As promised, here's Cowboy. If you weren't aware, I have started another story and am working between the new one and this one and will post on both as I can. My new one is called Stolen Hearts and it's written in first person as Elizabeth. Again...it is very different than what you're probably used to. Please check it out and let me know what you think. For some reason, it isn't showing up in a search on this site, so hopefully you can find it. I do post links to the chapters on the FB page, so you can get to it that way. Or click on my name here and it should show up.
Now...Cowboy. This one comes with justice, tender moments, joy, tears, surprises, and STEAM! So, tissue warning and STEAM ALERT. Please leave a review! :) And again, if you aren't on our When Calls the Heart ~ Fan Fiction Facebook page, hop on over and check it out. We have a lot of fun discussing all the WCTH stories and several writers include visuals to go along with each chapter...including me. So, if you really want to get to know Cowboy, join the group and see what the family looks like, his ranch, the horses, the magic closet, and so much more!

August 17th, 2015 – Jefferson City Courthouse, Missouri
Jack, Elizabeth, Sam, Tom, and Lee sat in the courtroom behind Sarah, waiting with everyone for the jury to come back with a verdict. Jack, Tom, and Lee had each testified as witnesses to the beating in the bar, and Sam testified regarding Sarah's condition when she arrived at the hospital. The testimonies and evidence piled up against Steven, leaving everyone to believe he would get several years in prison. The prosecuting attorney had even found and convinced two other victims of Steven to testify.
It hadn't taken long for the jury to deliberate, and Elizabeth squeezed Jack's hand as they watched the men and women return to their seats at the front of the courtroom.
The judge waited until everyone was seated, and then he began.
"Okay, members of the jury, have you elected a foreperson?"
"Yes, we have, your honor."
"What is your juror number?"
"27."
"Has the jury reached a verdict as to each account of the information?"
"Yes, your honor."
"One verdict and one verdict only?"
"Yes, your honor."
"Please pass all of the paperwork to the bailiff."
Once the judge had the documents in his hands, he read over the results of the jury's deliberation, studying each page closely.
"The defendant will rise and face the jury and hearken to its verdicts," the judge stated as he straightened the papers into a single pile.
Jack moved his arm around Elizabeth and squeezed her shoulder as Sam grasped Tom's hand.
A woman in a black jacket stood, holding a paper in her hand, and began to read.
"In the state of Missouri versus Steven Larson, verdict count one, we, the jury, find the defendant guilty of the charge of Domestic Assault of the Third Degree. Verdict count two, we, the jury, find the defendant guilty of the charge of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. Verdict count three, we, the jury, find the defendant guilty of the charge of Rape in the First Degree."
"Members of the jury, are these your unanimous verdicts?"
"Yes, your honor."
"Is there anyone that does not agree with the verdicts that were read?"
"No, your honor."
"Mr. Larson, the facts of this case are very disturbing to me. I am not going to wait on your sentencing due to the nature of your crimes and the fact that you're clearly a repeat offender. I am implementing the maximum sentence for each of these counts. On the count of Domestic Assault in the third degree, I sentence you to the maximum of four years in prison and a $10,000 fine. On the count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, I sentence you to the maximum of four years and a $5,000 fine. On the count of Rape in the First Degree, I sentence you to the maximum of thirty years and a fine of $20,000. These sentences will be served consecutively, making a total of thirty-eight years. I am also ordering you to pay restitution to Ms. Gibson in the amount of $250,000. Mr. Larson, I really hope that during these thirty-eight years, you will take the time and reflect on why you're there. It takes a real man to beat up a woman. If I could, I would lock you up for life."
As the judge continued to speak to Steven, Sarah turned and faced the family as tears streamed down her face. Once he'd finished, and Steven was taken away, Sarah ran and thanked them for their help and kindness, wrapping each of them in a tight embrace.
Jack and Elizabeth invited everyone to their house to celebrate, and Sarah followed the line of trucks to the ranch that had begun her recovery and redemption. She prayed the entire way, thanking God for bringing this family into her life and sparing her from further harm or worse.
As they passed the barn, Sarah saw Dalton step out and wave. She smiled, waved back, and continued around to the house, where she saw Rosemary and the kids standing on the front porch. Sarah stepped out of her little car sandwiched between two large trucks, making her feel very small. As she closed her door and turned around, she noticed Dalton crossing the gravel toward her and nervously waited as he approached her.
"Good afternoon, ma'am."
"Please, Dalton. It's just Sarah."
"Okay, Sarah."
His smile made her relax, and she took a long slow breath.
"I hope everything went well today."
"It did. Steven got sentenced to 38 years."
