Thank you to Aragorn II Elessar and Phillipe363 for their help with this chapter.
Screw Loose: So, because you feel a certain way about a certain character, you feel entitled to tell me how to write my story? Seriously?
It is a sunny day, birds chirping on a grassy field. A man is spinning dazed, a mark of lipstick in the shape of a woman's lips smeared on his face. A man in a suit, flanked by two soldiers wielding futuristic guns approaches him. As the man notes it was a beautiful day, the man in a suit wipes of the lipstick with a napkin, examining it. It's revealed the man is hallucinating as they stood in the corridor of a ship, the result of hallucinogenic lipstick. "She's here," the man in the suit declares.
"Well this one's already proving to be interesting," Jack noted.
"Hallucinogenic lipstick. It's either in the future or another planet; we don't have those on earth. Who is 'she' though?" Martha wondered.
"I think we're about to find out," Mickey noted.
Elsewhere on the ship, a shot of a woman's feet in high heels walking is seen. The recording pans up, revealing she held a gun. The woman turned and fired, her shot hitting a locked vault. The shot unlocks it, revealing a black box in it held in the center. Walking into the room, the woman turns the box over before changing the setting on her gun; the woman turns it into a torch and begins burning something into the box.
"A Home Box," Jack said in surprise.
"You know what thing is?" Mickey asked and Jack nodded.
"They were very new by the time I joined the Time Agency. It's a sort of emergency alert for Galaxy Class Starships. When there's an emergency, the box ejects from the ship and returns to its home planet to give whoever's in charge the details about what happened," Jack explained.
"Like an Emergency Alert system," Wilf said and Jack nodded.
"Exactly like that Wilf. But I'm not sure why this women, whoever she is, is torching one," Jack said in bewilderment.
"Spoilers," Jane said with a grin and Donna got another strange sense of déjà vu.
The woods 12,000 years later is shown on the screen. The Doctor and Amy are shown at a museum, The Doctor criticizing what he knows is wrong, noting he loves museums. Amy complains he promised to show her a planet but The Doctor tells her this is the Delirium Archive, the biggest museum ever made. Amy doesn't see the appeal after the TARDIS as he comes upon a display. The Doctor declares this is one of his as Amy notes museums are how he 'keeps score'.
"Of course he does. That is so him," Martha said amused.
"Only you would get in a competition with archeologists Spaceman," Donna said with a laugh.
The Doctor comes upon a display of the box from earlier. As The Doctor looks at the symbols burned into it, Amy joins him, dismissing it as old box. The Doctor explains that it's a Home Box, which is like a black box but it homes. But what interests The Doctor is that the writing on the box is in old Gallifreyian, the language of his people.
"Gallifreyian, so that woman was a Time Lord?" Wilf asked shock.
"The Doctor might not be the last one," Martha said in disbelief.
"Not exactly," Jane said, wondering how'd react when they finally learned the truth.
A shot of the woman burning the symbols into the Box is shown as The Doctor explains the history of the symbols. Amy asks what it says. "Hello Sweetie."
"Oh," Donna said, remembering River's greeting of The Doctor at the Library. "You mean that's-"
"Don't spoil it," Jane said, fighting a grin.
"Spoil what?" Mickey asked as the others looked at the two women in confusion.
"Just watch," Jane said no longer even fighting the grin.
On the ship, the woman is revealed to be River Song, wearing sunglasses as she steps out of the room. She looks at a security camera, lowering her sunglasses and winks. At the Delirium Archive, alarms blare as The Doctor and Amy run, the Home Box thrown under The Doctor's arm. Security pursues them as they head into the TARDIS.
"Well, I guess The Doctor can cross 'steal from a museum' off his bucket list," Jack noted amused.
"She got him to steal the Home Box with just two words. She must know him pretty well," Martha noted in a mix of disbelief and interest.
"You have no idea," Jane said with a slight smile.
On the ship, security catches up with River as the man in the suit walks up behind them, greeting River as 'Dr. Song'.
"Song, like River Song, the woman you met who knew who you were," Mickey remembered as he turned to Donna, who nodded.
"Yeah…yeah, that's her," Donna muttered.
"Donna, are you alright?" Wilf asked in concern as they noticed she was staring at the screen as if in a trance.
"Fine. Just…I'm fine," Donna said lowly.
While the others looked at Donna in confusion and concern, Jane gave Donna an understanding look. As Donna knew River's fate, it was obviously quite jarring for Donna to see River alive and well. Jane could certainly relate to that.
As The Doctor hooks up the Home Box to the TARDIS, he explains that someone is trying to get his attention 12,000 years in the past. On the scanner, he pulls up footage of River winking before she is confronted by the security.
"So that's why she let herself be caught on camera," Martha realized.
"And why she burned the Home Box. She knew he'd see it. She's good," Mickey said impressed.
Jack silently agreed, staring at the screen. His years as a Time Agent and then with Torchwood had given him an ability to read people. And right now, all his instincts were screaming at him that River Song was more than meets the eye.
The Doctor and Amy watch on the scanner as River addresses the man, Alistair, saying she had needed to see what was in his vault. "Do you all know what's down there? Any of you? Because I'll tell you one thing: this ship won't reach its destination," River declares.
"She seems pretty certain about that. What does she know that they don't?" Jack wondered suspiciously.
"It's not that they don't know. It's that their arrogant enough to think they can control it," Jane said vaguely, confusing the past viewers
Alistair tells his men to kill her and make it look like an execution. "7775/349x10,012/Acorn. Oh, and I could do with an air corridor," River says. The Doctor heads to the controls as he realizes River just gave them her coordinates, putting the TARDIS in drive. River tells Alistair he might want to hang onto something as an alarm goes off. Alistair and his men grab onto the walls of the ship as the airlock opens. River is sucked out into space as the TARDIS materializes not far from her. The Doctor rushes to the door, opening it as River collides with him. They fall onto the floor, River landing on top of him.
"As far as his rescues go, that was one The Doctor's less dramatic ones," Martha noted and Jane winced.
"Oh trust me, everything that came after was plenty dramatic Martha," Jane said darkly.
"In other words, you just jinxed it," Mickey quipped and Martha lightly slapped him on the shoulder.
The Doctor greets her as they hear the sound of the ship leaving. The Doctor and River rise to their feet as River tells him to follow it. The Doctor pursues the ship in the TARDIS as River tells him to use the blue stabilizers. The Doctor says the TARDIS doesn't have blue stabilizers and she points to the blue switches. The Doctor says they don't do anything and she flips them, activating the stabilizers.
"How does she know how to fly the TARDIS?" Martha asked surprised, this new information surprising even Donna.
"Spoilers," Jane said with a slight grin.
The Doctor declares it's boring now, calling the stabilizers 'blue boring-ers'.
"Oh Spaceman," Donna said, not sure whether to be annoyed or laugh at his antics.
"He's much more childish than the last version," Wilf noted.
