Secrets Chapter7
"Honey, I'm home" Rory said laughing as she came through the door of their apartment. This is something they started doing when their cable company added Vintage TV to their cable package. Whoever got home last called it out when they came through the door.
"In the kitchen," He yelled back.
She dropped her bag and keys in the foyer. Logan could hear the 'click click' of her heels. He was bracing himself. She was going to go ballistic.
"Hey!" She said as she rounded the corner. "Whatcha cook….?" That's all she got out of her mouth before spotting Mitchum sitting at the bar with a drink in his hand.
"Rory," Mitchum said. "Glad your home." He stood up, handing her a martini.
She stopped in her tracks, with her mouth open, looking between Logan and Mitchum.
"Ace," Logan said, wiping his hands on a tea towel. He walked to where she was standing and kissed her cheek. She turned to look at him. "Why don't you go get changed into something comfortable, while I put the chicken in the oven. When you return, we will all sit down and I will explain."
Rory didn't move. She could not fathom what Mitchum was doing in their apartment. She didn't want to go change. She wanted to know now so she could start damage control. An encounter with Mitchum was bad on so many levels. First and foremost, she was worried about Logan. She knew he must have already taken the blunt of Mitchum's anger. Second, she needed to know who else knows so she can start making phone calls.
Logan took her by the hand, leading her out of the kitchen toward the stairs. "I'm okay. It's not bad. I promise." He told her. "Go on. We will be waiting."
When Logan entered the kitchen to finish preparing the chicken for the oven, Mitchum was still sitting at the bar. "Is she going to be okay?" he asked.
"Yeah," Logan sighed. "You being here is wrong in so many ways….As I told you earlier, we have our reasons for keeping this quiet, but as you also pointed out, this had to come to light soon."
"Well, I have called Philip at the estate in Germany. You will need to get with him about a schedule. He will fly the ring over or you can go get it. Like I said, the both of you should be prepared for the fall out when the ring is on her finger." Mitchum warned. Logan groaned. Why couldn't this be easy? Why is everything worth doing so hard?
Logan washed his hand before picking up his scotch. "Let's go have a seat in the living room." Logan said. Mithcum followed.
It wasn't long before Rory descended down the stairs. She was dress casual. She had on a pair of black leggings and a brown and orange tunic sweater. Logan couldn't help but laugh. She was wearing her bunny slippers.
Logan stood when he saw her coming, giving her a kiss and handing her drink to her. She smiled back at him. It didn't matter how bad a day she had, she could always count on Logan to make it better. "I realize I started asking this question earlier, but didn't finish. "What are you cooking?" She asked as she sat down on the sofa next to Logan, pulling her feet and legs under her.
"Million Dollar Chicken Casserole, Rice, Salad. I Stopped by Tommy's on the way home and got an apple pie for dessert." Logan told her.
Her eyes widened, "Ice cream too?" she asked, bouncing on her legs.
He laughed. "Yes, I picked up Ice cream too." Logan loved how excited she gets over the smallest things. No one could say she was in this relationship for the money.
The two of them were smiling and carrying on like they were alone. They did that sometimes. They would forget anyone else was in the room. They would get lost in themselves, but not tonight. They both were well aware of who else was in the room.
Mitchum cleared his throat. "Well," He said. They both took a sip of their drinks and turned their attention to him. "I showed this to Logan as soon as I got my hands on it." Mitchum handed Rory the folder that had been laying on the table. "I think I have bought them all. I hope I have, but I can not be sure. The two of you need to decide how to proceed." Logan and Rory were looking through the pictures in the folder.
"Ace, I explained to Dad our reason for keeping this a secret. He agreed it was a good idea…." Logan said, but was interrupted by Mithcum.
"It would have been nice to let me in on your secret, I could have prevented this from happening." MItchum said.
Rory scoffed. "I don't think so. Although I am sure my grandparents will be thrilled after the initial anger and shock, our mothers will do anything to keep this from happening. Neither of them liked the idea when we were in college. As far as you…." Rory continued. "I have no reason to believe you would be in our corner. You have never been before."
"Yes, I can see your point, but Rory, I have never had a problem with you and Logan dating. Hell I know you are the reason he straightened up enough to graduate. I credit you for his growth while in California. I believe he did so well out there because you turned him down and he thought he had something to prove….. To you."
Rory was silent. She and Logan talked about it when they first got back together. He told her she was the reason. She tried to tell him that he did this all on his own.
"Dad thinks we need a plan to start the process of letting our families know." Logan told her. Logan had agreed to this arrangement in the beginning. He believes it was best at the time, but now they were a solid couple. He also thought it was time.
The three of them begin to discuss a plan.