"That's wonderful." Dalton removed his dirty baseball cap and held it between both hands. "I'm very glad he got what he deserved, and I hope this brings you some peace."
"Thank you, Dalton."
"You two ready to eat?" Jack called out from the front door.
"Ready to go inside?" Dalton asked as he held his arm out for Sarah to slip hers through.
She did, and they walked into the house together, catching the eyes of everyone inside.
Once the meal was over and it was time for Sarah to leave, Dalton walked her to her car. He opened her door and waited until she was inside with her seatbelt fastened before closing it. She started the motor and rolled her window down.
"Do you think I could take you out to dinner this weekend?" Dalton asked, surprised by how nervous he felt.
"I really would love to, Dalton, but I'm going back in the morning."
"Going back?"
"Yes. I live in Kansas now. After Steven was caught, I was moved to a shelter near Overland Park. My support group, therapist, and job are there, and I'm not ready to change things yet. I'm still trying to recover from Steven's abuse, and I'm learning to trust people again."
"I understand." Dalton squatted and folded his arms across the door in the open window. "I know you'll do great things from this experience."
"How do you know?"
"I just have that feeling." Dalton smiled, and once again, Sarah relaxed. "Can I text you from time to time to see how you're doing?"
Sarah smiled and handed him her phone. "I'd love that. Can you put your number in there?"
Dalton took the phone, added himself to her contacts, then returned it. Sarah immediately composed a text and pressed send.
"Now you have my number," she said, still smiling. "I really need to get going for now."
"Okay. May I see your hand?"
Hesitating at first, Sarah placed her hand in his. Dalton lifted it to his lips and gently kissed her knuckles. "It was very nice meeting you, Sarah Gibson. I hope to see you again."
With a flushed face, soft blue eyes, and a scar across her cheek that was still healing, Sarah smiled and dropped her gaze. "It was nice meeting you, too."
Dalton stood, shoved his hands into his pockets, and took a step back. He waited until she was out of sight before returning to the house, where several sets of eyes had been watching from the windows.
"What?" he asked as he stepped inside.
"Love connection?" Lee asked.
"No, not exactly. She's returning to Kansas in the morning and won't be back."
"I'm sorry, Dalton," Elizabeth stated.
"It's fine. She needs to heal."
Jack walked up to his friend and laid his hand on Dalton's shoulder. "Maybe she'll be back someday soon."
"I suppose."
The group could see the disappointment in Dalton's eyes as they returned to the table, and Jack changed the topic to Frank in hopes of distracting him.
"How is Frank?" Dalton asked.
"He's doing much better. They've had him standing and taking a few steps," Jack answered.
"He will start to get better faster now," Sam assured them. "He's getting a wider range of motion, so his body will begin to react more, and we'll see a big change in his ability to get around. It's going to be a very long time before he can walk without assistance, but hopefully, we can get him home soon, and he can do this therapy there."
"That would be amazing," Elizabeth stated. "The kids really miss seeing them as frequently as before."
"Yes, ours, too."
They spoke a little more about Frank, then flowed through ranch work, church, and rodeos. By the end of the night, the kids were passed out on the floor in front of the TV, along with the dogs. Lee and Rosie began carrying theirs out and getting them buckled in while Sam and Tom woke theirs to go home.
Jack began carrying the boys upstairs while Elizabeth said goodbye to everyone, then gathered Brianna as Jack returned for Peyton.
"It was a good day," Elizabeth said as they climbed the stairs side-by-side.
"Yes, it was. Steven got what he deserved, we had a great evening with friends, and now we can top it off with some nookie in bed."
"What's nookie, Daddy?" Peyton asked, then yawned really big.
Elizabeth covered her mouth to keep from laughing while Jack scrambled in his mind on how to answer.
"Cookie, honey. I said cookie."
"We aren't s'posed to eat in bed. Night, night."
Jack got his daughter situated in her bed, turned her light off, then joined his wife in their bedroom. She was on the bed nursing Brianna for the final time of the night.
"Quick thinking there, Casanova."
"I thought she was asleep."
"Clearly, she wasn't," she giggled.
Jack lay on the bed and watched his wife feed their baby. "She won't remember it come morning," he grinned.
"I'm sure you're right."
"So, nightcap?" Jack asked with his fingers up, making air quotes.
"We'll see," Elizabeth teased. "But since when do you need to ask?"
"Just being polite," he winked.
Elizabeth finished nursing Brianna, got her in a fresh diaper and onesie, then tucked her in. As soon as she returned to the bed, Jack practically pounced on her, rolling her onto her back.
"Cookie, huh?" Elizabeth asked, laughing.
"Nope, for you, it's nookie."

