Human after all

Prologue: Don't leave me

"Daddy, where are we going?" the young child looked around himself as he held his father's hand. "Where is mommy?" He asked as he looked up at his father who had been silent all the way to the train station.

"Your mother is gone, Shinji," he answered with a cold voice. "You will be living with your uncle and aunt until you are needed."

The young boy's lips shook with what he heard. He didn't want his daddy to leave him. Was he at fault that mommy left?

"No! Daddy, I'm sorry! I didn't want mommy to leave! I'll be a good boy and listen to you! Please don't leave me, daddy!" The boy took hold of his father's hand and shook it as much as his little arms could.

The man remained steel-faced. "I've made my decision, Shinji. You will be living with your uncle." He stopped walking and let go of the boy, luggage at his side. His son looked up at him with tears in his eyes. "You will stay here and wait for your uncle to pick you up; did you understand me?" The boy only whimpered to his voice, soon enough he would start crying again.

Shinji started to cry and beg for his father to come back to him, and not leave him as his mother did, but the only answer he got was his father's cold shoulders. He cried and cried, but to no avail, his father was gone and it was all his fault.

As for Gendo, despite all the coldness towards his son, his heart hurt for him. He knew that he couldn't handle Shinji, nor could he provide the same care Yui did. If he did take care of him, he would only bring his son pain. This was for his best.

'Dear, take care of Shinji for me.'

He stopped when he heard those words in his head. He had promised Yui he would take care of their son… He couldn't go against his words.

Turning back and running as fast as he could, he went back to pick Shinji up. When he arrived, he saw his son wiping the tears and snot from his face.

He remembered the time he first held Shinji in his hands.

'Shinji…what kind of monster I am to do this to you?' he thought to himself.

Feeling a pair of strong arms engulf him, Shinji looked up and saw his father hugging him. He hugged Father back with as much force as he could and started crying again, asking for forgiveness. They stayed like that for a while, until Gendo picked Shinji and they left the train station together.

"I promise you Shinji, I will bring back your mother…" He took a look at his son, and with his free hand, he wiped a tear from his small face.

"And you will help me with that."