"Even the psychic paper can't make him act like an adult," Jane said with a slight grin.
Amy asks how River can fly the TARDIS and The Doctor scoffs at River flying the TARDIS. As The Doctor sits down, River charts a course and declares she has parked them next to the ship. The Doctor or argues they haven't landed and River says she just land, to his disbelief. River explains it's not supposed to make its typical noise; The Doctor leaves the breaks on.
"And she apparently knows more about the TARDIS than The Doctor," Jack noted, beginning to grow suspicious. "Just who is she?"
"It's complicated. But for now, all you need to know is she's a friend," Jane said vaguely.
Silently, Donna remembered The Doctor's reaction to River's death and wondered if that was all River was. She'd been suspicious but, given how withdrawn he'd been following River's death, she'd never had the courage to ask The Doctor. But something told her she was about to find out either way.
The Doctor, trying to save face, says he likes the noise and tells Amy to come along. River reminds him of the environment checks. Instead, The Doctor opens the door, poking his head out. The Doctor easily determines that they're on Alfava Metraxis, seventh planet of the Dundra system. The Doctor points out there are no toxins in the atmosphere, easily determining that it has an 11 hour day with a chance of rain later. River grumbles to Amy that he 'thinks he's so hot when he does that'.
"Oh tell me about it. He loves to show off, doesn't he?" Martha said, rolling her eyes good naturedly.
"He thinks he's so cool when he does it," Donna laughed, remembering many a moment when The Doctor would try to impress her.
Amy asks River how she can fly the TARDIS. River explains she had lessons from the very best. "It's a shame you were busy that day," she told The Doctor cheekily, causing him to deflate.
"Oh I definitely like her," Martha said with a grin.
"Me to. She doesn't seem like she'll Boss get away with anything," Mickey said with a laugh.
"She reminds me a bit of your grandmother," Wilf told Donna with a slight chuckle, remembering his wife fondly.
"Yeah…yeah, I guess she does a little bit," Donna said lowly.
Jack was silent, watching the screen. Under normal circumstances, he'd probably like River. But there was just something off. It felt like River was hiding something.
As they head for the door, River wonders why they landed here. The Doctor reveals they didn't, the Home Box crashed, to her shock. River heads out and The Doctor closes the door behind her. Amy asks who River is and The Doctor says it's a 'long story and I don't know most of it'. He wants to take off and Amy accuses him of running away. The Doctor admits he is, as River is his future. Amy asks if he can run away from that and he says he can run away from anything he likes.
"The Doctor seems awfully eager to run away from her. He almost seems afraid," Jack noted.
"He has reason to be," Jane said vaguely.
"Why? Because she's his future?" Donna asked confused.
"No," Jane said, giving Donna pointed look and she understood after a moment.
"Oh," Donna said lowly as the others looked at her confused.
"Are we missing something?" Jack asked as they all looked back and forth between Donna and Jane.
Donna looked at Jane, who nodded. Donna sighed before looking at the others.
"When The Doctor and I met River…she died," Donna said in a low voice.
"Blimey," Mickey said lowly as the blood drained from everyone's face.
"I want you all to imagine something," Jane said as they all looked at her. "I want you to imagine knowing someone, Knowing that every moment you share with them, that each moment you start to trust them, to care about them just a bit more…that each one will bring that person closer to their death. And that you can't do anything to stop it. Can you imagine that kind of Hell?"
"Boss," Mickey muttered, feeling a range of emotions, from sadness at River's face to sympathy for The Doctor.
"So he couldn't even have this," Wilf said sadly, feeling his heart break for The Doctor.
"Oh Doctor," Martha said softly, tears welling in her eyes. "How much more does he have to lose?"
Jane silently thought of Manhattan and grimaced. A lot. Her father could still lose a lot.
"Yeah, I can imagine it," Jack said grimly, thinking of his wife, Ianto, Estelle, Angelo and his many other lovers through the centuries. "Quite a bit in fact."
Amy asks if it's a planet and The Doctor says it is. Amy points out The Doctor promised her a planet, begging for five minutes. Reluctantly, he agrees and Amy excitedly runs towards the doors. The Doctor says only five minutes, as River isn't dragging him into anything else.
"Five minutes never seems to be five minutes with Amy," Mickey noted.
"At this point, he should know better than to promise anything for five minutes," Donna said with a slight smile.
Outside, River, The Doctor and Amy stare at the crashed remains of the ship, which had landed on what appears to be ruins. Rivers asks what caused it to crash, knowing it wasn't her. The Doctor agrees, knowing the airlock would have sealed almost immediately after she was sucked out. The Home Box says the engines had a phase-shift and there were no survivors.
"So something went wrong in the engines then," Martha noted.
"Galaxy Class ship engines were top of the line. If something went wrong, it wasn't engine failure," Jack said certainly.
"Because it wasn't," Jane said darkly.
River notes it was sabotage and she had tried to warn them. The Doctor asks about what. River dodges the question, noting the building was empty, calling it an Aplan Temple that has been unoccupied for centuries.
"The Aplans. Never thought I'd be seeing their temple," Jack said in a bit of awe.
"What are the Aplans?" Wilf inquired.
"Greatest architects in the universe, or they were. They were wiped out under mysterious circumstances, no one has ever been able to figure out what happened," Jack explained, wondering if they would find out what happened now.
As River does something on her radio, Amy asks if The Doctor plans on introducing her. Reluctantly, The Doctor introduces the two, calling River 'Professor River Song'. River notes excitedly that she's going to be a professor one day and The Doctor cringes at his mistake. "Spoilers!" she quips.
"Rookie mistake Dad," Jane said with a chuckle as something clicked in Donna's mind.
"That's where I remember hearing Spoilers," Donna mused and Jane grinned.
"River's favorite catchphrase," she quipped.
"You met her?" Martha inquired and the smile left Jane's face.
"Once. A few years after I met dad, my ship was sucked through a vortex, crash landed in Luna University. River happened to be there, I told her who I was. Dad had told her about me and that's how I found him again," Jane said with a faraway look in her eyes. "I liked her."
"So did I," Donna said wistfully, thinking of her meeting with River, however brief it had been.
Amy asks who River is and how she knew what to leave at the museum. River notes that the two things that are always guaranteed to turn up at a museum are the Home Box and The Doctor. "It's how he keeps score," River notes.
"She really does know him," Mickey said with a grin.
"I'm more interested in how," Jack noted suspiciously.
"Long story. You'll find out in the second set," Jane promised and, although annoyed, Jack nodded.
Amy laughs; the two bonding as they make fun of The Doctor. Annoyed, The Doctor says he's not a taxi service and won't be there every time River wants to jump out of a space ship. River says he's wrong and The Doctor turns away in frustration. River then clarifies, saying there's one survivor. He turns back to her as she says one thing on that ship won't ever die.
"Well that's ominous," Donna said dryly as the past viewers looked interested.
