Chapter 4 Attempts to resurrect Eve

It was morning

Wall-e stayed up all night. He was tired and depressed especially since he did not know why Eve was trapped in her capsule. He knew it was because of him and wanted to do everything to help her.

After opening the door, he saw that the sun was shining outside. The idea of unfreezing her capsule came to him.

It was difficult to get to the roof as it was steep when going up. Also the capsule was heavy and that also caused some difficulties. Wall-e didn't give up and within 15 minutes he managed to get to the top. He placed the capsule towards the sun and towards his side he pointed Eve so that he could look at her if she woke up and waited for her to unfreeze.

He waited a very , very long time and there was no result. Even when the temperature outside was 40 degrees (104'F) or more, the capsule still held at minus temperatures and, surprisingly, did not even evaporate. Wall - e all the time sat in front of the capsule with the hood on. He was all sweaty and hot, yet he did not let her out of his sight.

More hours passed, and then more until Wall -e began to get bored so that he played with his tools. At one point he heard thunder and saw that storm clouds were approaching. Thunderstorms with rain were rare, but getting such lightning was very dangerous especially for a man. Wall-e couldn't take Eve inside because her capsule was too heavy, and because of the steep descent he could trip and injure her in the fall. He quickly ran to his trailer and searched through his belongings finding two umbrellas.

It didn't take long and it started to rain hard. Wall-e held an umbrella over Eve's capsule . He dozed off at times and quickly woke up , when he heard thunder. He was all wet including his hair even though he was wearing a hood, but he didn't pay attention to that because all that mattered was protecting Eve .

''(THUNDER!) AAHH …Oh my God'' - he was frightened by one of the lightning bolts, which struck a short distance from him.

He knew it was going to be a very tough night.

The storm was not the only problem. After a few hours, the storm was over. Wall-e was relieved that none of the lightning bolts hit him, let alone Eve. However, it was beginning to get cold. Wall-e was shivering, completely soaked. He had gotten rid of some water from his hair earlier, but due to the lack of other clothes, he couldn't change into dry clothes.

Wall-e was shaking all over until he was holding himself in a sitting position with both hands. He looked at Eve and thought that maybe he should cover her to keep her from freezing more. He slowly got up from his position and walked to his truck.

He took from it two sheets, which he had previously tied together and began to wrap around the capsule enough to provide warmth. He also took his one but his was so thin that it hardly provided any warmth at all especially when the wind started to blow.

When after less than an hour it began to blow harder , Wall-e knew what was just coming ... Sandstorm.

It was still less than two hours until dusk. Wall-e thought quickly while trying to find a way to cover Eve. Then, at the bottom, he noticed something looked like a large metal barrel that was wide enough to easily protect Eve's capsule. Unfortunately there was no more room inside and Wall-e had to cover himself with his sheet . Before he proceeded he decided to block the ends of the metal barrel about protruding buckles to hold it up against any movement. After making sure everything was securely fastened, he quickly lay down behind the elements positioned in the direction where the sandstorm was coming and wrapped himself in a sheet.

The morning has come

There was a significant amount of sand on the roof. Under one of the dunes that had formed, Wall-e emerged. Because of the considerable amount of sand, it was very difficult to walk and Wall-e could barely keep his balance.

''Eve is probably under this mountain of sand '' - he thought, looking at the very large amount of sand in front of him.'' I'd better remove this sand with use ...''

When he wanted to grab the shovel, he realized by touching his back that it had been left inside with the bag . He took several large steps toward the steep descent, which was so covered with sand that it formed something resembling a diagonal line. Wall-e took a slow step and, suddenly not feeling the ground, began to slide down the sand like a slide, lying on his back.

''It was ... even funny hehehe'' - he said for a moment laughing while shaking off the sand.

After opening the door, he immediately grabbed the shovel resting next to the door and headed back upstairs, getting rid of the sand and dust from down to place where Eve was. Seeing the intact barrel, he took a breath knowing that Eve was whole. He began to remove the metal and sheets from it , which were cold . Wall -e touching them felt a pleasant chill . Eve remained the same all the time .

''(sigh of sadness) ... Eve ''- he said sadly '' So far my efforts have brought no result ... But I'm not going to give up. I will find a way,'' - he said in a proud voice making a promise.

Wall -e thought. Looking at her, he wondered what else he could do . He noticed that his battery had four strips and began to approach the generator.

''Wait... the battery? That's it'' - he shouted cheerfully, finding a solution '' Maybe I can revive her''

He quickly ran to the capsule and started looking for a battery-like component or something similar. He carefully inspected the entire capsule and his gaze stopped on a component with a symbol resembling a battery with a lightning bolt located on the right side under one of the glass window. Wall-e tried to open it with his fingers but was unable to move it.

''Hmm, I guess in the shoulder bag he should have... Ahhh, again !? - he said to himself reaching for his bag, but again he forgot that he left it in the truck.

