Currently in the raining streets of Gotham, none other than Jason Todd was making his way through one of the many alleyways wearing an opened up grey hoodie. He could hear the sirens wailing which caused him to take a quick glance behind him, but kept on walking soon after
However he suddenly stopped walking as he felt his phone vibrating from inside his currently wet jacket. He pulled out the small device from the safety of his pocket and turned it on
As soon as he read what was on the screen he felt himself tense up in realization. What was flashing on his screen was none other than an incoming transmission with the words code black fading in and out. He knew what that meant even without pressing on the decrypt just below it
Jason hesitated for a while, letting himself stare at the flashing words. However he knew he couldn't keep this up and after one more moment of brief hesitation he pressed the decrypt button.
Holding his thumb on the button until it finished loading, Jason could only think of all the possibilities that could have caused a code black to be transmitted. He knew that he wouldn't be the only one watching this and although he had his ups and downs with the others, he could only hope they would be alright after seeing what was on the file
Just as Jason, in multiple other parts of Gotham were three other people who also saw their devices flashing with the same message as Jason's phone had done
Dick sighed as grabbed a towel from the seat holding all of his stuff as he dried himself of from the small workout he had just done. He sat down as he grabbed a water bottle to have a drink, until he saw a flashing from the corner of his eyes. He placed the bottle down and grabbed his phone. As soon as he did though, Dick wished he hadn't done that as he saw the message flashing before him. The first boy wonder hesitated a very long time, staring at the screen with multiple scenarios going through his head. As much as he felt this wouldn't be a good idea, Dick felt he needed to know what it was that caused this message to be transmitted in the first place
Meanwhile at the clock tower, Barbara was cleaning a few things up from under the desk. Suddenly she heard one of the many computers beeping as she looked over towards the big screen and saw the incoming transmission. Although somewhat hesitant, she didn't delay her time wondering the what ifs as she pressed the decrypt right away
Lastly was Tim. He had been tinkering with a few of his gadgets when he suddenly saw his computer screen receive an incoming transmission. He stared at the screen with a worried look on his face. Code Black meant one thing and that one thing was something Tim hoped he would never have to face… however it seems unlikely now as the youngest bat went on to decrypt the file before him, knowing full well he needed to know the cause
"If you're watching this… I'm dead" said the familiar voice of Bruce Wayne as he was seen on the screen of the 4 people currently watching "This is a code black. This message was automatically triggered when I destroyed the cave and everything it contained. We both know it won't take long for Gotham's criminals to realize the Batman is gone and we can't count on the GCPD… haven't trusted us since Jim died. Gotham will need its protectors more than ever. I'm leaving you the belfry as base of operations. Some of the technology is outdated, but it has the gear you need and all my files. You've always had my back when I needed you. I know you'll keep Gotham safe. Good luck… and goodbye"
There we go the second chapter of Gotham Knights! So here we see the former proteges all find out about the fate of Bruce Wayne. Next chapter will show their reactions after hearing the message :)
