It took a while until Leilani actually grew more comfortable around the Arcobalenos. It didn't change though that she still skipped the majority of the meetings, at this point completely relying on Colonnello to inform her whenever one was planned and only going if she was already close to it. She loved how mobile she still was and so far she had never laid low in one place for too long, old habits died hard after all.
She didn't always prank the arcobalenos, sometimes she was even nice. To the meeting a few months ago she had even brought some cookies. Okay, sure she hadn't liked the recipe after trying it out and had used it as a chance to get rid of them but the thought counted, right?
It wasn't the same as they were before the curse, she didn't even think she could manage to be like that again in their presence or if she wanted to. Still, the distrust got smaller over the years. It didn't mean that she would leave her life in their hands or anything but… she didn't have the need to run away as soon as she saw them. It wasn't fully okay but… it was the best she could offer.
Sometimes they didn't see her for a year, sometimes she came to 3 consecutive meetings and she still hadn't given them her number. The creditcard Reborn had given her was collecting dust in a corner but she couldn't really throw it away or give it back. in a way it had been her symbol for her having gotten a third chance at life. Her first had been Hogwarts, the second the circus and the Carcassa had been her third. She was grateful for it but it never changed that Reborn was a prat and she liked pranking him too much to ever consider anything else.
The meetings between the arcobaleno had long strayed from discussing curse related matters. No one ever had found much about it in the end and so they avoided it to not get reminded of what this meant. Funnily enough though, most of the time their meetings turned into gamenights.
Leilani lost most of the time actually. How could anyone even consider beating viper in monopoly or Reborn in poker? Fon was a monster at Jenga. Verde excelled at Trivia. Colonnello at Guess who? and Lal won every single round of Uno.
Leilani herself only had a chance whenever it came to luck and even then it was switching rapidly. Sometimes she started out as the frontrunner only to lose everything a second later and vice versa.
This time they tried something else though, because of Reborns department to Japan to train the new Vongola heir they had wanted to play something that he would like, not that Poker was something anyone would ever want to do again so they chose something else.
Three truths one lie was their activity for the evening. With just two truths it had been too easy. Verde had relied on statistics, Viper usually already knew the answer and Reborn had a way too easy time figuring them out.
Honestly because of Reborn the whole game got more complicated. They all had to write their answers for the round down, a random other Arcobaleno -never Reborn- was made to read the statements in random order and for the whole time Reborn was forbidden from looking at anyone.
Reborn raised an eyebrow at her "Really lackey? It's no secret that Colonnello is your favourite person in this world, that you're weak to illusions, that you like treacle tart and what your last meal was isn't a good lie either. Do you even try to put in effort?"
She pouted "Well excuse me Senpai, not everyone has a hundred thousand bed stories that are too weird to be true."
"They are true."
"Sure, sure but again not everyone wants to pull out their weirdass stories like that."
"As if you even have any."
She wrinkled her nose and huffed out "if I ever start you would fall from your chair."
Lal sighed "I saw a Kindergarten on my way here, should we bring you two there or are you done?"
Colonnello laughed as he patted Skull on the head "Don't worry. You might not be much of a challenge in this game but who could even beat Reborn in this? He won almost every round."
Leilani still didn't stop her pout but leaned back "That he did.."
One could call her impulsive but as the game picked up again she was thinking hard. She wanted to prove them wrong. Shock them once over and completely trash Reborn.
The idea came creeping up and honestly…. would it really be that bad? There was no way in hell that they would guess it. It was perfect but…
She tilted her head, just lifting her hand whenever Colonnello did as her thoughts were racing. It was just the arcobalenos… they wouldn't run around with the information and… wasn't she strong enough at this point?
Hadn't that been the sole reason for her keeping her secrets? That she didn't want to get caged or anything similar? But now? She could use her magic freely. She knew how to cast her spells, even had started to use magic she hadn't known before.
No one was able to corner her anymore and even if they did she always got away. She could do it right? Just to wash that smug smirk of Reborns face. She could win against all of them. eat them at their own game completely. There wouldn't be anyone that could top that.
She really wanted to… so what was stopping her?
In a way this was the moment when Leilani realised that she really needed Hermione in her life to stop her from her intrusive thoughts but the muggleborn witch wasn't here and so no one stopped Leilani when she focused on Reborn.
"Senpai, I want to propose a bet."
The hitman raised an eyebrow in mild interest "About what?"
"My next round. If any of you guess correctly you win. I don't care if you discuss or vote all separately. But if no one guesses it I win."
"That's the easiest bet I will have ever won. What do you wager?"
"If I lose you get my phone number. For a whole year I will come to every arcobaleno meeting. I won't prank any of you. I will behave and I will come whenever you call and I will tell you my name." she didn't falter even as his smirk grew wider "But… if you lose you have to stop calling me Lackey and no one is allowed to follow or run after me, no matter what I do or where I go. Even if I don't appear at any arcobaleno meetings you are not able to complain and the same goes for whatever prank I pull on you. No retaliation is allowed."
"2 years? While the other only counts for one?"
Leilani shrugged "You're scared of losing? I thought you wanted all of that."
"I won't lose." he immediately shot back.
She only grinned as an answer, mischief twinkling in her eyes."Then why are you so afraid to agree?"
The hitman mustered her for a second but she could clearly see how he didn't even consider losing "Alright."
"I want your hand, senpai." she extended her own and with a smirk the hitman accepted it.
Skull couldn't contain her grin at his certainty, even Viper had leaned forward in interest. The miser would finally be able to find her and even collect information on her if they won but honestly? There was no way Leilani could lose this. Still, she pulled on her helmet, just to be on the safe side.
While she theorised that even without the helmet they would still not get it correctly she really didn't want to risk it. What would be the point if they would win this bet? She would have admitted some of her secrets and would have to check in with them.
Maybe she shouldn't have given them such a wager but… she had to make it tempting and honestly? Why would she lose?
Even Colonnello had no clue, which maybe was a mistake on her side… but it's not like anyone ever asked. She had never stated it herself… at least not really.
Honestly she had been obvious, from the first time they met. It wasn't her fault and it would be a form of payback. They had trusted Checkerface with this after all. They had believed him without doubting and she just never corrected Checkerface. It was honestly the same thing they did, knowing that a lie was uttered but keeping the secret. Just that her secrets had no impact on them.
She didn't start the end of the world with it or robbed them of anything. They could have noticed at any point in their lives, they just didn't. It was their own fault.
And to be honest? If they truly are the best they should have figured it out by themselves. Truly their own fault.
Leilani didn't falter any longer, instead scribbling down her four statements and handing the list to Verde.
