"Jadey...?" Cat's voice is low as she shakes her best friend awake "Jadey, wake up."
"Hm?" Jade stirs a bit, opening her eyes only slightly "Cat? What's going on?"
"I can't sleep." Cat admits "I've been tossing and turning all night. I just can't do it."
Jade rolls over to check the clock on her bedside table, mindful not to wake Beck in the process. It's 4:46 in the morning, they had gone to bed hours ago...but their alarms, Cat and Jade's at least, will be going off in less than two.
"Alright..." Jade yawns, carefully removing Beck's arm from around her waist and slipping out of bed "C'mon..."
She grabs her hoodie, or technically Beck's hoodie that she wears more often than he does now, off of the floor and pulls it on as she walks out of the bedroom, Cat following close behind her. The two girls quietly make their way down the hallway away from the bedrooms, and into Beck and Jade's living room. Jade turns on just as many lights as she needs to illuminate the room enough so they can see where they're walking, but not all of them so that the brightness doesn't shock her still-sleepy eyes.
"What's going on?" Jade asks her friend as she slumps down on the couch
"I'm nervous!" Cat admits "Like...sick to my stomach nervous."
"Cat..." Jade sighs, still rubbing the sleep from her eyes "Why are you nervous? You're not having second thoughts, are you?"
It's Cat's wedding day, even if it's hard for Jade's body to process that at the moment because it's still dark outside. She and Robbie wanted to adhere to the tradition that the bride and groom spend the night before their wedding apart, and don't see each other again until they meet at the alter. Jade had offered to let Cat stay in the guest room at her and Beck's apartment, leaving Robbie to stay in his and Cat's own. Cat and Jade set their alarms for 6:30, intending to be at the wedding venue by 8:00 with the rest of the bridesmaids to start setting everything up. Of course, they had stayed up much too late giggling and talking about what the next day's events would bring, and Jade had been worried about Cat getting enough sleep as it was. Now to find out she hasn't slept, or has barely slept, at all is even more concerning.
"No!" Cat exclaims immediately "Of course I'm not. I love Robbie so much, I've never been so sure of anything in my life!"
"Then what's the problem?"
"Everything else!" Cat exclaims, flopping down on the couch beside Jade and hugging one of the throw pillows to her chest "What if the caterers screw something up, or what if they drop the cake? What if the venue accidentally double-booked itself and the other couple put their deposit down first so they get to use the space and we have nowhere to go? What if there's really bad traffic and people don't make it in time and then-"
"Woah..." Jade cuts her off, reaching out and touching Cat's arms "Those are a lot of what-if's to be throwing around before five o'clock in the morning, Cat."
"I can't help it!"
"Let's say for some weird reason all of that stuff you just mentioned does happen..." Jade proposes "At the end of the day, would it really matter as long as you still get to marry Robbie?"
"No..." Cat sighs "I guess it wouldn't."
"Okay then..." Jade chuckles "Then there's no use in worrying about it. Cat, there's absolutely no way that everything is going to go one hundred percent according to plan today. There are going to be little snags that we have to deal with, but your big day is going to be perfect regardless."
"Thank you, Jadey..." Cat says as she leans her head against her friend's shoulder "I knew you'd be the best maid of honor ever."
"That's not even coming from me as a maid of honor..." Jade admits "That's just coming from me as your friend."
"My best friend."
"Your best friend." Jade agrees "You really haven't slept at all tonight?"
"Maybe for a few stretches of forty-five minutes or less here or there..." Cat admits "But not prolonged, well-rested sleep."
"We still have a good amount of time before we need to be awake..." Jade points out "Do you want to try?"
"I don't think I'll be able to." Cat tells Jade as she sits up again "I'm too wired, my mind is too all over the place."
"I understand..." Jade nods "I'll stay up with you."
"You don't have t-"
"You woke me up for a reason, didn't you?" Jade smirks, running a hand through her hair to pull it out of her face "What do you say we go for a walk? There's a coffee shop a few blocks over that opens at five, by the time we walk over there it'll be fine. Let's face it, we're both going to need the caffeine today."
"That...sounds nice." Cat smiles a bit "Thank you, Jadey."
"Of course." Jade assures her as she stands up "M'not going dressed like this though. Knowing my luck, some crazy early-bird out for their morning jog will recognize me and take a picture."
She doesn't usually get paparazzied when she isn't with Beck, but there have been a few isolated incidents. More and more people are starting to recognize her in public though. They don't always come up to her, but Jade definitely notices the whispers and the stares. She won't put any makeup on or do much to her hair, but she doesn't want to get caught in her pajamas.
"Fair enough..." Cat agrees "I'm going to grab my sweatshirt and put my hair up."
"Leave in five?"
"Sounds good."
