrollo leaned in slightly towards his lover and whispered to the younger man. "Remember to let me do the talking."
While Kurapika was still reluctant to refrain from adding his own points to the upcoming conversation, he did remember how a few of their situations played out in the past from him getting involved, and the outcomes because of it. Knowing that was a thorough reminder of why Chrollo tended to take control when they were involved with negotiations.
He simply hummed in response, though the tightness of his lips remained the same.
"Yes, I think it would be best if we got the meeting underway," Chrollo confirmed, then folded his hands on his lap. He was vaguely aware of the maid returning to their side moments later, or of the silver tray being placed down on the table before them. It wasn't until the serving woman was handing Kurapika a porcelain cup filled with hot liquid did he realize her presence.
At least his lover remained silent, aside from thanking the woman while he dressed his tea. Chrollo was grateful that Kurapika refrained from kicking up a fuss, and settled for just listening.
"Well then," Trina began, and set her cup down again, "from my understanding, you're both here because of Scarlet Eyes I possess?" She furthered, her attention honed intently on them. "And that you're seeking to possibly buy them?"
She sat entirely straight after finishing her inquiry. While requests to purchase her unique valuables and collectibles were generally rare, receiving one for her Scarlet Eyes was rather unusual.
Although her title and primary focus was on obtaining flesh items, it didn't stop her from dabbling in other areas of collecting.
However, it was the aspect of parting with those hard to get items that gave her pause as she tended to keep a hold on anything considered highly valuable.
Unless it was for the right price.
Even then, the Scarlet Eyes were one of those special objects that got practically labeled as priceless. Because the Kurta clan was renowned for their ability to change their eyes to a beautiful, incandescent scarlet, they were dubbed as one of the seven wonders.
After their massacre, thirty-two pairs entered the black market where they became highly sought after, which made them become a historical item. Many people have either owned or bartered for a pair of those unique eyes, so it didn't shock her to see other people questing for one.
It was the notion of someone banking on hers that made Trina more than curious. She didn't think many people knew of her acquisitions.
Still, she was interested to see where this little parley was going to take them.
Tension filled the room, which Chrollo had easily noticed. Not only was he able to interpret it, but see it as well. He quickly picked up on Kurapika's astriction as his lover was poor in concealing his emotions well - just like his ability to lie - but Trina, on the other hand? Chrollo only sensed calm from her, but it was a strange, eerie calm that didn't seem quite right.
There was a chance she was a Nen user and was potentially concealing that aspect, but he wasn't entirely certain.
If anything, he would root out the truth during their discussion. He just prayed that Kurapika didn't try to interfere and disrupt his carefully laid plan.
Before speaking, Chrollo cleared his throat. "Yes, that is correct." He began as his grey eyes stayed locked with her own. "My associate and I have been attempting to track down a pair for a business deal we are planning to make. We run Quintec Oil, and recently, we were discussing a possible buyout of Kessel, another minor oil company, but one of the aspects brought to the table as part of the deal was a pair of Scarlet Eyes. Funny how that was presented as more important than straight-up Jenny, but who am I to question the man? So, when my partner and I were finally able to track down someone who owned a pair, we decided to inquire." Chrollo paused as he steepled his fingers while watching the woman across from him carefully. "That is where you come in, Miss Ashford. Considering you're the daughter of a known businessman like myself, we figured to approach you first."
Leaning back against the loveseat, he continued to study her features, from the barely visible tug of her mouth to the way her eyes shone with curiosity and intrigue. Reading her was partly difficult with how hard her expression remained, especially after making his statement, but she was also emitting subconscious responses that were easy to interpret.
Which also helped with figuring out which methods would be needed to try and convince her to sell. Given a chance, he would have preferred to keep it straightforward and just filch the eyes, but he had promised Kurapika that they would attempt to negotiate first.
He sighed. Although it was infuriating, Chrollo wasn't about to back out now. If fortune was on their side, then everything would go through without issue. Chrollo knew his lover wanted to avoid any complications, pertaining that Trina Ashland was cooperative, yet, he still couldn't shake the notion that something about her was abnormal.
For a second, he broke eye contact with the woman to spare a glance towards Kurapika, and while the younger man looked at him inquisitively, he remained silent otherwise.
The sound of humming drew his attention back towards her, and Chrollo waited patiently for the woman's response.
