Fon had kept Colonnello back, whispering to him and helping the rain to remain calm as he was obviously impaired and distrubed by the image of what Skull had gone through. They didn't want a repeat of last time. Skull would be safe with the others and it would maybe take an hour, not any longer. Enough time to give the rain a pep talk to make him ready to face his sky again.
Leilani hadn't protested anymore, just sitting down on one of the chairs. Verde was already busying himself with checking her vitals, only motioning her to stand up for height and weight taking.
Lal stayed next to the sky, as promised, watching Verde bustle and making sure he didn't do anything wrong. She wasn't worried about it but if it helped Skull to accept the checkup then she would do it.
Reborn was leaning against the wall, his eyes hidden by his Fedora but no one doubted that he watched the sky and Verde with hawkeyes and filing away every information that Verde said out loud to get Reborn informed as well.
Leilani still had her nose scrunched up "I don't like hospital stuff. I spend way too much time in the hospital wing at school."
Lal tilted her head, her eyes didn't stray from Verde but she used it to give herself and the sky a distraction "Really?"
Leilani nodded "Yeah, like at every end of the school year and naturally in between. Sport accidents filled up quite some time."
"You were an athlete?"
She had to smirk "Obviously. Star played in my house team. Youngest player in a century. I was that good that they ignored the rules to allow me on the team."
Lal nodded "I can imagine. You had any big games at the end of the year or did the exhaustion just come then?"
"Oh no. They were completely unrelated to sports. Just the product of my end of year adventures."
"Your end of year adventures?"
"Yeah, saving the school, saving people… facing my enemies, that kind of stuff, the usual stuff."
"That doesn't sound normal to me."
"It was, everyone expected it. I mean what else is one supposed to do if mortal peril is close or the danger of the school getting closed is nearing."
Lal blinked "Inform the authorities?"
Leilani shook her head "Nope, they're useless."
"You were eleven when you started your schooling at Hogwarts, right?"
"Yeah. First year was kinda wild and ended up with me being completely knocked out in the hospital wing after I killed my teacher."
Lal took a deep breath "...alright."
"Second year wasn't even that bad. I mean I was conscious and kinda healed but they still forced me to stay there even though I was awake. Like it could have been worse. I already managed to get healed after all. So they were just totally overreacting."
She scrunched her nose when Verde started to test her reflexes. "Third year well… okay yeah. I was really knocked out then… that wasn't that nice."
Lal intensely listening filled the information away, same as everyone else "And in your fourth year?"
"Never finished that. My end of year activity had me ending up in the streets of Romania instead of the hospital wing. Which is why I have my issues now."
Before Lal could say anything Verde had come with an empty syringe, attempting to draw some of Skulls blood.
The sky was quicker out of her chair than anyone could react "Oh hell no!"
Verde cleared his throat "I have to take some blood tests to figure out where your deficits are."
"Forget it. Under no circumstances will I allow that."
Reborn pushed himself off the wall "Are you afraid of needles? I can distract you. It won't take long."
"No, I'm not but I'm not letting anyone have something like that. This is insane. Who would ever be stupid enough to let someone else have their blood?"
"Blood Tests are normal, Skull. I get them done myself on the regular. Verde handles them for all of us."
She paused, looking at him stunned. "Are you braindead?"
"Excuse me?"
"He could do anything with it!"
"I made him sign a contract that he wasn't allowed to clone us."
She spluttered "Why would that even be your biggest fear? Blood has power, Reborn. Way more power. Are you trying to tell me you've got no clue at all how dangerous it is to have someone else collect their blood like this?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Freshly taken blood? Stored in a vial? Untainted blood? You can do everything with it."
"Blood Tests and cloning, yes."
"No, Reborn you don't get it, do you? You can bethroat people with it. You can sign contracts with that. You can curse them. You can bend them to your will. You can make them do anything or force any kind of state on them. There is no limit to what you can do with blood collected like this. Even worse if you're willingly giving it. It's limitless. You don't let anyone collect your fresh blood like this. Never."
Verde raised an eyebrow "You mean Voodoo?"
"No, it's greater than Voodoo. It's the biggest rule ever. Anyone even attempting to work with others' blood has to swear oaths. You just don't trust anyone with it. It's a disaster. I'm not that stupid."
Verde looked helpless at the hitman.
Reborn cleared his throat "Skull… if that calms you down.. not one of us has figured out how you do any of your flame tricks. We have no clue what you're talking about. Verde can't do anything even remotely similar to this."
"That's what you claim."
"It's the truth."
Verde tried again "I can promise it to you."
"Your promise doesn't count for shit. It's not like anyone here has to uphold them. Why would I trust something you can break that easily without consequences? Especially on this level. I would be mad to even consider it."
Verde was taken back, especially at the defensive stance the sky took. He had no clue what her rant really contained or how one could even attempt to do anything like this with blood. He hadn't planned on it either "Would you agree if it has consequences?"
She furrowed her brows "Having Reborn stand next to you while you work doesn't count. I don't trust anyone in this matter."
"I will swear on my flames. I want to help you Skull. Nothing more but for me to do that I need your blood sample. I can't run the tests without it."
"Reborn Could."
The hitman shook his head "I can't."
"Yes, you can. You… you just have to use your flames."
"And how would I do that?"
"Will them to do it. I have never learned that much about it but you can do it."