August 22nd, 2015 – Northview Shopping Center, Missouri
"I want this, and this, and this," Jackson shouted as he ran through the aisles, picking out school supplies.
"Hey, buddy, we need to stick to the list," Jack said in an attempt to reel him in. "Find a backpack that you like."
Jackson scanned the aisle, and Jack noticed his son's eyes grow incredibly wide. He reached in, grabbed a bag, and held it up for Jack. The little boy was so excited his hands were shaking.
"Monster Trucks!"
"Shhhh," Jack said and quickly moved to his son. "Not so loud." Jack couldn't help but laugh at the little boy's excitement.
"But, Daddy. It has El Toro Loco on it. See?" Jack held the backpack up for his daddy to see and included with several other trucks, and right out in front was Jackson's favorite one.
"I see that. That's awesome. So, I take it this is the one you want?"
"Yes, yes, yes," Jackson answered, bouncing up and down.
"Alright, toss it in the cart."
"Can I wear it now?"
Jack laughed. "Sure."
Elizabeth walked down the aisle toward them with Brianna in her car seat and sitting on the top of a cart. The twins were walking in front of her when Jackson spotted them and got excited once again. He ran toward them, spun around, and showed off his new backpack.
"I want a new backpack," Colton said.
"Me, too," Peyton exclaimed.
"You two get yours next year," Elizabeth reminded them for the tenth time.
Once they found everything on the supply list, the family started toward the checkouts, wishing very badly they had done this weeks before. With school beginning in two days, the store was packed, and the inventory was low. But they'd been able to find everything that was needed, and Jackson was just as excited.
Jack and Elizabeth, each pushing a cart filled with food, diapers, pencils, paper, and much more, carefully made their way across the parking lot to Elizabeth's Denali. Jack loaded the groceries and supplies while Elizabeth loaded the kids.
As Jack drove home, Jackson talked non-stop the entire way, unable to contain his enthusiasm about starting school in two days, and the twins listened intently the whole time.
"Wait," Jackson suddenly said.
"What, Blakey?" Colton asked.
"What will Colton and Peyton do while I'm at school?"
Jack and Elizabeth looked at one another, grins across their lips, and Jack answered. "Well, I'm sure they will miss you very much. But they will help Mommy with chores in the house, they can help me with outside chores, and they will probably play a lot."
Jackson fell silent, and Elizabeth looked back to see what he was doing. He was sitting quietly in his booster seat and staring out the window.
"Is everything alright?" she asked him.
"What if I want to help you and help Daddy and play with Colt and Pey?"
"You can when you get home, on the weekends, and all summer."
"But what if you need my help and I'm at school?"
Elizabeth glanced at Jack, who was grinning broadly and trying not to laugh.
"Well, Jackson. We will just have to figure out how to do without you, and if we can't, we'll wait until you get home."
"You will?"
"Of course, sweetheart. We'll still need your help with lots of things."
"Like what?"
"Well, you're the only one that can get Brianna to quiet down when she can't sleep."
"That's right. I hope she doesn't do that while I'm gone. But if she does, you can always come to school and get me."
"We'll keep that in mind, Buddy," Jack said, finally able to respond without laughing. He reached for Elizabeth and held her hand, squeezing it tightly.
Jackson returned to his fast-talking and informed them of everything he thought would take place on his first day, and continued with this all the way home.

August 23rd, 2015 – University Hospital
It had been over three weeks since they started moving Frank to the edge of the bed and over five weeks since the accident. Jack and Elizabeth walked into the room just as Rebecca and Trace began moving Frank into a chair. There was a gait belt around his chest, and they held it and Frank's arms as he walked forward.
Jack and Elizabeth noticed he was getting around much better than even two days ago already and were getting anxious to bring him home. They slowly turned him and eased him down into the seat, then Rebecca placed a pillow behind him as Trace retrieved a blanket. Once Frank was comfortable, they left so the family could visit.
"Lookin' good there, Pops," Jack said as he pulled a chair beside Frank. "You're looking much better today." Jack reached back and dragged a chair up for Elizabeth.
"I feel much better," Frank replied. He had a genuine smile and reached for Charlotte's hand.
"How long have you been here, Mom?" Elizabeth asked.
"Since this morning."
"We missed you at church."
"Sorry. I was planning on going but really wanted to see Frank. Did you get my text?"
"Yes, Jack got it just before service began."
"How's John doing?" Frank asked, really missing the church.
"He's doing pretty good. But everyone misses you and your sermons," Jack answered.
"I can't wait to get back up there."
"Your pulpit will be ready and waiting for you," Elizabeth said.
"Thank you, Dear."
Elizabeth brought Brianna with them, and Frank couldn't take his eyes off the baby.
"Would you like to hold her?" Elizabeth asked.