"I see," Trina responded and reached over to pick up her teacup. Gingerly, she brought the rim of it to her lips before taking a sip. There was an interlude in their conversation as she did so, but her attention never wavered. "Honestly, I wasn't aware that Quintec was proposing any sort of deal, or that Kessel was looking to sell, but I do find it rather odd that Jaster Bail would be interested in the Scarlet Eyes. Last I heard, the man had an affinity for rare coins. Surprising that he would be seeking any flesh items."
A clink from Trina's cup contacting the saucer was the only indication she had finished speaking. Kurapika barely turned in his lover's direction as he was absorbed in drinking his own tea while allowing Chrollo to handle the discussion.
Though, he had wondered what his lover planned to do considering their host's statement. Clearly, the woman was also suspicious.
Which Chrollo had since been aware of. He retained a level of calm regardless.
"Perhaps Mr. Bail hadn't made his interests publicly known. I was just as surprised when he proposed the idea. Didn't think anything else mattered aside from money, but I suppose that isn't the case."
To others, the prospect of collecting material objects may seem unorthodox - especially for what may be viewed as taboo, but it wasn't anything considered unexpected. Even by Chrollo's standards as he was an avid collector of rare treasures and fine works himself. For Trina, however, the woman acted as if she was foreign to the very notion.
It made Chrollo wonder as he found the aspect rather bizarre, considering her desire for obtaining flesh items. He stroked his chin in thought but decided not to linger for long lest the woman's intuition was to kick in and cause her to become even more suspicious. Keeping their facade going long enough to secure their deal was at the forefront of his mind.
So, he retained his usual, unreadable mask. The harder it was for Trina to anticipate his motives, the better. Bad enough that she was already invasive, and giving her any reason to push further would only hinder their objective.
Luckily, nothing in her posture gave him a reason to believe the latter had occurred.
Trina paused as she went to take another sip of her tea, but the action lasted only seconds, and she brought the cup to her lips once more. "I see." She commented, and the instance between which she finished with her tea when her eyes finally landed on the two men was rather lengthy. However, when she did, her gaze was no less hard. "Perhaps that is the case, yet, I still cannot dismiss the oddity of it. Call me overly impertinent, but it's something that I find rather uncharacteristic. Nevertheless," Trina breathed in sharply before resuming, "one thing I will say; it is an insignificant detail to the real matter at hand, which is the Scarlet Eyes."
Hearing Trina's dismissal after she stressed her unwavering dubiety regarding their supposed 'merger' caused Chrollo to expel a pent up breath. It wasn't typical of him to be apprehensive or paranoid in any given situation as he tended to remain confident in his experience and skills, but since there was much on the line, he couldn't help it. Damn it for getting restricted in going all out. Had that been an option, he and Kurapika would've been done by now.
But he respected his lover's wishes. Having faith and trust in each other was imperative.
"Yes, I agree," Chrollo responded, his expression unchanged despite what happened prior. He merely crossed one leg over the other and kept his hands folded in his lap. "Moving forward and coming to a decision is of the utmost importance. With our situation in mind, it comes down to your decision, Miss. Ashford. While my associate and I would greatly benefit from making this deal, in no way are we here to push you. If it helps any, we are willing to meet whatever price you set should you decide to sell."
With that, Chrollo leaned back again. Pertaining that his words were persuasive enough to motivate Trina, then securing the eyes should be inevitable. Combined with his charisma and influence, changing the outcome to suit their favor should be easy.
If anything, the prospect of receiving any amount of money desired would sway their host to make a sale.
The woman set aside her empty cup, and without hesitation, one of the maids darted forward to refill it. Trina barely acknowledged the girl as she did so, but nodded her thanks once she was done.
With a bow, the maid retreated to the back of the room.
"You present a rather interesting prospect, Mr. Lyssiref," Trina spoke, though she completely disregarded her tea this time. Her attention remained heavily focused on them. "The fact you're willing to pay whatever I want for the Scarlet Eyes gives me a reason to consider it." She trailed off and let her hazel eyes drift back towards the blond man beside him. Her smile returned when his deep blues lifted to meet them. "Pertaining, there is no limit to what I can ask for." She furthered, and that instant, Kurapika felt a shiver run up his spine.
He couldn't explain it, but a sudden wash of dread came over him, and the sensation he got was almost the same as the devious, perverted look he remembered the Priestess gave him back in Sorbia when they infiltrated the cult there. It was strikingly similar, like a tiger hunting prey, and Kurapika couldn't stop the unease he felt.
The only thing that seemed to calm his partially frayed nerves was Chrollo. He felt one of his lover's hands touch his arm, and when Kurapika snapped from his momentarily trance to face the older man, the look in those grey eyes was assuaging. Having Chrollo by his side was indeed a blessing.
