The days leading up to the wedding felt like time was dragging on. It was going to be a small quaint ceremony, just how I like it. Though Molly and almost every other Weasley insisted that our wedding should be larger to accommodate all of Ron's side of the family. Thankfully Ron and Bill had my back on this.
It was about one-thirty in the afternoon two days before the wedding, it was a warm sunny day, so I took a stroll around the fields that surrounded the Burrow.
The sun warmed my skin as I walked lazily through the fields. This was one of the rare times between working on getting a job that I felt suited me at the Ministry and wedding planning that I had to myself. It was like a breath of fresh air, I was starting to go crazy at the thought of looking or picking out one more table cloth or inspecting a piece of driftwood that would be enchanted into a dancefloor.
As I was nearing the magical border that surrounded the Burrow I noticed something strange. A small owl lay still on the ground. Slowly I approach the thing and realize it was hurt. The poor thing hooted softly at me. It looked to be an owl that was used for messaging.
After a short internal battle, I picked it up gently, ignoring the letter for now, and took it back to the Burrow. The poor thing was so small, I could not understand how the poor thing got hurt.
It wasn't long after I got the small owl back to the Burrow that Molly fixed it up. She had said that there were only a few gashes and a small fracture in its wing. Poor thing was attacked by a wild animal was all that we could manage to figure out.
After trying to send the owl on its way, but it refused to leave, it was only then we did read the letter. It was only Great Aunt Muriel making her special requests about her stay and arrangements for the wedding. Though I am not quite sure why all the Weasley's bend over backwards to please her. But, I know Ron and everyone else loves their family fiercely, no matter how much they do not like a family member, and will do anything for them.
Little did everyone know that their lives would change within a few short days. The little owl Hermione had saved not only carried an innocent letter, the harm that was done to it was a subtle threat to everyone that attended the wedding.
It was now the day before the wedding and Hermione was spending as much time as she could balancing finishing preparations and seeing Ron. She wanted to follow the Muggle tradition of not seeing each other until she walked down the aisle.
The thought of marrying her best friend and lover, in no less than twenty-four hours, set the butterflies in her stomach a flight. She was reminded so much so when Ron ran his thumb across her engagement ring, another Muggle tradition, or called her the "Soon-to-be new Mrs. Weasley." Oh how that made her warm from the inside out.
Others who knew Hermione may take this behavior as odd and very un-Hermioneish, but who could blame a girl for getting giddy and excited for their own wedding? Now, especially when she will be in the back garden getting eternally bonded to the love of her life.
Hermione had just set about finishing the centerpieces for the tables when Harry came rushing in looking very worried. She paused just a brief second to give him a quizzical look when he placed a hand on her upper arm. Gently he tugged her away and outside to the front of the house.
"Hermione, the Auror Department just caught wind of some of the Death Eaters that escaped after the Battle." her breath caught in her throat, "We think that they will be targeting the wedding since so many of those that helped defeat Voldemort will be in attendance."
Deflating at the news, Hermione finally spoke, "There will be off-duty Aurors here, Harry." There was a moment's hesitation. "Right Harry?" Harry just looked at her guiltily. Sighing she turned on her heel and walked back into the Burrow. This was not how her wedding day was supposed to go.
It didn't take long for this news to spread around all of those who were occupying the Burrow at this current moment. So, Hermione, and Ron by extension, kept getting reassurances from others saying that it wouldn't be so bad as to having a few on-duty Aurors. But, that was the worst thing that Hermione could imagine. There was supposed to be peace, at least for this day. No, but instead this wedding just put a target on everyone's backs who attended. She couldn't believe her luck. There was no canceling or rescheduling the wedding now, she was determined to go through with it.
It wasn't long before dinner time that some of the guests who were staying overnight arrived. Hermione hugged, kissed cheeks, and shook hands with everyone respectively. Upon the last guest's arrival she just grew more giddy at the fact that now in less than twenty-four hours she was marrying Ron.
As dinner wore on Hermione chatted happily with the oldest two Weasley's, Bill and Charlie. She loved hearing about work at the wizarding bank, Gringotts, and Charlie's work with dragons. Molly was the one to bring up the hurt owl the day before. It did not settle Hermione's nerves when both Charlie and Bill said that there were multiple owls turning up with wounds like they were attacked by a wild animal.
After dinner was cleaned up and everyone was starting to turn in for the night, Hermione decided to catch a few more minutes with Ron. "Hard to imagine in a few short hours we'll be married eh?" Hermione chuckled weakly at Ron trying to lighten the mood and tension.
At this Ron looked at her skeptically. "No, I'm not getting cold feet. Just nervous about tomorrow that's all. You know I don't like being the center of attention and now I will be it tomorrow." Upon this confession, it seemed to quell Ron's uneasiness about her reaction. She soon bid him a goodnight and went up to her shared room with Ginny.
As soon as she entered the room Ginny pounced on her wanting to gossip and talk about her and Harry's upcoming nuptials. Hermione let her indulge herself to her heart's content. This kept her mind away from Bill and Charlie's confessions about the owls and what Harry had said about the impending threats.
As she drifted off to sleep that night she thought of her future and the future between her and Ron. She fell asleep with a smile upon her face.