He returned to the truck taking his bag as well as the battery cables in case it turned out that his cable, which he uses for the generator, did not fit. After returning to the mountain he first charged his pacemaker, and then used a crowbar to open the capsule component which he found. Inside was a power cell permanently attached and several cables connected to either keep the person in stasis or provide energy.

Wall-e decided that he would try to cause a short circuit, which might make the capsule open. He couldn't use his cable from the generator, so he took the cables from the battery. He connected the cables first to his pacemaker , and then slowly began to bring the other two closer to the capsule. He held literally a second , when suddenly ...

''(ZZAAAAAPPPPPP!)

The force pushed Wall - e back so hard that he was now lying quite a distance from the capsule. He felt a strange sensation in his chest, and there was also some smoke rising from him. Nothing serious happened to him, but this sudden push back surprised him a lot and he was almost sure that when he touched the capsule cables then for a few seconds something resembling an energy field was visible. Wall - e guessed that the capsule created such a barrier of protection automatically in situations probably when someone tries to violate it . Now he wasn't surprised why he was electrocuted , but was glad that the short circuit was weak enough not to kill him.

''Eehhhh …... better that I never do it again.'' - he said and fell on his back again disappointed.

When Wall-e lay like this, then he felt someone touch him on the cheek. It turned out to be Hal who was rubbing Wall-e's face with his nose, thinking he was unconscious.

''Easy, I'm not dead,'' he said, slowly standing up unhooking the cables from the pacemaker.

''Ouch!'' – Wall - e suddenly screamed, dropping his gear. "Oh man, this is hot," he said, holding his hand.

Although he had an wearing gloves, he felt it, when he touched the metal accidentally. He decided to grab the wires for now until the metal was cold, then he put them back on the shelf. When he returned to the truck, he took one of the cookie and gave it to Hal, who immediately began to eat. Wall - e felt stupid for completely forgetting to leave food for Hal.

It was almost evening

Wall-e decided that he would show her some interesting places. He found some old cart big enough to fit and accommodate Eve's capsule. Around the capsule, in place slightly lower than her head, were entwined Christmas tree lights, some of which were glowing. He took her to various places and even on a nice river cruise where they floated on a raft. At the end they found on a bench, where they could see a beautiful view of the setting sun. Wall -e used his laser to write his name and her name and combine it into a heart.

''I like coming here''- said Wall-e to the capsule facing the sunset as well as partly at him. ''This view makes me sometimes forget about unpleasant situations.'' Wall-e looked at Eve '' ''You know Eve ... I remember you asking me about the pacemaker as well as the goggles. I didn't manage to tell you everything, but I don't remember where these things came from on me. The pacemaker is a very valuable thing keeping me alive, while when it comes to my goggles ...''

Wall-e stammered in a sentence and got up from the bench walking a little more in front of her without obstructing her view behind him. Wall-e didn't really know what he was doing, but with her he wanted to show it before the sun went down. Wall-e reached into his goggles and slowly raised them to his forehead. I think it was the first time in a long time that he showed someone his real brown eyes.

''As you can see I can easily see everything without goggles. With their help I can see from any distance, but as I said it is impossible to take them off.''

Wall-e didn't say anything for a while, but he was tormented by the urge to tell her, so he decided to say: ''I don't know if you can hear me but ... I ... I ... wanted to tell you that ...'' - Wall - e stammered uncertainly whether he should say it , but after a while he gathered his courage by putting his hand on her capsule. '' From the moment, when I first saw you, I fell in love with you . Eve ... I .. love you.''

Proud to he said that, he continued to stare west, but suddenly his hand felt cold.

''AAhh, oh my gosh, my hand …Ouch, Ouch, oh man… My hand gonna freeze''

His gloved hand froze to the capsule . It hurt his hand when pulling, but he had to get his hand out before it will froze. He pulled all the time until after a while...

''AAAAAAAAAA!'' - He shouted while holding his left hand. Part of his skin was torn and part was frostbitten. Nothing was visible on the capsule but his hand was numb. Fortunately, the glove protected his hand and thanks to this, a large part of the skin on his hand was not torn off , and only a little on the fingers.

It wasn't long before they were again at Wall-e's truck, sitting on the roof (Wall-e was sitting, Eve was standing in the capsule). Wall-e previously set up an old TV and connected two controllers. The console was still working even though many years had passed and they were playing the game Pong (actually Wall-e was playing).

Wall-e's hand stopped hurting, but it pinched him a little when touching . He used his right hand to hold the controller, and moved the knob with his left. Wall-e had a high lead winning by a score of 8,000 points to zero. He calmly played, waiting to see if perhaps this mode of entertainment would make Eve wake up. Once again, his efforts were futile. He looked at the capsule standing in the same position for several hours and all that could be seen was only the green light inside glowing over and over again.

''Aahh'' Finally he sighed defeated dropping the controller. Now he really did not know what to do and had to finally give up.

Tonight was a calmer night. There was no sandstorm or precipitation and the wind only blew lightly with a cool breeze. Wall-e despondently put on his hood and began to hide his equipment.