Kurapika felt Chrollo brush his arm again before turning to face Trina. "Well, I did say that we're willing to pay whatever amount you want for them." He affirmed. "Just name your price. Money is no object at this point."
And almost instantly, that wicked smile returned to Trina's lips. Initially, she had no intention of selling the eyes as they were highly valuable and exceptionally rare. Not to mention, it was one of the very few things left of the Kurta clan. Yet, knowing the potential buyer was practically desperate to get his hands on them had motivated her to consider the idea.
In the end, what ultimately swayed her decision was how gorgeous both men were, though she took a particular interest in the blond one. Something about him intrigued her, and she couldn't get him out of her mind. But she wasn't about to deny the raven-haired man was also quite alluring.
Still. The shorter man - Curarpikt, seemed to draw her in like a moth to a flame, and while she wanted to learn more about Quwrof as well, Trina hungered to know all there was about his associate.
"In that case," she hummed, and her expression became more enthusiastic, "I am willing to sell them, but on one condition." This was her chance, her opportunity to rope in that strange and captivating young man. She would sell the eyes, but not before she got what she wanted out of him.
Perhaps she was greedy and planned to take them both for all they were worth, Trina still couldn't help just how enraptured she was by the ravishing blond man. Even his eyes seemed to relentlessly draw her in.
Not that Quwrof's eyes didn't also do the same, but she couldn't ignore the pull from the other man's magnificent blue pools.
All she had to do now was lay the finishing touches.
Chrollo raised an eyebrow at her statement, but let himself stay relaxed, and laced his fingers together. "Alright." He replied while watching her intently. "What is your condition, then?"
There was a moment of silence as Trina reached for her forgotten teacup before taking a sip from its contents. She then slowly lifted her gaze to meet them fully. "Not only do I want eight million in Jenny, but I also want him." She stated as a well-manicured finger was pointed in Kurapika's direction. "Something about him intrigues me, and I see no ring on his finger, so I don't see any reason to refrain from making such a request."
Silence descended about the room as it took Kurapika a long time to process what happened - even Chrollo looked utterly dumbfounded. Not only had Trina asked for an exorbitant amount of money, but the fact that he was included in the price had nearly caused his heart to stop entirely in his chest. The color drained from Kurapika's visage.
Even Chrollo struggled to compose himself. Nothing about it was remotely good as the entire concept was utterly outlandish. He expected Trina to demand an absurd amount of money in an attempt to maximize the profit gained, but he hadn't anticipated this.
"You can't be serious…" Kurapika spluttered, his voice wavy. "Why would you even consider that? I would never agree to it, and we hardly know each other to begin with!"
At that moment, it seemed like everything stood still, and Kurapika's breath hitched in his throat. Trina's words replayed over and over in his mind, though each time, it only made the revelation more and more unnerving. His hands clenched into fists at his side.
"Miss Ashford," Chrollo practically whispered from beside him, and Kurapika could tell his lover was strangely calm. "While I understand that you want to retain the value of the eyes with little loss, I did not think that extended to anything beyond materialistic."
Chrollo leaned forward and folded his hands together in front of him as he surveyed the woman with intense scrutiny. When it came down to it, he was willing to offer almost anything to her in exchange for the Scarlet Eyes, but adding Kurapika as a stipulation only irritated him.
It was a prime example of why he wanted to avoid any diplomatic conference and just steal the eyes. Now Chrollo had to figure some way out of their unforeseen dilemma without taking drastic action since he made a promise.
He seethed at the notion but kept his anger in check.
Though his response earned an even broader smile from Trina. She casually took another draw from her cup, all the while, her eyes remained closed. Every second of silence added to the growing tension in the room, but she ignored it. Staying calm in light of the outcome was necessary. Showing weakness or any waver in her stance would only indicate a lack of control.
No, she had to prove that she wasn't backing down. At least, not on her end.
When Trina drained the remains of her tea, she set the cup aside but dismissed the maid from refilling it when the lady tried. "Materialistic, now that is an interesting point." She trilled, and one of her fingers made its way into her lengthy brown hair and began to idly twirl it. "When you expressed a willingness to compensate for whatever price I set, I didn't expect any restrictions, specifically after I asked if there was a limit. To which you claimed there was none." The woman paused, her gaze firm on them. "Considering that, I do not think my request is unreasonable," Trina added, her voice devilish.
