A/N: Hello dear readers, it's time for another update. Again, this installment was slightly delayed as I ran into a bit of trouble towards the end when writing it, so that caused it to take a little longer than intended. I also had to break it down into two chapters as opposed to one since this, too, grew quite long, and with how I plan for this encounter to go, it would have ended up becoming massive. So, here we are.
In any regard, it was still a fun chapter to write, and it also gave me the chance to focus on a few other elements of importance as well.
And last but not least, a huge thank you to SweetsDreamer for her continued efforts to beta RoF's chapters despite her relatively busy schedule.❤️❤️❤️
Summary: After Kurapika deals with his conflicting emotions regarding their new, unexpected companion, he and Chrollo continue traveling to the village of Fallyne. During the trip, something strange occurs.
The sensation of warmth on his skin caused Kurapika to awaken as blue eyes began to slowly open, pink lips parted as a yawn slipped passed them. A cool breeze rustled through the trees, and over his golden locks, the slight tickle it produced made him instantly brush aside the golden strands from invading his face.
Once the last vestiges of sleep faded away, Kurapika finally focused on his surroundings as his gaze swept over the campsite where he and Chrollo had taken rest. Once his brain fully caught up with him, he realized there was a weight around his midsection, and Kurapika turned entirely over to see another sleeping form next to him.
It seemed that Chrollo had decided to bunk up with him after all. The minute he attempted to dislodge himself from his lover's grip, the man tightened it before muttering something incoherent.
"Don't get up just yet. Lay with me for a bit longer," Chrollo said after managing to shake off the sleep clouding his mind.
His eyes then opened to the most beautiful sight ever. With one of his hands, Chrollo reached up to brush his fingertips over Kurapika's soft cheek.
The touch was gentle but subtle, and Kurapika leaned slightly into it. "Honestly," he breathed, although a slight frown accented his lips, "as much as I'd love to, we should probably get moving." Kurapika went to move Chrollo's palm when his lover's other hand motioned to stop him.
"Please," Chrollo whispered, though it was both a demand and a plea. "There is plenty of time yet, and it's still quite early. While you're right, and there is much to do, I just want to spend a little more time together before we start preparing." Again, he drew his fingers along Kurapika's jaw, but this time, he tugged on the younger man's arm with his other hand to show how intent he was.
His lover's adamance made Kurapika sigh, but he nodded in consent. "Alright." He uttered and moved to lie back down the second Chrollo's hand slipped away. The smug grin that soon accented his lover's visage caused him to huff, but he didn't attempt to contest the older man. "I just don't want to take too long," Kurapika added once he was back on his side facing Chrollo again.
"Oh, I promise that we won't." He responded before wrapping his arms around the younger man and drawing him close. "All I want is a few more minutes."
Kurapika raised an eyebrow at the comment. It sounded no less pretentious, but who was he to argue? Naturally, it was a penchant that Chrollo had, as his lover enjoyed the contact they shared, yet, there was no denying that he felt the same way. Anytime he was near Chrollo, the older man's presence, even his aura, had a sedating effect on him. Kurapika was sure it had been the reason why he had slept so well recently.
Not that he was complaining. Far from it. Getting proper rest was essential, and truthfully, Chrollo often scolded him if he didn't, so if being close to his lover gave him the necessary comfort that helped him relax, then so be it. Kurapika's gaze locked onto Chrollo's, his lover appearing gorgeous as the morning's first rays washed over his face.
"Are you sure that is all you want?" Kurapika commented in jest, though it was also an attempt to conceal the slight gasp that escaped his throat. Yet, it didn't halt the blush that rose along the skin of his neck.
Instantly, Chrollo's grin expanded. Kurapika was cute indeed. It was amusing to watch his lover try and hide his embarrassment, mostly because of something he did. The hue of crimson crept further along the younger man's neck as hints of it reached those precious cheeks, and it made Kurapika appear even more striking.
When bathed in the morning glow, Kurapika looked exactly like a divine being.
He slid two fingers beneath Kurapika's chin and drew his lover close. "Of course there is more that I want," Chrollo purred, and he came dangerously close to Kurapika's supple lips, "as you should already know. For now, I only want to hold you." Without another word, he darted forward and captured them with his own, the softness of those mounds pervading his every thought.
Shock instantly laced Kurapika's features, but he offered no resistance and fell readily into the gentle kiss. His eyes slipped closed while his lips moved slowly against Chrollo's; the warmth and tenderness caused him to gasp quietly into their shared lock. Because of that, and the feel of Chrollo's hands caressing along his back that he forgot all else. The world faded away, and all Kurapika could focus on was the contact he and Chrollo shared.
The response was something not entirely unexpected, but more and more, Kurapika was becoming malleable and accepting. When he returned the favor by kissing back with equal intensity, Chrollo took the opportunity to push his tongue inside Kurapika's mouth. Seconds later, the younger man's flavor permeated his senses, and it was all Chrollo could do to keep from taking the depth of their kiss even further.
Instead of giving in to his urges, Chrollo nipped the bottom of his lover's lip before deciding to pull back moments later.
Right away, their eyes locked on each other, and Chrollo could see the reverence swirling within their depths. Once he caught his breath, Chrollo let one of his hands sweep over and into the younger man's locks.
"Why am I not surprised by that?" Kurapika commented offhandedly, the sensation of Chrollo's fingers carding through his hair made him relax some. "You have never stopped being greedy." He added before abruptly leaning in to bite the side of his lover's chin.
Kurapika smiled almost deviously when Chrollo breathed out sharply as a result. Eliciting reactions from the older man was something he enjoyed doing as well. Chrollo wasn't the only one with ears that wanted to hear the pleasant sounds of bliss.
The expression on Chrollo's face turned from smug to utterly amused; it wasn't often that Kurapika was so candid. Hearing the younger man's terse statement made him feel slightly haughty. "You wound me by saying that, babe," Chrollo said in a factious tone while imitating a faux look of displeasure. "But you are not wrong." He furthered and moved in close to Kurapika's ear. "I am greedy when it comes to you." Chrollo then drew his tongue along the shell of his lover's ear, the taste of him undeniably strong.
Even Kurapika's scent filled his nostrils. It was just another aspect of the younger man that he couldn't seem to get enough of.
Chrollo's vanity didn't entirely surprise Kurapika as it seemed the older man took every chance to verbalize just who he belonged to. There was no disregarding that Chrollo was possessive of him, but who was he to contest that? Kurapika was no less possessive as the thought of Chrollo with anyone else made him utterly jealous.
It wasn't a factor he was outright vocal about, but past instances of Chrollo's unnecessary flirting had proved that much.
"You're letting yourself get too cocky again," Kurapika retorted sarcastically before reaching over to punch his lover in the arm. Although he knew how Chrollo felt about him, the way it was often professed was downright ridiculous. Yet, he still loved Chrollo to the fullest extent.
The older man's grin spread until it became toothy, and Kurapika was unable to stop from rolling his eyes.
"That's hard to do when I am around you," Chrollo commented, and then leaned in again to plant a soft kiss on Kurapika's plush lips. "I can't help myself sometimes because I am fortunate to have someone so beautiful in my life."
Crimson made its way even further up along Kurapika's skin, and he was able to feel the heat along with it. He reached over and playfully punch Chrollo once more, but this time on the man's chest before turning his head away. "Do you always have to be so presumptuous?" Kurapika muttered, unable to meet his lover's eyes.