Each of them creeps quietly back towards their respective bedroom, not wanting to risk making too much noise and waking Beck. Jade quietly pushes the door open and tiptoes across the room, using the light from the hallway as illumination. Gently, she opens the door to their walk-in closet and closes it behind her, flipping on the light inside so she can see. It doesn't take her long to select a pair of denim cutoffs and one of her old NYU t-shirts to wear, and she changes quickly before emerging from the closet again.
"Everything okay?" Beck mumbles
"Oh, yeah..." Jade assures him as she moves towards the bed "Cat was just having a hard time sleeping is all, she's nervous. I'm sorry we woke you."
She kneels down beside the bed, propping her chin up on the mattress so she can talk to her boyfriend.
"Don't be sorry..." He yawns "She's not calling anything off, is she?"
"No." Jade shakes her head "Nothing like that. She just wants everything to go smoothly today and she's worried that it won't."
"Can't blame her for that, I suppose."
"No, we can't." Jade agrees "We're going to go for coffee. Do you want me to bring anything back for you?"
"Not this early..." Beck manages to laugh "I'll get my own when I wake up for real."
"Alright, sounds good." Jade leans down and kisses him softly before standing up again "If you're asleep when we get back and stay asleep, I'll see you at the hotel later?"
"Wedding starts at three, I'll be there by two to help out wherever I can."
"Good memory." Jade smirks, even though he can't see her expression "I love you."
"I love you too." Beck tells her before rolling over "Be careful."
"Of course."
Jade stops in the bathroom to brush out her hair and pull it into a bun, feeling a bit more put together before walking back into the living room to meet Cat.
"I heard voices in there..." Cat sighs "Did we wake Beck?"
"We didn't, I don't think." Jade shrugs "I probably did when I moved out of bed and then came back in to change. S'fine, he'll fall right back to sleep. He always does."
"If you say so."
"I do. C'mon, let's go."
The two girls leave the apartment, Jade locking the door behind them, before taking the elevator down to the lobby and exiting the building. It's the first day of July so even though it's early, the weather is still very warm. They're comfortable as they begin walking down the street towards the coffee shop, Jade leading the way. The sun is starting to rise and the streets are still relatively empty, giving the city a rather calm setting.
"Feels like a beautiful day to get married." She says to Cat "Doesn't it?"
"Sure does." Cat grins "You were right. No matter what happens today...as long as Robbie and I get married, nothing else will matter."
"Atta girl." Jade laughs "Now let's go get you some coffee!"
"Thank you for talking me off of the ledge." Cat thanks her "Maybe one day I'll be able to return the favor."
"We'll see." Jade smirks
"Jadey?"
"Hm?"
"Are you and Beck going to get married?"
"I dunno..." Jade admits "Maybe."
She hopes that they will, but admitting that out loud feels like jinxing it. There was also a point in her life where she thought she would marry Marcus though too, and that hadn't turned out how she thought it would. Jade loves Beck so much more than she had ever loved Marcus, and she hadn't known that would be possible. But she doesn't want to think about the possibility of her relationship with Beck ending in anything but marriage.
"I hope you do." Cat tells her "You guys make each other so happy."
"We'll see what happens." Jade smirks "Only time will tell."
The ceremony goes off without any issues.
The traffic in New York is typical, but not bad enough that anyone gets stuck and misses the wedding. The caterers show up on time, and no one drops the cake when it's delivered. Not to mention that Cat looks beautiful in her wedding dress. When Robbie sees her walking down the aisle for the first time, he cries.
Cat is the second most beautiful woman in the room though, at least in Beck's opinion. He hadn't been part of the wedding party, he hasn't known Robbie that long so that fact didn't offend him in the slightest, and sat with the rest of the guests during the ceremony. The whole time he couldn't take his eyes off of his girlfriend, standing beside Cat in her blush pink bridesmaid gown. Jade looked absolutely breathtaking and Beck couldn't get over it. He told her so too when he saw her after the ceremony and she had looked at her feet and smiled, thanking him as her face turned the same shade of pink as her dress. Although she has her own flirty moments, she still isn't entirely used to being complimented by him as often as she is.
As the maid of honor, Jade has quite a few responsibilities to keep her busy throughout the night. One of these responsibilities is her speech at the start of the reception, and as she recounts her friendship with Cat and how Robbie had been introduced...Beck is reminded of just how great of a writer she is. She had been able to take a rather typical story and turn it into something equally funny and emotional...he's convinced there's nothing that his girlfriend can't do.
Unfortunately, Beck and Jade aren't seated together during the meal. As part of the bridal party, Jade is seated at the head table with Cat and Robbie. Beck is seated at another table nearby with the spouses and partners of other members of the party who also had to sit alone. He's able to make small talk and gets along well enough with everyone he's sitting with, but both he and Jade are equally relieved and excited when the music starts to signal it's time to dance...and they're able to finally spend an extended amount of time together.