No matter what, she would have her way. Once her mind was made up, that was it. She had gotten used to getting whatever she wanted in life, and because of that, Trina wasn't about to relent. Her stare only intensified as she continued to watch them, determined to prove her resolve.
Either they would cave and meet her demands or walk away empty-handed.
However, Quwrof's demeanor abruptly changed, and it was then something about the situation that felt very wrong. The weight in the room grew more oppressive, almost as if the air was too thick to breathe, and what she saw in the man's eyes made her tremble visibly. There was a depth to them that looked almost abyssal, like someone indifferent to the world, and the very notion frightened her.
They seemed to bore into her own, like a wolf staring down its prey, though a smile remained on his countenance, and it made him appear menacing.
He leaned forward purposely. "I don't think you understand," Chrollo spoke calmly, though a dark undertone laced his words. "Of course, I am willing to pay whatever price is set, but in monetary value. Which means my partner isn't for sale." Steadily, his posture became more opposing, and he could see the dread form across her face as a result. "Just because he lacks any ring on his hand doesn't mean he isn't already taken."
And without warning, Chrollo grinned. Beside him, Kurapika observed every movement that was made, though startled by the suddenness of it all, and as the exchange went on between him and Trina, it only heightened his awareness.
From the way she was reacting, Kurapika hoped that his lover wasn't about to do anything that would go to the contrary of their agreement. Aside from trying to intimidate her - which he could clearly tell was taking place - the woman's subsequent reactions suggested more.
The room became eerily silent, and each second that ticked by was like an everlasting eternity while fully paralyzed. Processing what Quwrof said had slowly started to sink in, the weight of his words heavy, and measuring. Her mind swiftly tried to calculate any possible countermeasure, but each time she arrived at the same conclusion.
Any chance to up the ante with their current scenario was practically nil.
Her eyes then widened from the startling revelation. "Wait. Are you saying-?" Trina's voice trailed off when it became apparent. Was it true, and Quwrof was actually in a relationship with Curarpikt? It would explain his quick defense. "I never would have suspected." She commented further but remained cautious anyway.
Needless to say, despite the initial shock, the entire situation was amusing. While the subject of two men romantically together didn't bother her, Trina was still disappointed. She didn't blame Quwrof as who wouldn't want someone as gorgeous and noteworthy as Curarpikt? The blond man was really a prize.
Still. It was evident that Quwrof wasn't going to step back without a fight.
Chrollo smirked. He wasn't surprised that Trina reached the conclusion she did, considering how astute the woman appeared to be. In any regard, he wasn't giving Kurapika up. The Kurta was his and his alone. He vowed to protect his lover, and nothing would stop that.
"What you're assuming is correct," Chrollo confirmed, and he blatantly ignored the younger man's flabbergasted response. Incognito or not, their host had already figured out the truth. Now it was down to using just wits alone. "Curarpikt and I may be business partners, but we're also romantically involved as well." He sat back, but his voice continued to grow even more stern, every note cold and unwavering. "Nevertheless, he won't be included as part of the payment for the eyes. I can assure you of that."
Figuring out what their host was planning had been relatively easy, though her outright requisition is what ultimately confirmed it. To think someone else had been so brazen with an attempt to take Kurapika away from him.
He would never let it happen.
Again, the tension in the room escalated, and whatever portentous energy was emanating off the dark-eyed man, it had crippled her desire to further contest him. Trina sighed and reclined back in her chair. "I must admit, you are formidable, Mr. Lyssiref." She commented, though with slight disdain. "I had pegged you for someone who would be easily manipulated, but that really isn't the case." Trina expelled another laden breath, her posture suggesting she had conceded, but reluctantly.
The confession added to Chrollo's mirth, but he continued to observe her intently. At least she had given up on trying to challenge him.
"It pleases me to hear you acknowledge that." He purred, then raised a hand up to stroke his fingers over his chin. "However, where does that leave us now?" Chrollo furthered inquisitively.
Trina's gaze shifted between the two men, but she just shook her head. Continuing was pointless. "Since you have made your stance quite clear, there is no further need to progress with our negotiations. You can just have the eyes. My family has plenty of money, so payment isn't necessary."
Kurapika couldn't believe his ears, and for a second, the blond thought he had to pinch himself to be sure that it wasn't all some lucid dream. He spared a glance towards Chrollo, and his lover appeared just as dumbfounded as he was. It was strange that Trina Ashford was going to hand the Scarlet Eyes to them for practically nothing.
