FAMILY PORTRAIT, FAMILY SHADOWS
CHAPTER 16
Just a quick filler chapter while I'm working on the next big one. Enjoy!
Jeanne Benoit cursed to herself as her pager went off, calling her to the hospital. She'd been following that... woman... Tony called his wife and the little boy around for a few weeks now, and was frustrated that she'd never managed to get them alone. There was always someone from Tony's team with them. As she neared her car, she saw several parking spaces away, Agent Gibbs leaning on a car, watching her. In her nervousness, she fumbled and dropped her car keys. As she stood from picking them up, she looked toward Agent Gibbs again, but he wasn't there. He wasn't anywhere in the parking lot, she saw, looking around. She'd seen him several times, lurking, watching her, and he always appeared and disappeared without a trace. Her conscience playing tricks on her? Could be. She was nervous about being caught. But that little boy should have been hers and Tony's, not this...this... argh! She hated calling her a woman. Gothic trash was more like it.
As she got in her car, Jeanne put the hypodermic needle she had for the occasion in its special case, like diabetics carry their insulin in. With one more glance around for Agent Gibbs, she headed for the hospital.
Gibbs watched Jeanne drive away in her white Cadillac – big, white car like Kaity had seen at the park that day. He knew he was starting to get to her – she was getting jittery, sloppy, and she'd make a mistake soon. But the frequency of her appearance was beginning to alarm him. Something had to give soon. But he knew Dr. Benoit would never get a hand on Abby or his grandson, not while he was around.