"Yes, please," Frank said with his arms out.
Elizabeth stood and eased her daughter down until Frank had her positioned on his shoulder. Remaining asleep, Brianna pressed her forehead to Frank's neck and snuggled against him.
"Thank you. I needed this," he said as he tenderly rubbed her back. "She's gotten so big."
"Yes, she's growing fast," Jack responded.
Elizabeth noticed an uneasy expression on Frank's face and held her arms out. "Would you like me to take her?"
"No, I'm fine." Frank moved Brianna to his shoulder, shifted his hip a bit, then relaxed back in the chair. "That's better. How was Autumn's second birthday party?"
"It was good. The kids had a lot of fun playing games," Elizabeth answered. "Rosie made up some really good ones for them to play."
"Sorry, I missed it. I wish I could have been there."
"They missed you, too."
They continued to visit while Frank held Brianna. He didn't want to give her up, but he started hurting too much and had to get back into bed. Once there, he was soon asleep as Jack and Elizabeth talked with Charlotte.
"How's he really doing?" Jack asked his mother.
"It's rough. He's tired of being in here, and he feels more useless every day. He's sad he's missing out on things like the rodeo and Autumn's party. He misses his church."
"It won't be long now, will it?" Jack asked.
"They are saying maybe two more weeks in here. They want to give him at least another week before removing the fixator, and then they want to make certain everything holds once it's removed. If that goes well, he can go home and do his therapy there. He'll be in a wheelchair for a while, then a walker."
"I'll get the guys together, and we'll get a ramp built and anything else that needs to be changed in the house."
"Thank you, Jack. Maybe you can come over tonight when I get home and check things out."
"Sounds good, Ma."
"Is Jackson excited about school?" Charlotte asked.
"He is beside himself," Jack laughed. "He's been talking non-stop for three days straight about it."
"Hopefully he still feels the same way when he gets home from school tomorrow," Charlotte chuckled.
"We hope so, too," Elizabeth stated. "The twins will miss having him home all day, that's for sure."
"He'll have so much fun with Austin in the same building."
"Oh, most definitely. They have already planned out every recess for the whole week."
Frank stirred and shifted in the bed, causing his face to grimace from the pain it had clearly caused. They watched him, waiting to jump up and help until his face and body relaxed. Charlotte reached up and straightened the blanket, ensuring he wouldn't get cold.
"He'll be home soon, Ma," Jack assured her.
"I hope so," she said as she lifted his hand and held it in hers. "I miss having him home."
"I'm sure you do, Ma. We all do."

Jackson stood at the door with his backpack filled with supplies, waiting for the bus to appear. As soon as the large yellow vehicle pulled into the drive, the little boy practically danced in place.
"It's here! It's here!"
The twins ran to their brother's side and stared out the window. "Look, Mommy! Look, Daddy! The bus is coming for Blakey." Colton shouted.
The excitement could be felt in their air that entire morning, and now that the bus was in view, it multiplied like an electric current.
"Time to go, Daddy," Jackson exclaimed as Jack opened the front door.
"It sure is, buddy. Have fun at school and listen to your teachers."
"I will. Bye-bye, Mommy."
Elizabeth knelt in front of her son and wrapped him in her arms. "Have fun, sweetheart."
Jack, Elizabeth, and the twins watched as the large bus maneuvered around the drive, then stopped to let the overly ecstatic little boy on. Jack noticed Elizabeth lift her hand and looked to find her wiping a tear from her cheek. His arm was around her shoulders, and he squeezed her and drew her into him a little tighter.
"Bye-bye," the twins called out and waved.
Jackson could be seen in a window, smiling ear to ear and waving back. As the bus drove away, the twins ran out into the grass, their arms still high in the air, waving frantically at their older brother.
"Well, I didn't think it was going to be this hard," Elizabeth stated and wiped her cheeks.
Jack turned her to face him, gently brushed his thumbs along her damp skin, and wiped it dry. "You're a great momma," he said with a smile.
"And you're a wonderful father." She stretched onto her toes and kissed him. "What about the letter?"
"We'll give it to him when he gets home. I didn't want him sad before leaving."
"Good call."
"Come on, you two," Jack called out to the twins, who were still running around the yard.
They bounded up the steps and through the front door, followed by Jack and Elizabeth. Brianna was now awake in her swing, cooing to the stuffed horses above her.
"Good morning, darling," Jack said as he picked her up. "How's my beautiful girl?"
Brianna gripped Jack's cheeks, squeezing them, as she let out a screech. Jack grimaced but let her continue to grab at him. He blew against her neck, making a vibrating sound, and the baby girl squealed even louder.
