Secrets Chapter 11
It took exactly 39 minutes from the time Rory ended the call with Logan til she pulled up at the Emergency Department at St. Francis. When she pulled into the parking lot, all she could think about was following the signs to the Emergency Department. She was looking for a parking spot close by when she saw Finn. He and Colin were waving her down at the door of the ED.
When she pulled up, Finn opened her door while Colin opened Lorelai. "Love," Finn said. "We will park your jeep. Emily was in the ED waiting room when we got here."
Rory jumped out of the jeep, then had to yell at Lorelai to get out. Colin was helping her out, when he pointed to the doors for Rory to enter. "Turn left and follow the red line on the floor." He said.
"Thanks guys," Rory said as she grabbed Lorelai's hand and led her through the doors.
45 minutes. That is the time it took Logan to get from the Hartford Country Club to St. Francis. Finn and Colin were again waiting for him to park his car. He jumped out. "Thanks guys." he said as he headed toward the ED door. He was glad Finn and Colin just happened to be in town visiting family.
When he got to the ED, he did not see Rory or any of the family. He asked at the desk and was told the Gilmore family was in the waiting room on the 5 th floor. CCU. She pointed out the elevator and he took off.
When Rory and Lorelai got to the ED waiting room, Emily was sitting in the hard plastic chairs with a tissue in her hand, twisting it. She didn't see them enter the room.
"Grandma," Rory said. Emily turned to see Rory and Lorelai. She stood up, grabbed them both for a tight hug and she started crying.
"Grandma, What are they telling you? Where is he? Is he still alive?" Rory asked.
Emily turned toward Rory. "He was alive when the ambulance brought him in. They have not told me anything. I tried to get the nurse to talk to me, but she didn't know anything." Emily said. Rory turned to look at the nurses station. There was a blond woman in her mid 30's answering the phone. Rory started toward her, when a doctor in scrubs came out the door.
"Gilmore family?" He said.
"Yes," Rory said, raising her hand. She was closest to him. "I am his granddaughter, that is my mother and my grandmother." Rory pointing back toward them.
She followed him to the waiting room. "Hey, I am Dr. Holley." That was all he got out before Emily started asking questions.
"Grandma," Rory said gently. "Let him tell us what is going on, then we can ask questions." She said looking at Dr. Holley for confirmation.
"Yes," Dr. Holley said. "I am the ED doctor that treated Mr. Gilmore when he first came in. His cardiologist, Dr. Busby came in before I could complete my exam. Dr. Busby was in the hospital and heard the call out on the radio. We believe Mr. Gilmore's heart is not functioning at full capacity. He has what we call an EF. Low ejection fraction. It is when the heart is not pumping enough blood into the bloodstream. This puts him at a high risk of developing dangerous arrhythmia or even heart failure"
Emily gasped. Rory took her hand. Dr. Holley continued. "Dr. Busby escorted Mr. Gilmore to the 5th floor surgery CCU. There is a waiting room up there. I will take you up there. Dr. Busby will be out in a minute to talk to you about Mr. Gilmore's condition."
Rory took Emily's hand and they followed Dr. Holley to the elevator. When they got on, Lorelai spoke for the first time since they got to the hospital. "Can we see him?" she asked.
Rory was texting Paris, but she stopped to look up to see Dr. Holley's answer. "Dr. Busby will talk to you about that. I am not sure how soon they will take him to surgery."
Emily started to ask what type of surgery, but was cut off by the doors opening. Dr. Busby was at the nurses station waiting.
"Emily," He said as they stepped off the elevator. "Dr. Holley, thank you, I'll take it from here."
Dr. Busby, an older gentleman, older than Emily, but younger than Richard, took Emily's hand and led her to the waiting room. Rory was trying to keep up. She wanted to hear what he was saying.
When they were all seated he began to explain about putting an ICD in. He explained it was a type of pacemaker to help Richard's heart stay in rhythm. He told them he would be in the OR while the Dr. Whitaker, the cardiac surgeon, put the pacemaker in. The operation would take about 2 or 3 hours, then he will be in recovery. When he had answered all the questions they asked, he excused himself to take care of Richard.
The three Gilmore Girls sat in the CCU surgical waiting room in dead silence. No one spoke. They were the only ones there. Rory saw a coffee pot on the other side of the room next to where they entered the room.
She stood up. "I'll get us some coffee." She said, "Grandma, I can get you some tea if you prefer."
"No, Coffee will be fine." She told her.
She was filling up the paper cups with coffee, when she heard someone come in the door. When she saw who it was, she put the coffee cups down and ran to him. She fell apart in his arms. She had been so strong for her grandma and mom, but now, she could fall apart because she had someone to catch her.
Lorelai watched in disgust. She knew it was Logan. Emily was smiling, "It's Logan Huntzburger. That is who she has been seeing. Why wouldn't she tell us?" Emily asked.
Lorelai sat quietly, fuming as he held her daughter while she cried.