Although Kurapika had to admit, he was grateful that it ended the way it did as becoming some woman's pet was not his idea of a good time.
Besides, he only had eyes for Chrollo. Every beat of his heart was for the Ryodan leader, and him alone. No one else could measure up to the man who gave him every reason to live.
He then felt something touch the side of his leg, and Kurapika looked up to notice that Chrollo had flashed a grin towards him.
They had succeeded, and in the way he wanted.
"That is most generous of you," Chrollo responded, before nodding his approval. "Are you sure that you wouldn't like to receive money for the eyes? They are quite priceless."
She waved a hand dismissively despite that she was downtrodden to have lost. In her opinion, Curarpikt was more of a prize than the Scarlet Eyes. "No, it is not required. While I know the extent of their value, I obtained them on a whim because I was intrigued at the time. It matters not to me now." Trina sat forward, and without hesitation, the maid who had been in the room the entire time came to her side. "Valoria will fetch the eyes for you, then Dalton will see you to the front. That said, I have other important business matters to attend to and must take my leave."
Without waiting for either of them to respond, Trina arose from her seat and promptly exited. The maid who was beside her darted off soundlessly afterward, leaving Chrollo and Kurapika alone.
Kurapika tilted his head to face Chrollo. "That went better than expected." He hummed, unable to conceal the satisfaction in his expression. "I almost started to believe that it wasn't going to conclude peacefully. Not with how… persistent she was."
He shuddered at the remembrance of it, the very idea causing him to grunt in abject disgust. Becoming the object of someone's twisted desire was nothing but vitiating, and thinking about it resurfaced visions of his time in Debron's lab, which was a point in his life that he wanted to forget.
"Honestly, I was also beginning to reach the same conclusion, but fortunately, it didn't come to that," Chrollo commented in reply. Though he wondered if his lover had picked up on any instances of the anger that he felt earlier. It was hard holding back when the woman was acting so emphatic. He knew that he was possessive, but the thought of anyone laying their hands on Kurapika - much less hurting him - left a bitter taste in his mouth.
The very notion lit a fire deep inside that burned tempestuously and only left him with the unbridled urge to kill. Such was demonstrated when that freaky scientist attempted to do the unthinkable.
When it came down to it, no one harmed Kurapika and got away with it.
Chrollo's response caused him to huff, as he was able to detect the hint of chicanery in his lover's voice, but Kurapika refrained from criticizing him about it. Despite their agreement, he understood the man's reasons.
Right then, the maid Trina sent off earlier had returned while cradling something wrapped up in a red cloth. She approached them quietly before carefully setting the object down on the ornate table before them. "This is what my mistress asked me to give to you." Gently, she removed the cloth, revealing a canister with the Scarlet Eyes underneath. Afterward, she bowed then left the room.
Without hesitation, Kurapika reached over and picked up the canister slowly, his fingers lightly running over its surface before briefly closing his eyes. It took all he had not to succumb emotionally, but when he sensed Chrollo's hand gripping his shoulder, Kurapika exhaled to calm himself. Then, he handed the eyes over to his lover.
He waited until it was secure within the confines of Fun Fun cloth, then he looked towards the door. "We should probably get out of here," Kurapika uttered, but at the same time, the man who had escorted them earlier returned to the room and bowed in their direction.
"Miss Ashford sent me to see both of you out." He stated formally, his eyes locked on them.
Kurapika quickly glanced towards Chrollo, but the older man simply nodded at him, and in the next moment, they were being led from the room. It didn't take for them to return to the outside, nor to exit the property, and once they were alone again, he was finally able to completely relax. The entire situation had been stressful.
"Let's get back to the hotel," Chrollo announced from behind him. The suggestion never sounded better.
He concurred in earnest. "I agree wholeheartedly." And with that, Kurapika fell quickly into step alongside his lover, the manor slowly fading into the distance.
After everything, they had been through enough for one day.
After Thoughts: I'll have to say this encounter was lighter than ones from before and had a less traumatic outcome. The process was to show how some instances could be solved without using harsh violence and that the least savory methods can be applied in a worst-case scenario. It's really a lesson (or perhaps showing) for both Kurapika and Chrollo that at times, you can do things without using unconventional methods, but resort to them should things go south. Getting them to accept each other's principals I feel is just another way of slowly drawing them closer while deepening the bond they share, but also bringing to light their differences, which they have to get through together.
There will be many trials ahead, and plenty of obstacles for them to face, so there will be plenty more instances like we've seen in this chapter and ones from before. :)