"Ouch," Jack stated as he pulled his head back and looked at her. "You're loud."
This caused his daughter to react even more as she hit his face and laughed. Elizabeth was standing near the sink, watching her husband and daughter, and Jack began to sway back and forth as he sang to her. Brianna quieted and stared at her daddy's mouth, mesmerized by his voice.
…..
Once Jackson told the family about his entire day, from the moment he stepped onto the bus until he stepped off, and every minute in between, Jack and Elizabeth took him into the living room and sat him on the couch.
"Do you remember how your mommy wrote you a letter for your birthday?"
"Yes."
"Well, she wrote another letter for your first day of school." Jack removed the envelope from his back pocket and handed it to his son.
Jackson ripped the paper, pulled the letter out, unfolded it, and then handed it to his dad to read.
My Dearest Blakey,
Today is your first day of school. I can imagine how excited you are. I bet you're bouncing off the walls while you wait for the bus to show up. I know how you get when you can't wait to do something. Be a good boy, listen to your teachers, follow the rules, and have lots and lots of fun. You are a very smart boy, and I am so proud of you. I just know you'll do great.
I wish I could be there for this big day, but I know Elizabeth and your dad will make it very special.
I hope you are still being the awesome big brother that you are to the twins. They will look up to you since you're older, so always set a good example.
Jackson stopped his daddy by laying his hand on the letter. "She doesn't know about Brianna. I'm a good big brother to her, too, right?"
"Yes, buddy. You're the best big brother the twins and Brianna could ever have."
"Okay," the little boy said with a big smile. "Keep reading, please."
Know that I am looking down at you, smiling ear to ear because I'm so proud, wishing I could give you one more big hug. But keep me in your heart, and I'll always be with you.
I love you more than anything in the world.
Love, Mommy
Jack folded the letter, placed it into the envelope, and handed it to his son. Jackson held it with both hands, reading Your First Day of School across the front in his mother's handwriting.
"How are you doing?" Elizabeth asked as she rubbed his back.
"Okay," the little boy answered.
"What are you thinking about?" Jack asked.
"I feel bad again."
"Why?"
"Because I didn't even think of Mommy at all today. Does that make me bad?" Jackson looked into Jack's eyes, his little lip quivering and his eyes welling.
"No, Jackson. It doesn't. Today was a very exciting day, and your mind was busy with school. Mommy understands."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course. She knows you love her."
Jackson wrapped his arms around Jack's neck, and the two hugged each other. The little boy sniffled a bit, then wiped his nose across his arm. Turning, he hugged Elizabeth and moved onto her lap while she rubbed her hand up and down his back.
Jackson straightened and looked back and forth between Jack and Elizabeth.
"What is it?" Jack asked.
"Are there more letters?"
Jack looked at Elizabeth, both struck by this little boy's intuition. "Yes, there are more letters for other occasions," he answered.
"Okay. So, I get a little bit of Mommy on super special days?"
"That's right, Blakey," Elizabeth answered.
"I like it when you call me Blakey."
"I like it, too."
Jackson moved into Elizabeth's arms again and tightly wrapped his around her shoulders. "I love you, Mommy."
"I love you, too."
Peyton ran into the room and skidded to a stop when she saw Jackson. "What's wrong? Is Blakey sad?"
"Give us just a minute, sweetheart," Jack said. "Wait in the kitchen, and we'll be right there."
"I'm okay. Can I go play now?"
"Of course," Elizabeth answered and helped him to the floor.
"Thank you for reading me the letter."
"You're welcome," Jack said and ruffled his hair.
"Let's go play," Peyton called out as she grabbed her big brother's hand and led him downstairs.
"He's amazing," Jack stated as he rested his arms on his legs.
"Yes, he is. Just like his daddy," Elizabeth remarked.
She ran her fingers through Jack's hair, then stood and moved in front of him. With her hands on his shoulders, she gently pushed him back onto the couch and sat on his lap, straddling him. Cupping his face with her hands, she leaned down and kissed him very passionately as Jack's hands slid under her shirt along her back.
"Okay," Jack said and pushed her back slightly. "We'll have to continue this tonight."
"Sorry. I got caught up in the moment," Elizabeth said as she eased off his lap. "You tend to do that to me," she teased.
Jack reached out, grabbed her hips, and pulled his wife back onto his lap. After kissing her again, sending both of their hormones into a frantic tizzy, Jack released her and helped Elizabeth back to her feet.
"And that's what you do to me," he added with a grin.
Elizabeth straightened her shirt, combed her fingers through Jack's hair, and headed for the kitchen. As she glanced back over her shoulder, Jack was still watching her walk away, a smile remaining on his lips.