"How's our bride?" Beck asks as Jade approaches his table "Less nervous now?"
"Yes." Jade laughs, taking a seat on his lap and wrapping her arms around his neck "Both because everything that was making her nervous is over now and because she's had her fair share of champagne."
"Good." Beck chuckles "Hey, have I told you how beautiful you look in that dress yet?"
"You've told me a few times already, yeah." Jade nods "But feel free to tell me again."
"You look beautiful in that dress."
"Thank you, baby." Jade kisses him "You look pretty handsome yourself."
"Wanna dance?"
"Yes." Jade grins "But first, I need a drink."
They head to the bar in the back of the reception hall and order their drinks, a cocktail for Jade and a beer for Beck. Jade introduces Beck to a few of her friends from college that he hasn't yet met who are also hanging out by the bar and they make small talk for a while. Once the couple has finished their drinks, Beck takes Jade's hand and leads her out to the dance floor.
The DJ is playing typical wedding music: YMCA, The Chicken Dance, Wobble, and Shout...to name a few. There's also classic pop songs thrown in that everyone dances to and enjoys screaming at the top of their lungs. Beck will admit that he and Robbie were more than amused to stand to the side and watch Cat and Jade sing and jump around to 'Man I Feel Like a Woman'. Every once and a while a slow song is thrown in though, giving everyone a chance to catch their breath and relax before they start jumping around again. During this song in particular, Jade drapes her arms around Beck's neck and rests her head against his chest as he guides them getly around their space on the dance floor.
"This is a great song." He admits to her as they sway back and forth
"I dunno it." Jade admits
"What?" Beck gasps "You don't?"
"M'not really a country music fan." She shrugs, looking up at him
"Well, neither am I..." Beck admits "But this is a pretty famous song...makes me think of you, actually..."
"Really?"
"Yeah..." He smiles "Listen to the lyrics..."
Jade rests her head against Beck's chest again, closing her eyes and listening to the lyrics of the song. When the next chorus hits, Beck begins singing in her ear, quietly enough that only she can hear.
"I don't know how you do what you do...I'm so in love with you...it just keeps getting better...I wanna spend the rest of my life, with you by my side..." He sings softly in her ear "Forever and ever...Every little thing that you do...Baby, I'm amazed by you..."
"You're a pretty good singer, babe." Jade smiles, looking up at him "I love you too, by the way."
"When did I tell you that I loved you?"
He does, of course. He knows that she knows he does too, or at least he does everything he can to make sure that she always knows.
"You didn't have to." She tells him "That said it all."
"Oh." He smirks "Got it."
"You're right..." She admits as they continues to dance "This is a great song."
"Told you..." He smiles "Hey Jade?"
"Hm?"
"What do you say some day when neither one of us is busy...we have ourselves one of these?" Beck suggests
"A wedding?"
"Yeah."
"Are you asking me to marry you?"
"Not right now." Beck clarifies "But one day...I think I will."
"I think I'd like that."
"You think or you know?"
"I know."
This is the second time today that someone has brought up the idea of her marrying Beck, and this time it had actually been Beck himself. Again, Jade doesn't want to jinx anything...but this is definitely a good sign that there's a chance it could actually happen...right?
"Alright." Beck grins "Sounds like a plan. Would you want to get married here? Or travel somewhere?"
"I think that would depend on the time of year." Jade admits "I've always wanted to get married outdoors. If we do it in the summer, we could stay here. But if it's a winter wedding, we should travel."
"That sounds like a decent enough idea." Beck rests his chin on the top of Jade's head "Would Cat be your maid of honor?"
"Probably..." Jade chuckles "Would Andre be your best man?"
"Probably." Beck agrees "What color dresses would your friends wear?"
"Again, depends on the time of year." Jade tells him "Different colors for different seasons, you know?"
"No, I didn't, actually." Beck admits "Thank goodness for you, I would have planned everything wrong."
"Don't worry." Jade assures him "When the time comes, we'll do all of the planning together."
"Alright, good." Beck smiles "Clearly, I'm pretty clueless."
"I've got you, don't worry."
"I've got you too." He tells her as he presses a kiss to her temple "Forever."
"I love you..." She tells him as the song ends
"I love you too."
A new song starts to play, this time more upbeat and exciting. Guests who had previously left the dance floor begin to flood back onto it as the energy in the room starts to elevate again. Beck and Jade can only laugh and smile at each other, holding hands as they dance entirely differently to this new song than they had to the last. They might not know exactly what their future together looks like, but it becomes less and less fuzzy with every day that they spend with each other.
