So, I'm going to be doing two updates a week again until the story is over. So here is your second update of the week.
TW: Yes.
Jane silently led them back to the dining room. This time, there was no assortment of food waiting for them. But that was fine; none of them felt much like eating anyway.
They all sat down around the table and the room was silent for a long moment, each of them caught up in their own thoughts.
"It was Amy and Rory. The loss that he couldn't overcome was Amy and Rory," Martha muttered in realization and Jane nodded.
"Yeah, yeah it was," Jane confirmed.
"Losing them really hurt him that much," Donna almost whispered, her heart breaking for The Doctor.
"Yes…and no," Jane said and Donna shot her a quizzical look as the others were confused. "That is, I don't think it was just Amy and Rory. I think it was a lot of things: everything he went through during the Time War, wiping out his own race, Brigadier, Sarah-Jane, knowing his time with River was running out, losing you Donna, probably a bunch of other things to. Dad had faced one tragedy, one loss after another for over a thousand years and he always went on with a smile and quip but after Amy and Rory…he just couldn't do it anymore. Which left him vulnerable to the Siren."
"Boss…" Mickey said softly as they all took a moment to process this.
"Can I ask you a question?" Jack asked and she looked at him knowingly.
"You want to know why I didn't just go back and try to prevent what happened to Amy and Rory myself," Jane said and he nodded. "In truth, I wasn't sure I could prevent it myself. It was a fixed point once Rory saw his grave. The only way I could prevent that was by destroying the Weeping Angel in that graveyard, which might cause another Paradox. I couldn't go to Dad myself because I didn't think he'd believe me, so that left me with no other option but to go to all of you."
"If it's a fixed point, doesn't that mean we'll be destroying the universe like River did when she refused to kill The Doctor?" Wilf asked uncertainly.
"Big difference Wilf. River changed a fixed point at the moment it was happening. What I'm trying to do is make sure that fixed point will have never happened in the first place, making sure Amy and Rory are never in that graveyard. If all else fails, when you go back, make sure Amy and Rory don't continue traveling with Dad. I don't care how you do it, just make sure they're never in New York," Jane almost pleaded.
It was quiet for a moment as the past viewers exchanged uneasy looks, realizing the daunting task she was asking of them. But it was for The Doctor. And ultimately, the entire universe.
"We'll do our best," Martha promised and Jane seemed eased by this.
"Your best is good enough," Jane said seeming content with that answer.
"So, we're going to start seeing how the Siren manipulated The Doctor now?" Jack asked and Jane nodded with a grimace.
"Yeah, it starts in the next recording," Jane said with a sigh. "None of this is going to be easy for you to see, I'm sorry. But I need your help to save my dad and the universe."
"Hey, we're still here aren't we?" Mickey pointed out.
"We're all in. We're not going home until we finish this," Jack said firmly and Jane nodded gratefully.
"Good. Thank you," Jane said before glancing down at the table. "Anyone hungry?"
Surprised, the past viewers looked down, seeing that food had finally appeared on the table.
"I guess the TARDIS wanted to make sure we talked before she made sure we had anything to eat," Jane said with a slight grin.
They all laughed, the tension broken momentarily before they began to fill their plates, realizing how hungry they were. They really did need this break after what they had just seen. But once it was over, it would be time to continue watching the recordings.
Not entirely proud of this chapter but I hope you enjoyed it anyway.
