Chapter 1 – Lesson number one

*Four years later*

Four years after their birth, Tomoe and Sasuke were growing quite fast, all too fast if you asked their mother, and had both gotten a decent grip on the basic manners of being an Uchiha. This meant that they both had gotten kanji lessons to write fitting of an Uchiha, were taught to be polite when speaking to others and in the presence of their elders. But as soon they were out of earshot, the twins became rambunctious kids who ran around having fun playing with each other.

Both of them had inherited their clan's black eyes, and their mother's looks, with them both having inherited her fair-skinned complexion and facial features, as well as her raven-coloured hair. Unlike their parents, neither of the twin's hair was straight and seemed to defy gravity with how it spiked and stood into the air. In order to try to tame her hair, Tomoe had chosen to put her hair into a tall spiky ponytail, while keeping her bangs in a style similar to her mother's. Sasuke had decided to just let his spiky hair flow freely at the back of his head while trying to mimic his brother's bangs. However, while both seemed to have gotten their looks from their mother Tomoe had inherited her height from her father. At four years old, she was about 105 centimetres tall, about 10 centimetres taller than her younger brother, who seemed to have gotten his height from his mother. Both were often found wearing different coloured t-shirts with the Uchiha clan emblem embroidered on the back and a pair of shorts. Sasuke often preferred to wear a blue shirt with the Uchiha fan on the back, while Tomoe preferred a black shirt instead.

A few days after they had turned four, their parents had decided it was time to start their training. Tomoe and Sasuke were currently busy playing tag in the backyard of the Uchiha main house when their father came out in the garden. Fugaku took a moment to take in the sight of his two children enjoying themselves before he called out to them. "Tomoe, Sasuke!".

At the sound of their father calling both children stopped immediately and ran over to their father. "Yes father?" both children answered in unison.

Fugaku looked down upon them and started, "Now that you have turned four, it is time that we start your training to become proper Uchiha ninjas."

At the prospect of finally starting their ninja training, both children looked at each other and smiled, before cheering out loud. When they looked up to see their father still looking at them, they quickly calmed down before responding "Understood father."

Fugaku almost let a small smile show on his face, it seemed his children were eager to become proper Uchiha ninja, but he quickly suppressed it and started speaking "As you know, the Uchiha is one of the founding clans of Konoha," at this, both children nodded while Fugaku continued talking, "therefore, you must always show your best side and show everyone that the Uchiha is has earned their place as the strongest clan in the village. Many of the villagers believe that many Uchiha are born prodigies and that we have an inherent advantage compared to most other fellow leaf ninja. While it is true that we are born with the Sharingan and pride ourselves on its power, it is not all there is to our strength. We Uchiha excel at many areas besides our doujutsu prowess, therefore as children of the Uchiha clan and even more as children of the clan head, you are expected to be better than your peers in every area. To this end, we will start your training today just as we started training your brother at this age. Is this understood?" Fugaku stopped speaking to look at his two children.

Both Tomoe and Sasuke seemed to take a moment to process all their father had told them, after a quick look at each other, both kids firmly nodded and turned to their father and once more replied in unison "Yes father!"

At this, Fugaku couldn't help but show the small smile he suppressed earlier, while the children were unlikely to be prodigies to the same degree as their brother, both of them had the drive necessary to become strong Uchihas. "Very well then, follow me," he said, turning around and walking towards the clan training grounds with both children following shortly after.

*Uchiha training grounds*

Tomoe and Sasuke were following their father at a distance, and when they had determined that they were out of their father's earshot, they started talking about how excited they were to finally start training.

"This is so cool," said Tomoe in an excited but hushed voice. "We finally get to start training and become strong ninjas like father, mother, and Ichi-nii."

"I know right?" replied Sasuke, "According to mother, Itachi-niisan had already unlocked his Sharingan at this age, so we have a lot of catching up to do," he said determinedly.

"What do you think we'll learn first? Maybe the fireball jutsu. Father did say that it is an important Uchiha jutsu, or maybe fire clones, or maybe even how to walk on water like Ichi-nii and Shisui-niisan do when they spar with each other," Tomoe started eagerly rambling and listing all kinds of things they had seen their brother do, "or maybe we'll even unlock our Sharingan like Ichi-nii"

"I hope it's the Sharingan, I can't wait to unlock mine," Sasuke said in an equally excited voice.

The two twins had been so busy rambling and coming up with ideas and theories about what they would learn, that they hadn't realised they had reached the clan training grounds and that their father had stopped walking. As a result, they ended up bumping into his legs and falling over. When they realised what had happened, they quickly stood up, dusted themselves off, and readied themselves.