Two fingers slipped beneath his chin before they brought him forward again. "Perhaps," Chrollo purred before dipping forward just enough to lick over Kurapika's lips, "but it doesn't change the fact that I will make it known you are mine." He felt a sharp pang as Chrollo bit his skin, but it wasn't harsh enough to draw blood. Kurapika groaned softly as a result.
It didn't take long before realization struck as his mood changed from amusement to incredulity. Kurapika shook his head, not entirely surprised by Chrollo's declaration - as the older man had shown his arrogance before - and expelled a sharp breath. While his lover wasn't wrong by his statement, the aspect that he always promulgated it made Kurapika feel annoyed.
Damn Chrollo for being selfish at times. Kurapika hissed quietly; regardless of how the older man behaved, he loved the big lummox anyway.
"I wouldn't be too quick to speak, darling," Kurapika cooed, his demeanor abruptly changing. This time, a mischievous look appeared on his visage. "Don't forget that while it may be so," he then fisted Chrollo's top without warning and pulled the other man close, "I won't hesitate to do the same when it comes to you." The smirk on Kurapika's face expanded before he swiftly darted forward to bite the side of his lover's neck just above his pulse.
If Chrollo decided to forget that he too belonged to someone, he had another thing coming. Kurapika bit down harder to emphasize his proclamation, and the gasp it earned him caused those pale lips to spread even further.
Chrollo wasn't the only one who shared that sentiment.
Once he was satisfied with the purplish mark that started blooming over tanned skin, Kurapika pulled back to look at Chrollo once more. He was quickly able to tell that his lover had enjoyed the experience.
"Well, well, that was unexpected," Chrollo responded while sounding pleased. "It seems that my precious angel continues to assert himself. I rather like it."
The gratified tone in Chrollo's voice drew a little more on Kurapika's aggressive side, but he merely watched his lover inquisitively. "Oh, do you now?" He raised a hand to trace one of his dainty-like fingers along the side of Chrollo's strong jaw. "Better get used to it because two can play at this game."
Kurapika then took the older man's lips in a quick, yet rough kiss before leaning back to look at him. After a few moments, he got up and out of the sleeping bag. Kurapika could feel Chrollo's eyes on him the entire time.
Quietly, he headed towards the center of camp, where the fire had turned into a pile of smoldering ash overnight. Using a stick, Kurapika proceeded to cover it up so that no hot coals remained when he caught sight of something dark just off to the side. He stilled, almost frozen in place when awareness caught up to him a second time. Looking at the sleeping form was a thorough reminder of precisely who shared the space with them.
He had nearly forgotten about the creature.
It began to stir immediately after, the sound of his rummaging the most likely cause for it to awaken. Kurapika was shocked to a fault the creature had stayed behind - specifically after how harsh he had been. Moments later, those red eyes were upon him, though curiosity flurried behind them more than anything.
"Good morning." The creature's voice rang out, and Kurapika slightly cringed. He still wasn't used to hearing them talk in his mind, but he attempted to deal with it anyway.
Kurapika was doubtful that he ever would.
Ignoring the creature's stare was impossible. "I am a bit surprised that you're still here." He commented dismissively and resumed his task of burying the now extinguished fire. From behind, Kurapika could sense his lover, but Chrollo hadn't approached them.
Amar tilted his head, quite curious by the blond man's statement. "Why wouldn't I be? You did promise to listen to me, and I still have information to hand off." He paused briefly before continuing as he absently watched Kurapika. "Besides, I did offer to help you and your companion in any way I can. It's only prudent that I stick around."
After he finished covering up what remained of the campfire, Kurapika went to clean up the items they used from the night before. He purposely avoided Amar's gaze, although he knew the creature was watching him. Whatever it was - or perhaps he already knew - Kurapika couldn't bring himself to face Amar, or look into his eyes.
While he had stated that there was no other purpose or hidden agenda, and only wanted to offer them aid, Kurapika had difficulty knowing that he was the same as those other beasts who had annihilated an entire city.
Maybe it didn't harbor the same hatred as the rest, and perhaps the creature did have peaceful intentions, it was still hard to accept after everything he had experienced. Kurapika even found that getting sleep was sometimes hard as the nightmares got so bad, they tended to keep him awake. Seeing those images, hearing their wicked voices, and smelling their dank breath was enough to wake him up in a cold sweat.
It was the biggest reason why he struggled with the concept of the creature joining them.
The sound of porcelain clinking brought Kurapika back to reality, and he placed the cups in a nearby pile for Chrollo to stow back in Fun Fun cloth. Then finally, his eyes meet Amar's. "Truthfully, a part of me expected you to just up and abandon the idea of helping us after how I treated you. The other part didn't even want to deal with the aspect of you being here. Granted, I am aware of your intention to help us and that you have information which may be of some use, but it's hard for me to even look at you without getting reminded of what happened." Kurapika turned away once again to begin gathering up the pot and utensils next.
He could see that Chrollo was behind him packing their sleeping bags, but it appeared his lover hadn't paid attention to the conversation, or he might have been far enough away to hear. Kurapika didn't bother trying to find out either way. Alternatively, he wanted to finish the task at hand so they could get moving. Regardless of the creature tagging along with them, he and Chrollo still had a mission to complete.
Nothing was going to stop that.
Nothing.
"I fully understand why you would have such reservations, and I do not blame you for it. What my kind has done is unjustifiable, which is something that I cannot merely excuse." For a moment, Amar paused, his attention firmly on the young blond man, but he felt a vein of compassion for the other. Behind those lucid, blue eyes was a myriad of emotions from pain to sorrow. Even hurt. Of course, he could tell there was happiness as well, but it was evident the young man had suffered immensely. The notion upset him. "With that in mind, I don't expect you to accept me, nor will I get angry over your distrust. If it helps any, I will prove myself to you."
Looking at Kurapika's rigid posture and indisposition pretty much summed up his visual analysis. Even the fact that Kurapika refused to make definitive eye contact told Amar the blond man was struggling with the concept of him being there. And not only that, but it also confirmed the presence of tension and stress because of it. Kurapika was having a hard time coping.
Thinking about it caused Amar to feel a pang of regret, and yet the urge between staying and pushing forward left him torn. Still, if he didn't work towards rectifying what happened, and right his kind's wrongs, he could never live with himself. Plus, Amar didn't want to carry the burden of guilt.
The sins of his kind were a constant reminder of why he despised their ways. After witnessing what happened with the two humans before him, it was enough to solidify his decision. Receiving forgiveness wasn't something that Amar wanted, not by a long shot, as he didn't deserve it any more than the rest of his kin did. Yet, if he could change the results to make things better than it currently was, or make up for it somehow, it might be enough.
At least, that is what he hoped for.
Kurapika clicked his tongue, but he didn't attempt to lash out. What the creature said, at least, sounded sincere. The tone to his voice was modest, almost timid. Even then, it was still hard getting past what Amar was. He was the very image of those vicious, evil creatures with their brutal and cruel ways. Knowing that, regardless of Amar's intentions, is what made him so reluctant.
For a moment, Kurapika closed his eyes before expelling a long, sharp breath. "I won't lie and say that I don't appreciate your honesty," he began while finally housing the courage to meet Amar's stare, "or determination to correct the mistakes of the past as both are commendable." He set aside the last few items that he and Chrollo used into the pile, then focused solely on the creature across from him. "I do believe that it took courage for you to come here and face us as you have, especially knowing the risks involved," Kurapika continued, but this time, his voice was a bit more firm, "which is something else that I can respect. However, the only problem is what you are and the connection you have with the rest of those like you." Once the last words left his mouth, Kurapika sat back while observing Amar. "Because of that, I don't know what you possibly could do to prove yourself."