"Like I said, dramatic," Jane noted.
River jokes about The Doctor listening to her now before putting her radio to her ear. She contacts someone, asking if they're in orbit and telling them to hone in on her signal. Turning around, River asks if The Doctor can 'sonic' her radio to boost the signal. Wearily, The Doctor pulls out his screwdriver and does so. Amy teased him about 'sonicing' River as clouds roll over the sky, blocking the sun.
"Cloud teleportation," Jack realized and Jane nodded.
"They teleport using the clouds?" Wilf asked in disbelief.
"Sort of. They use a device to manipulate the weather, the cloud belt is harnessed for teleportation," Jack explained.
River notes they have a minute, pulling out her diary. Going through it, she asks if they've done the bone meadows. Amy asks what is, trying to get look as The Doctor warns her to stay away. Amy asks what it is and The Doctor says her diary, River correcting that it was theirs. "Her past, my future," The Doctor said sourly. "Time travel, we keep meeting in the wrong order."
"Seems to be par for the course with him. Like with River," Mickey noted.
"And Elizabeth," Martha muttered sourly.
"You're going to have to let that go," Jack pointed out.
"When you have to run for your life, then you get a vote," Martha snapped, only amusing Jack.
Suddenly, four men in army gear materialize in four bursts of wind. One of the men approaches River, noting she promised him an army. River corrects him that she promised him the equivalent of an army, introducing The Doctor. The Doctor salutes the man as the man looks at him seemingly impressed.
"Boss is saluting someone. Never thought I'd see the day," Mickey said as everyone who had known The Doctor's previous incarnation was taken aback.
"Like I said, Rose's DNA seemed to magnify some of Dad's personality traits. One of them seemed to be a healthy weariness of military organizations like UNIT becoming distain for anyone carrying a gun," Jane explained. "But either way, he lost most of his distrust for military like figures after Regeneration."
"Well, it would explain quite a bit," Jack mused.
The man introduces himself as Father Octavian, a second class Bishop with twenty clerks at his command. As he explains the situation, Octavian notes The Doctor is eying the ship, the Byzantium wearily. He asks if River has explained what they're dealing with. River promptly asks what The Doctor knows of Weeping Angels and he looks at her sharply.
"Weeping Angels, of course," Martha groaned as Jack looked at the screen sharply.
"I thought they were just a myth," he said in disbelief.
"Nope. The Doctor and I encountered one just before we ran into you, it sent us back to the 60's. We had to rely on the help of a woman called Sally Sparrow to get back to the TARDIS," Martha explained.
"What is a Weeping Angel?" Wilf asked as he, Donna and Mickey looked confused.
"It's a statue…until you look away. If one looks at you, it can send you back in time, to anywhere of their choosing," Jack explained.
"They kill you…by making you live out your life, away from everyone you love," Martha added, horrifying the others.
"Blimey," Mickey muttered in horror.
"You have no idea,"' Jane said darkly, thinking of what the Weeping Angels had cost her father and the domino effort of where that had led.
That night, Octavian explains to The Doctor and Amy that the Angel was trapped inside the Byzantium as his men set up. Octavian explains the mission is to neutralize the Angel but they can't get too close. Showing The Doctor a blueprint of the temple's catacombs on a futuristic tablet, Octavian explains they plan to use explosives to blow through the cliff's base and make their way up.
"That is a terrible plan," Jack declared immediately.
"With no light? Even if the Angel doesn't outright kill them, it can send any of them back in time," Donna agreed.
"Well, I hope they have a plan for this, because otherwise this will be a massacre," Martha said darkly.
The Doctor sarcastically notes it's a brilliant idea with dark chambers. Octavian is called away by one of his men and The Doctor uses his screwdriver on Octavian's gear. Amy notes he never lets anyone call him sir until now. Amy asks about the Weeping Angel as The Doctor points out he told her to wait on the TARDIS.
"And you honestly expected her to listen Spaceman?" Donna asked amused.
"He should really learn by now we're not big on following blind orders," Martha agreed with a grin.
"He would know," Jack said with a laugh.
Amy mocks him about being 'Mr. Grumpyface' until The Doctor explains to her what a Weeping Angel is and breaks down exactly what is expected of him to do and impossibility of it. The Doctor asks if she any more questions and she asks if River is his wife.
"Please. Like the Boss would ever get married," Mickey chuckled.
"She's not his wife. Right?" Martha asked as she turned to Jane.
Jane's only response was to look at her with a pointed look and the truth washed over them all like cold water.
"No!" Donna said in disbelief.
"You're messing with us," Mickey said in disbelief and Jane smiled.
"Spoilers," she quipped.
"That's as good as saying yes," Martha said, still in a bit of disbelief.
"Oh Spaceman," Donna said as she realized something. "He knew, didn't he?"
"She knew his name. There's only one way he'd tell her his name," Jane explained and Donna thought back to The Doctor's reaction to River's death, viewing it with new eyes and her heart broke for him.
"So he knew from the state how his wife would die," Wilf noted, his heart breaking for The Doctor just like his granddaughter.
"You asked earlier what more could Dad lose Martha. The truth is quite a bit," Jane said as they all looked at the screen sadly.
Jack lost most of his suspicion about River at this new revelation. But still, he felt there was more River was hiding than just her marriage to The Doctor.
Am asks if River will be his wife one day and The Doctor admits she's right. "I am definitely Mr. Grumpyface today," The Doctor mutters. River calls out to The Doctor and Octavian, gesturing them to a drop ship. As they head inside, Amy asks why they call Octavian Father. The Doctor explains he's a bishop and the Church 'has moved on' in the 51st century.
"So this is what the Church becomes then," Mickey muttered.
"I'm hardly surprised. The Church has always perverted the teachings of the Lord to justify its crimes," Wilf said in disgust.
"You have no idea Wilf," Jack said darkly, thinking of Angelo and the many others who joined in killing him over and over again. "No idea."
In the drop ship, River shows them footage of the Weeping Angel, frozen with its hands covering its face. River explains its security footage she took from Alistair's ship, The Doctor agrees it's an angel and Octavian asks if he's encountered the Angels before. The Doctor explains once but it was long ago and they were scavengers. Amy notes it's a statue and River says it's only a statue when you see it. The Doctor asks where it had come from and River explains it's been in private hands for a century after being pulled from Razbahan ruins and has been dormant ever since. The Doctor disagrees, noting it was patient rather than dormant. Amy asks about the Angel and River explains it can only move if it's unseen. The Doctor explains it's a Quantum Lock; the Angels cease to exist when a living creature lays eyes on it, becoming stone which he calls the ultimate defense mechanism. Amy is skeptical that being stone is a defense. The Doctor points out its only stone until it you turn your back on it as the footage becomes static filled for a moment.
"It's what makes Weeping Angels such fearsome assassins. You're only safe so long as you keep looking at them," Jane noted.
