Leilani was turning around to thank Tsuna for his work when her eyes fell on Checkerface. The man who was still there, standing almost lost looking in a corner.
"Checkerface!" She called out. Dodging Reborns hand as soon as she stepped towards him "Checkerface. I have a question."
He looked up, she could feel his eyes on her.
She planted her feet firmly on the ground a few meters away from him "Are you the reason why I am here?"
The man sighed "Don't you already know the answer?"
"I want to hear it from you. I want you to say it."
"Yes, Skull. I was the one who made you come here."
She wanted to close her eyes, she wanted to shake her head and tell him that he was lying but she knew she couldn't. She had always considered the possibility but hearing it… hearing it was different. it hadn't been a freak accident from her magic.
"Why?"
"You know as well as I what your ability means. You are the reason why the arcobalenos were able to hold on for so long. They wouldn't have been able to sustain it. Especially not the skies. Neither Luce, nor Aria nor Yuni. Their blood has been watered down too much. They couldn't hold the curse. they would have died in a matter of years. I needed someone who could support every flame."
He stepped forwards "Honestly? I planned to use you for another generation. Your prolonged lifespan together with the gift you had? You would have lasted."
"This means you could have used anyone?"
"Yes, everyone with your gift."
"Why me? Why out of everyone me? You could have gotten more experienced ones. With more power and knowledge? Older ones? Wiser ones?"
He shook his head "I've had a scroll. It described the way to go. Saphira made it a long time ago. She wasn't one of you but… she had knowledge, enough knowledge to use and craft it. For the case that this happened."
"But why me? Why me out of everyone?"
"I don't know. It only spoke of the chosen one."
Her breath stilled, she froze completely. This title? The one she hadn't heard in 36 years? This goddamn title that had robbed her of so many things? Her parents? Her family? Her childhood? And even now her world? Her home?
This title still after all these years hadn't had enough? It took more? it took everything from her?
She could only laugh, it sounded foreign in her ears, cold and harsh "The chosen one? Really? The chosen one?"
"I have no clue what it meant. I figured the chosen one for the curse. The one that could sustain it the best."
"You're wrong. You're so goddamn wrong!" she borrowed her hands in her hair, ignoring the constant trembling. "Do you have any clue what you did? What you caused with that? What you cause with using me for this?"
She was almost painfully pulling on her hair, the frustration and unbelief in her rising "You didn't get your chosen one. You didn't get the chosen one who could save this! You didn't!
You got their chosen one! You got the chosen one that was meant to do something completely different! I had that title! It was mine for years! I had that title since I was one!
I'm not your chosen one, Checkerface. I never was! I was theirs and you robbed me of them!
Do you have any clue what you did? What you caused? How many people relied on me? What I was doing?
You say you wanted to save this earth. You wanted to sustain it but what you did? This is worse than this goddamn curse! You doomed thousands! Thousands!"
She breathed heavily, her own voice ringing in her head "Do you know where I was? What I was doing before you pulled me here?
I was standing in front of the man, no, the monster that killed my parents. That killed hundreds. The monster that just resurrected himself using my own blood!
You took my chance away to warn everyone! To tell them what was going on! To let them get to safety! You! You, Checkerface are at fault for every last death, every last injury that got caused because you took me away. You took my chance away to bring back the body of my classmate! You took away my chance to save even one person. You took my chance away to save them. To make it right."
Her tears were already dripping down again, she could barely see and her voice was raw from screaming at him, it hurt but she still pushed further. Screaming her frustration at him to make air. She was suffocating, strangled by the knowledge of what this meant. The one thing she had tried so badly to push aside and not think about it. She had tried to bury it in her mind for years but now? Now it exploded. Her mind circled around everything she knew about and what this meant. What her disappearance had caused.
"You know he had followers. Loyal followers that did anything he wanted and they weren't the nice kind. Do you know how brutal they were? The mafia is nothing against them! For fucks sake even the Varia doesn't kill like that!
And they roamed free! Even if they only ran around undisturbed for one day and were able to do it for a few more hours. The amount of people they have hurt. All of this is your fault!
I could have stopped it! I could have stopped them! My friends could have died! They could have been tortured! The whole ministry or school could have been wiped out! My friends were targets! They are probably dead! All of them and I have no way of knowing!"
She felt so much pressure in her, her magic striking through her limbs, barely containing itself. Her mind switched between everything she knew about death eaters, the true horror she had read about. The terror they caused.
"I've read about them. I saw what they did! I was there when they attacked before!"
She rubbed over her face, trying to get her tears to stop, the horror that was terrorizing her mind as she finally let it happen. As the thoughts, her worries, her fears finally were able to attack her and pull her with them. She saw their faces, their information, their wanted signs, their trials.
"Do you understand the extent? Who you let roam free? Who you let people murder? Murder and torture! For no fucking reason than their sick pleasure and racism! Their fucking bloddpurist views!
They were infamous! Infamous for how they tortured. Antonin Dolohow was famous for his torture! That man is loyal to the boot, licking the dirt off his master's feet! Do you know what he was known for? Purple fire! His fucking purple fire! Torture so bad that there was no gaurantee that anyone would survive it! He was infamous for it! You let this man roam free to follow his master!"
Her thoughts were twirling, over and over, she saw faces, curses, todesser. Everything was muddled and screaming inside of her.
"I cursed Luce for giving me hope and destroying it. I cursed her for doing this to me. Do one fucking thing in your life and make it right. Send me back!"
The whole clearing was silent, no one spoke, almost frozen as they looked at the spectacle in front of them. At the tiny sky that was screaming her throat raw, tears flowing over.
Checkerface opened his mouth, clapping it open several times, not sure what he could say only to finally manage to stammer it out "I can't. There is no way. She didn't leave anything for this. I don't even have the scroll anymore. I can't help you."
Leilanis eyes closed in grief, in pain almost seeing to sink together in herself before she opened them again a new emotion flickering in them hate. Pure hate and determination. "Well then I think it's only fair that you yourself experience what you deemed my People to. May Fate decide if you shall live or die."
A thin string of purple flames shot towards Checkerface, too fast to even dodge. It seemed almost laughable, unimpressive and far away from anything anyone would have expected from a raging cloud.
Leilani had already turned around, running off the hill when Checkerface collapsed in himself. His whole body convulsing and the screams that filled the air on an animalistic level. Nothing anyone ever had heard from any human before.
The whole hilltop was still frozen, no one moved, no one stopped the tiny girl as she ran away and no one stepped forward to help the dying man. Just staring at him as he was dying under hellish torture that no one could see. No blood, no visible liaisons, no nothing but still Checkerface was in more pain that anyone here even knew how to achieve.
They watched as he took his last breath as he died in front of their eyes. They saw how Skull took her first kill in this world. Even if they couldn't comprehend how it happened or what she did.
They were all frozen at the sight of what Skull could do of what she had done and still no one moved not until the arcobalenos felt the flames that had burned in them flicker and to their horror realized how their hand started to shrink slightly, pulling them out of the shock..
Reborn, his fedora deep in his face was the first one who managed to speak "We have to find her."