They had been taken to a part of their clan's training ground that seemed more like a garden rather than a training ground. They had been in this part of the Uchiha complex before, but when they had tried to play there, they were quickly removed from that area being told it was dangerous as their clansmen trained there and did not account for children playing.

Fugaku simply looked at his children, huffed, and started speaking, "The first thing you shall learn," Fugaku paused for a bit, looking at his children who were looking at him with faces filled with excitement and anticipation, "how to stick a leaf to your forehead." At this, all of the excitement ran out of his children's faces, and he couldn't help but smirk a little.

"Really?" both kids asked in slight disappointment.

"Really," he answered.

"But we can already do that," Sasuke said to his father.

"Show me then," Fugaku replied.

At his, Sasuke walked over to a nearby bush, plucked a decently sized leaf from its branches, walked over to his father, and placed it on his forehead while leaning his head back, "See?"

Fugaku merely bowed down and blew the leaf from his youngest son's forehead. "No, you can place a leaf on your forehead, but not stick a leaf to it. Allow me to demonstrate," Fugaku said as he picked up the leaf he just blew of his son's forehead, he then stuck the leaf to his forehead and knelt down to be on the same level as his son, "Now, you try to get it off."

Sasuke looked at his sister who just shrugged, then he tried to blow the leaf off his father's forehead, but to his surprise, the leaf didn't even seem to realise someone was blowing on it. At this, his sister walked up to their father and tried to peel the leaf off with her hands. Expecting the leaf to come off immediately she barely pulled, but as she realised the leaf seemed intent on not moving from their father's forehead, she started to pull harder but the leaf refused to budge. After a while of both children trying in vain to get the leaf off of their father's forehead, Fugaku rose and as he did, the leaf fell off his forehead and towards the ground.

"Wow, how did you do that?" both kids asked their father, as they looked at him in wonder, "the leaf didn't even move no matter what we did."

"That is what you're going to start learning today, it is called the leaf exercise. The goal of the exercise is to control your chakra and focus it on a single point, thereby keeping the leaf from falling off. This exercise is meant to help you control your chakra, an aspect that is vital when it comes to furthering your career as ninjas. Without proper chakra control, you will be unable to use most jutsu or walk on water as you mentioned earlier."

At this both kids looked sheepishly at the ground, realising that their father had heard their entire conversation.

"Now, before the both of you get a leaf, we will start with meditation" Fugaku declared. "Before you can use chakra, you need to locate your chakra core first. Sit down and close your eyes," Fugaku started. When he saw both of his children had done as they were told, he continued, "Now, locate your chakra core. It should feel like a warm ball in your body. Do not try to rush it, it takes time to find your core and start to use it. It takes most new academy students days before they are able to start the leaf exercise" He looked at his children as they sat and tried to feel their chakra. Both sat with concentrated faces, trying to find their chakra core.

After a few hours of meditation, Tomoe suddenly opened her eyes with a broad smile on her face and exclaimed "I found it!"

Fugaku nodded at his daughter and turned his attention to Sasuke who still seemed to be struggling to find his core.

Minutes later, Sasuke opened his eyes to look at his father with joy "I found it, I found it. It's right here," Sasuke said pointing at the middle of his chest.

Fugaku nodded and said, "Correct, your core is in the middle of your chest. Now that you have found your chakra, it is time you tried to use it. First of all, fetch a leaf from the tree behind you, sit down and place it on your forehead". When he had confirmed that the twins had done so, he continued "Now, take the chakra from your core and move it to your forehead and use the leaf as a focal point and gather your chakra there and concentrate on keeping the leaf stuck to your foreheads"

The twins had closed their eyes and focused on taking chakra from their core and moving it to their foreheads. After half an hour, Fugaku spoke up "Preparation time is over, now I will try to remove the leaves from your foreheads, do not stop concentrating."

After he had spoken, Fugaku walked towards the twins and stood in between them. After a few seconds, he turned to his son and attempted to blow the leaf off his forehead. While the leaf rustled a little, it never left Sasuke's forehead. Seeing this, Fugaku decided to up the difficulty and see how well the leaf was stuck to his youngest's forehead. Fugaku then tried to gently flick the leaf off his son's forehead. This time the leaf moved, but it stayed on his forehead. Deciding to test his son further, Fugaku and grabbed the leaf and lifted it from his son's forehead like it wasn't held down by anything and was just placed there. Satisfied with the results his son had produced, he gave Sasuke a small nod as he turned towards his daughter to give her the same test. Similar to her brother, as Fugaku blew on the leaf it did little more than rustle on Tomoe's forehead. When Fugaku flicked the leaf on her forehead, it resisted slightly more than her brother's leaf did. When Fugaku grabbed the leaf, the tip of the leaf gave a small fight, before letting go of her forehead.