The Doctor and Octavian head outside, The Doctor explaining that the hyper drive split open on impact, which will flood the area with drive burn, cracked electrons and gravity storms, which is deadly to almost everything living thing. Octavian asks if they're deadly to an Angel but The Doctor compares it to dinner, saying it will only make the Angel stronger.
"So you're going to make an Angel stronger and then go in to try and kill it. This can only end in disaster," Martha said dryly.
"You have no idea," Jane muttered grimly.
The Doctor asks if whoever built the temple is still around but River informs him that the Aplans died out 400 years ago. Octavian adds the planet was terraformed 200 years later and is currently occupied by six billion humans. The Doctor notes they're everywhere, like rabbits. "I'll never get done saving you," The Doctor noted.
"Oi Spaceman!" Donna snapped annoyed.
"I will try not to take that personally, knowing how often you do save us," Jack said dryly.
"Only he would compare us to rabbits," Martha said, torn between amusement and exasperation.
"He's Boss. What else is new?" Mickey asked with an amused grin.
Octavian asks if there is a clear and present danger to the human population. The Doctor says there is and to lock and load. As Octavian begins to do just that, River tells 'Sweetie' she needs him.
"Oh she is definitely his wife," Martha said with a grin. "Only his wife could talk to him that way."
As The Doctor heads after River, Amy, who had been forgotten, asks if anyone needs her and is greeted by silence. As she heads back inside the drop ship, she looks at the footage of the Angel, whose face is now uncovered.
"What the Bloody Hell?" Martha exclaimed in shock as they all looked at the screen sharply.
"Am I seeing things or did it just move?" Jack asked sharply.
"If you are, so are we," Wilf said uncomfortably.
"It's explained in a minute," Jane said grimly.
River gives The Doctor a book on the Angel, the only written work on them which was 'written by a madman' and barely readable. The Doctor reads the whole thing within seconds.
"Now you're just showing off," Martha told The Doctor in exasperation.
"Like he doesn't normally?" Jack asked with a slight grin.
Amy calls out to River, asking if she had more than one clip of the Angel. River says no and the confused Amy heads back inside the drop ship. The Doctor notes something is wrong with the book as, inside the drop ship, Amy sees the Angel has now turned around in the footage. Amy takes her eyes off the Angel to look at the counter. When she turns back, she jumps as she sees the Angel has moved closer to her. As she stared at it, Amy doesn't hear the sounds of the doors locking.
"Okay, we are clearly not seeing things," Martha muttered.
"Somehow, the Angel has come alive. But how?" Jack wondered.
"Wait for it," Jane said ominously.
Outside, River notes how strange it is to see The Doctor's 'baby face', asking how early it is for him. Very early The Doctor says as he examines the book. River realizes he doesn't know who she is yet. The Doctor asks how she knows who he is and she reveals she has pictures of all his faces, needing the 'spotters guide' as he doesn't show up in the right order. The Doctor realizes the book doesn't have any pictures.
"The pictures, that's it," Donna realized. "When you look away, the Angels come alive, even in pictures."
"Like the recording," Martha realized as they caught on.
"Even a picture can turn into an Angel?" Wilf asked in disbelief.
"Apparently so. Amy needs to get out of there," Jack said darkly.
"Except she can't. The Angels locked the door," Mickey realized.
Inside, Amy picks up the control for the television and tries to turn off the video. She fails as the footage turns right back on. Confused, she tries two more times with the same result. Putting the controller down, she moves closer to the video, muttering it's just a recording and can't move. Amy takes her eyes off the video to try and unplug the wires connecting the video. Failing, she looks up and jumps, seeing the Angel has now moved so close it fills up the video.
"Bloody Hell!" Mickey exclaimed as all but Jack, Jane and Martha jumped.
"Not sure my heart can take much more of this," Wilf said as he put a hand to his chest.
"We'll finish this one and the one after it up and then we'll stop for the day," Jane promised.
Realizing something is wrong, Amy calls out to The Doctor, moving towards the door and trying to open it only to find it locked. Looking back, she becomes terrified to see the Angel bearing its fangs at her, crying out for The Doctor once more.
"The Doctor really needs to get her out of there," Jack said as they all became worried about Amy.
The Doctor asks River why there are no pictures of Weeping Angels in the book and she remembers the book mentioned something about images. The Doctor flips through the book, quickly finding the passage. "That which holds the image of an Angel becomes itself an Angel," he read out loud.
"Finally, now get Amy out of there!" Martha snapped.
Inside the drop ship, Amy calls for The Doctor once more as she frantically tries to open the door. Outside, River and The Doctor ponder what this means as Amy finds the Angel is now standing in the room in holographic form.
"Use that big brain of yours and figure it out Spaceman!" Donna all but shouted at the screen, worried for Amy.
"He will, he always does," Jane promised.
Amy shouts that it's in the room and The Doctor realizes the meaning of the passage. He rushes towards the drop ship, asking her what happened. Amy says it's come out of the television and The Doctor tells her not to take her eyes off the Angel tries to use his screwdriver on the lock but it's deadlocked. Only River informs him the drop-ship doesn't have a deadlock.
"Well it does now," Jack said darkly.
"How can an Angel lock something without a deadlock?" Martha asked in disbelief.
"Nothing is impossible with Weeping Angels," Jane said grimly.
The Doctor pulls a bunch of wiring out of the siding, trying to cut the power to no avail. River argues again they don't have a deadlock but The Doctor says they do now. The Doctor asks if Amy can turn off the screen and she says she tried. He tells her to try again without taking her eyes off the Angel. As River uses her torch to burn a hole into the side of the drop ship, The Doctor tells Amy not to blink. Amy asks him if he's ever tried it as she picks up the remote again. Backing away from the Angel, she tries to turn it off but the image fizzles out before reappearing.
"So now even turning it off won't stop it," Martha said in disbelief.
"When it comes to Weeping Angels, all the normal rules and laws of physics get thrown out the window. They're one of the most dangerous threats Dad has ever dealt with," Jane asked darkly.
"What am I missing? Why do you seem to hate them so much?" Jack questioned, hearing the hate in her voice. "What did they do?"
"Doesn't matter right now. You'll see it eventually," Jane said with a shrug.
They all eyed her wearily. There was clearly something she was holding back, something to do with the Weeping Angels. But Jane was clearly her father's daughter, she'd tell when she felt they needed to know, not a moment before. So, reluctantly, they turned back to the screen.
The Doctor explains it's an Angel now to Amy's disbelief. The Doctor says it has taken the form of an Angel and thus is an Angel now. As he tries to find a way to turn off the power, The Doctor notices River using her torch and asks what she's doing. Trying to make a way in, she explains, but it wasn't even warm.
"That's not possible," Martha said in disbelief.
"Like I said, nothing is impossible when it comes to them," Jane said grimly.
"I will never look at statues the same way again," Wilf muttered.