August 28th, 2015 – Hope Meadows Ranch
Jackson's first week of school had been the best time of his life. He was already learning new things, making new friends, and playing with Austin as frequently as he could. The twins missed him horribly during the day and stood at the window every afternoon, watching for the big yellow bus.
Frank's therapy was progressing much faster now. He was able to pull himself up and with assistance, walk to the chair and sit for a couple of hours. The doctors had mentioned removing the external fixator the following week, and Frank was ecstatic about that. It was bothering him terribly and hindered him in some of his movements when getting up and sitting.
The weather had heated up, and Jack spent many hours outside, making certain the horses were staying cool and in the shade. That afternoon, when Jackson was at school and the other three were with Charlotte, Jack went inside to cool off in the air conditioning. Finding Elizabeth in the kitchen, Jack went to the freezer and grabbed an ice cube.
When Elizabeth glanced at her husband, his head was tipped back, his eyes closed, and he rubbed the ice cube across his neck. Elizabeth dried her hands on the towel, tossed it aside, then crossed her arms and leaned back against the counter.
Jack opened one eye, peeked at his wife, then closed it and continued running the ice cube across his skin.
"It's so hot," he said and pulled his shirt over his head.
Pressing the cube to his chest this time, he zig-zagged it back and forth as he moved it down his body, stopping just above his belt buckle. He opened his eyes to see Elizabeth standing directly in front of him, her arms still crossed, with a smirk on her face.
"What are you doing?" she asked, shaking her head.
"I'm trying to cool off. Isn't this how you do it?" A sly grin spread across his lips as he looked down at his wife.
"Not quite," she said, grabbing the ice from his hand. "It's like this."
Elizabeth tipped her head back and moved the cube along her throat and down her chest as she let out a little moan. She was wearing a low-cut tank, and the water dripped between her breasts. When she opened her eyes, Jack's gaze was locked on her with his "I need you now" look in his eyes.
"What?" she asked with a grin.
"I came in here to cool off, but you have done the exact opposite to me."
"What are you going to do about it?"
Jack gripped her beneath her arms and lifted her onto the island.
"Oh, in the kitchen, Mr. Thornton?"
"Wherever we stand," he said as he ran his hands up the inside of her thighs. "Unless you'd like to take this elsewhere?"
"Hmm, we can start here. Finish somewhere else."
"Any place in particular, Mrs. Thornton?" Jack grabbed the waistband of her denim shorts and pulled her to the edge of the granite.
"I'll have to think about it."
"You do that," Jack said, then pressed his lips to her neck.
He sucked on her skin, making his way across her collarbone and onto her chest. Pulling the neckline of the tank open, he revealed the black lace bra she was wearing. Jack straightened and looked at his wife.
"I haven't seen this sexy number in a while," he stated.
"The kids were gone; no need to nurse Brianna today. I wanted to feel good."
"Hmmm...I think you had this planned all along," Jack stated as he tucked his finger under the lace and grazed her nipple.
"I planned for you to come in here and act like a fool with an ice cube?" she teased.
"Maybe. How do I know you weren't sending me subliminal messages all morning?"
"Are you going to talk all day," she asked and leaned back on her hands.
"Elizabeth, I'm not going to last long enough to take you anywhere other than this island if you don't stop doing that?"
"Doing what? I have no idea what you're talking about." The smirk on her face let her husband know she knew exactly what she was doing.
Jack grabbed her hips and pulled her forward, pressing his hips toward her as he did so. He kissed her neck again, along her collarbone, and down her chest, not stopping this time at the bra. Pulling the cotton fabric and lace down, he released her breasts and cupped each one with his hands. Elizabeth was working on his buckle now, quickly unfastening it, then undoing the button and zipper of his jeans. She pushed the denim over his hips and watched as it fell around his knees.
Jack lifted her tank over her head, then unsnapped her bra with one hand and one quick motion. He tossed it aside, then started on her shorts. Once she was undressed, and Jack worked his boots and jeans the rest of the way off, he gripped her hips again and pulled her forward. Guiding himself in, Jack entered her swiftly and hard, sending a wave through her every nerve ending, causing her to moan.
Elizabeth eased back until she was lying down on the cold granite as Jack slowly moved in and out. Despite being in the air conditioning, they were both damp with sweat as their bodies heated up from the electricity being generated between them. Jack's hands remained on his wife's hips, and he continued at a steady pace, never missing a beat and sending her on a ride of ecstasy as she called out in pleasure.
Jack slowed, not wanting to end yet, grabbed Elizabeth's hands, and pulled her up. He moved his arms around her waist and lifted her off the countertop.
"Where to next?" he asked in a breathless voice.
"Anywhere," she answered as she put her arms around his neck and locked her ankles behind him.