It appeared that what he said had made an impact, as Amar's ears wilted ever so slightly. The creature looked crestfallen, but his posture remained unchanged. "Again, I understand your reasoning, and why you choose to be cautious," Amar responded, though carefully. "It makes sense that my presence would cause discomfort or unease considering past circumstances, but please be assured I won't do anything that will add to it." He wasn't surprised nor perturbed by the blond man's reluctance; the trauma his kind had induced was pretty severe. Amar practically bowed his head in response. "When it comes to how I will prove myself, perhaps it's best to let my actions speak for itself." From beneath his dark eyelashes, Amar could see the contemplation on the young man's face, his response holding some merit.
Negotiating with Kurapika, although challenging, was beginning to come along. While the blond man had his reservations, it seemed that he considered the possibility of changing his views. It wasn't an aspect that Amar figured would happen, at least not this soon, as both men retained the notion to extract discretion when it came down to him.
Not only was he a source of contention for the young man, but Amar could also tell that his companion was fiercely protective.
One wrong step, and he was confident it would be all over. Earning their trust would be onerous, given the circumstances. It was evident they were both extremely cautious, but the blond man was especially wary of him.
If anything, over time, he hoped to alter that.
"I see," Kurapika spoke after a few moments of silence, his lips still contorted into a partial frown. "Then I suppose I can deal with your company for the time being, although I feel it's against my better judgment." He stated and rose, the sound of dirt crunching beneath his shoes. "That said, I will stick to my initial statement, and if I find out you ever plan to betray us in any way, I will make certain it will be the last thing you ever do."
Amar watched as the young man stood up, their eyes locked on each other. "I accept your terms." He replied, confidence in his tone. "Don't worry." Seconds later, Amar bowed his head, the gesture meant to be a symbol of concession. "I will do whatever necessary to live up to your standards, and should I fall short, then you are free to do as you see fit with me." His affirmation seemed to appease the young man, which caused Amar to feel a semblance of relief. The inclemency between them had started to become taxing.
Satisfied with the creature's answer, Kurapika gave a quick nod, and right as he was about to turn, Chrollo had slipped up behind him. The suddenness of it made him stop rather quickly. "What is going on over here?" He inquired, grey eyes shifting between Kurapika and the small, dark creature across from his lover.
"Nothing noteworthy of getting mentioned," Kurapika commented offhandedly, and his attention landed on Chrollo. "We were just trying to get to know one another before all of us got moving again." He waved a hand dismissively before continuing. "I finished gathering the last of the items we were using and placed them over there for you to put away." Kurapika pointed to the small pile just beside them.
Chrollo raised an eyebrow at Kurapika's abrupt dismissal, the stoicism in his lover's demeanor making him a little suspicious. "Alright." He replied flatly. "I wanted to inform you both that I plan to head out in less than an hour. There is still a ways to go before we reach Fallyne, and I would like to get there before nightfall." As Chrollo started to walk away, he paused and glanced at Kurapika again. "Thank you for handling that for me, babe." He added, then strode off.
Kurapika watched the older man go before deciding to get ready as he realized that it was now late morning. Once he gathered the rest of his belongings, Kurapika headed towards the woods for a bit of privacy when the sound of nervous shuffling caused him to halt abruptly.
He turned and noticed the creature was standing there watching him intently. "Before you go," Amar continued, his voice low and resonated. "I wanted to thank you, as I am truly grateful." He commented while tilting his head slightly. Amar then paused as he formulated what he wished to say next. "Also, might I inquire what your names are?"
The statement caught him off guard, as Kurapika hadn't expected such politeness, but he regarded Amar with appreciation. "You're welcome." He replied evenly. Although he was still getting used to Amar being with them, Kurapika did his best to keep his emotions from getting the better of him every time he looked at the creature. They had promised to give Amar a chance. "My name is Kurapika, and he is called Chrollo." He answered after a minute of silence.
Amar took a moment to process what had been said, but he nodded in return. "Well then, you have my gratitude, Kurapika." He said pleasantly. A part of him had suspected the dark-eyed man was Kurapika's mate, judging from how close they seemed. While he wasn't used to seeing other beings get affectionate or fiercely protective of one another, their relationship must be strong.
It was an aspect that was never seen among his kind.
A faint smile formed on Kurapika's lips, and he gave a short nod before walking off to disappear behind the nearby trees. Amar expelled a pent up breath. He could tell there was unease within the young man, which made things difficult. Getting past that, well, it would be the tricky part.
Every time Kurapika looked at him, all he probably saw was the image of his kin. The very notion was troubling, but Amar couldn't denounce him for it. The pain Kurapika must have suffered was beyond his comprehension.
Once Amar managed to gather his thoughts, he rose and settled on helping his new companions expedite their upcoming move. Instead of dwelling on events, Amar felt it was best to divert his efforts elsewhere. He would have plenty of opportunities to smooth out the wrinkles between them, especially Kurapika. The last thing he wanted was for the young blond man to be afraid of him.
With a sigh, Amar sauntered off to the far end of the campsite and proceeded to finish what Kurapika had started. As not a word was said, the atmosphere was somber while the sound of wildlife and the wind became his only comfort.
It was late in the day, the sun hanging low in the sky, when they reached the edge of the forest and stepped into a large clearing. Beyond it lay the image of a few rolling hills. Flowers in an array of colors and types dotted the tall grass as they swayed in the gentle breeze. Chrollo moved ahead of Kurapika and Amar as he went to survey the land ahead.
"The distance between us and the village of Fallyne shouldn't be much further now." He announced while gazing back over his shoulder at the two behind him. Chrollo still found it odd to have someone else with him aside from Kurapika. "We just need to cross these hills before reaching the forest where the village resides." He finalized before stepping out into the large field.
Footsteps echoed behind him as Kurapika and Amar soon followed, though both had remained silent as they had since the beginning of their trip. There was no mistaking the awkwardness due to it.
Crossing the vast plain had taken just over two hours, and Chrollo felt the slight weariness in his bones by the time they reached the first line of trees welcoming them to the borders of Fallyne.
He stopped, then turned to face Kurapika and Amar. "From here, we should proceed with caution. Since you were filled in on our purpose here and the mission Kurapika and I are both on, you know what to expect," Chrollo furthered, his attention entirely on Amar. The creature genuinely appeared curious.
"You do not need to worry, I do understand." He responded with sureness and vigor. "Whatever you need of me, just say it. I won't do anything that will hinder your mission, or get in the way."
Pleased with Amar's response, Chrollo went back to watching the land ahead of him. For a brief second, his eyes turned towards the sky, and he realized how much time they had before sunset. "Alright then, let's get moving." He commanded and resumed trekking across the field before them.
Both Kurapika and Amar exchanged glances, but they readily fell into step behind him. The scenery soon began to open up and change as the sparse foliage bled away into another rolling field. They carefully weaved through the waist-high grass while causing the vibrant blooms to move as they pushed past.
Neither of them said a word. The atmosphere felt eerily silent aside from the chirping birds, the rustling of grass, and the small critters skittering about. Kurapika absently raised a hand to brush away the sweat that littered his brow; it was unbelievable how tired he was. Generally, periods of extensive walking never used to get so taxing, but now, it was hard to ignore.
