Sam walked into the restaurant and headed to the takeout area beside the bar, eyes heavy as a yawn escaped passed his lips. He was so exhausted but he needed to do what he had to do in order to keep the peace in his home. Dealing with a pregnant girl was no joke and he for one could not wait until this baby was born. The bipolar behavior, verbal abuse, and of course, the late night trips to satisfy her cravings, were taking a toll on him. But to appease and save the wrath from both her and his mama, he just shut his mouth and did what she asked of him. Besides, this was his family after all.
The woman watched as the man came in, busy looking at his phone as he approached the front of the bar area, "Good evening, dining in or picking up?"
"Picking up have an order for Sam."
"Ah, that very specific order that caused the kitchen to raise brows." She commented with a smile as she grabbed the ticket, watching as the man finally looked up at her, causing her to giggle when she saw the look on his face.
"She's pregnant and easily irritated. I apologized if it was too much but I just had to make sure that everything was correct."
The woman chuckled as she pushed the door open to the back and called out for him order to come to the front. When she turned back to him, "No, it's fine. Through all the teasing, the cooks made sure to have it exactly the way you wanted it."
"Thank you." He let out a deep breath, pulling out his wallet and handing her his card, "I'll be glad when this is all over."
She swiped his card and handed it back to him, along with the receipt once it printed, "Is this your first kid?"
"Oh noooo, hell no." Sam protested, seeing the strange look, laughing as he hoped to clear up the serious amount of confusion, "She's my little sister and she's staying with me…and I don't have any kids." He got out just as his phone went off again, indicating that he had a text, "Excuse me."
Ask for Mercedes.
Why?
Just do it. I need her to see something for me.
"Speaking of the devil." Sam mumbled as he glanced back up at the woman, who was now drying the drinking glasses with a towel, "She asked me to ask for Mercedes. Is she here?"
The woman sat the glass down and glanced over his way, "You're talking to her." She stopped what she was doing and really looked at the man, chuckling when she realized exactly who he was, "Oh my God, you're one of Lizzy's brothers. I'm guessing the and I quote 'single, extremely grouchy and stubborn bachelor, who can't find a good woman to save his life'."
"Yeah, I'm going to kill her. How dare she comes to work and spread all of my business and lies to her co-workers." He ranted as he rolled his eyes, hearing her giggle, he came out of his frustration and really looked at her, "I've never seen you around here."
"We have two other locations, I mainly be at the one downtown." She informed as she leaned against the counter, "But when I do be here, it's usually in the morning during her shift. Now that she's on maternity leave, I'm here more."
"Well, she could've been here working a couple more weeks instead of working my nerves."
"I wouldn't allow her."
"You wouldn't allow her?" Sam repeated the words as his eyebrow raised, "You're her manager?"
Mercedes shook her head, "I'm the owner."
"Oh, so I have you to blame for my hardships." Sam commented teasingly, causing the woman to snort as she nodded, "She's been a pain in my ass, more than her usual. I think she's doing it purposefully."
"Maybe but she's almost seven months pregnant, cut her some slack big bro." She said just as the boy brought out the bag and sat it on the counter. Mercedes moved over and placed some utensils and napkins in there before sliding the bag towards him, "Besides, knowing her, I'm sure she truly appreciates you."
Sam grabbed the bag from her, knowing that deep down that was true. It was good to put a face to a name because his little sister talked about this woman a lot, "And just so you know, she adores you, says you're the best boss ever."
"I try." Mercedes responded with a smile, hearing her being called for in the back, "Tell my girl I said hey and I will be checking on her soon. It was nice meeting you, Sam."
"Same to you, Mercedes." He watched as she gave him nod before disappearing into the back. He tightened the grip on the bag and headed out the restaurant, his phone simultaneously ringing as he did, already knowing who it was once he answered without looking.
"She's beautiful ain't it?" His sister greeted, hearing the sigh escape his mouth.
"Lizzy."
"And she's single, no kids, very educated, nice body, as you saw and such a sweet person, Sam." His sister bragged as she rubbed her stomach with a cheesy grin on her face. Her intentions weren't ambiguous at all and she knew that he probably caught on to what she was doing, "She's perfect for you."
"Lizzy, I don't need you playing matchmaker." He rolled his eyes as he got into his truck, sitting the bag on the seat, "I'm fine."
"No you're not." She countered as she sat up on the couch, "You need someone that is going to bring that unserious and softer side out of you and she's the one to do it. Plus, I feel that you both could balance each other out."
"I'll be home soon." He hung up the phone before she could say something back. She was worse than anyone in his family when it came to meddling in his love life. Of course he had quite a few bad relationships, but he didn't realize they were that bad until his family kept telling him so. He jumped a little when there was a knock on his window, seeing that it was Mercedes, holding up a box when he let down his window.
"Lizzy called and asked for an extra slice of coconut cake." She handed him the bag, "For you."
"She's…."
"Not as slick as she thinks." Mercedes added with a smile as she stepped back onto the sidewalk, "But I will entertain it."
"Oh really?"
"Mhm." She hummed out as she stared at him, "I put my number in there just in case you want to use it."
"I do." He admitted, a little too quickly which shocked the hell out of him, as he stared back. What the hell. There was the harm of getting to know the woman better. Besides, everything that his sister said was true. He was attracted to her and he wouldn't mind to see where this could go, "Would you like to have dinner with me sometime?"
"I'd like that."
"Okay." He gave her a smile as he watched her head back into the building, prompting him to turn back forward and finally leave with what he came there for and so much more.