Jack carried her into the living room, never losing their connection, and eased her onto the couch, where he resumed his sensual quest.
They made love, drawing it out as long as they could, pleasuring each other in every way possible. As they finished on a soft blanket on the front room floor, Jack grabbed an edge of the fleece and pulled it around them, and they lay motionless as their bodies and hearts recovered.

Jack and Elizabeth pulled up to Charlotte's house, and the twins ran out to meet them. Charlotte stepped out of the house with Brianna in her arms and a refreshed expression on her face. Jack opened the back door to the truck and helped Jackson down, who then ran to greet his siblings.
"Blakey's home!" Peyton shouted when she spotted him.
Giant hugs were shared among the three as Jack and Elizabeth crossed the lawn to the steps.
"Hey, Ma. How were they?"
"Perfect angels," she replied. "The ramp looks wonderful. Tell Dalton and Walker thank you from me for helping you."
"I will."
"And young man, what is that in the machine shed?" Charlotte asked with a hand on her hip.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Jack replied as he tried to hide his grin.
"You know exactly what I'm talking about. What is that tractor in there for?"
"It's yours and Pop's."
"We can't accept that, Jack."
"You can, and you will," Jack said firmly. "Tom and I have been shopping for one since the accident. This one is more stable, and the cab is built stronger."
"Jack, then at least let me know what you paid for it so we can pay you back."
"Nonsense. We got a little money from the old tractor and a great deal on this one. We practically stole it," Jack lied.
"I know when you're not telling me the truth. You have your little telltale signs, and you're lying to me."
"Ma, Tom, Sam, Elizabeth, and I wanted to do this for you and Pops for everything you do for us. Just let us have this. Please."
Charlotte let out a harsh breath and conceded. "Fine, but I'm not telling Frank about this."
"Don't you think he'll wonder where it came from? He will see it, you know."
"Yes, but until then, I'm not saying a word. Let's wait until he's better, home, and in great spirits."
"Okay, Ma. That we can do."
"Weren't you two going to take a vacation before the summer was over."
"We talked about it. But then Pops got hurt, so we canceled it."
"Yes, Mom, we couldn't leave you two."
"You and my son need to get out. Go do something fun, just the two of you. You need to plan your trip and let me know when you're going. We'll work things out for the kids."
"No, Ma. The timing just isn't right. We need to be here to help you."
"Frank is in the hospital for at least two more weeks. You should try to plan something before then. Get a break before he gets home, and we need even more help."
Jack looked at Elizabeth, and the two shrugged their shoulders.
"I mean it. Plan your trip, then Sam, Rosie, and I will figure out a schedule for the kids. And after you get back, I'll tell Tom and Sam to do the same thing. I mean it. You listen to your mother."
"Fine, Ma. We'll see what we can come up with for next week."

August 30th, 2015 – Kansas City International Airport
Jack and Elizabeth scrambled and planned a quick getaway. They would be flying out soon and would be gone for four days. Once again, Jack kept the destination a secret from Elizabeth, only telling her to bring her swimsuit. She knew he'd wanted to go to a beach again since their honeymoon, so her mind was going wild with ideas.
They dropped their children off with Charlotte the night before because their flight was early in the morning. After two and a half hours on the road, Jack pulled into a parking spot in the long-term lot.
"Are you really not going to tell me where we're going?" Elizabeth asked as she pulled her suitcase from the back of the Yukon.
"I'll tell you when we get inside. We need to hurry."
They jogged through the parking garage and across the lanes of traffic that ran along the front of the terminal. Finding the United Airlines counter, they hurried to the line. Elizabeth checked their luggage in on the kiosk while Jack saved their place, then she returned with the printed luggage tags, and Jack helped attach them.
Once they were checked in, luggage dropped off, and boarding passes in Jack's hand, they started toward the TSA area to make their way through security.
"Okay, are you going to tell me?"
Jack handed Elizabeth the boarding passes, and she flipped through them, seeing the final destination Lihue, Kauai.
"We're going to Hawaii?" she asked loudly.
"Yes. I want to spend some relaxing time on the beach and watch you walk around in the little blue suit. You did pack that one, right?"
"Yes," she giggled. "I packed them all."
"Good," he said and moved her arms around her.
"I've always wanted to go to Hawaii."
"I know," he replied and kissed her nose.
"Jack Thornton? PBR World Champion Jack Thornton?" a man's voice asked, booming over the noisy crowd.
Jack and Elizabeth looked around until they found a group of eyes staring at them.
"It is. That's Jack Thornton," one of the men said and pointed toward them.
Jack lifted his hand into the air and waved.
"Wow, I'm married to a celebrity," Elizabeth teased.