He cast aside a large patch of grass, and his eyes caught sight of some unusual flowers. Kurapika stopped a moment to examine one of the particular blooms, his fingers dancing over its radiant orange pedals, and he immediately felt a brief pang of loss and regret. Flashes of his past raged through Kurapika's mind, and for a split second, he was reminded of home.
Amar noticed the disruption in the young man's posture, and he gently walked up beside the other. "Are you okay?" He questioned, though he kept his words soft.
The concern in Amar's voice drew Chrollo's attention, and he stopped before turning to see his lover seemingly in distress while the small, bulky Amar was hovering at his side.
Something had gotten Kurapika strangely emotional.
"Yeah, I am fine." He lied, although he knew that Chrollo most likely wouldn't believe him. "It's nothing."
His more than casual response made Amar tilt his head as Chrollo raised an eyebrow. The older man came in close, his expression curious. "I wouldn't say it was nothing as clearly it is something, love." Chrollo leaned over to brush aside Kurapika's locks as Amar quietly watched them.
"Well, I um-" Kurapika stammered before expelling a hard sigh, shoulders slumped. The last thing he wanted to do was make Chrollo worry. "Alright," Kurapika began while attempting to gather himself. "You see these flowers?" He questioned while laying one of them against his thin fingers. "They're called Morning Drops as they only bloom when exposed to the sun and are the same ones that grow around the forests of Lusko. Seeing them reminded me of home."
A sudden gust of wind swept through the area and caused the flower to lift from his grasp as it was carried along the air currents. The elegant twist it made while floating away nearly brought tears to Kurapika's eyes.
The sensation of a hand on his shoulder ceased any chance for those crystalline rivers to break free as concerned grey eyes met his own. "They are beautiful," Chrollo whispered tenderly before stroking feather-light along the edge of his cheek. Kurapika let slip the veil over his blue pools as the touch was comforting. "It will be okay, angel. I am here for you." He continued while smiling wistfully.
Kurapika felt an additional weight on him, and he cracked his eyes open to realize that Amar had also placed a paw on his arm. Both of them were watching him with troubled expressions.
Saliva began to pool in the back of his throat, and he swallowed thickly. Even the sight of Amar harboring concern for him made Kurapika feel a slight pang of regret. While his painful memories perpetually resurfaced every time he came across something that reminded him of the past, at times, it was still difficult to forget what the crux of his anguish was. Kurapika breathed out and delicately went about recollecting his emotions.
Although it took some effort, he had to keep telling himself that he couldn't give in to temptation, anger, and enmity. The demons were always muttering hateful words into his ear while attempting to lead him astray. To discount all that good Chrollo had done, what they stood for, and the unity they shared would be a grave injustice.
It wasn't to say that his lover was innocent of what happened more than seven years ago, but Chrollo was working hard to rectify his sins, and it was merely a factor that Kurapika could not disregard.
He used the back of his hand to wipe away the encroaching tears, then looked at Chrollo. "I will be alright," Kurapika commented after sniffling. Afterward, he continued gathering his composure and gradually stood. Amar's paw fell away, but he was able to feel the creature's soft fur brushing against his leg. It made Kurapika turn that faint smile towards him. "Thank you." He uttered, and then rose his hand to cup over his lover's.
The tenderness incited Chrollo to bend a little as he laid a kiss to the corner of Kurapika's lips. His thumb brushed over the edges of them before pulling back. "You don't have to thank me." Chrollo stepped back to gaze at Kurapika properly. The younger man looked so attractive beneath the afternoon sun. "I'll always be here for you." He said with honesty.
Knowing that Chrollo had an intense and undying devotion for him brought a smile to Kurapika's pale lips. He dried up the rest of his tears and shifted his attention to his lover, then Amar, with outward appreciation.
"Yes," Kurapika commented quietly, "I know that you will."
Seeing the younger man smile - while rare - made Chrollo feel pleased. Any time Kurapika was happy, even content, it left him with a sense of accomplishment. Every step he took to ensure that his lover no longer knew pain or sorrow was one in the right direction.
That was how significant, but special Kurapika was to him.
Gently, he helped guide his precious lover forward, and at that moment, a quick burst of wind rustled Kurapika's hair, which made it whisk about his visage. The image Chrollo saw made him realize just how tenacious but vulnerable the young Kurta was.
It took Chrollo a few seconds to regain his senses, but he cleared his throat before gesturing to Amar and Kurapika. "We should continue moving. There is still another half an hour or more to go before we reach the village." He then turned and resumed walking, Kurapika trailing behind him. Amar watched the men curiously before getting up and running after them.
The rush of water drew Kurapika's attention when he bent down to scoop it up with his hands and take a drink. It was cool, refreshing, mainly after he had spent almost the entire day on foot.
Beside him, Kurapika could make out Amar's figure as he bent down to dip his muzzle in the stream, the creature's tongue lapping almost lazily at the low, oncoming waves. Several times Kurapika drew the water to his lips while taking the opportunity to drink what he could before they made the final leg of the trip to the village of Fallyne.
When he was finally satisfied, Kurapika got up and ambled back to where Chrollo stood surveying the area. Since they were close, he wanted to be cautious in the event scouts were patrolling the forest. It wasn't long before Amar came trotting up beside them.
"So, which way do we go from here?" He inquired while peering into the thick foliage ahead. Even with how aphotic and dense it was, Amar was able to see through the shadows to find anyone moving among them. Luckily, nothing was currently there.
Only silence.
Chrollo slowly expanded his range of En to search for any signs of other presences in the vicinity, though it was unlikely he would sense those who weren't Nen users as Amar had proven that much. Still, none of them knew enough about the people of Fallyne, despite the information he currently had. If there were members among them able to wield Nen, they might have been adept enough to conceal themselves with In, which inadvertently, could make the situation more complicated.
Except for the few rare instances where he and Kurapika encountered other unknown Nen users, it wasn't often they ran across those like them, which at times was a good thing. Pertaining that all went well, it would be the same case here.
"The village is just a few meters north, which can be reached by going through the forest. From here, we should remain cautious," Chrollo stated while keeping a focus on the range in front of him. Although they were still some distance from the village, there was no telling how far Fallyne's territory extended. It was possible to cross the borders at any time - if they hadn't already - and quickly be seen as trespassing, so there was a constant need to stay on alert. "Once we get close enough to where the village can be seen is when we will make use of the trees." He concluded and took a couple of steps forward. Chrollo was able to hear Kurapika and Amar following him promptly.
An air of quiet settled around them as the light faded beneath the canopy overhead, the wind rustling through the trees, causing the mood to become decorous. Kurapika gazed towards the sun-streaked leaves as they swayed indefatigably in the breeze. Each gust of wind through their branches also reminded him of the same peaceful sounds from back home.
Several petioles dropped from above when a particular draft rustled through them, and Kurapika reached for one as they cascaded down to the earth.
The sight had captivated Amar's attention, and he watched the blond man with keen interest. It appeared that he was sentimental in a way, and was a vibe he sensed in Kurapika early on. There was no mistaking that he was strong and unwaveringly resolute. To see him in a moment of amenability left Amar virtually speculative.
When it came to humans, there was so much about them that he did not know or understand. Despite that he saw them differently than his kin, it didn't stop him from wanting to learn more about them. Of course, he did see the negative aspects that his kind saw, but there were just as many positive nuances about them that adamantly drew him in.
Amar was intrigued, no doubt, but something about both men was different than most, and that gave him even more reason to help them.