"You and me both Wilf," Mickey said, already feeling the nightmares he was going to get.
The Doctor argues it's not physically possible as Amy asks what the Angel will do to her. The Doctor rushed back over to book as Amy repeats herself. The Doctor warns Amy not to look into the eyes, unaware Amy is staring into them right now. Amy asks why as River asks The Doctor what happened. "The eyes are not the windows of the soul, they are the doors. Beware what may enter there," The Doctor read.
"That's not ominous at all," Martha sarcastically.
"Would it kill whoever wrote it to be clear?" Donna complained.
"Like River said, it was written by a madman. Honestly, I think spending all that time looking into the Angels drove him mad," Jane mused.
The Doctor tells Amy not to look into the eyes and she asks what he said about images. River repeats what they learned and Amy realizes the video fizzles out every few seconds. Timing herself just right, Amy pauses the recording at the right moment, freezing it mid frame. The doors unlock and The Doctor and River rush in. The feed dies as Amy notes in relief that she froze it, explaining she froze it on the blip.
"Oh thank God," Martha said as they all breathed a sigh of relief.
"She's good. Very good. In another life, I might have recruited her for Torchwood," Jack mused.
"I think you would just had to mention Dad and she would have come with you in a heartbeat," Jane said with a laugh.
"Probably," Donna said as they all joined in.
The Doctor walks over to the plug on the TV, using the screwdriver to examine it as River and Amy note that Amy was amazing. He tells River to hug Amy and she asks why. "Because I'm busy," he says simply. Amy protests that she's fine and River adds she's brilliant as she hugs Amy. Amy notes she 'creamed it' as River asks if that was the Angel. The Doctor explains it was a merely a projection, reaching out to get a good look at them. It's no longer dormant, he noted.
"So now it's awake. Brilliant," Mickey said sarcastically. "What else could go wrong?"
"I told you not to say that!" Donna snapped.
"You told me not to say what else could go wrong, and I didn't," Mickey pointed out and she shot him an annoyed look.
"Just stop saying things like that!"
Hearing an explosion from outside, The Doctor rushes out of the drop ship to see Octavian and his men have detonated an explosive on the temple. Octavian informs him they're through. The Doctor notes it's started before walking out. River begins to follow after him as Amy rubs her eye. River asks if she's coming and Amy say she has something in her eye.
"She looked into the eye of an Angel and now has something in her eye. Somehow, I don't think the two are unconnected," Jack noted uneasily.
"Because they're not. Just…watch," Jane said with a heavy sigh.
Inside the temple, The Doctor, Amy, River, Octavian and his men have entered the chamber. Using torches, they look around as The Doctor asks for a gravity globe, which Octavian supplies for him. Amy asks where they are and River explains that it's a Aplan Moratorium, a maze of the dead. Amy is confused as The Doctor explains it's a perfect hiding place for a creature made of stone. Kicking the Gravity Globe into the air, it lights up, revealing various statues placed around the chamber.
"Great, more statues. That won't make finding the Angel harder or anything," Martha said sarcastically.
"Why are all those statues there?" Jack asked suspiciously. "Something's not adding up. The Aplans were architects, but I don't think they ever made statues."
"So how can there be statues there?" Donna inquired as they all got an uneasy feeling in their stomachs. "And don't you dare say just watch!"
Jane, who had been about to say just that, closed her mouth, fighting a grin. It was easy to see why her father had thought so highly of Donna. She didn't put up with any of his nonsense.
Octavian notes it will be more difficult that he thought and The Doctor agrees. Octavian notes finding the Angel among these statues will be harder than he thought, River calling it a needle in a haystack. A haystack of death filled with statues The Doctor adds. Octavian orders his men to check all the statues in the chamber and one of his men asks how they fight it. The Doctor tells them to find it and hope before walking off.
"That's helpful and not at all useless advice," Martha said dryly.
"I think sometimes he says stuff like that just to mess with us," Jack with a slight grin.
"Wouldn't surprise me," Mickey said with a chuckle.
Amy follows The Doctor. River moves to do the same when Octavian grabs her by the arm. He notes The Doctor doesn't know who and what River is and River says it's too early in his time stream. Octavian tells her not to let The Doctor work it out or he won't help them. River promises him she won't let him down, as she has no intention of going back to prison.
"I'm sorry, what? Did I hear that right?" Martha asked as they all looked at the screen in disbelief.
"If you heard River say she was in prison, then we both did," Jack said, his suspicion of River renewed.
"The Doctor married a convict?" Wilf said in disbelief.
"Well she wasn't one when I met her," Donna muttered, in a state of disbelief.
"River's life is a complicated story. But you can trust her. I promise on Dad's life," Jane promised.
"Let me guess, we need to see it for ourselves?" Mickey asked sarcastically.
"And you will. For now, just trust me," Jane said.
"Going an awful lot on faith here," Donna said dryly.
"And Dad did the same for each of you at one point," Jane pointed out and no one had a response.
"You're good," Martha said, torn between annoyance and being impressed.
Satisfied, Octavian lets her go and she follows The Doctor and Amy. He moves to follow after them when one of his men points to a side chamber. Octavian orders him to check it out, telling a man called Angelo to go with him. The Doctor and Amy are walking down a tunnel, Amy looking around in a bit of awe at all the statues. Feeling something in her eyes again, Amy rubs it, shocked when dust pours out from her eye.
"What the Bloody Hell?!" Martha exclaimed as they all stared at the screen in shock.
"There's an Angel in her head," Donna realized. "Beware of what may enter there."
"So they can even enter your mind if you look into their eyes. I think I preferred the 456. At least I knew what I was getting with them," Jack said darkly.
"These Angels are the things of nightmares," Wilf said unsettled.
"You have no idea Wilf," Jane said darkly.
River walks up next to her, not having seen and asks if Amy is alright. Amy lies, saying she's fine and asks what a maze of the dead is. River nonchalantly explains it's a labyrinth with dead people buries in its walls, to Amy's shock.
"And I thought the Labyrinth with the Minotaur was bad," Mickey muttered.
"It's not that uncommon. Many races throughout the universe do the same. I actually think earth did something similar at one point," Jack mused.
"Doesn't mean it's not bloody creepy," Donna muttered.
As Amy shoots her a look, River admits it actually is pretty bad. Rolling up Amy's sleeve, River pulls out a high tech syringe, promising that this won't hurt before injecting Amy with something. Amy let out a cry of pain and River says she lied without remorse.
"I really do like her. Just wish I knew what she's in prison for," Martha wondered, not sure about River.
"You'll find out," Jane promised, wondering how they'd take it.
River explains it's a viro-stabilizer, which will protect Amy from radiation. She'll need it when they get up to the Byzantium. Amy asks about The Doctor in the future and River vaguely says he's 'The Doctor' as she pulls Amy's sleeve back down. Amy sarcastically asks if she can write that down. River randomly says yes they are to The Doctor as he examines something on a device given to him by Octavian. He asks they're what and River clarifies they were talking about him. The Doctor claims he wasn't listening and River points out he's using the device the wrong way.
