It wasn't so much the terrified screams that rattled Mamoru, it was the silence. It stretched, deafening. As the space between him and his beloved Usagi grew. Between when he'd last heard her sweet laughter and this nightmare, he found himself reliving.
It wasn't that the screams were any easier to hear, but by then he was ready. The silence tore at him first, made sure he was good and anguished before he heard anything from his sweet Usagi's mouth, reaching desperately for him across the growing void.
And when the screams did die down, he was again left with gnawing silence and his own racing heartbeat.