He breathed the cold air into his lungs. "How are you faring?" Amar questioned. His muzzle turned in the same direction as Kurapika, though he maintained a humble demeanor.
The voice inside Kurapika's head drew him abruptly towards the ebony creature who calmly trotted beside him, the image of those red eyes catching him slightly off guard. Getting used to hearing Amar's voice inside his head was difficult, primarily when it was unexpected. Kurapika huffed lightly. "I am managing the best I can." He clicked his tongue but refrained from sounding curt. Their new companion was only expressing concern.
"I see," Amar responded carefully and turned his eyes towards the path ahead of them. He briefly glimpsed the dark-haired man. "I suppose that is all you can do." He spoke as another gust of wind whisked through his soft pelt. "Which can work fine, and well, but it takes a strong will, and even stronger heart to face the world, even in the darkest of times." The words echoed in Amar's mind as it was something he remembered from his first time alone.
Back when he broke off from his platoon and ended up on his own, Amar had come across a kindly old human that had oddly enough shown no fear of him. During that time, he began to see not only the differences humans had but the wisdom they possessed.
Because of that, he realized the significance between his kind and other beings. It taught him how precious life was and that meaningless slaughter was only a pathway to a wretched existence and loss of a soul.
The experience gave Amar the foresight and knowledge to understand the depth of who he was and his kin's disreputability.
Sharing that with his new companions was one way of him seeking redemption.
Kurapika turned to glance at the small, ebony creature, though his eyebrow raised instantly. "Is that so?" He hummed, slightly amused. When it came to how harsh the world could be, Kurapika knew better than most. It wasn't something that he was unfamiliar with. "Do I truly come off as a person that is incapable of handling one's self, or inept at understanding what life entails?" Just hearing the comment surprised him. Kurapika couldn't believe that he gave off such an impression. Considering what happened to him after the massacre, nothing could be further from the truth.
"No," Amar spoke quietly, his focus never deviating from the path before him, "but what you make of it is the difference that separates the fiction from reality." He paused when Kurapika grunted due to his statement, those blue eyes growing even colder despite that he remained quiet. Amar could tell he was battle-hardened. "I am not saying you are callow, or nescient to the ways of the world, but merely stating that it takes an unbreakable spirit to take on the challenges that lie ahead and remain victorious. I can see it in your eyes, Kurapika." Amar continued. He turned to look at the blond man once again. "The burden of pain and the strain of sorrow. You carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. And this is despite that you have found a source of happiness to keep you tethered." Following his words, Amar nodded in Chrollo's direction, which made Kurapika blink abruptly.
So, their new companion already picked up on the aspect that he and Chrollo were together. Interesting. Not that his lover was subtle about it, but it seemed Amar's intellect was advanced like that of his kin. The creature was already able to detect that he had emotional struggles. Even if Amar wasn't precocious, he was observant for sure.
Listening to him had Kurapika somewhat conflicted. While the creature wasn't entirely wrong about his outlook on the world and life as a whole, contending with it was no easy matter. Kurapika knew that he had a lot of baggage from his past, and despite all else, he tended to take things for granted. It wasn't to say that he didn't want to be rid of the weight, but learning to let go had proved to be more difficult than Kurapika anticipated.
And yet, Chrollo was there helping him through it all.
Thin lips parted as Kurapika breathed out slowly. "You aren't wrong by saying that I carry the burden of both pain and sorrow." He quietly spoke while keeping his attention partially on Chrollo as he walked in front of them. Kurapika didn't want to make his lover concerned. "What I have endured and the horrors I have seen is far beyond your comprehension, so I don't expect you to entirely grasp the reasoning for the way I am." Kurapika clicked his tongue, then continued. "There are things I have done which I am not proud of, but every day I have to deal with the aspect of my weakness. All the pain and loss I have suffered is why I carry such a weight, even though I want to find a way to let go." He paused again while trying to steady his rapidly beating heart as thinking about his past and suffering only dredged up memories from that one point in his life. Kurapika sucked in a deep breath to keep himself steady. "I may have found the one thing that keeps me from giving in and faltering, but that doesn't erase what has already been done."
Kurapika trailed off after that, his eyes returning to the way ahead. He didn't expect Amar to understand or even sympathize, although the creature had expressed otherwise. It was crucial to make Amar aware that nothing was simple, especially when it came to his struggles. To think that all his problems would simply go away like magic at the wave of a hand was mere fantasy.
If Amar thought that was possible, then he was blinded.
"If I had to be honest," Amar's voice echoed again, making him turn back towards the creature who strode beside him, "anyone would be surprised by what I know. You witnessed what my kind is capable of, so you can only imagine the depths of malice that I have witnessed and experienced." So many times, he had been privy to the rest of his kin pillaging what they could. From items of magical use and rarity to incorporating anything with raw power. Even other creatures or entities weren't exempt. If there was a species that could potentially help improve their own, they were quickly assimilated. Those who resisted were killed. "So trust me when I say that I know what true horror looks like."
Instantly, Kurapika looked shocked, but the change in his mood quickly reverted to a more neutral state. "Forgive me. I meant no offense. It was impudent of me to think that I was the only one who had their fair share of negative experiences. Frankly, I had nearly forgotten who you are, or more so what you are." He grunted and looked away as not to come off sounding conceited.
For a brief moment, Kurapika had dismissed the fact Amar was one of the same creatures who had caused so much death and destruction, and that he couldn't have possibly encountered anything terrible. The words Amar had spoken reminded him that he was wrong.
The hasty response caused Amar to face forward as well, but he could still see Kurapika from the corner of his eye. It was evident the young man was conflicted, though his temperament was anything but. "Don't worry about it," Amar responded evenly. "I can't blame you for assuming that as it's easy to get caught up believing you're alone in the world. However, I just want you to bear in mind what I have said. It's not hard to become jaded, but don't let ignorance fool you." He fell into silence, and the reverberation of their footsteps soon replaced the echo of voices.
Kurapika didn't know what to say as his gaze moved to the ground in front of him. The movement caused his blond locks to fall forward, obscuring his face from view. While he couldn't immediately see Amar, Kurapika could readily feel the creature's presence. It was unmistakable that he wasn't angry or upset by what had transpired between them, but there was no doubt that he was miffed to a degree. Kurapika could tell Amar was only trying to help despite that his hatred for the creature's kin made him biased.
Coming to accept that one of them was possibly different from the rest was still a hard pill to swallow, but so far, he didn't sense any malicious intent coming from Amar.
Several minutes passed without them saying anything, and thankfully, Chrollo had remained quiet through the whole exchange. Either he refused to speak, or he possibly didn't hear them. Whatever the case was, Chrollo didn't indicate one way or the other.
The gradual change in the light drew Kurapika's focus away from the ground as the sky's colors were slowly fading from reds and oranges to purples and blues. Before long, they would be within the range of viewing the village, so the time to talk was bleeding away. After what happened, Kurapika felt inclined to clear the air with Amar, though before he could, the creature abruptly stopped, and he looked up to realize that Chrollo did too.
His lover appeared on guard.
"Is everything okay?" Kurapika asked while surveying the trees around him warily. Yet, his question went unanswered as Chrollo kept standing there, unmoving like he was searching for something. Then, his lover's head snapped to the right.
Chrollo held up one of his hands. "Quiet." He commanded and resumed watching the trees. Seconds later, a sound drew his attention to the right again. "Did you hear that?" Chrollo inquired in a hushed tone, hoping the silence would confirm if he imagined it or not.