"Busted," Mickey chuckled as they laughed, the tension breaking momentarily.
"She knows all his tricks," Jack said in amusement.
"She even taught him some of hers," Jane said with a grin.
The Doctor awkwardly turns the device around to Amy and River's amusement. Amy declares River is The Doctor's wife and River asks if she believes something could be that simple with The Doctor. "Yep," Amy says confidently. River calls Amy good, although she won't admit she's right as she shines her Torch further into the chamber, looking at all the statues.
"It is kind of obvious when you know what to look for," Donna mused.
"Yeah, but how many of us would have expected The Doctor to settle down?" Jack asked dryly.
"I feel like the world's turned upside down," Martha muttered.
Angelo and the other man, Christian, are walking down the tunnel of the side chamber Octavian told them to investigate. Angelo complains about checking out the chamber and Christian notes they could be hunting into lava snakes. As he shines a torch towards a statue, Angelo notes the lave snakes weren't so bad. Using hand signals, Angelo tells Christian to hang back before heading into another passage. As Angelo waits, his light begins to go out.
"Oh Bloody Hell. This won't end well," Martha groaned.
"Octavian shouldn't have sent them off alone. That was a mistake. With creatures like this, it's best to go in teams of three or four," Jack mused.
"Tell that to Octavian," Donna said sarcastically.
He manages to keep it on when he hears what sounds like stones moving. Christian asks if there is anyone there. He receives no answer and worriedly calls out to Angelo. He turns away for a second and when he turns back, he's startled to see the Angel.
Everyone but Jack and Jane jumped, and even they did so barely. There was no doubt in anyone's mind what just happened to Christian.
"That poor man," Wilf summed up what they were all thinking.
"Who only died because of Octavian's arrogance and poor leadership," Jack said grimly.
"When it comes to Weeping Angels, I doubt they could have been saved even if Octavian had been the perfect leader," Jane said with a sigh.
In the other passage, Angelo, having heard Christian, responds. Christian's voice comes over the Comms, telling Angelo to come and see 'this'. Using his torch to look around, Angelo asks what it was and Christian's voice tells him to just 'come and see it'.
"So wait, now The Angels can take the voice of the people they kill?" Mickey asked in disbelief.
"Apparently," Martha said in a similar tone to her husband.
"These things are impossible," Donna said in a state of shock.
"Nothing is impossible," Jack said darkly.
Angelo, annoyed, tells him to just tell him but Angelo says he needs to come and see. Reluctantly, Angelo heads back up. He looks around with his torch, not finding Christian and immediately spots the Angel.
They all winced but no one made a comment.
The Doctor, Amy and River are still looking around when they hear the sound of gunfire. They immediately run towards the sound but it's only a soldier who had been firing at a statue. He apologizes, embarrassed as Octavian scolds him, reminding him that they know what the Angel looks like and that wasn't it.
"They're scared. And Octavian isn't helping," Mickey noted.
"He doesn't have the bedside manner to keep them calm in this kind of situation. That might get them killed," Jack said uneasily.
Octavian continues scolding him, telling him to remain calm as The Doctor asks his name. The soldier introduces himself as Bob. The Doctor compliments his name as Octavian reveals they are given sacred names at birth by the Church.
"Indoctrination," Wilf realized.
"Everything is chosen for them, names, profession, rank. Like you said Wilf, the Church has twisted Christianity to justify its atrocities for centuries. And it's even worse now," Jane said darkly.
The Doctor calls him sacred Bob before calling him Scared Bob. Bob admits he is scared and The Doctor says good. "Scared keeps you fast and anyone who isn't scared is a moron," The Doctor says before looking over at Octavian and telling him to carry on.
"Nice. He managed to reassure Bob and tell off Octavian at the same time. Only he could pull that off," Martha said impressed.
"If he wasn't so opposed to violence, Boss would have made a good general," Mickey noted.
Octavian says they'll head into the maze in two minutes before ordering Bob to guard the approach with Christian and Angelo.
"And now he's just gotten Bob killed to. Excellent leadership Octavian," Martha said sarcastically.
"In defense to Octavian, it's not like he knew they were dead. Like you said Jack, he was leaving a team of three. His mistake was in not doing that at the start. Their mistake was in not staying together," Jane said.
As The Doctor, Amy and River head into the maze, Amy asks if the maze could collapse under the Byzantium's weight. River assures her the Aplans were incredible builders and The Doctor notes he had dinner with their chief architect once, saying tow heads were better than one. Amy asks if he helped them and The Doctor clarifies they had two heads. The Doctor asks River what the end of the books said and she opens it up. The Doctor tells her to read it to him. "What if we had ideas that could think for themselves? What if one day our dreams no longer needed us? When these things occur and are held to be true, the time will be upon us. The time of Angels," River reads ominously.
"Both unhelpful and creepy," Donna muttered.
"Only if you don't read between the lines," Jack mused. "Based on what we've seen, I'd say he's right. The Angels have abilities that are beyond our ability to comprehend. Like Jane said, normal laws of physics don't apply to them. They're the phantoms of our world, haunting our dreams and making nightmares out of when we're awake."
"That's both deep and creepy," Martha noted and Jack shrugged. "You also might have a point."
"What does it say when a madman has more insight into these things than us?" Mickey muttered but no one had an answer.
By Christian and Angelo's bodies, their radios blare as Bob asks where they are, the shadow of an Angel seen.
Everyone tensed but no one said a word. By now, they knew what Bob's fate would be. They were just waiting on pins and needles now.
Amy asks if they're there yet as the groups move through the chambers. River patiently explains the temple has six levels and they have two more to go. The Doctor absently notes they should visit the Aplans sometime. Amy points out they're dead and The Doctor points out so is Virginia Woolf, yet he's on her bowling team.
"Of course he is. Because why not?" Martha asked dryly.
"At this point, it would be a surprise if The Doctor didn't know every famous, historical figure," Jack mused.
"Well he and I met Agatha Christie, so I guess it makes sense he knows Virginia Woolf to," Donna mused.
"You did?" Wilf asked in surprise and Donna smiled.
"I'll tell you about it later Gramps."
The Doctor rambles for a moment about the Aplans until River tells him there's something wrong, but she doesn't know what it is. The Doctor agrees, having picked up on it as well, assuring her he's working on it.
"These two are so in sync, even when he barely knows her," Martha said, not sure whether she was surprised or impressed.
"That's Dad and River for you. They're either working together or trying to kill each other," Jane said with a smile.
"That's marriage," Jack noted wistfully.
The Doctor rambles again about the Aplans, telling Amy about the church putting a stop to self-marriage. The group reaches the lowest level and Octavian warns them they're fifty feet from the wreckage.