"I can't, Skull. I don't know how."
"That sounds like a you problem that you should work on figuring out."
"Skull… we want to help you. I wouldn't even know where to start."
Verde interrupted "I will swear on my flames. I won't do anything like that to you. I have no clue how and I don't plan to."
Reborn raised his eyebrow "You want to swear on your flames? You can lose them if you fail."
"It's not like it matters as I have no idea what Skull's talking about. Nothing will happen. So Skull, Would you be willing to give me a sample if I swear on them?"
She contemplated it, her eyes flickering between all of them "Why does it even matter?"
"I need the sample to help you. I can't do anything without it."
"You're gonna swear?"
"Yes."
"Then do it. if I hear one loophole the deal is off."
She stared intensely at him while he pulled out his flames and uttered his promise.
She let the words ran through her mind several times, weighing them but…there was no contradiction in them.
Still, she didn't feel great but in the end she allowed him to take the sample "You will do the test in front of my eyes though."
He nodded "If you wish that."
"And I will be allowed to destroy the leftovers myself."
"Alright."
Leilani did stay at his side, her eyes never leaving his fingers and the vial with blood. She Was more wary than anything else, even after his oath.
Honestly everyone else was a bit lost at her insistence. it was odd and it didn't make sense to them but in the end they relented. She refused to offer any more explanation on how one could anyone do something like this. Plainly refusing to even consider giving them an idea or hint.
She only got calmer after she destroyed the last speck of the sample. Even destroying the vial in itself.
Reborn cleared his throat "You weren't like this when you bleed on the roof."
"That's different. It came from a wound and it was already dried or connected with the roof. Same as it was surrounded with my magic. A blood sample is different from an open wound on that level. Same as dried blood. The matter in which it's attained is important, freely given blood, blood taken by force and blood from an injury are vastly different."
"I don't see a difference."
"You don't have to, to make it less the truth."
The hitman sighed "Alright… are you ready for your treatment?"
She clenched up again "Sunflames?"
"Yes."
"Do I have to?"
"Skull… this is serious. Let me help you. I'm starting small and keeping it on a low level."
"I'm going to curse you the moment you pull anything funny."
"I won't stop you."
She still looked more than just untrusting at him. Cautious.
The hitman gestured her to sit down again which she reluctantly did.
He crouched down in front of her "Can I have your hands?"
"Why?"
"To make this progress go smoother."
She bit her lip as he finally accepted it.
The hitman concentrated strongly, keeping his flames at a minimum to not agitate her too much but still the moment he let his flame wash through her she flinched harshly back, immediately pulling her hands back.
He paused "Did this hurt?"
"What do you think?"
"I…"
"You have no clue. You told me you know how to do this."
"I can activate the ending to mend it."
She crossed her arms "You're just pushing your flames in me and hoping for the best?"
"I tell them to heal you."
"That's it?"
"Yes."
"That's all you're doing?"
"Yes."
She blinked "...that's too simple."
"Flames are simple."
"No, they aren't. Are you healing everything like this?"
"Yes."
"No different approach? No matter what you're healing?"
"Yes."
"That's primitive."
"Excuse me?" his eyes narrowed, reprimanding himself to stay calm.
"That's not how healing works. Not at all. There are differences. You have no control like this."
"But I do."
"No you don't. Pushing flames in and hoping for the best is the worst approach ever."
"I'm not forcing them in, I will them to act on my behalf."
"You mean to activate."
"Yes, the healing process."
"But that means you haven't mastered your flames in the slightest."
"Are you trying to insult me?"
"No, but our flame approach is completely different. You… don't just push them in stuff and tell them to activate. This… no."
"It's how it works."
"No, it isn't."
"Can we try again? I can go softer."
"No, the most you give me is…wait. Verde is cancer common for flame users?"
The scientist inclined his head "It is."
Leilani groaned out "I… okay. I might have an idea why you all keep shrinking when I am away from all of you."
"And that would be?"
"I need to figure it out completely. Give me some time."
"But your treatment." the hitman threw in, not ready to give up.
"If I'm correct about my assumption then you can try again… but not like this. This is just… no."
"You have nerve damage, Skull. I can heal it."
"I don't want this kind of healing though. I don't need it. It isn't urgent. I lived with it for decades. You can try all you want after I figured this out."
Verde pushed his glasses up "What seems to be the issue?"
"Our approach to what flames are is different, vastly. We use them completely differently and… I know what's at fault. I just need to figure out where the difference lies."
"You mean that you played around with them? While we have been taught?"
She shook her head "No, it's the other way around. I have been thaught and you guys… you had someone who fucked around with them and set the limits in place. You are the one playing with them. I just need to figure out if it's possible for you to learn or not."
"So you want to experiment with us?"
"Not with you…" she bit her lip "But with the ones I already build a foundation with. The untainted ones that haven't ingrained wrong limitations over decades."
Reborn quirked his eyebrow "Tsuna?"
"Not just Tsuna. I want to meet the whole tenth generation."
"You want to experiment with them?"
"No, I teach them and figure out where your actual limits are."
"Skull."
"Do me the favor and organize it please. I'm not going to explain more. It won't make sense and I have to be certain."
A glint was in her eyes, more than just determined and at the will in her voice, the slight spark up from her sky flames he could do nothing else but incline his head once again, almost bowing as he kneeled in front of her.