"Hear what?" Kurapika peered into the forest while straining to catch anything out of the ordinary, but all he heard was the noise of the local wildlife.
Instead of responding, Chrollo kept inspecting the area around them, his mind reflexively seeking the source of anything abnormal, especially odd sounds. Yet, he could have sworn he heard more than just the animals scurrying around.
Then, Chrollo perceived what he thought was a voice, its tone hurried and desperate. He took a few steps forward in the direction of the sound, the forest still around him, and caught it again. Chrollo then knew that his ears weren't deceiving him.
He glanced over at Kurapika. "A voice. Someone is out there calling through the trees." Chrollo faced the growing darkness before him as the lengthening shadows from the slowly dying light crept distinctly over the forest.
Again, the voice rang out through the forest.
Kurapika moved closer, his senses sharpened, and perception clear, but all he could make out was the faint trill of a few birds and the clicking noises from different insects. His mouth twisted into a slight frown as the young Kurta started to wonder if his lover was becoming senile when he stopped abruptly. Kurapika's head snapped in the same direction as Chrollo.
It appeared the older man wasn't wrong.
"Now, I hear it too." He commented just as Amar turned in the same direction. The creature's ears moved stiffly forward.
"As do I. It seems like someone is calling out. The voice is pretty distinct," Amar supplied, curious as to who else was out there.
The notion made Kurapika turn to face Chrollo. "Whoever it is, they may be in trouble. I say that we should check it out." He concluded. Kurapika was dead-set on the matter.
Chrollo stroked his chin absently, though he didn't plan on opposing his lover. Were he alone, then he wouldn't have any inclination of helping. But this was Kurapika, and Chrollo wanted to keep showing the younger man that life mattered more to him than just the superficial.
Doing so was one way of showing Kurapika that he was more than some cruel monster.
"Agreed. We should go find out what is going on. There may be someone who needs us," Amar interjected, his attention fixed on the shrubbery ahead. Again, the sound of a voice echoed throughout the area, which caused him to feel a semblance of urgency, and he unconsciously took a few steps towards the treeline.
Grey eyes shifted between Kurapika and Amar as both appeared ready to dart into the forest at any given moment. Despite that he wasn't precisely avid on providing support to a stranger since he and Kurapika had incurred so many enemies, Chrollo was sure that his lover would chastise him if he didn't go along with it. Naturally, he had agreed, but not because he was intent on the idea.
Once more, the voice resonated around them, and Chrollo knew what the answer was. "Alright," he uttered, tone firm, "but we need to continue extracting caution. There is no telling who or what we may run into." Chrollo rolled his shoulders before moving forward to slip easily between the trees. He could sense that Kurapika and Amar had also done the same.
Everything seemed to blur almost instantly, the forest, the sounds, even the speed at which they went. The pounding of heavy footsteps seemed to commingle with the repetition of heavy breathing and the sonority of desperation. Gradually they got closer to the source, and other strange noises soon filled the air. This time, the voice rang out as a sheer cry, the person sounding as if they were distressed.
Swiftly they ran towards it, and moments later, Kurapika stepped into a small clearing where the sun's reflection hit the trees just right, so they appeared to be on fire.
Both Chrollo and Amar came up behind him just seconds afterward. He scanned the vacant area while paying attention to every detail, his primary focus on finding whoever it was that had been calling for help. Then, Kurapika noticed it, the slight shuffle of a figure off to one side of the clearing.
As he got near it, Kurapika realized the figure's sheer size, which proved that it wasn't even human. Its body was also covered entirely in fur. Whatever had the beast's attention, it hadn't noticed his slow approach.
Until he made a grievous error that caused him to trample on a few dry branches as the cracking noise brought two angry eyes onto him. Kurapika hissed.
He backed up hesitantly while trying to avoid breaking contact with the beast as it snarled at him. It was clear that it wasn't about to be trifled with. The chiming of metal soon mirrored Kurapika's movements as he prepared to unleash his fury when the sound of quiet sobbing reached his ears. To the immediate left of the hulking beast was the form of a young girl.
She appeared battered and frightened, her clothes torn and covered in dirt. Kurapika shifted his gaze between her to the brute that stood between them. It growled lowly at him and rose deliberately onto its hind legs. When the beast finally moved from the shadows and into the slowly fading light, he realized what it was.
Gon had mentioned the same creature several times from when he was on Whale Island. The Foxbear.
Kurapika was surprised to encounter one, especially given the circumstances of their location, but debating how would only be egregious.
Instead, he glanced over his shoulder at Chrollo and Amar as they were inspecting the area opposite of him. "Guys, I found someone! However, we also have a much bigger problem…" The Foxbear snarled at him again, but this time, it advanced with fangs bared. Kurapika gritted his teeth and inched backward more as his right hand came up before him, the chains upon his fingers rattling incessantly. Right then, both Amar and his lover came up beside him. Chrollo grunted while Amar growled as his ears laid back against his head.
"What is that?" He questioned fervently, his own fangs exposed. "I sense nothing but hostility and aggression coming from it."
The beast's reaction made Chrollo's Benz knife appear fluidly in one of his hands, and he positioned himself. "Creatures such as this are ones that I am unfamiliar with, but I won't disagree on the aggression part. It seems this thing is looking for a fight." He commented derisively.
As his lover and companion approached, Kurapika shifted between looking at them, the girl, and finally, the Foxbear that seemed intent on mauling them.
Unfortunately, Gon wasn't there to use his innate skills for taming and calming wild animals. Kurapika's focus became fixed on the beast. "It's called a Foxbear. They are known for being very territorial. Why one is out here, I can't say." The beast growled at them for a second time, but it was much more menacing than before.
Large, claw-like paws came up as if the Foxbear was ready to strike, and when it attempted to swipe down at them, Kurapika ducked to the side while Amar and Chrollo jumped back. It hit the ground with such force that dirt and rocks were flung haphazardly into the air around them. Deciding not to wait further, Chrollo bolted forward, his knife poised before him as he lunged at the beast, the tip of it aimed to bite deep into its flesh. Right before he managed to land a blow, the Foxbear arched its body and brought one of its paws down again, but this time, just barely missing his side.
The result stunned Kurapika as he watched the scene unfold. It reminded him of the one time where Chrollo nearly died to a stab wound on the same side, and without hesitation, he took off towards the beast, silver chains snaking predatorily around him. Automatically, Kurapika launched his Dowsing Chain at the Foxbear, its length managing to coil around the beast's massive frame.
Instantly, it snarled, low and guttural, those red eyes lingering on him with intense disdain. For a brief moment, Kurapika's own eyes flashed a bright crimson before returning immediately to their cold, passive blue as he pulled roughly on the chain, the metal constricting around the Foxbear mercilessly.
A loud, sharp howl exited the beast's maw as the silver encompassing its body began to tighten. Dark brown lips curled back, revealing even more serrated fangs, and without any warning, the Foxbear lunged forward, intent on snapping its jaws volatilely around him. Kurapika barely had enough time to get out of the way, but not without receiving an injury to his right arm. The abrupt movement caused him to stumble and land on his knee, though once Kurapika managed to straighten himself and get back on his feet, he noticed the thin rivers of blood running down from the area where his clothes had gotten ripped.