Satisfied with the results of the twin's leaf exercise results, Fugaku turned to his children and spoke "For your first time, you have both done well. Tomoe, you seem to have an easier time moving and focusing your chakra compared to Sasuke, but it is a very small step ahead. You will repeat this exercise every day from now on under supervision until I say otherwise. Furthermore, I will not be able to supervise your progress every day, so it is most often going to be someone else who oversees your training. Do not attempt this without supervision, while it is not a particularly dangerous exercise, it will not do if you practise it incorrectly. Is this understood?" Fugaku narrowed his eyebrows to look sterner to emphasize his point.

"Yes, father."

Satisfied, Fugaku nodded and led the children to a different part of their clan's training grounds. While the previous area had been lush with grass, bushes, and trees, this area was just the ground with dirt, throwing targets with white lines painted on the ground at different distances, training dummies, and a small area where there had been made several circles in the ground, marked with white paint.

Fugaku once more turned to his children and started speaking. "The area we were in before is the chakra control section of our training grounds. That is why it is filled with bushes, trees, and is near the lake so that our clansmen can practice chakra control as they wish. This area, however, is the sparring area. Here you will practice your shurikenjutsu and your taijutsu. The round targets are for shurikenjutsu practice and the training dummies for taijutsu practice. Additionally, the circles you see on the ground are sparring areas, it is very important, that you do not enter the circles unless you have agreed to spar with someone beforehand and enter as a pair. It is an unspoken rule here, that if you are in the sparring circles without an opponent, you take on all comers. Do you understand?"

Both children swallowed their spit and nodded their heads.

"Good. As with the chakra exercise, I will oversee your first lesson but afterwards, someone else will oversee the lessons. Today, I will introduce you to the Uchiha fighting style, tomorrow you will start on shurikenjutsu. Any questions before I begin explaining?" Fugaku asked.

Tomoe raised her hand.

"Yes, Tomoe?"

"If we have agreed to it beforehand, are Sasuke and I allowed to spar with each other without supervision?" she asked.

"Only once you are both deemed competent enough in the Uchiha fighting style to use it on your own without malpractice, not before," Fugaku answered.

"Understood father."

"Any more questions?" Fugaku looked at his two youngest children.

This time it was Sasuke who raised his hand.

"Sasuke?"

"You said today you will introduce us to our clan's fighting style and tomorrow would be shurikenjutsu. Does this mean we will switch between shurikenjutsu and taijutsu or do we practise both things every day?" Sasuke asked.

"For starters, you will spar one day and practice shurikenjutsu the next. When you have gotten a good understanding for both, both activities will be done every day, same as with your chakra training."

"Understood."

"Any more questions?" When none of them raised their hand Fugaku spoke once more, "Good. Then we can begin. The Uchiha fighting style has been developed to complement our Sharingan but is still perfectly usable without it. As our Sharingan allows us to perceive the movements of our opponents, our fighting style is designed to take advantage of that. The overall theme of our style is to predict and exploit. When we see an opponent coming in for an attack, we dodge or grab the attack and exploit the opening and attack. Now, I will show you our base stance, and you will copy it"

Both children nodded eagerly and started to mimic their father's stance, with a few corrections from their father. Once they had learned the starting stance to an acceptable degree, they were led through the basic kata of the Uchiha style to get an understanding of the style. After hours of practising the basic kata, their father had them spar against each other for 10 minutes using what they have learned of the Uchiha style.

When the 10 minutes were up, Fugaku stopped his children to give them their evaluation. "Sasuke, you have a good understanding of the kata and how to use them." At this Sasuke smiled broadly at his father, but Fugaku continued "However, your form is sloppy and your responses lack impact, you might be able to hit your opponent but you will not be able to finish it. Tomoe, your form is good and your hits are precise, but how you use the kata needs work. I counted at least 20 times you missed an opportunity to respond to Sasuke's attack because you used the wrong kata" At the evaluation Tomoe merely nodded, casting a look at her brother whose mood had worsened. "Seeing as you outdo each other on different aspects of our style, I expect you to use each other and improve until all aspect of our style is immaculate. Understood?"

"Yes father," said the twins, nodding.

"That will be all for today, I will help you tomorrow with shurikenjutsu, but someone else will oversee your chakra control exercises. I shall join you for practise every Sunday, but other than that, a clansman will oversee your training. You are free to go for the day." With that Fugaku turned around and walked towards the main house, but before he left the training grounds, he turned his head and spoke "However, you both did well for your first day both in taijutsu and chakra control. You truly are my children." And with that, he left.

Hearing their father's approval of their skills, both children were ecstatic and wanted to rush off to tell their mother and brother that they had impressed their father on their first day. However, neither child was familiar with the amount of work they had completed that day, so when they started to run towards the house, they both fell over exhausted, but with a huge smile spread across their faces.