"Ha ha."
"Excuse me. Sorry. Excuse me. Pardon me."
Jack and Elizabeth heard the man working his way through the crowded line of people on his way toward them.
"I just need to see him. Excuse me. Mr. Thornton, can I please get your autograph for my son? He's stuck at home with cerebral palsy, and he just loved watching you ride. He was heartbroken when you retired."
"Of course," Jack answered and took a notebook and pen from the man. "What is your son's name?"
"Charlie. Hello, ma'am."
"This is my wife, Elizabeth."
"Oh, we know who she is. We were at the rodeo in Nashville when the announcer said you were engaged. Nice to meet you, ma'am," he said and tipped his hat.
"Here you go," Jack said and returned the notebook.
"Thank you so much," he said and held his hand out.
Jack took his hand and firmly shook it. "What's your name?"
"My name is Joe."
"Tell me about your son."
Joe held his phone out and pulled up a photo of his son to show to Jack and Elizabeth. "Charlie is twenty years old. He loves rodeo and country music. He sings and has performed at a few small events. He's been your biggest fan since he was ten years old. We would watch every weekend, and Charlie would search and search until he saw your face on the TV. So, when we took him to Nashville to see you in person, he was beside himself. He'll be so sad he wasn't here to meet you. He has good days and bad days. He was actually supposed to be with us today, but he wasn't feeling well, so he and his mom stayed back."
As Joe spoke, they followed the line as it moved closer to the security check.
"Do you guys live around here?" Jack asked.
"Yes, just outside Kansas City in Liberty."
"Is Charlie aware that I'm still in the rodeo?"
"What? No."
"My buddy and I team rope now in the PRCA."
"Lee Coulter?"
"Yep, the one and only."
"Oh, we love Lee, too. Charlie will be so stoked to know you're still competing."
"Write your number down, and I'll shoot you a text next time we're in the area for a rodeo. I'll get your family some tickets to come to watch. It's no PBR, but it's still a lot of fun."
"Charlie loves everything," Joe stated as he scratched his number on a blank page in his notebook. "He would love that." Joe tore the paper out and handed it to Jack.
Jack carefully folded the number, took out his wallet, and placed it next to his money. "It was great meeting you, Joe. Please tell Charlie that Lee and I said hello. But Beth and I need to run and catch our flight."
"Oh, yes, of course. Yes. Thank you so much, Jack." He shook his hand again. "Ma'am, very nice to meet you."
"You, too, Joe. Tell Charlie hello."
"I will. Can I take a quick picture for him?"
"Of course. Come here," Jack said.
"You, too, ma'am. If you don't mind."
"Would you like me to take the photo?" the person behind us in line had asked, having overheard the entire conversation.
Joe handed him his phone, stood between Jack and Elizabeth with his arms on their shoulders, smiled ear to ear, and got his photo.
"Thank you so much. Sorry to bother you on your trip."
"No worries, Joe. Anytime. I'll be sure to call when we're in the area."
"Thank you. Thank you so much."
As Joe returned to his family, Jack and Elizabeth moved through the security check. Once they retrieved their carry-ons from the belt and put their shoes back on, they hurried to their gate. With thirty minutes to spare before boarding, they found two seats and relaxed as they caught their breath.
"You're such a wonderful man," Elizabeth said and laid her head on his shoulder.
"Comes with the job," he remarked and moved his arm around her.
"No, it doesn't. You're a kind man."
"Just trying to be the man God wants me to be."
"You're succeeding," she said as she tipped her head up and kissed him. "One of the many reasons I love you, Cowboy."
"I love you, too, Beautiful."
Once boarding began, Jack and Elizabeth were the second couple on. They took their seats in first class and settled in for the flight to Denver. With an hour and a half layover, they took their time to their gate, stopping for lunch along the way, then boarded the plane for the seven-hour flight to Kauai.
It was 5:00 P.M. local time when they landed in Lihue. On their way in, Jack leaned over his wife, and the two watched the turquoise water float by as the plane descended.
"It's beautiful," Elizabeth said as her heart began to race with excitement.
"Breathtaking," Jack said, but his gaze was not on the landscape.
With their luggage gathered, they stepped outside and headed to their rental car. Finding the Enterprise sign, Jack checked in, signed the necessary paperwork, and was given the keys to their awaiting Jeep.
As they drove out of the airport and turned right onto Kapule Highway, they got their first sight of the Kauai shoreline and beaches as they headed toward their resort. Gorgeous blue skies, turquoise waters, and feral chickens captured their attention along the way, and Jack and Elizabeth excitedly pointed and remarked about all the beautiful scenery and sights that were the beginning of their much-needed vacation.