Kurapika clicked his tongue in exasperation at the sight of it. The appearance of thin, crimson rivulets dribbling along his arm only furthered his vexation. The fact the creature was insistent on attacking him was causing his patience to wane. He jerked hard again, this time, with a second attempt to constrict his chain around the massive beast. The exertion made Kurapika grit his teeth as the slight pain he felt from the wound on his bicep made him strain. As he continued to pull, the length of silver stiffening further, the Foxbear fought back even harder, its mass only growing more rigid as it tried to break free of its physical constraints.
Every ounce of stamina Kurapika had was forced into withholding the creature, although the situation was looking bleak. No matter how much strength and energy he put into detaining it, the Foxbear seemed to match him move for move. Kurapika could see it, even sense it, the beast was slowly being able to withstand his chains, and he wasn't sure for how much longer he would be able to hold it at bay.
Again Kurapika tried to increase his hold, and the chain trembled as it reacted to the stress of his emotions, but the Foxbear thrust forward to snap at him seconds later. The sudden incursion made Kurapika dive away from the beast's incoming jaws, though it caused a brief slack in his grip.
After coming to his senses, he quickly reoriented himself, but the momentary lapse in his domination had given the Foxbear enough room to break free of his chain. Though, it wasn't before Chrollo had charged at the beast for a second time.
The shriek it released tore raucously through the surrounding forest, the sound hoarse, but dismal, and was followed by another the instant Amar joined the fight. His jaws sunk violently into the Foxbears flesh, the act eliciting a more baleful cry. At the same time, a faint smile crawled over Chrollo's caramel-hued lips, and he plunged his Benz knife even deeper into the beast's gut.
Blood sprayed copiously into the air as it doused his face and body along with the ground. The Foxbear wailed again then stumbled backward, its claws lashing aimlessly this time as it attempted to hit whatever target it could. Amar took the opportunity to clamp his jaws down in hopes of felling the beast but doing so only instigated it to react.
One of the Foxbear's paws swung at Chrollo, knocking the older man back and into a tree before managing to shake itself with enough force to dislodge him from its back. The abrupt countermove nearly caught Amar off-guard, but he managed to stop himself in time and quickly landed on his paws.
During the entire exchange, Kurapika stood there, cradling his injured arm. Surprise crossed his pale features when Chrollo moved in to attack, which turned into astonishment at witnessing Amar join the fray, that soon bled into disbelief at seeing Chrollo get slung around like a practical ragdoll.
Fury welled up inside of Kurapika as he prepared to launch another assault against the Foxbear, his chains whipping viperishly around him. However, the second he took a step, the creature whimpered and staggered forward before crashing to the ground in a massive, bloody heap.
Several minutes passed while Kurapika observed the beast as it laid there, breathing in shallowly. Eventually, it succumbed to the fatal wounds inflicted upon it, and the Foxbear's eyes soon went lifeless.
Kurapika tore his attention from the corpse in front of him and rushed over to Chrollo as he lay against the base of a tree. He knelt to examine his lover. "Chrollo," he whispered and placed a thin hand on the older man's cheek, "are you alright?"
Immediately, his eyes opened and fixed on Kurapika. "Yeah, I will be fine." He groaned then raised one of his own hands to cup it over the younger man's. "Don't worry about me. Go check on the girl," Chrollo added beseechingly.
Kurapika's lips pulled into a thin line at the suggestion. He stayed there, unmoving and uncertain about leaving Chrollo's side, but the commanding look in his lover's eyes made him think otherwise. Nodding, Kurapika got to his feet and started to wander off, though not before he turned to gaze back at his lover. "I'll be back for you." He stated, then moved off to where the young girl was.
As Kurapika got close, he realized that Amar was already there, the ebony creature already tending to the frightened youth.
She looked up upon his approach, though fear and distress wavered through her light brown eyes. "It's going to be okay." He said gently, although she shied away when he knelt beside her. "You're safe now."
The way she reacted didn't surprise Kurapika at all as such demeanor was expected, but he tried to coax her anyway. It was evident that she endured a traumatic experience. Kurapika extended his hand a second time, but the girl only backed up more.
"Please don't hurt me." She pleaded, voice trembling. Her arms rose to shield herself.
Bewilderment laced over Kurapika's features, and he leaned back marginally with a frown. It bothered him that she was startled by his appearance. "I am not here to harm you, and there is nothing left for you to fear. I promise," Kurapika stated calmly, a smile replacing the frown that was once there. He tried extending his hand again.
Her gaze darted hesitantly between the young man and his hand until something in the way he smiled made her feel confident that he wasn't there to do any wrong. She placed her smaller hand into his and was instantly hoisted up. "Who are you?" The girl questioned after she was fully back on her feet.
Knowing that she was a little more comfortable eased Kurapika's mind, and he reached into the pouch at his waist to retrieve a small bottle of water. "My name is Kurapika," he responded before offering it to her, "and who might you be?"
There wasn't any hesitation when she reached for the bottle, her fingers curling around it graciously. "Oh! I am Amelia." She exclaimed and popped the cap. The water was refreshing.
Just as the young girl finished drinking, Chrollo came up beside him. Kurapika's eyes swept over his lover, but the older man appeared to be okay. He expelled a pent up breath. "Also, these are my companions. The tall man's name is Chrollo, and the ebony creature is called Amar." Kurapika paused and let his attention fall back on Chrollo when his inconspicuous gesture called for it.
"Do you have any idea why she is out here, and alone for that matter?" He asked quietly after leaning close to Kurapika's ear. "I find it quite strange in all honesty."
It was a question that Kurapika had wondered about himself, but he merely shook his head. "No clue. Though, I find it no less strange than finding a Foxbear out here. From my understanding, those are relatively indigenous to Whale Island. There is no telling how it managed to get this far." He stopped and turned to examine the girl again.
From the look of it, she was likely around ten to eleven, possibly twelve years old. Her posture and attitude reminded Kurapika so much of Gon. Amelia's bright eyes shifted from him to Chrollo, even Amar, but the fear he saw earlier was gone.
"Perhaps it would be best to inquire as to why she is in the forest by herself. It's quite evident this place isn't exactly safe," Amar chimed in, the statement bearing nothing aside from the truth.
Kurapika sighed, and his focus fell back on the young girl. "Are you from around here, Amelia?" He inquired gently. "And can you tell me why you were out here in the forest by yourself?"
Silence descended around them, and it took her several moments to process what was said to her as a slightly contemplative look masked her features. While situations such as these would typically call for express caution, they had saved her life, especially the blond-haired man. Giving them a reason for her time in the forest wouldn't go against the rules. Would it?
"Why, yes!" She exclaimed, her voice cheery. "I am from the village of Fallyne and was sent out here to gather special herbs. That creature attacked me when I went to inspect a few other plants that I thought would also be useful in making medicine." Amelia abruptly ceased talking and immediately searched the area until catching sight of what she was hunting for. The next thing she did was hold up a brown wicker basket in front of her. "See? It is what I was using to gather everything." She continued jovially.
Despite the item that was held up in front of them, the mention of Fallyne had instantly grabbed Chrollo's attention. While he hadn't expected to run into anyone exploring the forest, primarily a girl of all things, the fact she was from Fallyne made the whole encounter worth it.
His lips formed into a grin at the notion. There was a chance that she would be their ticket into the village. "It may be pure coincidence, but the fact this girl is from Fallyne may be our way of getting inside," Chrollo uttered to ensure that he was out of earshot.
Hearing such an idea had Kurapika slightly dismayed as the idea of using someone, specifically a child, didn't sit quite well with him. But if it would help them get into the village without sneaking in, he was all for it. The thought of climbing trees to spy on the people was no more appealing.