"But The Angel's still out there," Martha said uneasily.
"Far away from them. But at least they're safe," Jack said, not noticing Jane's wince.
Amy jokes to The Doctor that the divorces must have been messy. The Doctor suddenly stops, letting out an 'oh'. Everyone stops as he shines a torch on one of the statues, which is faceless.
"I don't get it. What's with him?" Mickey asked clueless when all the blood seemed to drain from Jack's face.
"Oh," Jack said and they all turned to him. "Jane, tell me I'm wrong in what I'm thinking right now."
"Would you like the truth or a lie?" Jane asked and Jack hung his head hopelessly.
"I don't get it," Martha said.
"The Aplans have two heads. Yet the statues only have one. I think I know how the Aplans were wiped out," Jack said and, after a few moments, Donna and Martha's eyes widened in realization.
"They're not statues," Donna whispered.
"They're Angels," Martha said horrified.
"Blimey," Mickey whispered.
"Good Lord," Wilf said horrified.
"This wasn't a coincidence the Byzantium crashed here. The Angel brought them their on purpose, to wake them all up," Jack said darkly.
"A whole army of Weeping Angels. They'll be a menace on the universe," Martha said horrified, remembering her own experiences with them.
"Oh," River said, catching on. She and The Doctor exchange startled looks, River wondering how they hadn't noticed that. The Doctor says either there's a Perception Filter or they're thick.
"Really starting to hate Perception Filters," Donna said annoyed.
"Well, they're a popular device, so don't expect them to go away," Jane said and Donna groaned.
Octavian asks what's wrong and The Doctor orders no one to move. The Doctor apologizes to Octavian, saying he's made a mistake and now they're all in danger. Octavian asks what danger and River points out the Aplans had two heads. Octavian doesn't understand until The Doctor asks why the statues only have one. The Doctor orders everyone to one spot, behind him before ordering everyone to turn off their torches. After some hesitation, everyone but The Doctor turns off their torches. The Doctor says he'll turn off his only for a moment. River asks if he's sure and The Doctor says he's not before turning it off. When he turns it back on, all the statues have moved.
"It's true," Wilf said as they all stared in horror at the screen.
"How are they going to get out of there alive?" Martha asked, worried about all of them.
"Boss'll think of something," Mickey said certainly, although he wasn't sure if he was trying to convince her or himself.
"He better. For everyone's sake," Jack said grimly.
Everyone turns their torches back on as Amy is in shock that they've moved. The Doctor runs up to the Angels, shining a light in their faces as the others follow him. The Doctor declares they're all Angels and River says they can't be. The Doctor orders the Clerics to keep watching them. The Doctor leads them around a corner, where he sees more statues in new positions, noting every statue is a Weeping Angel. Bob is walking around the side chamber when he hears Angelo's voice come over the radio, telling him to come and see this. Bob asks where they are as they were supposed to be there five minutes ago. Angelo tells him to come through the arch.
"This is it. This is how he dies," Martha realized in horror.
"Oh Bob," Donna said sadly.
The others simply stared at the screen sadly, already mourning the man who needlessly lost his life against a monster.
Bob hesitates, asking what it is and Angelo tells him to come and see in a sharper voice. Bob hesitated before walking though the arch. He looks around before spotting the Angel. His torch goes out and there's a thud.
Everyone winced but, again, no one made a comment.
River says there was only one Angel on the ship and Amy asks if the Angels could have been here already. The Doctor asks how the Aplans were wiped out and River says no one knows. The Doctor says they do.
"The Angels sent the Aplans back in time, spread out across different eras of time. They could never find another one, so they died out," Martha realized.
"In a twisted sort of way, it's rather brilliant. Evil, sadistic, but brilliant," Donna said in disgust.
"That's the Angels for you," Jane said darkly.
Octavian said they don't look like Angels and Amy points out they weren't fast, as they should have had them by now. The Doctor notes they're dying from centuries of starvation, Amy adding that they're beginning to lose their image. And their image is their power The Doctor says. The Doctor then realizes the crash was no accident, it was a rescue mission and the radiation from the Byzantium is bringing the Angels back to life.
"So you were right Jack, it wasn't a coincident. It was a plan," Martha noted.
"Sometimes I hate being right," Jack said darkly.
River says they need to get out of their and Octavian radios Bob, Christian and Angelo. But only Bob answers. Octavian asks about Christian and Angelo, informing him about the statues. Bob tells him Angelo and Christian are dead, to his shock. The Doctor grabs Octavian's radio, asking where Bob is now, ignoring Octavian's protests. Bob says he's on his way up to them, tracing their signal. The Doctor asks how his friends died and Bob says by the Angels snapping their necks.
"And I bet you enjoyed it, didn't you?" Donna snarled angrily as they all looked horrified and disgusted.
"It's a Weeping Angel, so chances are high," Jane agreed grimly.
The Doctor notes the Angel usually displace you in time unless they needed you for something. Octavian asks if Bob checked for vital signs, hoping they can save Christian and Angelo. But The Doctor calls him an idiot, asking how Bob escaped. But he didn't, the Angel killed him to. The Doctor asks him to explain and Bob says they snapped his neck. The Doctor asks how he can be talking to Bob and 'Bob' explains the Angel stripped his cerebral cortex and reanimated his consciousness to communicate with them. The Doctor realizes it's not Bob, but the Angel that's coming and 'Bob' confirms this.
"Why would it tell him? Why not just wait to get there and join in on boxing them in?" Wilf asked in confusion.
"To make them afraid, to taunt them about the fact its picking them off one at a time? Either way, I don't think it matters, the end result is the same," Jane said grimly.
"They seem to enjoy making their victims afraid," Jack noted and Jane smiled humorlessly.
"They do. You have no idea how much," Jane said, once more thinking of Manhattan.
Octavian says they can get out through the wreckage and The Doctor agrees, ordering them all to go. The Doctor assures Amy he'll be behind them, staying behind with Octavian. The Doctor apologizes for calling him an idiot but they couldn't have saved his men. Octavian coolly promises to tell that to their families.
"Oi! Don't blame him, you shouldn't have sent them off alone!" Donna snapped angrily.
"He feels responsible, but he needs to stay focused," Jack noted, relating to Octavian for the first time. "Each death is like a blow to his conscience. Easier to blame The Doctor than himself."
Donna deflated as they all began to feel some sympathy for Octavian.
As Octavian walks off, The Doctor asks if he's speaking to the Angel from the wreckage. Bob's voice confirms he is, as the others are still restoring. Which means the Angel is not in the wreckage. The Doctor thanks him before running to catch up with the others. The Doctor passes Amy on his way out, telling her not to wait for him. But she says she can't move and he stops, turning around. She tells him to look at her hand and he does, seeing it had turned to stone.
"Wh-how…her hand is stone!" Mickey exclaimed as they all looked at the screen in disbelief.
"Not exactly," Jane said and they turned to her. "The Angel can't turn her to stone, but it can play mind games with her."
"Amy's hand isn't stone, she only thinks it is," Martha realized and Jane nodded.
"Great. The Angel picked a jolly good time to play games," Donna said sarcastically.
Octavian and the others have rushed ahead. They enter the chamber they first entered when they hearing creaking. Looking up, they see the Byzantium above. River notes it's at least thirty feet, asking how they get up there. Octavian orders all the exits secured.
"So they're surrounded by an army they can't see, Amy is being tricked by an Angel, and their only exit is hovering above them. This could not worse," Mickey groaned.
"And now it will. Thanks Mickey," Donna said sarcastically.
Shinning a light in Amy's eyes, The Doctor realizes she looked into an Angel's eyes. Amy apologizes, saying she tried not to. The Doctor assures her that her hand is not stone; the Angel is messing with her mind. Amy argues that her hand is stone, she can't move it. The Doctor says if it comes, the Angel will turn off the light and he can't stop it so he needs her to move her hand. But Amy can't, she's tried she says. The Doctor says they'll both die then. Amy argues he won't die and he says they'll cut the lights. Amy points out River and their future adventures prove he lives but time can be rewritten he argues.
"Would you stop arguing with her and get her out of their Spaceman!?" Donna snapped worriedly.
"He needs to find a way to break the Angel's hold on her mind," Jack said, although he wasn't sure how The Doctor was going to do that.
The lights dim and the Angels move closer. Amy turns her head and The Doctor tells her not to blink. Amy tells him to run and The Doctor says he won't leave her. Amy says she doesn't want him to die for her and The Doctor insists she can move her hand, the two arguing about whether or not it's stone. The light dim again and Amy tells him if he stays he'll as good as killed Octavian, River and the others.
"Well, The Doctor's officially found a companion that's even more stubborn than him," Jack sighed.
"Which would be funny under normal circumstances. Now I just hope it doesn't get them both killed," Mickey said uneasily.
The Doctor calls her magnificent before apologizing. Amy says she understands, thinking he's leaving her. But he clarifies he's not apologizing for leaving before biting her hand. She cries out in pain, realizing he was right as he tells her they have to run. Amy is in disbelief that he bit her as they run.
"That's…one way to break a trance," Jack said as they all stared at the screen in disbelief.
"Unorthodox, but it worked," Martha said, looking on the positive side.
"Now they just need to figure out how to get out of there," Donna muttered mostly to herself.
The Clerics are greeted by one of their own running up; informing them that the statues are advancing on them and his torches keeps flickering. All their torches do, Octavian notes and River adds the Gravity Globe is as well.
"Great, surrounded by an army of Angels and the lights are all about to go out," Donna groaned.
"It'll be a massacre. And I've seen enough of those for one lifetime," Jack said darkly, thinking of the 456 wiping out all the people in Thames House, including Ianto.
Octavian warns his men to prepare themselves as The Doctor and Amy arrive, The Doctor noticing the humming from the Byzantium. The Doctor realizes the Angels are draining the power from the ship. Octavian realizes they won't be able to see the Angels and The Doctor says they can't stay there. The lights flicker and when it comes back on, they see an Angel standing in the side entrance. River asks The Doctor if he has any ideas as Octavian notes that they don't have the equipment to reach the ship. River points out this is usually when The Doctor has a really good idea.
"Now's usually the part where he has an idea so crazy enough it actually works. They really need one of those right now," Martha said uneasily as they watched tense.
"Come on Spaceman, come up with something," Donna pleaded quietly.
The Doctor says there's always a way out, the lights flickering. When they come back on, the Angels have entered the chamber.
"Well he's running out of time. Whatever The Doctor is going to do, he needs to do it fast," Jack said grimly as they tensed.
"The Angels are boxing them in. Dad has his back against the wall. Which is usually when he does his best work," Jane pointed out.
"I hope this is no exception," Wilf muttered.
Bob's voice flares on the radio, asking to speak to The Doctor. The Doctor demands to know what the Angels want. 'Bob' says that the Angel will be with them shortly and want them to know something: Bob died in Doctor is confused as 'Bob' explains The Doctor had told him his fear would keep him alive, but he'd died afraid, in pain and alone. The Doctor made Bob trust him but he wasn't there when it mattered. Amy asks what the Angels are doing and River explains trying to make The Doctor angry.
"They really don't want to see Boss when he's angry," Mickey said and those who had seen The Doctor filled with rage shuttered at the image.
"Him being angry might be exactly what they need right now to get out of this alive," Martha noted.
"Let's hope so," Jack said as they all continued to watch.
'Bob' says the Angels wanted him to know that and The Doctor explains they have made their second mistake, because he will not let that pass. "I'm sorry you're dead Bob, but I swear to whatever is left of you, they will be sorrier," The Doctor vows. 'Bob' notes they're trapped and about to die. The Doctor agrees before declaring that this trap has a 'great big, whopping mistake'.
"And now's the part where he does something completely reckless that saves everyone," Donna said as the tension began to lift from the room.
"The usual," Martha said with a grin.
"Did you expect anything less?" Jane asked as she smiled.
"Not for a moment," Wilf promised.
The Doctor asks Amy and River if they trust him and they both answer yes. The Doctor asks Octavian if he and his men trust him. After looking uneasily at the Angels, Octavian says they have faith. The Doctor then tells Octavian to give him his gun.
"I was not expecting that," Jack said as the past viewers stared at the screen in disbelief.
"If he's using a gun willingly, he really must be desperate," Martha noted.
"Or its part of his crazy scheme," Donna noted and Martha nodded, conceding her point.
Octavian hands The Doctor his gun and The Doctor tells everyone he's about to 'do something incredibly dangerous and stupid' and to jump when he does. Octavian asks where and The Doctor says as high as they can on his signal. Octavian asks what signal and The Doctor assures he won't miss it as he aims the gun into the air. 'Bob' asks what mistake the Angels have made. "Didn't anyone ever tell you if you're smart, if you value your continued existence, if you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there's one thing you never, ever put in a trap," The Doctor says. 'Bob' asks what that would and The Doctor declares it's him. The Doctor then fires and the shot strikes the Gravity Globe, destroying it.
"Did he just…" Martha trailed off as they past viewers stared at the screen in utter bewilderment as it went black.
"Destroy the Gravity Globe? Yeah. Wonder what he's planning," Jack mused.
"Probably something so insane no one else would think of it," Donna noted and chuckles broke out across the room as they realized she was right.
"Well, you'll find out in just a moment. We'll finish up this little adventure, then we'll pick up tomorrow," "Jane said.
"Sounds good to me," Mickey said as they all realized how tired they were.
And at last, we're done with that one. River made the episode and, given context, River and Amy's interaction are pretty hilarious.
I do think it's in character for Jack to be a bit suspicious of River at first, given the limited information he's getting at the moment.