Amelia held the basket even closer to him, and Kurapika faced her while remaining amicable. "I see," he commented, then peering succinctly into it, "you did manage to collect quite a few, particularly the Bocca plant." Kurapika reached over to give Amelia a gentle pat on the head. It made the girl smile.
"You know about those?" She asked rather quickly, her eyes lighting up at the notion.
The girl's enthusiasm was notable. Her personality was almost a carbon copy of Gon, and in so many ways, they were practically alike. It was uncanny how much of his friend he saw in Amelia. "Of course," Kurapika conferred, "I used to dabble in herbs back home, so I know a bit." Following his statement, his expression turned somber. "However, it isn't entirely safe out here. I think it would be best if we get you back to the village. And besides, it's getting late."
When the words left his throat, the sound of shuffling drew his attention back towards the trees surrounding them. Kurapika could see that Chrollo and Amar had also done the same.
Only seconds passed before several figures exited the foliage. As they entered into the failing light, it revealed the newcomers were tall men dressed in tribal clothing carrying large spears. Almost instantly, they all went on guard.
"Kabaal!" Amelia shouted, and ran towards one in particular who appeared heavily muscled with his upper body completely exposed. The man had a steeled expression, but it softened the moment she reached him.
One of his hands reached over to pat her on the head. "Amelia. What are you doing out here?" He inquired, the tone to his voice was protective, almost fatherly. "And who are these people?" Kabaal retracted his hand, and his eyes fixed hard on the three strangers across from him.
Amelia giggled from the affection she was shown. "Oh them. It's okay, Kabaal. They saved me from that creature over there. It attacked me while I was out gathering herbs for the village." She furthered and held up her basket again, this time so the large man could see down into it.
"I see," Kabaal hummed, and his focus broke from the strangers to the massive, tawny beast that laid dead on the cold ground. He then stroked his chin, reflective of what to do about their current situation. "I suppose you are the ones that saved Amelia from that creature?" Kabaal asked derisively as his eyes led back to the two strange men accompanied by another creature that he had never seen before.
Kabaal's cold, stern gaze weighed heavily on them, which Kurapika immediately felt. He glanced at Chrollo from the corner of his vision, but his point of convergence was the one who addressed him. From their stance, if the answer he gave wasn't sufficient, Kurapika was sure they wouldn't hesitate to run them through with those spears. "Yes." He began slowly. "We were traveling through the forest while heading east towards Esban and ran into Amelia as she got attacked by that beast. It is known as a Foxbear." He stopped to nod at the body to his left before resuming. "The three of us managed to kill it before it could do her any harm." Kurapika finalized carefully.
Silence followed his statement, and Kurapika almost started to worry the information he provided wasn't adequate. Tension mounted, and he felt a twinge of nervousness. Even his chains chimed slightly from the change in his mood.
"Esban, you say?" Kabaal questioned skeptically, his eyebrow raised. "That is pretty far from here. How did you manage to end up in the forest?"
Kabaal's suspicion put Kurapika on edge as he didn't want them to catch onto what their actual intention was. If the man learned that they were heading towards the village to spy on them, much less pilferage the eyes their mystic had, it was sure to spell trouble. He wasn't exactly keen on fighting these people.
Before speaking, Kurapika breathed in slowly. "It's pretty simple. We got lost while navigating the road back along Rusthill pass and ended up in this region. I figured that if we cut through the forest, we could make our way back without losing too much time."
Once again, there was a moment of reticence as it seemed Kabaal was processing what he said, although much of it wasn't accurate at all. Kurapika had quickly forged together a story using what knowledge he had learned about the area, hoping it was solid enough to keep them from getting killed on the spot.
Although he hated the aspect of lying to people, the situation they were currently in didn't leave room for much else.
Finally, Kabaal addressed him, the look on his face giving Kurapika partial reason to relax. "I see," he reiterated, though with less scrutiny this time around. "That is rather unfortunate. Sometimes travelers manage to get lost on the pass if they aren't familiar with it, so I can see how it ultimately led you here." He gazed down at Amelia, who was still grinning. "With that in mind, I think that perhaps, we can take you to the village in the meantime. Not only will it be nightfall soon, and this forest is considerably dangerous after dark, I am sure our chief would like to thank the people who saved his granddaughter's life personally."
Granddaughter? Kurapika was nearly floored. The last thing he expected was for Amelia to be a family member of the village chief. He could almost feel Chrollo's smirk from behind him. Damn that arrogant, smug son of a bitch.
"Yet, you love him all the same." A voice quietly reminded him.
It seemed his clan always wanted to ensure that he never forgot that.
"We would be honored to accept your offer. Normally, I wouldn't be so inclined to intrude, but considering our current situation, I think it may be for the best. Not that I wish to decline the chance to meet your chief."
Following his admission, Kabaal held up a hand, and the hunters around him lowered their spears without query. Amelia scooted forward and back towards the young blond man. "Now, you get to see our village." She chirped, cheeks virtually flushed.
"Yes." He replied wearily, though he was glad to be rid of the persistent tension. "I can hardly wait."
Amelia giggled again and then went back to stand beside Kabaal. "Come with us. The village is this way." He gestured before turning, the men to his left and right doing the same.
Kurapika quickly fell into step behind them with Chrollo and Amar on both sides of him. Some time passed without them saying a word, and then his lover abruptly leaned in close. "Good thinking back there." He said with an underlying tone of gratification. It didn't shock Kurapika that his lover was showing a vein of arrogance. "I didn't expect you to be so convincing. You know how to be cunning when there is a need for it." He added with a bit of sarcasm.
Chrollo chuckled afterward and pulled away, leaving him to chew on the words. Amar glanced up at them curiously but said nothing instead.
They continued trekking through the forest while making their way towards the village, and all Kurapika could think about was the fact they manipulated their way in, but at the extent of using a child in the process. Not to mention the intricately fabricated story he forged just to deceive the huntsmen into taking them there. Kurapika swallowed thickly, his throat tight from the notion alone.
Prevarication and the use of underhanded tactics weren't something Kurapika cared to facilitate as it went widely against his morals and convictions. Yet, the fact that it was done to necessitate the completion of their mission helped lessen the bitterness it gave him.
Casting the thought aside, Kurapika tried to focus on the goal ahead, and his sole objective to retrieve the Scarlet Eyes. While he still planned to do whatever was necessary to get them, if he could avoid bringing any harm to Amelia, he would. She was innocent, and in no way would he do anything to violate that.
With his silent proclamation, Kurapika continued walking alongside Chrollo and Amar as they followed the village huntsmen and into the unknown.
After Thoughts: I hope this chapter was enjoyable. It definitely turned out to be a bit harder to concoct than I expected, especially the fight scene with the Foxbear, as I had to decide on how I wanted that to go. But I figured that, while I did want our boys to encounter some type of beast while making their way to Fallyne, I had figured that a Foxbear would be interesting since we only know of them to reside on Whale Island. And for one to pop up elsewhere would make for an interesting concept.
That also allowed me to touch on Gon a bit as well since Kurapika's thoughts of his friends would continue to be a driving force for him to keep going, although he is hella bad at staying in contact with them. Lol.
Don't worry. He hasn't forgotten about them. ;)
With the next chapter, things will begin to pick up. Especially the interaction between Kurapika and Amar.
Oh, and lastly, any reviews, comments, feedback is greatly appreciated! No matter how small, detailed, critical the comment is, all are welcomed. :)
